Glee May Shift the Storyline Entirely to New York! (Or Kurt Moves to Russia?)

TV Line reports that Glee producers may cut out the Lima storylines entirely as early as this season.

Fox’s groundbreaking musical — which for the past year-plus has been splitting its focus between New York and Lima, OH — may shift the action entirely to the City That Never Sleeps as early as this season, sources confirm to TVLine exclusively.

It’s one of several ideas Fox is discussing with Glee creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, who have been forced to reexamine all aspects of the show in the wake of Cory Monteith’s tragic death in July.

The New York storyline, following the post graduate adventures of Rachel (Lea Michele), Kurt (Chris Colfer), Santana (Naya Rivera) and eventually Artie (Kevin McHale), Blaine (Darren Criss)  in the big city is the best part of Glee at this point. The newbies–Marley (Melissa Benoist), Jake (Jacob Artist), Ryder (Blake Jenner) and Kitty (Becca Tobin)–haven’t really caught on in a big way. The plotlines and characters in Lima are mostly rehash of past seasons, while the New York City stories are fresh and new. The recent death of star, Cory Monteith, is forcing brass to rethink the plot that would take Glee through Season six, and the end of the series.

I think the operative phrase here, however, is “one of several ideas FOX is discussing” it sounds like they are at the “tossing ideas around stage.” Nothing is set in stone. Glee will leave the air in December for a long hiatus, and won’t be back until spring. The action will end after Nationals and graduation. Shifting the focus entirely on New York woudn’t be difficult.

Important to note: If it happens, the show would still film in Los Angeles with occasional trips to the city for location shooting, just as it’s done now.

Personally, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a New York City centric Glee. Cut down the unwieldy cast and concentrate on wrapping up the stories of the characters we have come to know and love over the years.

What do you think?

ETA:  One story idea is moving Kurt to Russia? That according to E News.

The Fox hit is considering moving a major storyline—and its most notable gay character— to Russia for the sixth and (presumably) final season, according to multiple insiders who work on the show. “We are mulling around the idea of moving Kurt (Chris Colfer) to Russia,” says one source, adding that creatorRyan Murphy and his production team are entertaining three possible ideas for the final year. One is to move the series’ storyline solely to New York City. Another is to move Kurt to Russia. And another remains to be seen, but could possibly include McKinley High (the series’ original home).

I think someone at Glee may be trolling Kristin Dos Santos. In any case, the rumor gave E! the opportunity to one up TV Line. I wonder what’s next? The Wrap reports Ryan Murphy plans to rocket Blaine and Sam to the moon?

Presumably, Kurt’s storyline would have him coming up against the anti-gay laws just passed in Russia. I hate when Ryan turns his characters into walking PSAs. Keep Kurt in New York and allow him to play out a solid and satisfying ending to his Glee journey. Please don’t shoot him off course at this stage of the game.

Ultimately, this could all be hot air. A case of entertainment sites trumping up idle chatter into more than it actually is. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get the same ole same ole through the run of the series.
