Exclusive! James Durbin Stood Up for Casey Abrams After Jimmy Iovine Made Him Cry

“There was a time when Casey [Abrams] played ‘Nature Boy’ for Jimmy [Iovine] and literally, the mentor and the producer who was producing the track laughed in his face and said, ‘Are we being punked? Are you kidding me?’ They made Casey cry, ” recalls Durbin, who was standing outside the room at the time. “It was so rude and disrespectful.”

Shortly after, Durbin did his interview segment, asking America to give metal a chance. “After the cameras stopped rolling I pretty much laid into Jimmy and said it’s not cool what they’re doing, that they’re making us cry and making us feel so much pain, ” says Durbin. “Casey was up next and he heard the whole thing and Casey was crying and I was crying and he said to me, ‘Because of that speech I’m going to stick to my guns like you did.’ And he ended up singing ‘Nature Boy.’ That performance had so much emotion because it was really what he wanted to do, not what someone else wanted him to do.”

Scott MacIntyre’s Wedding: An Inside Look

Maybe that’s why I was so emotional sitting inside the North Bible Church in Scottsdale yesterday for Scott and Christina’s wedding. I wasn’t the only one crying. Reciting his vows, Scott couldn’t help himself as his tears flowed. Christina spontaneously reached out and wiped them away with a loving touch. I was also moved by a brilliant performance of “The Prayer” by Todd and Katelyn MacIntyre. Most people don’t realize that Scott, Todd and Katelyn all tried out for American Idol at the same time, and all survived the first rounds until they sang for the executive producers, and then Scott was the only one to move forward. I wish the producers had been there yesterday to hear Todd and Katelyn’s vocals on the song made famous by Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion. They’ll have a chance to hear Katelyn again – she recently won the “American Idol Experience” at Disney World in Orlando, giving her the right to audition for “Idol” in any city she chooses without waiting in line.
