We Watched Sound of Music Live With Liesl and Gretl of the Original Movie – While the rest of the country gathered round their televisions to watch NBC’s dismal attempt at modernizing a sacred movie musical into a Walmart-sponsored live spectacle, Charmian Carr, the actress who played Liesl in the original Sound of Music, held her own private viewing party. At her home, just north of Los Angeles, the eldest onscreen von Trapp gathered about eight of her friends—including Kym Karath, who played baby of the family, Gretl, in the classic film nearly 50 years ago, and she kindly invited VF.com to join in on the fun. (Angela Cartwright, who played Brigitta, is still close with her Sound of Music sisters and lives in the area but could not make the gathering). Expectations were modest—everyone in the group agreed that the special’s star, Carrie Underwood, saddled with the impossible task of trying to live up to Julie Andrews, was cute, likeable, and seemed like a very nice person. The music mogul exclusively told Weekend magazine that news of girlfriend Lauren Silverman’s pregnancy was ‘like coming out of a fog’ that made him feel low and lethargic. He told the magazine: ‘I’m having a baby and I never thought I would. And it totally changed everything. ‘It was like coming out of a fog; that’s the only way I can describe it.
