Idol Headlines for 4/4/13

The American Idol results show airs tonight featuring performances from alums Carrie Underwood and Casey James! 8/7c pm.

‘American Idol’ Sucks This Season: Here’s Seven Reasons Why – American Idol has always leaned retro—with its tributes to Elvis, disco, the Beatles, and the Bee Gees—but it’s weird to see the singing competition turn into All About Eve. That’s been the main narrative of the show’s 12th season. Producers of the reality-TV juggernaut have neglected the contestants in favor of the story line about an established diva (Mariah Carey) protecting her crown from a feisty newcomer (Nicki Minaj). The dynamic played out, but unfortunately for Idol, there was a glitch. The younger siren who stole Mimi’s thunder wasn’t Nicki—it was Shakira, the new judge on NBC’s The Voice. – Read more at The Daily Beast

American Idol Backstage Scoop: Why Janelle Will Be Confronting “Mean” Nicki Minaj – “Nicki better give me my boots back!” Janelled told us. Especially because they aren’t just any old pair: “A lady made them for me, like a lady who does boots for Miss Texas USA. She saw me on the show, and I think she knew people who knew me so she contacted them and [was] like, ‘I want to make boots for Janelle.'” While the Tennessee native doesn’t blame Nicki for coveting her “hot” cowgirl kicks, she vowed to stand up to Idol’s most critical judge the next time she sees her. “I’ll be like, ‘Girl, give me my boots back!'” Janelle exclaimed. “Because you know, she’ll probably be mean to me. She can’t be nice to me for more than one show!” – Read more at EOnline

Jessica Sanchez hopes to see Boracay, Palawan, Bataan next time she visits, maybe in June – By the time this column comes out, the talented Filipino-Mexican-American will have started filming her scenes for two episodes, including the season finale. At the time of our phone interview, the only details Jessica knew about her character was that she’s “a diva singer from a rival school.” She did not know yet what her character’s race is or how different her role’s story line is from that of Filipino singer Charice Pempengco when the latter played a powerhouse vocalist, Sunshine Corazon, on “Glee.” “I can’t wait [to shoot],” Jessica said. “I’m very excited. I can’t wait to meet the cast.” According to the Chula Vista, California native, it will be her first time to meet another Fil-Am, Darren Criss. – Read nire at Inquirer.net

Colton Dixon Finds His Calling In Christian Rock – Finishing seventh on last year’s season of “American Idol” hasn’t stopped Colton Dixon from living out his dream. The 22-year-old Tennessee native has carved a niche for himself and is quickly becoming a staple in the Christian rock market. Dixon recently returned to the “Idol” stage where he debuted his latest single “Love Has Come for Me.” The track is lifted from his debut album, “A Messenger,” released Jan. 29. The set continues to perform well on the sales charts. After nine weeks, it has a peak of No. 15 on The Billboard 200 and is currently in the top 50. Dixon’s previous single “You Are” is at No. 11 on the Christian Songs chart in its 24th week. – Read more at Billboard

Elise Testone to open and close the Cooper River Bridge Run – “That was the first and only one I’ve done, and I loved it,” she said of her previous Bridge Run. “It was inspiring because everyone was doing it together, no matter what shape they were in. During the race, your body just takes over and your mind just goes for the ride. I want to do it again for sure.” On Saturday, Testone is scheduled to perform a brief acoustic set and sing the national anthem at the starting line on Coleman Boulevard in Mount Pleasant. Last December, she sang the national anthem in front of 30,000 soccer fans at the Major League Soccer Cup in Los Angeles.
