HDD – Album Sales Prediction : Jan 9-15

With yesterday being MLK Day, HDD did not report an estimates. We should get them today.

Last week, HDD predicted that Adele will have her 16th week at number 1. That will tie the “Titanic” Soundtrack for the most number of weeks at number 1 since 1998. The next milestone is “The Bodyguard” Soundtrack that spent 20 weeks at number 1 in 1992-1993. Even Adele will be unlikely to catch the big daddy of them all, the “West Side Story” Soundtrack that spent 54 weeks at #1. What I find even more interesting is that all these Soundtrack albums have such massive record sales and, today, soundtracks struggle to sell much of anything. The music industry does change a lot.

HDD also pointed out that while Adele makes the music industry look healthy by churning out 100K in sales in January, she is an anomaly. The rest of the market is just as sad as it was last year. The David Crowder Band will debut a distant second with 40-45K in sales. 20K is probably good enough to get you into the top 10. And numbers are just depressing.

Kelly is the only Idol showing up in the predicted top 15 with 15-18K in sales. She also appears on the Now 40 compilation album with about 18-21K in sales.
