  1. This concert was amazing, and I love ‘I Run For Life’, what an inspiring, wonderful song.

  2. WOW WOW WOW, what a difference seeing and hearing this recorded by professionals. When Melissa entered with a whole band, made me realize how much may be missing to Crystals performances compared to only a guitar and bass. Crystal, get yourself a band ASAP!

Melissa sure knows how to put on a show, just super. And what an inspiration she must be to cancer patience. If you know anyone suffering, be sure to show them when she and Crystal perform “I Run For Life”

  3. Crystal has already got the hard part down pat. It gets easier with a band behind you. She sounded great!

  4. I didn’t watch the full show but what I saw was very nice. I’m glad Crystal has a kind of ‘mentor’ like Melissa.

  5. I was never a big Melissa Etheridge fan, I remember listening to her on the radio back in the late 70s. I’m a fan now, she puts on a great show. Crystal put on a good show and I agree that a good band would compliment her sound.

  6. Crystal sounded really wonderful and Melissa brought the house down. I also agree with the full band for Crystal and I hope they bring in people who can compliment each other like what Frankie May is to Crystal and vice versa. Crystal’s set made me really miss the good ol mtv unplugged shows- Eric Clapton, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Alanis etc. She sounded really good live :=)

Melissa is surely a force to be reckoned with. Absolutely stellar, powerful performance. loved the lil medleys with her bassist n guitarist- I hope everyone checks it out n everyone contributes to this worthy cause :=)

  7. Melissa gave an amazing powerful performance. Crystal is a good singer, but she really lacks charisma. It’s particularly obvious when she is side by side with someone who has it.

  8. I’m not too worried about the charisma thing. That comes with experience as a performers confidence grows. For a newcomer I think Crystal is doing great. I remember Carrie Underwood when she started and look at her now.

  9. I saw Melissa back in the 90s when ‘Yes I Am’ was big, one of the best concerts I’d ever seen. She’s got amazing presence. I will never forget some guitar writhing on the ground, she was electric. :) I Run for Life is a good song, I’d like to run to that one on the ipod.

  10. It’s particularly obvious when she is side by side with someone who has it.

I don´t completely agree, but to some extend. But the same would apply and probably even more so, to any of the Idols coming fresh from the show. It would also IMO, apply to most of the seasoned artists out there, if they performed side by side to Melissa, especially in HER show and her songs

For a newcomer I think Crystal is doing great. I remember Carrie Underwood when she started and look at her now.

I agree, I don´t even think Carrie would have done better NOW under similar circumstances, let alone, fresh from AI.

  11. I agree about the charisma issue with Crystal. And I don’t think its because of a lack of experience. Heck, she’s been on stage since she was a little girl. My sense is its more a combination of self-protection and self-containment as a result of her upbringing. Its possible that bigger stages combined with time and distance could change the situation. But really, charisma is something intrinsic to a person. Either you have it or you don’t. Its not a learned expression. It that was the case, we’d have a lot more wannabees reaching the big-time. The only chance is if she’s been suppressing it, although I would think if that was the case, it would have been released by the Idol experience. We’ll see.

ETA: Also, I really wonder if she’s got her diabetes fully under control. It still seems to me that its touch and go. She just doesn’t seem to me to have a strong vitality.

  12. For a newcomer I think Crystal is doing great. I remember Carrie Underwood when she started and look at her now.

The problem with Crystal is that she has a long way to go, even compared to other idol newcomers.
It’s possible that she will eventually get there with time, but we’ll see.

  13. movin2thabeet Not sure about your theory. Remember when Crystal and Lee joined Joe Cocker? There I saw Crystal lose herself. Great presence I hadn´t seen before during the season. Poor Lee looked like fish out of water, but I´m not ready to judge his future because of it.

The years that Crystal has performed, have mostly been solo or only with Franky in small bars with people just popping in for a drink etc. So, IMO, she is conditioned from that and her experience thus not serving her, but to the contrary, she may need to unlearn and break old patterns of performing. Of course, well IMO, if you´re right, everyone coming from this season and most others are doomed to have shortage of charisma.

Crystal was also in her element when she performed with Franti doing Talking Heads. She´s articulate when she speaks, so when she has her own band and is doing her “new” thing, I can see her presence and stage charisma take off. Being with Melissa, mostly unrehearsed, doing her songs on her stage, will IMO, make most everyone look a little small.

  14. The problem with Crystal is that she has a long way to go, even compared to other idol newcomers.

When referring to last season, she has a lot more than any of the others, IMO. So that statement doesn´t make any sense to me.

What ever appeals people like Melissa, Franti and Linda Perry to Crystal will also show up on stage soon enough :)

  15. Very interesting points about charisma. Other than comparing a fully grown and polished artist with critical acclaim whose musical career spans more than 4 decades with an upcoming and new artist whose been playing in coffee shops and bars most of her life who is still grasping that ‘instant celebrity’ status, you could also see that on stage when they appeared together that one was clearly in just awe admiration ‘OMG i cant believe i am on stage with her’ in ones eyes. I think Melissa saw that as well, and was trying to help her push the boundaries, giving her cues and signals which IMO she worked out pretty well. This actually reminded me of quote from a book about Pearl Jam called Five Against One where Eddie Vedder says ‘he’d rather be in the crowd in a Neil Young’s concert than performing on stage’. Pearl Jam talks alot about Neil’s work and were heavily influneced by his music and showmanship so he was their idol. I get the feeling from Melissa and Crystals duets that Crystal sometimes forgets she is on stage with her idol and was just enjoying it from the crowd. I know if I was in a Melissa concert I’d rather be in the crowd than up on the stage & I can fully understand why Crystal might feel this as well :=). But nevertheless she was able to held her own (didnt do any major cockups), coming fresh to the scene with Melissa who is one of the best female rockers and performers out there. I think she did a pretty decent job of it.

I am also glad that Crystal will a learn a thing or two from Melissa, Franti (and perhaps Linda Perry) about showmanship and performing to the audience because both of them are excellent in that area. Crystal was also thankful for the things she learned on AI like performing without her guitar or as how she puts it ‘walking in heels and performing’, and the songs she did which wasn’t in her typical repetoire, songs like I’am Alright and Maybe I Am Amazed as well as learning about the biz, which makes her open for improvements and suggestions by others. I think there is potential in Crystal and she will eventually learn to show off that showmanship to the audience. Plus Melissa has said that Crystal reminds her of when she was young, so maybe Melissa wasn’t this ‘charismatic’ back then :=) I am sure she would also have grown a lot in time. itd be interesting to see what she learns from her mentors.

  16. I’ve never really listened to Crystal’s songs before, but after listening to this, I have to say that I do like them for those mellow mood days.

  17. If it wasn´t for Melissa’s exceptional stage presence, I don´t think this discussion would be taking place. When I think back on all the guest performers last season, even so called superstars such as Usher and Miley, NONE of the them had any stage presence or charisma that spoke to me. Only exception would maybe be Adam. Kris, Danny and Alison performed ok, but had none of the so called charisma and presence. Guess what I´m trying to say is, Melissa is very special and not the norm among singers. But IMO, Crystal easily holds her own among most others. What she does better than most others, is how she sings and delivers a song. That is what matters to me, since my listening will be 99% blind

  18. That is what matters to me, since my listening will be 99% blind

Me too. Crystal has such an amazing voice! I love some of her songs, but wish others had a bit more hook. I notice the audience in the video comes alive when C starts singing covers.

  19. I notice the audience in the video comes alive when C starts singing covers.

Thats pretty obvious isnt it. People will be more familiar with songs already out there.

but wish others had a bit more hook.

I think it depends on the song really. I think the majority of Crystals songs out there (certainly the ones we’ve heard so far) are very intimate and personal stories about her life. So you cannot like ask for a call and response from the audience or project a happy mood when you are singing those songs. But defintely for some others like Kiss Ya, Sandman there is potential for more instrumentation or ‘play around’. I am excited to see the changes that David Benett is gonna bring to these songs or if they dont make the cut any other “uplifting” songs on her album. I think that Sista Otis track Love is Spiritual is another one to look forward to :=)

  20. Thanks for the link to the performance. As a BC survivor myself I hope a lot of people download the song I Run For Life on Tuesday as proceeds go to BC research. As I said in a previous post, the song was my lifeline during treatment. The song has very special meaning to me and many others. There are over 2 million BC survivors in the US; however, unfortunately 40,000 die every year and the age of diagnosis is getting younger and younger. We need to find a cure for our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends.

OKay, I’m off my soap box – BIG HUGS and Thanks to Crystal and Melissa. They are doing good.

I think she looks quite healthy much better than some of the nights on AI, but ofcos if you are a diabetic then your blood sugar will vary and it is a concern. But she has said shes got the new sensor now and I think there is dedicated person to look after her, health-wise (i rember an interview when she said tt, not sure which one). It could really be mistaken for ‘getting into the song’ because she definitely does that for her originals when she sings them :=)

Thank you Lucy1234 :=) I will definitely be buying the single on 26th and I have already spread the word to my close friends and family. Both Melissa and Crystal has done a wonderful job in creating awareness for this cause. I am sure alot of CB fans and even other idol fans would like to contribute to this cause because like you said it really affects everyone around us. Thank you again for coming here and posting :=) best of luck to you :)

  23. Thanks so much for the vid, MJ! Crystal sounds awesome, and carries herself with incredible poise on stage. I said during her Idol run that she was several levels above the show, and it continues to be proven out via post-Idol performances such as this one.

  24. Kris, Danny and Alison performed ok, but had none of the so called charisma and presence.

I wouldn’t group these three together, some have more charisma than others. Charisma is different from stage presence, it is an innate charm that you can’t really acquire, you have it or you don’t.

  25. Thanks MJ for the link to this. I would have never found it without you! I watched the whole thing, and while I agree that Crystal needs a band and isn’t Melissa Etheridge, she did great. She was up there with one of her idols (no pun intended) and held her own. She’ll do fine — she just needs time to hone her performance skills.

  26. BTW, that version of What’s Up was the best I have ever heard her perform. Her voice really sounded rested and powerful.

  27. I also have to say that while I appreciate what the full band can offer, I really dig her unplugged sound and vibe.

  28. I also have to say that while I appreciate what the full band can offer, I really dig her unplugged sound and vibe.

I agree. When Crystal does get herself a full band, I don´t think she´ll over do it with noise, but only add enough to give that extra fullness and some dynamics when called for, in other words, compliment not bury. I hate when things get all muddy and therefore prefer clean sound. Also I think it will separate and give more contrast between various songs. So, even the stripped down songs or portions of songs, will stand more out and be better appreciated

  29. negativo:

I’m with you on that one. Her voice is her weapon and unplugged stipped down versions brings the best outta of her voice. The clarity and projection is just beautiful. I hope she stays true to her core even though a full band would be nice for some of her songs.
