American Idol makes its big return to television on Sunday March 11 on ABC. Ahead of the premiere, check out judges Katy Perry and Luke Bryan making talk show rounds on Tuesday (March 6).
On Jimmy Kimmel Live, Katy Perry talked about the pranks she and Luke play on fellow judge Lionel Richie. Also, she explains why hopefuls covering the judges songs is a bad idea. “We don’t need our bum bums to be kissed on the show,” Kelly says frankly. “We’re really looking for authentic, credible, instant identity talent.”
Initially, Katy was wary of social media–there are so many ways to be found these days. But now, she feels, those platforms are crowded, making it difficult for young talent to stand out. “I think American Idol has come full circle to be a great benefit to up can coming stars,” she says. Katy insists the show has found some incredible talent.
On Live with Kelly and Ryan, Luke Bryan sat with American Idol host Ryan Seacrest and Kelly Ripa to chat everything Idol. Interestingly, Luke and season 11 winner Phillip Phillips hail from the same small Georgia town, and have talked many times. Last summer during the CMT Awards, Luke and Phillip went out to dinner.
As far as American Idol is concerned, Luke says the show is about the backstories. “What’s amazing is to watch [the contestants] struggle before they get to Idol.” He admits that the singers can do one little thing to change their minds. Some singers come so close to getting cut, and they don’t even know it. On a lighter note, Luke spills deets on Katy Perry’s hidden snack bar, and his sneaky thermos full of beer.

Bonus clip: Luke chats American Idol on Good Morning America. The judges and an American Idol camera crew crashed a wedding in Savannah. Luke says being a judge–picking people apart–is a little out of his comfort zone. But he’s learned to say no. The young talent have inspired him to work harder. There’s also a short clip of Luke “grilling” a hopeful.
