DWTS 32 Spoilers: Semi-Final Dance Styles, Song Choices

Ariana and Pasha – Jive – “Runaway Baby”

I feel like we haven’t seen enough Jive this season, maybe I’m just blanking on them all. Ariana is one of those dancers who looks good on the bottom half but not so good on the top half. Fun routine, love to see those kicks and flicks, and love getting to see so much more of Pasha this season. Ariana doesn’t look as into the dance as Pasha.

Derek says she’s running toward the finale with this dance but says it got “heavy” at some parts. Bruno says it was bright and sassy and sexy. Carrie Ann says she has everything she needs to win, but then asks what her injury is because she feels she holds back. Ariana says it’s related to her ribs and Carrie Ann realizes it explains why Ariana doesn’t fully use her arms (this makes sense to me now as well).

Scores after the break!

Carrie Ann- 9, Derek- 9, Bruno- 10 = 28/30

Jason and Daniella – Viennese Waltz – “I Won’t Give Up”

I can’t tell you how much I love this song and how I always forget what a good song it is to dance to. Gorgeous outfits too. Jason is really out here perfecting his arms and hands and fingers in this dance and I’m so here for it. This dance doesn’t look like it came as easily to him as previous ones. He nailed the rotation though.

Bruno says it was beautiful and proper and he dances like a gentleman, but says he could use more drive in his rotation. Carrie Ann says it was refined but she would have liked to see more emotional freedom. Derek thanks him for writing that stunning song and calls this dance beautiful, but says it was more like plucking guitar strings rather than strumming guitar strings.

Carrie Ann- 9, Derek- 9, Bruno- 9 = 27/30

Xochitl and Val – Samba – “Samba”

Xochitl looks like she’s thinking way too much about the steps, and she’s also not exuding enough rhythm/Latin motion for a Samba. This routine looks too challenging for her. It was such a good attempt but this just didn’t feel like her best. She looks so full of joy doing it though.

Carrie Ann says it was spectacular and one of the most difficult routines they’ve ever seen (and I only agree with half of this statement). Derek says he didn’t like it, he loved it! Bruno says all of America is partying after that and she’s the Samba diva.

Yet again, one of those moments where I swear the judges are watching a different show. Or maybe I’m just too harsh of a judge…

Carrie Ann- 10, Derek- 10, Bruno- 10 = 30/30

Charity and Artem – Rumba – “Love The Way You Lie Part III”

Charity is such a good dancer but she’s never flowy enough. Beautiful routine, seemed short though. Something about it almost felt more like Contemporary than Rumba to me. Charity did a great job emoting this dance though.

Derek says she made the dance look effortless and compliments her leg action, but she was still lacking a bit of emotion. Bruno takes over and gets on top of Derek because he disagrees and thinks Charity did emote well. Carrie Ann says she had the breakthrough and it was artistry in motion.

Carrie Ann- 10, Derek- 9, Bruno- 10 = 29/30

Alyson and Sasha – Jive – “Footloose”

Not sure why these two got such an elaborate set with the big, neon guitar and cowboy boot and the cowboy boot disco ball, but okay. Alyson is such a joy to watch, she just makes you want to join in and dance. Technically, this dance started out a mess, but she picked it up in the middle. She’s much better with partner work than solo. Kicks and flicks were a tragedy, why didn’t Sasha teach her how to properly do them?? The amount of things I screamed at the screen during this…

Bruno says he loved the country western feel but there were a couple of errors. Carrie Ann says it was a tough routine and Alyson’s journey was fantastic and she assures people that anyone can dance. Derek says she’s a fighter and he enjoyed watching her despite a few issues here and there.

Carrie Ann- 9, Derek- 8, Bruno- 8 = 25/30

The DWTS Tour pros perform a group number, but there are only five of them on the floor and one is the host so I’m confused what this is.

Jason and Daniella – Paso Doble – “Diablo Rojo”

Daniella could make any dance entertaining, even my least favorite style. Love her dress too. Something about the way Jason moved in this dance wasn’t appealing, but he’s got great arms for a dance like this. The way they both spun each other at the end was cool too.

Carrie Ann is standing when she asks if she can give Jason a hug, then says it’s not always about perfection, she’s looking for magic. Derek says he Paso-ed all over that Doble, it was proper and he was fierce. Bruno says it was diabolical and Jason was possessed by the devil apparently.

Scores after the break!

Carrie Ann- 10, Derek- 10, Bruno- 10 = 30/30

Xochitl and Val – Waltz – “La Vie en Rose”

Xochitl being an actress makes her dances so much fun to watch, there’s always a story. What a beautiful, elegant routine. I love the way Val gave Xochitl her own moment at the end.

Derek says Len would have loved this dance and it was perfect. Bruno says it was magnificent and she’s an artist, then says, “there is dancing, then there is artistry.” Carrie Ann says she touched her heart and she never wanted it to end.

Carrie Ann- 10, Derek- 10, Bruno- 10 = 30/30

Charity and Artem – Quickstep – “BO$$”

Her shoes look like bowling shoes. She’s nailing this dance, and it made me realize it’s because she’s much better in hold than solo. The touch of Charleston was fun. Kudos to Artem because this looked like a routine I’d love to do.

Bruno says she hit the swing time, big time, and she has sass and pizzazz. Carrie Ann says when she has fun, we have fun, and it was filled with content. Derek gives her the big, slow clap and says she made a difficult dance look easy.

Carrie Ann- 10, Derek- 10, Bruno- 10 = 30/30

Alyson and Sasha – Waltz -“Come Away With Me”

I love Alyson’s dress. Such a gorgeous, classic song too. If Alyson just had rise and fall in her steps, this would be near perfect. Alyson also isn’t flowy enough, but this dance was just so sweet and symbolic of their relationship.

Carrie Ann says she’s proud of her and she dances with emotional vulnerability, despite a few footwork errors. Derek says this was her best dance and she’s a perfect example of how to approach this show. Bruno says it had dream-like quality and the timing was perfect and it came out of her naturally.

Carrie Ann- 8, Derek- 9, Bruno- 9 = 26/30

Ariana and Pasha – Foxtrot – “Trampoline”

Love love love the color of those outfits. She’s giving Elsa in that dress. This was a great, classic Foxtrot until they added in that hoppy, skippy step and it just added a sense of fun to what was more of a serious dance.

Derek says it was smooth, silky, sensual and sensational. Bruno says she unleashed the fox in the Foxtrot. Carrie Ann says she left it on the ballroom and it was a wonderful way to end the semi-finals.

Carrie Ann- 10, Derek- 10, Bruno- 10 = 30/30

The couple going home is… NO ONE.

For the first time ever, there will be five couples in the finale and tonight’s scores will carry over to next week!

Dancing with the Stars 32 - PASHA PASHKOV, ALYSON HANNIGAN, SASHA FARBER, XOCHITL GOMEZ
(Disney/Eric McCandless) PASHA PASHKOV, ALYSON HANNIGAN, SASHA FARBER, XOCHITL GOMEZ

That was a shocker. I was not expecting ALyson to go through (even though I love her), and my money was on Ariana being eliminated over Xochitl, but all five of these couples are so deserving. See you next week for the finale!
