‘Color Purple’ at the Arie Crown: ‘American Idol’ star Fantasia Barrino is new to Broadway but not to Celie

An unlikely superstar, Fantasia Barrino was a 19-year-old single mother surviving on food stamps when she tried out for Season 3 of “American Idol.” With a powerful, gospel-infused voice and a gritty determination, the North Carolina native beat out another powerful singer named Jennifer Hudson and triumphantly walked off with the top prize in 2004. Now the 25-year-old has stepped onto the stage to play the lead role as Celie in the “The Color Purple, ” a musical adaptation of the book by Alice Walker. The Broadway tour, co-starring Felicia P. Fields, is making its second visit to Chicago; it was at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in spring 2007.

We caught up with Fantasia (known by her first name) to talk to her about her latest role.

Fantasia steeps herself in ‘The Color Purple’

This is a tale of two stories. There is one that forms the basis of “The Color Purple, ” the Broadway musical based on Alice Walker’s 1983 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, and it goes like this: Celie, a poor, uneducated young black woman in rural, early 20th century Georgia, is raped (very likely by her father), becomes pregnant, has her children taken away and is forced into a marriage with a man who subsequently abuses her. Gradually, she learns some lessons from two very different but spirited women — the sassy, self-possessed Sofia and the seductive, independent singer, Shug — and she begins to gain more independence, even finding success in her own fashion business. Most crucially, Celie starts to love herself for the very first time.

Colbie Caillat Isn’t Sure Paula Abdul Is Leaving ‘American Idol’

“I’m not sure that Paula’s really leaving, ” she told MTV News of Abdul’s surprise exit from the show earlier this month. “I know everyone’s saying that.”

The singer/songwriter said she thinks Abdul played an important role on the show by helping the contestants build up confidence when they needed it most. “Paula may have been too nice to them, but she also would tell them the great things about them, ” Caillat said. “And people need that when their hearts are being shattered. They need that little boost of confidence.”
