It’s official. Simon Cowell is the new Paula Abdul. Thank god for Mel B. and Heidi Klum, who are often the voice of reason on that panel. Remember on American Idol finales when Simon would undercut the singers he didn’t think should win? None of that going on here tonight! He praised every single act, even when obvious mistakes were made, or an act didn’t perform their personal best.

Actually, Simon is snarkier over on the X Factor in England. Having the biggest summer show in America must put Simon in a good mood.
As far as tonight’s acts were concerned. I haven’t changed my mind much on who I think will advance. Darci Lynne, the young ventriloquist, is still in a very good position to win. But Mandy Harvey could give her a run for her money. Evie Clair’s fresh grief after the loss of her father underpinned a deeply felt performance from the young singer. But don’t count out young Angelica Hale. I think she’s got people.
