Blake Lewis loves his 80’s cheese.
His new CD, “Audio Day Dream” runs the gamut through 80’s music, from new wave, to Prince-like funk and cheesy prom songs. Listening to the CD is little like riding a Disneyland ride, circa 1985. Here’s my experience:
“Break Anotha” – The single has grown on me, I love the propulsive beat and break-neck pace. “Got’s to Get Her” – It’s pretty good–a bit of Spanish flavor, but I can’t stop thinking about that horrible Taco song from the 80’s. “Know My Name” – Lupe does a cool rap. “How Many Words” LOVE LOVE the layered vocals. “Surrender” – Yer losin’ me here bud. Crappy 80’s riffs=Ugh. “Hate 2 Love Her” – Ewww. Bland. “Without You” – Did someone just put on a Backstreet Boys record? Bleah. “Here’s My Hello” Yikes, did “Haircut 100” lose their b-side? Oh noes!
But then, “Watcha Got 2 Lose” brings me back around. Nice groove. Good job Chris Rich! “She’s Makin Me Lose It” – Cool Prince vibe. Me Likey! “End of the World” It’s the 1985 prom! Where’s Matthew Modine when you need him? I have a soft spot for melodic prom songs. Eep. “1000 Miles” – Love this. Nice indie vibe. “I Got U” – Pretty ballad. Me likes.
The songs are hooked together with intros and outros. The first listen should be all in one sitting. My verdict: First Idol efforts always suffer due to the compromises the artist is usually forced to make. I’m still holding on to my mantra, “Wait for the second album, ” Despite the fact that the middle sags, I think the CD is a solid first effort.
AOL has the album streaming here. Check it out.
