HDD – Album Sales Prediction : Feb 20-26

With 37.17% of the chart reporting in, guess who is at the top of the chart! It should surprise nobody to hear that it is Adele, once again. This will be her 22nd week at the top and she was just certified 8 times platinum. All superlatives to describe the numbers for this album have already been used. The watch for diamond certification is on. Her previous album, “19” is number 6 so far this week.

Whitney continues to sell well. Now that Sony has a chance to rush copies of her albums into stores, she has 4 albums in the top 50: Number 2 (Greatest Hits), number 4 (Bodyguard), number 13 (Whitney Houston) and number 21 (I Look To You).

The top debut so far this week is fun.. That’s the name of the band, although it is kind of fun. fun. was probably little known outside of the indie world before Glee featured one of their songs earlier in the season. That produced a brief surge for the song. What really seems to be fueling the song, though, is that “We Are Young” was also used in a Superbowl ad that featured a Chevy Sonic parachuting, bungy jumping and doing skateboard tricks. It powered up the iTunes chart and stayed there (it is currently back at number 1). No doubt, that is helping move some units for the album as well. I also love the name of their label “Fueled by Ramen” (Travie McCoy and Gym Class Heroes are on that label as well).

fun. may not stay on top, though. Tyga is expected to eclipse that. He might have even taken on Adele herself if he hadn’t had to pull the physical copy of his album (it featured an uncleared sample from MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech) so it is only selling it’s digital version right now (I guess they just deleted the song on the digital version?). Currently, the album is at 8th. Interestingly, they predict it will do 70-80K in sales, so that means iTunes has probably not reported in yet. This album features Season 6 Idol Chris Richardson on one of its previous singles “Far Away”.

Now 41 is 2nd, Van Halen is 7th, Sleigh Bells are 9th and the Grammy Nominees round out the top 10 (featuring Kelly, Adam Levine, Christina and Blake).

Kelly Clarkson is our top solo idol at 18 and she also appears on Jason Aldean’s album (12), Now 40 (31) and the aforementioned Grammy album (10). Scotty is up next at 26th and Daughtry is at 48. Voice judges appear at 39 (Blake) and 49 (Adam Levine).
