Mumford and Son’s Babel opens with a very impressive 600K in sales according to Billboard. It easily becomes the biggest opening of 2012 trumping Bieber’s 374K (Madonna had 359K and P!nk 280K). This is also the biggest opening for a Rock band since AC/DC’s “Black Ice” opened with 784K in Nov of 2008.
With 600K, it also had the second best selling week of any album in 2012. Only Adele’s 703K sales the week after the Grammy’s trumps it. Of the 600K, 420K were digital sales giving it the second best digital week of any album in any year. The only album with more is Gaga’s “Born This Way” which sold 662K digital copies its debut week when Amazon sold it for 99 cents. The second biggest week for an album that cost more than a dollar was Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter IV” which sold 362K its debut week last year.
This is the weekly sales thread. Please post numbers when (if) you find them. Thanks!
We may get one-day estimates from HDD today for AGT’s Jackie Evancho, X-Factor’s Chris Rene and The Voice’s Blake Shelton (what, they have contestants?). Phil will edge closer to 2M in sales.
