With 54.02% of reports in, Lady A is off to a commanding lead. They are expected to sell between 145-155K in albums this week. It’s great to be number 1, but its a bit of a drop from their last album’s first week. I guess they aren’t having as much cross-over appeal with this album. Lady A’s lead female singer famously tried out for Idol and was rejected.
The ever popular NOW series has two releases this week. NOW 46 and NOW Country Party. I guess the Idol country artists along with Tate from XF and Cassaddee from The Voice aren’t big enough partiers because nobody vaguely related to singing competitions is on that latter CD. Of course, it doesn’t even feature famous party goer Blake Shelton, so I’m not sure what kind of party that is anyway. The reality singers are not completely shut-out though because Now 46 features One Direction’s “Kiss You” and Olly Murs “Troublemaker” – both are from the UK XF. Now 45 is still on the chart at 27 and features One Direction, Phil Phillip and Kelly Clarkson.
Coming in third and appealing to the Mother’s Day crowd is Michael Buble (who was introduced to the world on AI and once took over for Tony Bennet on a results show and even he widely mocks the results of his singing that night). Justin Timberlake has been pushed out of the Top 4 and has never appeared on Idol – though he has been known to publicly dis Idols (I’m going to find a connection for everybody today, just watch). Next up are the Pistol Annies which famously features Miranda Lambert who got her start on the reality singing show “Nashville Star”. Rod Stewart is widely rumored to have been a gravedigger, but he was really a grave measurer. In any event, his career is never going to need a grave because that guy just keeps on working. Rod has frequently been a mentor on Idol and his latest album is in 6th. Kenny Chesney’s name was floated as a possible Idol judge this year (Keith got the job) and he is in 7th (last week number 1). Blake Shelton is a judge on the Voice and is 8th. Bruno Mars and P!nk are not reality show judges or contestants, but they have been sung approximately 2 gajillion times on the Idol/Voice/X-Factor so they can be honorable members of the reality singing show club while having the 9th and 10th best selling albums.
Fantasia is the first actual reality singing contestant to show up and she is currently at 12th. Kelly Clarkson takes a jump up to 29th with her Greatest Hits and Carrie Underwood’s “Blown Away” is at 33rd. Phillip Phillips rounds out the set of four Idol winners at 36.
