Which missing ‘American Idol’ contestants deserve a CD revival?

Good news for former American Idol contestants still dreaming of chart success: There’s life beyond cruise-ship performances and touring productions of Beauty and the Beast. That’s because according to a story in Variety, Artists’ Addiction Records and Rocket Science are teaming up to release a series of four CDs that will ultimately showcase 12 different Idol also-rans non-winners singing three songs each.

More American Idol Fall Out

Michael Johns appeared on American Idol during the audition episodes as an Australian import but word on the street is that he not all he cracked up to be. A part from being dreamy and having an amazing voice.

The story of Michael Johns stretches all the way back to 2000 when he first joined the band Film as their lead singer. Back then his name wasnt even Michael Johns, it was Michael Lee. Since the band had previously been established Johns was to attempt to learn the bands old material as well as to help them produce new, and original, material.

Buzzkilled offers American Idol Weekly Wrap-Up Live has announced that it will offer its viewers a weekly candid look at the hit reality show American Idol throughout its seventh season. Once the finalists are selected and American Idol expands to three shows a week, Live viewers can see Wright every Wednesday and Thursday. Wright will talk about the highlights and drama of the week events as well as offer her own scorecard of the contestants seeking the coveted title.

Scottsdale jeweler hands off Super Bowl trophy

More than 100 NFL superstars, bigwigs and elite customers of the upscale jeweler got an invite to have breakfast at Tiffany and watch the hand off.

Among them was Phillippi Sparks, former cornerback for the Giants and possibly even more widely recognized as the father of American Idol Jordin Sparks, who will perform the National Anthem at the main event.

Haynes asked Sparks, who never got to perform his feats in a Super Bowl, how he felt about his daughter doing so.

…You want your kids to out-do you, but I didnt know it would be (at a Super Bowl), Sparks said. …That a little hard to swallow.

Rascal Flatts brings spectacle and dead-on country

American Idol alumna (class of 2005) Kellie Pickler sang tunes for her “Small Town Girl” CD. Awash in a giant E chord, the perky Pickler hit “Gotta Keep Moving” then dove into “Things That Never Cross a Man’s Mind, ” tongue firmly in cheek.

She came out in glittery high heels, but they were off by the second song. “One of the Guys” showed off her young band, “Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You” showed off her powerful pipes.

For Reba, Kelly fans, concert best of 2 worlds

For the 8, 000-plus fans of Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson, Saturday night sold-out 2 Worlds 2 Voices concert was the best of both worlds.

Reba was a little bit country; Kelly was a little bit rock n roll.

Together, the duo took the audience on a high-energy roller coaster ride through some of each other greatest hits.

…It amazing to have them both on stage at the same time, Stacey Ohl said. …But Im definitely here for Kelly.

  1. Micheal Johns aka Lee sounds like a nice guy assummily stealing a song from his previous band that he jioned when it was already together. I guess he would be the real diva but I am sure he will be one of the pimped ones. I just think it still obvious the producers of American Idol faves are and not .The question I do wonder would some of the contestants make as far without thier story ? I do think thier would be a good chance of not making to the judges at all no matter how well they sang. Why from what I heard backstories are a big key part.

Does anyone think 3 times a week is overkill?

  2. Does anyone think 3 times a week is overkill?

The Top 24 rounds are always 3 times a week. One night for the boys, one for the girls, and the eliminations. The schedule will revert back to 2 times a week once the Top 12 begins.

  3. Thank you for the information I should of payed more attenion .

Well it seems thier will be some charaters this year or at least some buzz which is peaking my interst in the top 24.

  4. Wow Michael whoever he is sounds like a first class jerk. I actually love the 3 times a week for top 24 – yeehaw! Can’t wait!

I’m happy to see Patrick Hall will be on one of those American Idol cds. I always liked him.

I’m not a country music fan as you all know but, after listening to them together, I may have to check out Kelly and Reba in concert if I have the chance. I think they sound great together. Plus, they both seem like pretty cool people – an added bonus!

  5. Renaldo Lapuz unplugged

MANILA, Philippines – He didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t make it to the Hollywood round of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idol,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ but 45-year-old Filipino-American Renaldo Lapuz has achieved the seemingly improbable: 15 minutes of global fame for a former tricycle driver in Sikatuna Village who later worked as janitor in Wal-Mart Reno.

Make that 15 minutes and counting…

I used to live in that (Sikatuna) village when I was a student and rode tricycles all the time. For all I know, I might have been a passenger of Renaldo’s then. Heh. ;)

  6. Micheal Lee Johnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s side of the story is contained in this article linked in the article above.

Thanks MJ… There usually are two sides to any story. The fact that he changed his name was a red flag to me… just my personal opinion. I really dont think he’s all that great so he’ll probably win. :)

  7. Good for AJ and Patrick Hall, both contestants who, IMO, went way before their time.

I’m glad we got both sides of the Johns/Lee controversy. I can understand his old band’s frustration at how it all turned out, though I can also see where MJ/L was coming from too. Sounds like his old bandmates were, in terms of hitting the “big-time,” a little long in the tooth and past their prime. That’s not to say they aren’t wonderful and worthy musicians; it’s just that the record companies are generally looking for younger talent. MJ/L could have stuck with his band and squandered his chance or he could extract himself from an unfortunate situation as best he could.

  8. I am seriously excited about the American Idol Also Rans record. Patrick Hall, Rudy “Free Ride” Cardenas (heh — Rudy, didn’t you hear: Song Choice is EVERYTHING) — Yahoo!!

I also agree that Alaina Alexander (why her?!?) should have been replaced with Lisa Leushner. I still get steamed by how she was treated. They killed her off the show in the most public offing ever — IMO because she was serious competition for their chosen one that year. Really would be excited to hear some music from Lisa.

  9. Dot Dot Dot (from the hit FOX TV show à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Next Great American Bandà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ) rocked the stage and kicked off their celebrity jam session

    OK. Huh??????????????? :huh_tb:

  10. Love these idea of the cds with former AI contestants, will definately check it out, as I loved Gideon, and AJ. Nice to see them have a second chance to be heard, so many times, I have favs that I was looking forward to hearing “just one more wk”. And yes, to this day, I cannot believe that Lisa Leushner was completely “dropped” from AI season three after her fantastic performance of Chaka Khan’s song, Sweet Thing. Another AI snub, blech, something that really turned me off the show that season.
Have checked out her cd and that girl is awesomely talented.

  11. Sarah, heading over to Amazon stat! Thanks for letting me know. I think maybe her publicity people need to work a little harder because I thought she fell of the side of the earth (where AI left her grrrrrrr…)

MJ, I used the Amazon link to go over and order — hope you get credit for it. Purchased JPL’s and Bucky’s album while I was at it.

  12. You’re welcome, t2! She’s my “friend” on myspace, so I’d seen info about her cd. Maybe she will be one of their “where are they now” features this year. That would be interesting!

On another subject – I watched the first episode of “Gone Country” earlier. It looks, um… interesting. Sisqo singing country music? Julio Iglesias Jr. singing country music (though he is definitely nice eyecandy.)? BOBBY BROWN singing country music? :blink_tb:

It should be interesting to watch Diana’s progress on that show. I always thought she’d fit well into the country genre, so I’ll be curious to see what kind of country song she comes up with along with her writing team. She definitely has the voice to carry it. I never really liked her on the show, but she’s got the pipes, fo sho.

  13. RE: Which missing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ contestants deserve a CD revival?

I’ll tell you who I notice has totally DISAPPEARED from view — Scott “The Executioner” Savol. Here’s a guy who outlasted the flashy Constantine himself and wanted to show his father that he could make something of himself.

Well, now that he went as far as he did, where is he ??

  14. Scott has been busy doing some things. I just checked out his website, Here is an excerpt from that:

While the single and album have been pushed back to early 2008, it’s all good because we are taking the time to get everything just right and it’s allowing me time to work with one of MY idols – “L’il G” from Silk! I am also working with a great team of Producers out of D.C. – The Beat Moguls. So keep checking back for updates – promise it will be worth the wait!

In the meantime, check out the appearances section of the site – I’m doing a cruise, starring in a play and will be in People Magazine in November – you never know where I’ll show up!

Scott was featured in People’s Magazine, along with other past idol contestants who now call Nashville home.

  15. Not to be snarky, but I rather doubt Savol’s CD will be a real hot seller! Now cruises could work out well for him, but I think his “window of opportunity” has closed!

  16. Paula is not “Forever Your Girl”. “Your Forever Girl” is more like it.

Just returned from the taping of Pauler’s new song with Randy’s band at Fox Studios. Guess what? I never got to see it. As it turned out, I invested 6 hours of my precious weekend time to stand outside in the rain, then wait in a room with a hundred other people with no seats for 4-1/2 hours, finally not being able to tolerate the looks on my kids faces, so we left.

Every once in awhile, someone would come in and say it would only be “15 more minutes”, each time it took longer and longer for anyone to even come back and say anything to us. No food. No water. You get the picture.

They had us get there at 11:30 and then we heard Paula didn’t get there until 1:00. Of course, there’s hair and makeup, and staging, choreography, lighting checks, etc.. When we finally left at 4:00, Paula hadn’t even run through her routine herself – it had only been done with a stand in and the backup dancers.

Sorry I’m going on about this. Needed to vent, I guess. I don’t know if Pauler was having a Diva afternoon or if there were legitimate production problems, but man, you can’t do that people who are supposed to be your enthusiastic audience in a music video. I hope it turns out ok. With my attitude at the moment, I don’t really care all that much. It’s probably for the best that I wasn’t on camera. When I got back to my car and checked my rear view mirror, my hair looked like a cat had been licking it – LOL. The taping of NGAB was perfection next to the disarray of this one. OK, I’m done.

  17. Awwwww Carie….. I’m so sorry. But – wow – your hair description – LOL – I know the look.. I’ve HAD the look. That’s such a bummer about the taping.

  18. Oh man, Carrie. I’m sorry. :(.

I’d bet anything it was Paula who held up the works. It’ll be interesting to see if anything turns up in the gossip columns about this…

Can I post your rant out front? I think your experience today is a news story in itself…

  19. Sure, MJ. And I think you’re right – Paula probably didn’t feel “ready” for an audience.

I just heard that Ryan is guest-judging this week because she won’t be there. She’ll probably still be getting “ready” to do her video. Heh.

  20. I watched the pre-show to the SAG awards tonight and the hostess talked about Ryan missing the show because he was home sick.
They said he’d never miss work unless he was “very sick.”

  21. I wanted to like Michael Lee Johns, and I can deal with him being an asshat and leaving his band. It’s business, after all. Not much different than leaving a job. However, his taking some of the bands songs with him without permission leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I don’t care if his label told him they wanted him, the songs, and not the band. Oh, and if they wanted him so badly, why is he on AI?

  22. This may show I watch too many old reruns and too much tv but……does the situation of Micheal Johns seem like a Brady Bunch episode different ending of course. When Greg brady was asked to leave the gruop but did not and learn an important lesson.

I hope he does not sing”Sunshine Day” with the background of Sears.(Ok that is off the movie )Simons face would be priceless.

  23. I wanted to like Michael Lee Johns, and I can deal with him being an asshat and leaving his band. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s business, after all. Not much different than leaving a job. However, his taking some of the bands songs with him without permission leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Yeah, I wanted to like him, too. Oh well, I finally got around to watching his old video with “The Rising” and it just sounded like a Daughtry song anyway. Notwithstanding the Otis Redding song for the audition, he’ll probably turn out to be a poser rocker. I can hardly wait for the smoke machine and background flames of rawk. Hopefully someone else in the Top 12 guys will appeal or a good VFTW candidate will emerge.

  24. Michael Lee Johns may be an attractive man with a good voice, but he has no class! This man should not be on American Idol. Aside from the fact that he is a professional singer, he’s also a jerk. If he makes the TOP 24, he will be stealing a spot that should go to a more deserving contestant.

TPTB should be looking for his replacement immediately.
