David Archuleta’s debut album drops today! And I have to say, David’s first effort is a solid pop album. Post-Idol records are put together quickly, with the usual roster of professional songwriters, so they can’t help but sound at least a bit generic. David’s debut is no exception, but the producers did a good job of putting together a pleasing record that contains a little bit of everything–tween pop, ballads, a little rock–that should keep his fans happy, and win a few new ones along the way.
My favorites: The single “Crush” is an effervescent and melodic bit of pop that’s simultaneously teen-pleasing and an adult’s perfect guilty pleasure. Co-written by David and JC Chasez, “Don’t Let Go” has a distinct adult alternative vibe–I hear David’s future in this song–it’s going straight on to my iPod. “Running” has a hooky, sweet chorus that keeps the song stuck in my head. “To Be With You” is a pretty ballad, made prettier with Kara DioGuardi’s lovely vocal counterpoint.
Not liking it so much: “Your Eyes Don’t Lie”– I’m not buying David performing this slinky, sexy arrangement.
One last thing. I said during the competition that I didn’t think David could cut it on pop radio. I’ll admit it. I was wrong. Happy now? Hee.
