American Idol 9 Top 20 – What Should The Idols Sing?

Update 2: Possible spoiler for Casey James is Gavin DeGraw’s “I Don’t Want To Be” via @WeHoDaily. Thanks @MissGolightly22

Game of Thrones Episode 2: The Lost Lords Review

UPDATE: The official website has the guys performing tonight and the girls tomorrow…Not quite sure what’s going on at the moment…

After saying goodbye to 4 contestants last week, we’re down to 20, with the Top 10 girls performing tonight, and the Top 10 guys tomorrow.

Hopefully, the kids have shaken off the nerves, reconsidered song choices and will take the stage with renewed confidence.

It all begins with song selection. Unfortunately, the wide-open theme, Billboard singles, has perhaps been a little overwhelming for some of the contestants. Bad choices cut short the promising Idol runs of Ashley Rodriguez and Janell Wheeler. Will the kids who made bad choices, yet managed to advance make better choices this week? And will those who chose smart continue to choose wisely?

Good song choices or no, so far, the performances have been uninspired from this bunch. Right about now, Season 9 needs a few moments, or peeps are going to start tuning out…

What should the Idols sing this week? Katie Stevens needs to pick young, Didi Benami should choose against type, Crystal Bowersox would impress the judges picking a rock song from a male artist, John Park should go R&B, and forget jazz, and Casey James should think about going a little more contemporary…

What do you think?

  1. I don’t care what they sing as long as it doesn’t SUCK!

Check out the photo, specifically at Lambert’s face. He looks scared. The girls, most have their prom girl faces on and the guys, too cool for school.

  2. Yay song picking is my favorite kind of speculation. I know I posted these last week but this is for everyone who didn’t see lol. a lot of these songs weren’t Billboard top 10s but they are on the cleared list which Idol Maniac at idolforums said they can choose from also.

    Haeley-Me and Charlie Talking-Miranda Lambert
Alex lambert-Come on get Higher-Matt Nathanson

    John -Mercy Mercy Me-Marvin Gaye

  3. I need to ponder this a bit, but having just watched Hollywood, the only time I was impressed in the least by Casey was during his first Hollywood performance. That gritty, bluesy, almost rockabilly-type vocal that emerged from him is way more intriguing than the soft rock AM tripe he attempts to do. He needs to somehow express some actual emotion in that face, too, but that type of song would at least make him less…beige. And if so, THEN I can deal with all the cougar antics a lot easier. Ugh.

  4. I would love to hear Crystal sing a Patty Griffin song….”Rain” is awesome. I don’t think anyone has sung that on AI. Maybe it’s not available.

“koshka Am with you. Please don’t suck tonight idol.”

Ditto for me! I am not expecting any great performances, I just don’t want them to stink like last week.

  6. I don’t know what the theme is but I was listening to Almost Lover by A Fine Frenzy a few hours ago and thought that would be perfect for Didi Benami. Her voice will fit it perfectly. But, maybe that will bore America to death?

  7. I don’t know what the theme is but I was listening to Almost Lover by A Fine Frenzy a few hours ago and thought that would be perfect for Didi Benami. Her voice will fit it perfectly. But, maybe that will bore America to death?

Have you seen Katelyn’s cover of it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aDMMzUlC8g

  8. Remember that all songs must have ranked somewhere on the Billboard Top 200 at some point.

Unfortunately, I know jackshit about that. So many random songs could’ve placed as low as #196, which leaves the field pretty wide open for the more interesting, albeit lower-ranking, singles.

  9. I have no idea what they should sing. But that has not stopped me from ass talking before, so here you go:

Aaron – Country or something midtempo popish that lends itself to a twang. Sing on key. And make a play of the love of tweens everywhere by looking in to the camera all doe-eyed while emitting wholesomeness. They love that crap.

Jermaine – a simple R&B song, stick to the melody for most of the song and build to the runs… don’t attack the entire thing. It’s not like its trying to steal your wallet.

Big Mike – Don’t strap that guitar on again… you look like a sumo wrestler playing the ukelele. Just pick something in your range and sing it – some John Mayer type pop/folk/rockish stuff would be good for you. Don’t be a dick as soon as you stop singing.

John – Sing midtempo R&B. Pick something by a female singer that lends itself to a key drop so you can milk the baritone. Go for romantic. And don’t bore me.

Casey – This would be a good time for a moment. Pull out whatever the showstopper is in your repertoire. I know you have one, you’ve been singing forever. Do not make eye contact with Kara.

Andrew – Could we not do acoustic again? Try to surprise us. You have a repertoire if standbys too, just like Casey. Just sing whatever has the most YouTube views and let the band play it.

Lee – Ignore Kara. Rock up a pop song and don’t go off key. Try not to look constipated. Look surprised and humbled when they compare you to David Cook. You know they are gonna do it and so do we, but the Idol audiences likes surprised and humble even when it is totally insincere.

Todrick – You are such a douchnozzle you might have to pull a Kristy Lee Cook and sing something patriotic or about loving your mama. Seriously. You can sing and perform though, just find a way not to make everyone nauseous afterward.

Tim Urban – Take of your shirt. Sing on key but jump around the stage like a moron to make VFTW happy. Embrace the Sanjaya.

I’ll do the girls in a little while. That’s all I got for now.

  10. Just MY PICK;

    -haeley; tik tok ,LOL
-andrew garcia; fireflies by Owl City, it will be great, because that owl city song really overproduced voice, and andrew have a great voice, acoustic again maybe??… just imo.
-lee; use somebody by kings of leon
-casey; you and me by lifehouse
    -michelle; sweet dreams by beyonce
    -siobhan; solitare
    -jermaine; my boo by usher&alicia
-aaron; she will be love – maroon 5

  11. Gangreene, those are some great ideas! I ESP. Think Miranda Lambert for Hayley is all kinds of awesome.

  12. What Should the Idols Sing?

Arguably, several of them should not sing. Ever. Such as. . .

Tim Urban – Take of your shirt. Sing on key but jump around the stage like a moron to make VFTW happy. Embrace the Sanjaya.

    LOL!

It’s always interesting to see how the contestants interpret the judges comments in these early rounds. I suspect that Andrew will come out and do another acoustic cover of a bad female pop song like “Straight Up” again since that’s more “original” in the heads of the judges. Hopefully Lee will try singing on key, since his performance was otherwise fine. I don’t think Jermaine is capable of restraining himself, so he’ll probably screech like a dying cat on a more contemporary song. Crystal has probably learned by now that performing a David Bowie song is not actually an option on this show. She’ll probably do something by a male artist, though. Casey should button his shirt, calm his hair down and try not to look the cover of a bad romance novel. Oh, and no more cheesy songs.

I hope Siobhan tackles a rock song – I think I saw Zombie by the Cranberries on the cleared list and it’s on her band’s myspace. Although that would probably make America scratch their heads a bit, I would love it. I have a feeling that Michelle is so comfortable in her Diva box she’s going to come out with an extremely competent karaoke cover of a Beyonce song. Aaron will earnestly sing some song that I hate and be pitchy again and get massive praise for it, probably in the pimp spot. Hopefully Alex will take to a stool with a guitar and sing a soulful ballad that shows off his rather cool voice. Something that will allow him to “emote” by, say, closing his eyes for 75% of the song so that he isn’t freaked out by the cameras.

  13. I would love to hear Crystal sing a Patty Griffin song….”Rain” is awesome.

    Yes! Yes! YES!

  14. -andrew garcia; fireflies by Owl City, it will be great, because that owl city song really overproduced voice, and andrew have a great voice, acoustic again maybe??… just imo.

NEVER. That song is horrendous, and there’s no redemption to it.

Haeley performing Ke$ha will be a VFTW legend <3.

  15. Big Mike – Don’t strap that guitar on again… you look like a sumo wrestler playing the ukelele.

Hahahaha. So true. I kept thinking stuff like… Hulk play guitar. Hulk sing! Simon no like? Hulk smaaash…

Siobhan/Zombie is a cool suggestion. I wonder, though, if Bandzilla can rock it out half as brilliantly as the Rock Star House Band?

  16. Hopefully they all learned from last week and can come out and impress. They all have no where to go but up from last week.

  17. You are such a douchnozzle you might have to pull a Kristy Lee Cook and sing something patriotic or about loving your mama.

Oh meo, mio, that was spit up funny.

  18. NEVER. That song is horrendous, and there’s no redemption to it.

I agree with this SO MUCH. That song is an atrocity.

  19. Lily-The Show-Lenka

I don’t think it helps the idols to sing a song when they have a voice like the original artist. I like The Show, but I’d rather hear a guy sing it.

andrew garcia; fireflies by Owl City, it will be great, because that owl city song really overproduced voice, and andrew have a great voice, acoustic again maybe??… just imo.

I agree with all of that. I like that song, and I’d like to hear it without the sound of the engineer pushing the buttons.

Oh, and no more cheesy songs.

I think this should be a rule for all 20. And maybe most of the 70s and some of the 80s should just be unavailable.

  20. The girls:

Lacey/Sibohhan – you are pretty much the same girl in the minds of America at this point: only one of you can sing and one of you can’t. Lacey has to be good or America will pick the other one – I would go with something melodic and midetmpo. Sibohhan should pick up the pace and perform a bit more. Show evidence of a personality.

Paige – she can actually sing. If she doesn’t show it this week she’s toast. I could see her picking something unexpected like Tracy Chapman w/Jordin and singing the hell out of it. Go for the pop or rock female song honey, and R&B it up.

Lily – has a talent for picking non-mainstream songs that somehow work on the Idol stage. She can carve a nice niche for herself as THE indie chick if she keeps that up. All she has to do is keep last week’s momentum going by not sucking.

Crystal – like everyone else said, a song by male rocker would work. It would help if its an unexpected male rocker though.. something not inherently blues/funky that she could make blues/funky. An upbeat song would be good, it would make her seem like she can have some fun on stage.

Kaetlyn – I think she’s in a good position because she’s flying a bit under the radar and she can actually sing and perform pretty well. This would be a good week to catch people by surprise. Don’t do that heavy makeup look again – Kara was right. Sing something contemporary with a little bit of sultriness and you could do really well.

Michelle – I don’t know. Have a personality? Not smile like you’ve just been botoxed? Don’t be a cliche diva? Who cares.

Haeley – Just sing on key honey. I’m setting the bar low for you.

Didi – Pick an obvious sad folky song and sing it better than you did last week. Cry. America likes it when you cry. Look confident through the tears. You always seem like you are sacred the audience is going to throw rotten apples at you. Just be pretty and vulnerable, not needy and desperate.

  21. You guys gotta stop, this isnt good for me after a week long bout of the uglies, My stomach cant take this. LOL Cant wait for more.
    Entertainment at its best!!!!

  22. I agree with this SO MUCH. That song is an atrocity.

    Good (wo)man!

Anyone with taste/indie cred knows that’s just a cheap and pedantic rip-off of The Postal Service’s brilliance.

  23. I’d like to hear one of the girls sing Changes (David Bowie). Maybe Siobhan. She needs an upbeat song after Wicked Game last week.

  24. Big Mike – Don’t strap that guitar on again… you look like a sumo wrestler playing the ukelele.

    ROTFL!!!!

  25. Good (wo)man!

Anyone with taste/indie cred knows that’s just a cheap and pedantic rip-off of The Postal Service’s brilliance.

I’m a guy by the way. Hahaha.

You sound just like my officemate who has great taste in music. She keeps telling me the same thing, actually. LOL.

  26. John – Love Lockdown, but the Patrick Stump version of it. That would save him definitely, if he could only keep it in key.

That is such a great idea. A pick like that would redeem John, and anything by Kanye West has a small range, so no fear that he can’t sing it.

  27. Tim Urban looks just as scared as Alex Lambert. Under no circumstances should he sing something with falsetto. Or a range of more than four notes.

  28. Big Mike – Don’t strap that guitar on again… you look like a sumo wrestler playing the ukelele.

    hilarious!!!!

  29. One thing I like about Tim Urban is at least he picks contemporary songs that are challenging like Cook’s Come Back to Me and Apologize. I agree that Alex should play an instrument and sit down, I give him props for trying to sing without it for his first live performance. One thing I like about some of the younger contestants is that they really don’t seem to sing what will avoid getting them eliminated and is safe. Sometimes it is a trainwreck, but alot more interesting than someone who plays it safe and makes every song sound the same.

  30. tinawina: LOL to your entire (1st) post!

huckleberryfriend: Hearing Chuck E someday is one of my most treasured Idol fantasies, along with Rocky Horror Picture Show night and any of the following Blondie songs being sung on the Idol stage: Shayla, Dreaming, Sunday Girl, or (I will vote my fingers to the bone for) Die Young Stay Pretty (even if Katie sang it).

Last year one of my most treasured Idol fantasies came true in the most spectacular way with Cyndi Lauper not only appearing but playing the dulcimer AND dueting with Allison! Squeeee!

Because Haley is reminding me of her I’d love to see her sing “Me Myself I” by Joan Armatrading. I know it’s not a Billboard hot 100 but just indulge me in my fantasy.

BTW, my username, Laceylou, is based on the name of my cat, Lacey, and in no way should be compared to any Idol contestants, current or otherwise…

  31. Not a lot of Lacey love here!! Believe me, this girl has talent, otherwise she’d be gone from last performance. (I’ve heard her sing in person, this chick is good… she just got REALLY nervous)

ANYWHO – I hope Lacey really shows off her vocals tonight with something a bit more India.Arie Video ish… maybe sixpence there she goes — maybe even nelly furtado i’m like bird

  32. Top 20 is when Melinda sang “My Funny Valentine” and instantly became my favorite of season 6.

Top 20 is also when David Cook became a top 12 finalist(IMO) when he rocked “Hello”.

this season’s Top 24, there were no Lakisha or David Archuleta.

there are no frontrunner(yet) this season, but there are favorites.
a great performance in Top 20 is a sure ticket to Top 12.

contestants doesnt have to be “original”, they just need to know another version of a popular song and put there own twist into it.
the judges just know the original versions, anyway. or just rock the dang song.

  33. Lily – has a talent for picking non-mainstream songs that somehow work on the Idol stage. She can carve a nice niche for herself as THE indie chick if she keeps that up. All she has to do is keep last week’s momentum going by not sucking.

I agree. Lilly’s my sleeper pick, provided she keeps making interesting choices that work for television purposes. America “getting” her is the big question mark for me.

  34. No matter what song Tim chooses, it just doesn’t matter. He is a terrible singer. The judges should have left him… behind. I agree with Simon’s comment last week that they made a mistake by bringing him on board the top 24.

  35. I kept thinking stuff like… Hulk play guitar. Hulk sing! Simon no like? Hulk smaaash…

    BBWWWWAAAAAHHHH!!! sunchick, I love you.

I totally forgot about Alex and Katie. Wow, that is such the Freudian slip right there. I do not care one whit about either of them. Okay then…

Alex – I do agree he should sit down and play an instrument if he can… it will give his hands something to do and it might help with the scared little boy vibe. Don’t sing James Morrison dude, those judges will call you karaekoe. Sing something contemporary again.

Katie – She can sing. But she is like grandma’s favorite crooner – “Oh she reminds me of one of the Andrew sisters, now that was music!” – so just no. Katie, stop sucking up to grandma. She’ll give you candy no matter what you do. Trying playing to those of us who listen to music from this millenium. An stop staring into the camera as if you know we are home AMAZED because you are ONLY 16!!! Been there, done that, chick. Stand in one spot and sing something dramatic, slow and contemporary.. maybe one of Rhianna’s ballads?

  36. I wish that I had early onset Alzheimer’s, so I could forget Katie is a contestant.

  37. Sorry…NO on the fireflies song, (it should only be sung by Raffi) and YES on forgetting that Katie is a contestant.

  38. Aaron, Katie, and John…. well, actually, maybe a lot of these contestants…. need to go younger. Aaron and Katie can have a strong teen appeal, and John was pretty old-fashioned last week.

If someone’s doing Sweet Dreams by Beyonce, I’d rather have it inspired by her live ballad version >_>. The original version is kinda boring to me. Then again, I don’t know who would be able to deliver that.

Maybe I’m in the minority, but I really liked the top 24 and thought that for the most part the group the judges (*cough*producers*cough) picked was pretty decent (though it excluded some major talent for suck, though that always happens >_>). I think a lot of them have major talent. However, at the same time, a lot of them don’t know how to show it without blending in too much or being too cliche, which is why last week was pretty horrible.

Either way, what does that mean about Didi? Did you miss a word or something, MJ?

I’m only really paying attention to my favorites, so this is what I’d do.

Aaron, go younger before you turn into the Archuleta of the season. Granted, I was a huge Archuleta fan, but the ballad stuff will get tired.

Crystal, fix up a male rock song. I agree with MJ. Show more edge and grit.

Casey, do something more recent. Casey reminds me quite a bit of Bo Bice, for some reason. Maybe some southern rock? The performance of Bo that came to mind was “I Don’t Want To Be”. I don’t know a whole lot of Gavin DeGraw, though. Could Casey benefit from going that way?

Lilly, you played it well last week. However, I’d say to do a bit more edge, too, like Crystal.

Andrew, for once, DON’T change up a song. Once again, I was a huge fan of Kris Allen, but same thing; the arranging songs thing will get tired. Especially if Andrew only does acoustic versions. Don’t be the Gokey of this season. If all you’re going to do is acoustic guitar renditions of songs, I don’t want you on the tour, and every conversation I’ll have with my friend will involve her saying “stfu” to me because you’ll bore me and she’s a bigger fan than I am. I’d like to see you NOT change up a song. It’ll be a challenge to not sound karaoke, too. I think you can do it.

Siobhan, think about your performance of the Stevie Wonder song. That was an excellent standout performance. Also, I applaud you for singing a male song to distance yourself from the other women. So this goes for anyone, but especially Siobhan, to think about what set her apart from everyone else last week and during Hollywood week.

Other people I want to see general change in….
Todrick, stop being a douche and just sing, dammit. You’re a good singer and rearranger, but I don’t want your bleeping cockiness on my television, I’d rather you jump off a bridge or something.

Jermaine, you lost me when you did Carry On Wayward Son. Learn the difference between “taking a song to church” and “oversinging”. Sing a Ne-Yo song or something.

    Tim….. get out of here.

Alex, work on your nerves! I think he has major potential. I like his voice, but his HAIR and his NERVES are so terrible!

Michelle, stand out more. Maybe rearrange a song? I want you in my top 10.

John, go younger and do an R&B song. I want you in my top 10.

That goes for Katie, too, she needs to be younger.

    Didi, bring back the guitar.

Haeley, I feel like you’re a good rearranger, so work on those vocals until you…. die of vocal overwork. Of course, not literally die >_>.

Lee…. don’t get too cocky about being liked by the “mean judge”, you were pitchy as hell. But yes, I think you’d be well suited to a Kings of Leon song.

    Lacey, nerves. Just sing.

Paige, I think you’re in danger already. You need to have a huge performance tonight.

Michael….. stop boring me and do some HIIT to lose some weight, Mr. Personal Trainer. Even though the sumo wrestler comment was kinda in jest, I’m inclined to agree with it. Wow, that’s the shallowest I’ve been on these critiques. Hmm…. I’d lose the guitar and sing something soft yet powerful.

Katelyn, straighten your hair >_>. I…. honestly don’t know what else to say. I thought she did well last week.

Generally, these people need to be more modern.

  39. Lee – Yellow Ledbetter by Pearl Jam
John – Everything by Michael Buble
Casey – Gravity by John Mayer (sultry version on Live album)
Todrick – Arms of a Woman by Amos Lee
Crystal – Hard Sun by Eddie Vedder
Lilly – Paparazzi by Lady Gaga
Didi – Use Somebody by Kings of Leon…Haley from Paramore’s version
Siobhan – The Calculation by Regina Spektor
Andrew – Believe by the Bravery
Tim – Banana Pancakes by Jack Johnson
Lacey – Waking up in Vegas by Katy Perry
That’s all I care to speculate on.

  40. The only saving grace this week, is that I doubt any of these people will do any Beatles songs, because last week was overkill. I think they need to remember something from last year, when one of the judges said, just because you like a song, doesn’t mean you can actually sing that song. They need to sing within their own limitations and don’t try to sing someone else’s song, just because you sound kind of like them. For those trying to sing rock, you are going to have to bring it, because there will be some comparisons to Daughtry, Cook, Adam and Allison. A rock song is not something you can do half way, and not get raked over the coals by the judges. All of these kids, breaking out the guitars, maybe some of them need to concentrate more on the vocals. Tonight has to be an improvement, because it couldn’t possibly get worse than last week’s debacle.

  41. Cuz I’m not creative enough to come up with my own, I’m just gonna point out the suggestions I agree with:

Alex lambert-Come on get Higher-Matt Nathanson
    Katie-A Thousand Miles –vanessa carleton
Crystal – Wonderful by Everclear Just indy enough, just mainstream enough, plus points for emo lyrics.
Didi – Something from Imogen Heap, either Hide and Seek or Goodnight and Go (OC Soundtrack)
Casey – Gravity by John Mayer (sultry version on Live album)

Would also like to echo these sentiments– I like both Lee and Lacey but they REALLY need to step it up and BE BETTER.

Lee – Ignore Kara. Rock up a pop song and don’t go off key. Try not to look constipated. Look surprised and humbled when they compare you to David Cook. You know they are gonna do it and so do we, but the Idol audiences likes surprised and humble even when it is totally insincere.

I hope Lacey really shows off her vocals tonight with something a bit more India.Arie Video ish… maybe sixpence there she goes — maybe even nelly furtado i’m like bird

  42. I wish that I had early onset Alzheimer’s, so I could forget Katie is a contestant.

You are making me nervous; I forgot Paige entirely and all I have in my notes is “no cavities.”

  43. Agree with bridgette12. This week can’t be worse than the last one. The first live appearance is an ice breaker for everyone and a lot of them under performed. I’m expecting much more this week… even from Tim Urban. I tought his ‘apologize’ wouldn’t have deserved him a ticket to Hollywood

  44. I would love to hear Crystal sing a Patty Griffin song….”Rain” is awesome. I don’t think anyone has sung that on AI. Maybe it’s not available.

Oh, that’s on my list too! Crystal would be great singing it straight since I don’t think the average Idol viewer will be familiar with it. Would LOVE to hear Casey singe her “Top of the Word” since most folks know the Dixie Chicks version. Kelly Clarkson and Susan Boyle have both recorded Patty songs, so I don’t think she’d turn Idol down. She’s no snob.

I also think one of the guys (or maybe a gal) should do Oasis’s “Wonderwall” (the Ryan Adams version, which is AWESOME) or JT’s “Cry Me a River” (the Glen Hansard version). Siobahn should do something edgy but recognizable like Bat For Lashes’ version of “I’m on Fire.”

  45. If it’s Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 (I’m not sure why they would repeat a theme though, it’s not like last year where most of them only get to perform only once), that’ll probably mean any song because few of the songs last week were Top 10 and a few weren’t even singles. Here are some suggestions assuming it’s a free for all –

Alex Lambert – Into The Ocean (Blue October) – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZES3nJQYJok
Crystal Bowersox – Autumn Leaves (Eva Cassidy) – Lose the harmonica and guitar and try something different.
Didi Benami – Cosmic Love (Florence and The Machine) – her style is getting boring fast, should make it just a touch harder. – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfBY96qxVRQ
Haeley Vaughn – Tangled Up In Blue (Bob Dylan) – I think many Bob Dylan’s songs will suit her quirky style, just need to adjust the lyrics a little. – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5622ozEHIm8
John Park – He’ll Have To Go (Jim Reeves) – going for the smooth baritone but somewhat schmaltzy route. – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnYfUTvLNBs
Michael Lynche – You Really Got A Hold On Me (The Miracles)
Michell Delamor – Without You (Nilsson) – her voice is meant for singing Diva-type songs.
Paige Miles – I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James)
It’s probably too obvious to choose a Kings of Leon for Lee Dewyze after the judges’ comment, but why not. He sounded good in Use Somebody.

  46. Haeley Vaughn — Tangled Up In Blue (Bob Dylan) – I think many Bob Dylan’s songs will suit her quirky style, just need to adjust the lyrics a little. –

OOh, I like the idea of Bob D for her! I think she might do well with some of his more comical-quirky pieces, like Buckets of Rain, Buckets of Tears, or something.

Like the Cosmic Love idea for Didi Benami, too.

Would be nice if the show could get some of these songs cleared for them! But why do I think that we’re probably doomed to hear most of the same old same old stuff that’s been cleared and sung over and over for years?

Casey is no Bo Bice. Bo = HAWT. Casey reminds me of Bucky as far as looks, I never cared for the Buck.

Tim Urban looks just as scared as Alex Lambert. Under no circumstances should he sing something with falsetto. Or a range of more than four notes.

Oh, I dunno about banning the false. Only because I now have a secret evil desire to hear Tim Urban cover this song with some wardrobe contributions from Tyler Grady.

  49. So nobody believes in R&B music on this board, everything is pop or country!!! Go Figure!!!

  50. Casey is no Bo Bice. Bo = HAWT. Casey reminds me of Bucky as far as looks, I never cared for the Buck.

Except I was talking about his voice, not his looks. His voice reminds me of Bo Bice in a way (the accent probably), so I was thinking he’d benefit from doing a southern rock type of song.

I don’t remember Bucky at all, to be honest. I didn’t really watch that season.

As for nobody on this board believing in R&B, they’re not really looking for an R&B singer. Which is quite unfortunate, I think it needs some form of revival. I don’t really remember the last time I heard a great R&B song on the radio: most hip hop/R&B stations now play that bland electropop or more electro-infused R&B. Which is also unfortunate. Of the people in the top 20, it doesn’t seem like there’s a good shot for an R&B singer. Seems like Michelle, Jermaine, Todrick, and John have R&B talent, but they don’t seem to be gaining a lot of attention…. maybe Todrick because he’s pretty cocky and arrogant and controversial (which makes me not want him in the top 12). I think one of them will slip into the top 10 (I would personally choose John and Michelle, they’re in my top 10).

  51. Bootstar…I really love the idea of someone singing an Oasis’ song…but, do you honestly think the Gallagher brothers would release it…I don’t see that happening at all! But, it would be awesome for someone to sing anything by them…they are a 90s favorite for me!!

“Agree with bridgette12. This week can’t be worse than the last one. The first live appearance is an ice breaker for everyone and a lot of them under performed. I’m expecting much more this week… even from Tim Urban. I tought his ‘apologize’ wouldn’t have deserved him a ticket to Hollywood”

Tim was bad and I hope that he will get his nerves under control, just like the rest of them need to. I think this bunch more than any of the previous Idols, really need some guidance in song choice and vocal coaching. I know there is a lot of pressure for these kids, especially after under performing, but they need to be careful of going for songs too big for them. This year fascinates me, because of the fact that they have so many that’s so bad.

  53. @Jammasta
Actually there is plenty of R&B that is not techno – the songs don’t have to be from the past 2-5 years when everything became “pop” inspired. There are great R&B songs from the past decade that would fit any voice…

Just like all these singers you guys have named are foreign to me, which would make the performance all that more special because I can’t base the vocals on the original, I am sure some R&B songs would do the same for all the people that are only familar with pop music. I can remember when Nicko Smith did a Sisqo song, and non of the judges even commended him for going outside the AI perverbial box…this show only acknowledges R&B when it is attached to MOTOWN – which is a shame.

  54. Siobahn should do something edgy but recognizable like Bat For Lashes’ version of “I’m on Fire.”

I’m impressed just by the fact that you mentioned Bat for Lashes, but this sounds rather orgasmic. I hope Siobhan trolls these comments for future weeks.

Indie Idol. Down with melisma. Huzzah!

  55. As for nobody on this board believing in R&B, they’re not really looking for an R&B singer. Which is quite unfortunate, I think it needs some form of revival. I don’t really remember the last time I heard a great R&B song on the radio:

I think that’s why they’re not looking for an R&B singer, isn’t it?

That certainly was the reason they gave for not being interested in Elliott, for example. And while that was more an objection to a white soul/R&B guy, I don’t get the impression that they’re interested in a black R&B person either — their view is that it doesn’t sell or get played these days, and so they wouldn’t know how to market the person, since they aren’t that interested in most niches (although they do seem to be getting *more* interested — at least in some things … I kind of think their newfound “indie” love is more for “actually pop but with a modest faux indie tinge,” however). … Anyway, don’t know whether that’s self-limiting or whether it’s just a fact.

  56. The GUYS will be performing tonight because one of the girls is sick.

  57. The GUYS will be performing tonight because of the girls is sick.

Oh, dear. I hope that doesn’t mean they’ll still be nervous because they were caught off guard. On the other hand, maybe being caught a bit off guard will mean they’re less nervous. Here’s hoping.

  58. I was coming here to post that, Malware…well, that the guys are performing tonight per the AI homepage. I didn’t know a girl was sick. Which one, I wonder? Hope whoever it is gets better soon.

  59. Oh no I am really nervous for the guys now, but it kind of makes sense to switch it around. Whoever is sick I hope she feels better soon.

  60. I like @IdolThoughts idea for Lacey Brown — Katy Perry’s Waking up in Vegas would be upbeat enough and great for her voice!

  61. Except I was talking about his voice, not his looks. His voice reminds me of Bo Bice in a way (the accent probably), so I was thinking he’d benefit from doing a southern rock type of song.

Same thing. Casey is meh on voice. He doesn’t even come close to the incredible and talented Bo Bice. BTW, no one can top C. Daughtry, D. Cook, or Bo Bice within the rock or southern rock genre, IMO. This season, the only one I see that may ‘succeed’ in the competition within the rock genre is Lee Dwyze.

  62. The person who is leaking info on Idf says that Lilly, Katelyn and Didi were sick last week and the producers didn’t report the show. It’s one of the seven remaining girl who is sick.

  63. There is always so much empahsis on song selection. IMO, if you are truly a good singer, it shouldn’t matter what song you choose. You should be able to sing ANYTHING, and sound great.

  64. If the person is too sick to perform, then maybe they will be too sick to sit in the audience…maybe we will find out that way…

  65. tweet from Sy Smith, one of the background singers.

Syberspace: Lawd, potential drama at Idle today. But the show must go on… #behindthescenes

  66. Syberspace: Lawd, potential drama at Idle today. But the show must go on… #behindthescenes

Hmmm, very interesting. Of course we all know how twitterverse is. Hee. Anyway, perhaps 1 or 2 of the guys are creating drama since they have to perform sooner than expected and my number one guess would be Jerrrrmainnne! Of course, this is pure speculation. LOL!

ETA: Oh yeah, Todrick from group night Hollywood just popped into my head too…

  67. LOL. I think the potential drama is just in general that it’s a last minute switch. And I bet they switched it for little Katie Stevens. (ha playing into the whole conspiracy thing) I’m excited about tonight now. (know that is evil)

Tim Urban needs to remember it’s a reality show first, singing competition second. Perez has shirtless pics of him and is flailing over him saying the gays and girls will vote for him. He only needs to find an easy song and do it well and he will make top 12.

  68. If Idol is willing to change the whole show schedule for the sick girl (which is unprecedented), I’m sure they’ll milk us for pity votes for her too. I think they’ll let us know who it is. If she’s really that sick, how is she going to be ready to go tomorrow?

I feel bad for the guys, especially since it seems like they might have learned a few hours ago that they have to go today. It’s going to be particularly rough for the ones who majorly struggled with nerves last week. Maybe Alex can perform from Kara’s lap.

I’m going to miss half the show tonight (also unprecedented, lol) and I’d rather miss the girls!

Finally, does Gavin DeGraw really only have one song? Every freakin’ year…

  69. cheese
“Finally, does Gavin DeGraw really only have one song? Every freakin’ year…”

I have listened to several of Gavin’s songs, but the Idols must only know one. I remember Adam and Kris said they had a list each week they could choose from, but had the right to sing something not on the list.

  70. I remember Adam and Kris said they had a list each week they could choose from, but had the right to sing something not on the list.

If it can get cleared, that is! And I think that it’s more likely to be older contestants with more fully formed musical identities and confidence that are liable to fight to get stuff cleared, frankly.

I could be way off base on this, but this strikes me as a young group generally, on average, especially the guys?, and definitely a rather *nervous* group. So I have a hard time seeing too many of them choosing to go outside the box very much when everybody knows that, if the song doesn’t clear, you’re going to have to choose again and start from square one ….

  71. Gangreene, those are some great ideas! I ESP. Think Miranda Lambert for Hayley is all kinds of awesome.

please no. that’s my favorite Miranda Lambert song.

  72. I have listened to several of Gavin’s songs, but the Idols must only know one. I remember Adam and Kris said they had a list each week they could choose from, but had the right to sing something not on the list.

Yeah, but they have to like you enough (*cough* Adam *cough*) to bother trying to get it cleared for you.

Crystal must be near death because there have been many very sick Idols in the past, who had to perform regardless. The show must go on after all.

Gallagher brothers probably wouldn’t clear “Wonderwall” for Idol, but maybe Noel would sign the contract just to stick it to Liam? ;-)

  73. BootStar
Gallagher brothers probably wouldn’t clear “Wonderwall” for Idol, but maybe Noel would sign the contract just to stick it to Liam?

No way the Gallagher brothers would let them sing that song on Idol. As for Crystal, I agree they should have simply let the girls sing tonight and people would have had the option of voting for Crystal or not. Why do this for her, when they have never done it for anyone else?

  74. I said that earlier; the Gallagher brothers are so out there and they hold their music to a different standard (meaning their music is too good for a silly karaoke show). I did find were some idol type show had a contestant sing “Wonderwall”. Don’t know the logistics to that but I just have a feeling it would never fly!! But, I would love to hear it on the show…

ETA: Ugh at Casey James singing “I Don’t Wanna Be”…hasn’t it been done to death on this show!!

  75. I don’t get it, Gavin DeGraw has about 50 other songs to choose from and 85% of them are fabulous. May I suggest one of those? lol.

  76. Anymore spoilers? LOL…Only 12 more mins till show time..Ok I will wait. Again Bo Bice was the one who did a fabulous job on “I Don’t Wanna Be”. I hope Casey can put his own spin on it.

  77. Lili definitely stands out in that picture with the red dress! She looks so pretty.
