American Idol Shocker: Pia Toscano Sent Home: MyFoxLA.com

Loser? Nope. But don’t expect Paul McDonald to win on ‘American Idol’ (video)

Although I realize it’s not exactly sporting to cast shadows on an Alabama contender while he’s still in the running, I can’t help but believe that McDonald’s days are numbered on national television.

Consider that one “Idol” expert, Mary Jo Santilli of mj’s big blog, placed McDonald at the bottom of her Top 9 Power List this week. “Mostly a disappointment since Hollywood, ” she said.

Another “Idol” authority, Michael Slezak of TV Line, moved McDonald down the roster to rank him seventh out of nine. “If his voice fails to hold up to the rigors of the brutal ‘Idol’ schedule, he could soon go the way of Ashthon Jones, ” Slezak said.

Catching up with Carmen Rasmusen from ‘Idol’

During the second season of “American Idol, ” the show still had that new, shiny quality attached to it. Part of the reason was Carmen Rasmusen, a 17-year-old beauty from Utah who was the youngest contestant at the time to make the Top 10.

Rasmusen, Simon Cowell’s wild-card pick, finished sixth on the program. She later went to college, married and had two kids. Now 26, she has kept busy, writing a book and releasing an album. She currently has a blog at deseretNews.com called Carmen’s Voice, in which she writes about personal matters and, of course, “American Idol.” She talks with us about her time on the show and the current season.

‘DWTS’ pro Karina Smirnoff poses for Playboy

Dancing with the Stars’ pro Karina Smirnoff has decided to take it all off — though not under the mirror ball. Hugh Hefner tweeted today that Ralph Macchio’s partner will pose for the May issue. She’s on the cover, too.

“The May issue of Playboy is unforgettable with Dancing With The Stars’ Karina Smirnoff on the cover & nude inside, ” Hef posted on his Twitter page.

Maybe he got the idea while sitting in the audience during premiere night?

Voice alone won’t win ‘CMT’s Next Superstar’

Singing skill is only one of the talents that will be judged in the latest musical competition, CMT’s Next Superstar (Friday, 9 ET/PT).

The country contest, hosted by Thea Andrews, differs structurally from the usual TV singing competition. Rather than simply performing before an audience, five men and five women ages 22-50 will take on a range of challenges, including writing songs and making music videos.

“It’s really much more of an in-depth look than I think you would traditionally get from a singing competition show, ” says Grammy-winning songwriter and producer Matt Serletic, the show’s one permanent judge. He’ll be joined on the panel each week by celebrity guests, including singers Colbie Caillat and Trace Adkins. The premiere’s guests are actress/singer Kristin Chenoweth and Billboard writer Fred Bronson.

Thousands turn out for ‘X Factor’ auditions — and a shot at $5 million

“The X Factor” is difficult to define. In addition to talent and luck, two elements have to be patience and stamina.

An estimated 7, 500 singers showed up at the BankUnited Center on Thursday — the earliest at 3:30 a.m., according to Coral Gables police — each hoping to make the cut for Simon Cowell’s new Fox competition program, where the winner gets $5 million.

Tightly bunched between metal barriers, dubbed “chutes, ” it would be three hours in the sun before the first wannabes were allowed into the building to impress with “a chorus and a verse.”
