HDD – Album Sales Prediction : Oct 22-28

With 70.38% of reports in, Taylor Swift is off to a commanding lead that cannot, will not and rarely ever would be beat. Already she’s sitting at 971,801 sold and pundits are predicting that “RED” could finish in the 1.2M range. If she tops a million, Taylor Swift will be the first artist to have two consecutive albums open with more than a million in sales since Eminem in 2002 (the Backstreet Boys were the first to do that in 2000 and the only other artists to achieve that is N’SYNC – all this happened in the 2000-2002 range when CDs were king and illegal downloading hadn’t gained a foothold while there was no reasonable medium for purchasing singles).

During most any other week, Hip-Hop artist Kendrick Lamar would be easily topping the chart, but this week, he will have to settle for debuting in second. Last week’s number one artist, Jason Aldean is 3rd and his previous album (which features Idol Kelly Clarkson) is at 45th. Mumford & Sons, who led the chart for three weeks, are still selling steady at 4th. Stone Sour rocks into a debut at 5th while Tony Bennet continues to mine the rich duets vein (this time including a duet with Voice judge Christina) for 6th. P!NK is 7th, Gary Clark Jr. is 8th, Brandy 9th and ever-present Adele is 10th.

Our first reality show contestant shows up at 27th. That’s Jackie Evancho from America’s Got Talent whose “Songs from the Silver Screen” are currently sitting at 5,620 sold. Then there is a block of contestants 32-34: Carly Rae Jepsen (Canadian Idol), Scotty McCreery (American Idol) and One Direction (UK XF). I’m going to suspect that the shopping channel hasn’t reported in because last Friday, Hits was predicting that Scotty would finish around top 11th. Carrie Underwood rounds out our contestants at 41st with “Blown Away”.

Now 43 features Carly Rae Jepsen, One Direction, Cher Lloyd, XF US judge Demi Lovato and Voice judge Adam Levine. Speaking of judges, Voice judge Adam Levine’s band Maroon 5’s album is at 30th. His bro-judge Blake Shelton’s Christmas album is at 46th (good thing that NBC takes care of the Voice by building a special around one of their judges or this album might completely disappear. Imagine if they did the same sort of thing for a contestant! Maybe even the winner).
