Narrowing the ‘American Idol’ field – Tonight on American Idol, eight remaining finalists will sing the songs of the Motor City. Honestly, though, the field’s already much narrower.
As one of this week’s Idol promos quoted from an earlier Idol Chatter post, “this season’s crop of Idol finalists is one of the strongest groups ever” — in terms of pure vocal talent, that is. (Has there ever been a singer as gifted as Curtis Finch Jr. eliminated in the 10 spot?) Unfortunately, only about three of them know what they’re doing when it comes to picking material. And one of those singers will win. The judges know it, too. – Read more at USA Today

Crystal Bowersox to Play Patsy Cline on Broadway – Crystal Bowersox, the runner-up on the 2010 edition of “American Idol,” will play Patsy Cline on Broadway this summer in a new production of the musical “Always … Patsy Cline,” a tribute show featuring classic songs performed by the country singer like “Crazy,” “Walkin’ After Midnight” and “I Fall to Pieces,” the producers announced on Tuesday. The two-character show, written by Ted Swindley, brings Cline to life through the eyes of a friend and devoted fan; she will be played by the actress Annette O’Toole, who starred as Clark Kent’s mother, Martha, on the television series “Smallville” and shared an Academy Award nomination for best song for the 2003 movie “A Mighty Wind.” – Read more at NYTimes

Taylor Hicks back in Birmingham this weekend, singing at Saw’s Juke Joint, Croonin’ for Critters (photos, video) – “It’ll be nice to be in Birmingham for a couple of days,” Hicks says during a phone interview. “I’ll take a pause for a great cause, play some blues and eat some barbecue. I’ll visit friends and family, take some time off to recharge the batteries.” We can’t tell you everything that Hicks, 36, has in mind for his vacation — “I’ll probably disappear,” he says — but we do know that he’s not an official contestant at Croonin’ for Critters. Local notables, including attorneys such as Tommy Spina, will sing for a panel of judges and collect votes, in the form of $1 donations, from audience members. Hicks is set to perform, but he won’t be competing for votes. – Read more at AL.com
