HDD – Album Sales Prediction : Jan 30 – Feb 5

With 41.02% of reports in, to no one’s surprise, Adele continues to dominate the chart. Second place “Kidz Bop” have less than half the reported sales she does. This is her 19th week at number 1. The album was released Jan 24th in Europe and Feb 22nd in the States. The legs on this album are unreal. When she appears at the Grammys on Sunday, I expect this album will receive a recharge…not that it needs it.

Speaking of the Grammys, third place is held by the 2012 Grammy nominees (I’m assuming HDD has a typo, but that would be funny if it was some intern at Universal Republic who made the initial spelling mistake and it is officially “Nominess”. If so, it was probably the intern in charge of Javier’s career). The album includes tracks from Kelly, Adam Levine, Christina and Blake (I wonder if the others tease Blake because he’s the only one on the panel without a Grammy? Will that change this week?). Tim McGraw’s album that Curb claimed sucked so much he was in breach of contract (a lame-o attempt to keep him under contract longer) is at 4th.

The top debut for the week is Leonard Cohen’s “Old Ideas”. Believe it or not, but this could be his very first top 10 album. Huh. Some Idol fans probably know him best for his much covered song “Hallelujah”, but he’s really so much, much more than that.

Mary J Blige is 6th, Luke Bryan is 7th, Nickelback is 8th, NOW 40 (including tracks from Kelly, Adam Levine and Christina) is now 9th and those Superbowl half-time artists, LFMAO, are 10th.

I will pause here to mention Lana Del Rey. The youtube sensation and SNL train wreck is predicted to be second for the week by both Billboard and HDD, but she is currently far back in 16th. Either her sales collapsed over the weekend or this is yet another example that the HDD percentages don’t mean much. Usually we are at 54%-ish by this point on Monday, so it will be interesting to see who isn’t in the report and what that means about Lana’s market. Since she did so well on iTunes, I suspect that iTunes has not yet reported. If they have, iTunes didn’t move a lot of albums last week. I wonder if she did really well digitally because she is a youtube sensation, but not so well in the brick-and-mortar stores. I will say that I suspect that one part of Walmart has reported since the Country artists are doing well. Country tends to do well at Walmart because they have a lot of stores in the South. Expect to see her surge in today’s updates.

Our first solo Idol appears at 14th. This week, it is Scotty McCreery. Right behind him is Kelly Clarkson. She also appears on the aforementioned Grammy and Now 40 albums as well as Jason Aldean’s album which is currently in 14th. Kelly was widely praised for her SuperBowl National Anthem and is set to appear at the Grammys this week, so her sales for the next two weeks should be very good indeed. It doesn’t hurt that she has the number one single on iTunes and her single is racing up the airplay charts.

Kellie Pickler is next at 22nd and right behind her is Tony Bennett’s latest duets album. It features a duet with Carrie Underwood which has already been performed on an episode of Blue Bloods and will be once again performed on the Grammys this Sunday. Daughtry rounds out the Idols at 28th. Adam Levine’s Maroon 5 is at 37th.
