    Proud father, ‘Idol’ son
Univision anchor bowled over by appearance on show

…Three hours before his 10 p.m. stint anchoring the newscast on the Univision network, Cardenas stood speechless as his 28-year-old son kicked off the voting portion of the sixth season of American Idol. He couldn’t be more pleased.

“It’s incredible,” Cardenas said. “I’ve seen him perform so many times. I do think he did very well. He is very strict on himself. I could read his face, and I could tell . . . he feels very good with his performance tonight.”

Had he ever watched the show before his son was on it? “Never,” he whispered…

“Idol” producers to run ailing Emmy Awards

The executive producers of Fox’s megahit “American Idol” will work their magic on the Emmy Awards, whose ratings hit their second-lowest level in 16 years last year.

Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick have been named executive producers of the 59th annual Emmycast, airing September 16 on Fox. The show will air live from 8-11 p.m. (with a tape-delay in the Pacific time zone) from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Last year’s event, which aired on NBC, drew 16.2 million viewers, down about 13 percent from the previous year. The previous low was 13.8 million in 2004; before that, it was 12.3 million in 1990, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Lythgoe liked the Emmys to an “American Idol” finale….

‘Idol’ crop isn’t ripe for picking

Maybe their nerves got to them. Really got to them.

Either that, or this season’s male crop of American Idol hopefuls are all stunningly mediocre and boring. Not a good combo.

Where’s this year’s Daughtry type? Ace? Ruben? We’d even take a Constantine, people. Instead, Tuesday night’s performances featured a bunch of boys vying mightily for last place.

But there have to be front-runners, right? A couple with potential:

Rock-solid former Idol proves he’s no passing fancy

POP REVIEW: Daughtry delivers a polished performance

…The sold-out status (about 225 fans), enthusiastic reception and overall positive vibe may well reinforce another bit of folk wisdom: that it is better to do well and not win (as Mr. Daughtry did last season, coming in fourth in what was widely acknowledged as something of a shocker) than to capture the AI crown with its contractual obligations.

Surprisingly, the show skewed toward the mid-30s. While some might denigrate the somewhat questionable vehicle that propelled him into the popular eye, there’s no denying the phenomenal sales of his self-titled debut or the fist-pumping cheers that greeted almost every song…

RYAN AND SIMON IN ‘IDOL’ BLOWUP

THE first night of real com petition on “American Idol” was interrupted last night by a taunting confrontation between host Ryan Seacrest and judge Simon Cowell.

“I think you two need to talk after class,” judge Randy Jackson said, trying to defuse the tense situation that began when Cowell off-handedly addressed Seacrest as “sweetheart.”

“Don’t call me ‘sweetheart,’ ” Seacrest snarled. “I don’t want that kind of relationship.”

The pair’s efforts to provoke one another has always been part of the chemistry of the hit Fox show. But last night’s exchange seemed unusually nasty – and Cowell looked genuinely angry afterward.

“You’ve made this very uncomfortable, Ryan,” Cowell said.

“We’ll handle this another time,” Seacrest replied.

    AFTER ‘AMERICAN IDOL’

2002: Kelly Clarkson became an instant American celebrity when she beat Justin Guarini in the first season of the show, which started as a summer replacement series. Clarkson’s second album, “Breakaway,” sold more than 11 million copies worldwide and is one of only four albums in history to remain the top 20 for a year. She has won four American Music Awards and two Grammys.

Think our local ”Idol” will made the cut?

Last night, Chris Richardson of Chesapeake finally got significant screen time on “American Idol,” performing Gavin De Graw’s “I Don’t Want To Be,” among 11 other guys.

Although he wasn’t a vocal knockout, he brought charisma to an otherwise ho-hum competition and judges said he “started the show” and called it “a lot of fun.” Wearing a Justin Timberlake-like ensemble of jeans, a blazer and a tie, the former kitchen manager of a Chesapeake Hooters delivered a fine performance, but we won’t learn his fate until Thursday…..

American Idol: Boys almost all bad

So. Two hours with many mediocre singers and Ryan Seacrest in an almost tweed vest with no watch fob. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t want to say it was all bad, but it almost was.

Before I get started, can I send out a plea to TPTB and Ryan Seacrest to please mention the song titles before each song. Tuesdayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s episode of American Idol continued this seasonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s penchant for the craptacular. Most contestants turned in performances that were far from Idol-worthy. Only beatboxer Blake Lewis, who had a great song choice and oozed style, and Justin Timberlake clone Chris Richardson, impressed the judges with any semblance of charisma.

Meanwhile several Idols royally stunk up the stage, with Sundance Head coming out of nowhere to screw the pooch with his painful wretched rendition of The Moody Bluesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Nights in White Satin.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ …..

Semifinals #1: The official (short) summary

After a month of often-tedious preliminaries, American Idol started for real Tuesday, with the 12 male semifinalists competing for a spot in the finals.

Many played it too safe, choosing songs by Michael Jackson, George Michael and Richard Marx. Others plundered the classic-rock songbook (Free Ride, Nights in White Satin).

Blake Lewis and Chris Sligh stood out by doing neither, impressing by choosing Keane and Mute Math songs.

But Sundance Head played to his weaknesses with a frayed Satin, and Paul Kimà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Careless Whisper was OK on the whisper but careless on the vocal gymnastics

Denise Neil’s ‘Idol Thoughts’ No. 1: Our boy Phil’s not bad

Welcome to the first installment of “Idol Thoughts.” We’re launching this “American Idol” recap thingy for several reasons — the main one being that former Northwest High student Phil Stacey is one of the final 24 contestants. Also, given that a good chunk of the population is watching “American Idol,” we thought it might be fun for Wichita to follow along together this season.

Finally, and most important, I love television recap thingies on the Internet (my favorites are at Entertainment Weekly’s Web site, ew.com) and I’ve always wanted to try to write one.

    Another Mute Math problem …

I was also out of the Mute Math loop … can anyone tell me if that song just sounded like a Nirvana-laced arrangement, or if there was an actual Nirvana sample in there somewhere? Welcome back, Lisa. :)

OK, LOVED the beat box guy (I need to learn his name) and Chris Sligh last night. These are the only two that stand out for me at this point of the show. Will be interesting to see how they do.

Bummer that Sanjaya wasn’t better. He reminds me now — eerily — of Michael Jackson.

And what is with the kid from VA that keeps singing Elliott’s songs? Does lightening strike twice? Doesn’t hold a candle to Mr. Yamin, heh. A completely biased opinion. When I harumphed during the show, my son said something along the lines of: Mom, its a compliment to Elliott — imitation is a form of flattery. I raised that kid well. :)

    ‘Idol’ semifinalist puts family first

On Monday night, Daughtry had the sort of audience that most newcomers would kill for. Less talky than the typical Gypsy Tea Room crowd, the packed-in fans were attentive and took direction well. When he jumped off the stage to touch (not shake) a few hands, the women up front went crazy. And when he launched into the set-closing Home with “Y’all got any lighters or cellphones? American Idol starts off weird, pitchy, and boring

Well the top 24 on American Idol have started out as they usually do – safe and boring. Why must nearly all of the contestants pick safe and boring songs for their first week? Ah well, it’s a trend we will have to live with. Nerves seemed to get the better of the guys as well, as many of them were also pitchy and “weird.” Let’s hope they all improve next week, because this week was just a huge disappointment…

‘Idol’ hopeful says hear me, don’t just see me

OVER THE PAST two weeks, fans of “American Idol” have learned three things about Saratoga resident Paul Kim. Aside from his voice, which impressed the judges, these tidbits have emerged: the nickname “pool boy,” his plan to perform barefoot and his lucky underwear.

Tuesday night viewers got to see him — and 11 other men — sing during the “Idol” broadcast (the 12 women are up at 8 tonight; results for both are at 8 p.m. Thursday on Channels 2 and 40). Kim spoke by phone days after he officially became a top 24 semifinalist….

Which Of The American Idol Top Twelve Girls Will Shine?

After a somewhat disappointing first performance show by the American Idol Top Twelve boys, will the American Idol Top Twelve girls fare any better? It will likely be difficult for them to do any worse. Which of the American Idol girls will shine in their first performance as part of the American Idol semi-finals?……

Watching last night’s performances made me appreciate all the guys from Season 5 that much more: Taylor, Elliott, Chris, Ace, and even Bucky.

Even the questionable “stand out” performances from last night were not that good. I remember the first week being totally WOWED by Elliott’s voice. I remember the fun and charisma of Taylor’s performance. I remember thinking Chris has an amazing recording voice after he sang “Wanted Dead or Alive”. I remember Ace’s falsetto in “Father Figure”. I remember Bucky’s growly voice and Jessica Simpson’s main.

I know that Simon must be missing last season.

  • daisy

Did anyone like last night’s show? completely underwhelmed and disappointed. great snark potential with Suckdance. Chris S on thin ground right now, performance okay.and he will get by on his banter with Simon for a while. The strange comments between Ryan and simon were completely stupid, fight back stage already. This is only going to get worse, and I will likely mute the tv for the judging. Song choices mostly so so last night, did enjoy the Elliott Tribute as someone had previously mentioned. I so wanted to like someone. please girls pull throu!.

  • http://www.myspace.com/mignonette33 purplesmile

I know that Simon must be missing last season.

I know I am missing last season. LOL

I know we’re supposed to move on and all that, but these new guys really have to step up their game. I am still hopeful, though. The competition is still young. And there are the girls…:-)

  • pah

Squishy, I can’t agree more. Last night was sooo lackluster. If I had to pick one, it would be Blake. He actually sounded good. Chris S, was alright, but the others were boring as hell. Phil just creeps me out.
It just makes me crave for last year. Sorry, but I’can’t let last year go. Especially after last night.

Good Luck to Taylor on the first night of his national tour. Knock ‘em Dead, Taylor.

The girls need to BRING it home tonight or this season is going to really suck.

Good luck, Taylor! Have fun Metta and Baxter. (Is anyone else going tonight? – Kat?)

    Less-exposed à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ singers have to grab audience fast

With the final 24 contestants in place, American Idol isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t giving the South as much love as it has before.

Only seven people made it from the South, if you count Texas, compared with 13 last year and 11 in 2004.

Nobody from Birmingham à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ home to Taylor Hicks, Ruben Studdard and Bo Bice à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ made the cut.

But, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the best year ever for the West Coast. Six semifinalists hail from California, and although the Idol judges pilloried Seattle, three singers from that area landed in the final 24….

American Idol Alum Jennifer Hudson Headlines Church Gig

Dreamgirls star Jennifer Hudson has shunned pre-Oscar parties – opting instead for an evening at her family’s church to prepare for Sunday night’s (25Feb07) Academy Awards.
The nominated actress headlined gospel concert “An Evening Of Praise With Jennifer Hudson” on Monday night (19Feb07), entertaining over 3,000 revellers at the Progressive Baptist Church in Chicago.

Hudson says, “I don’t do clubs. I don’t drink. I don’t smoke. I’m not having no club party – I better have a praise party.”

Audience member Brenda Morgan adds, “It’s an exciting time because the city is so rich in the gospel tradition. It’s a great night. We’re so proud of Ms Hudson.” (c) WENN

    Showbiz News

    Idol Lopez

Jennifer Lopez is reportedly set to perform on ‘American Idol’.

The singer-and-actress, whose next album Como Ama Una Mujer’ comes out at the end of March, is set to appear on the popular talent show on April 11, according to US TV show Access Hollywood.

J.Lo will follow in the footsteps of Prince, Mary J. Blige and Shakira, who have all taken to the ‘American Idol’ stage.

The next phase of the competition sees the final 24 contestants – 12 men and 12 women – battle it out for a place in the final 12.

However, one pop superstar who is not going to appear is Michael Jackson.

Michael’s spokesman Raymone Bain told Access Hollywood: “There is absolutely no truth to the rumour that Michael is going to appear on ‘American Idol’. He has signed no agreements with anyone.”

‘American Idol’ is hosted by Ryan Seacrest and judged by Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.

Sundance can not possibly be in first place at dialidol but it looks like he is. I hated his performance last night…”I love hugh”.Who is “hugh”? Oh, he meant I love “you” not hugh. Blake looked the best to me, but still did not look like a winner. Maybe they were all too nervous.

  • JJ

If Metta sees Taylor at the hotel, would she be getting even more a$$-kicking from you? LOL

Not if she listens to me. I told her she has to tell him I entire internet doing a drinking game, in his honor. You know, I told her to lie.

I think there is something messed up with dial idol. If you look at the results, it has Suckdance ahead, but if you look at the geographical results, it has Suckdance losing, prettymuch everywhere. Now it could be that he got alot of votes from big states. Sort of like a presidential election.

Suckdance, Sanjaya and Chris Richardson are 1,2 and 3 according to dial idol. Bottom three are Jared, Paul and Nick.

Morning guys… Just dropping by to say Hi… :)

My schedule has been crazy, so I was hoping to get some entertainment by watching the top 24 guys today. Just finished watching and… Man, nobody was good! I wasn’t blown away like I was with Elliott’s If You Really Love Me last year. Taylor moved me and made me love “Levon”, Chris and Ace was good. I even enjoyed Chicken Little.

This year they picked safe songs, sang off-key, and nobody stood out. All of the guys who sang songs Elliott’s sung were pale in comparison. “Somewhere Only We Know” is my favorite Keane song and beatbox guy didn’t do well with it. I liked Brandon’s and Cotter’s tone of voice, though.

    Next week better please…

Bring on the girls! I can’t wait for Melinda, Lakisha, and especially Leslie. :)

    Anywaaay… Yay for Taylor’s start of tour and Elliott’s future rehearsals.com performances. I loved Tay’s rehearsals.com stuff.

  • t2

I’m a fan of Phil Stacy’s voice, but am I the only one who thought he looked like Yoda last night? Seriously, I expected his ears to flex up and down as he was singing.

I heard that Vote for the Worst was voting for Sundance. Don’t know if it could make that much difference, but, in the early stages without a clear favorite, maybe the other votes were so split that it did make a difference. Hopefully, dialidol is wrong…

  • Laurel

ROFL, Phil Stacey looking like Yoda. I thought Sundance looked like Shrek.

I really wish DialIdol is wrong. Nick Pedro was my fave last night, and he’s dead last on DI.

  • B

so i guess Fantasia is the big idol alum with news to break on idol? no doubt she’ll “break” the news that she’s going to be appearing on Broadway, even though that news has been out for a few days now.

  • Nostradamas

DialIdol is being corrupted by the VFTW people (who use their software) and is therefore not something to use for any glimpse into the future….it’s been rendered useless.

That being said…………..WOW, what a suck-fest that was.

I think the manipulation by TPTB to get a ‘certian kind’ of singer versus a GOOD singer is blowing up in their faces.

No rockers, no country, no nothing….just the same old bland tenor pop singers over and over…..none of these loosers are getting my $$.

Tami would have blown all of these wanna-be’s out of the water……and they knew it.

Dingo (I think?!?) said it best…….they’ve “Jumped the Shark”….

  • JJ

It bothers me that Phil Stacey missed the birth of his child to audition for American Idol. Sorry, there is nothing more important than the birth of your child. He also seems to be pretty cocky to me.

I like Chris Sligh’s humor, but the teletubbies comment was over the line. I think he really pissed Simon off with it.

    Dingo (I think?!?) said it bestà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Jumped the Sharkà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

I have to agree with this. I don’t know if I will get through the whole season. Yesterday was a yawner.

Metta and Bax, have the time of your lives tonight!! Whoooooo!! Tell Taylor ta call me dammit!!

Im a little depressed today. Its a strange feeling. Im not sure I can explain it at all. I have watched every season of Idol. I have never even missed an episode and I was so looking forward to last night and now? Im just kinda sad cause its clear as a bell now. Its over. Shit, Im even pining for Daughtry!

How odd. I remember last year at this time thinking Ace and Bucky (who I thought were the weakest links) were just average but after last nights disaster, those two were brilliant.

I have met dozens of great people though and for that Im grateful. I’ve had a ton of laughs and have bought and listened to some of the greatest music ever. Last season is over and I doubt I will be watching this season. Well, I will sporadically tune in but will be reading this blog and others like VFTW where there should be some razor snark lmao.

So, ahm a little depressed today but I’ll be fine.

Lisa, did I read in last nights thread that you were “going” somewhere? Cause if you or anyone else leaves my blog (Oh, sorry MJ. I get confused sometimes about who’s blog it is lolol) I will send a personalized bunny gram to you and it WONT BE IN THE FORM OF CHOCOLATE!!!

OK, ahm gonna get a cup of coffee and cry in it then onwards and upwards.

It is pretty sad when a show makes you long for the superior vocal stylings of Kevin Covais. :rolleyes_wp:

I will still probably watch this year’s inferior suckfest in hopes of one or two bright spots, but I have a feeling I will be doing other things while it is on as well. Because I don’t expect to be entertained too much.

  • Smiley

Well, I see everyone else seems to share my feelings about last night. So disappointed. I was really hoping that some performance would spark some enthusiasm for this season. But no, they all pretty much sucked. Even the ones that were OK were barely OK. And I typically like male singers more than female. Not much to get psyched for at this point.

  • ardnian

Just read this tidbit over at Gray’s:

Taylor and his tour team have requested that still cameras be allowed at all the venues. Audio and Video recording is specifically NOT allowed.

Don’t care about still pictures. No video or even audio?! What am I going to dooo?!!

I’m addicted to Taylor’s live performances mp3s… Need my Tay fix.

I am very interested to see how I will feel after watching the five hours (eek!) of Idol we will get on Friday night. (“Comatose” is a distinct possibility through sheer overload :wacko_tb:)

Because I have nothing like the affection for Season 5 that most people here seem to have. In the top 6 guys only 3 of them ever impressed me, and only one impressed me enough to care. Of the others Ace was nasal and whiney, Bucky was off-key and unintelligible and Kevin was just a joke.

Of the girls Lisa was bland, Melissa had no presence, Mandisa had nothing other than a high belt voice, Kellie was weak, Kat was hopelessly screechy in her upper register and Paris was inconsistent.

Taylor totally saved Season 5 for me. Without him I would not have stayed with it.

So Season 6 might well suck in my opinion but I doubt it will be noticeably much suckier for me than a lot of Season 5. :confused_wp:

The Watcher predicts Chris Sligh as the next Idol

Has the Watcher mentioned lately that I have correctly predicted the winner of each season of “American Idol” before the live shows even started?

I have not à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ because it would be a complete lie. I could get away with it, though, as there is no official record on that matter. Until now.

The winner of “American Idol” season six will be Chris Sligh. As Taylor Hicks showed last season, personality goes a long way.

There, I did it. Now it’s your turn…..

JJ, me too. Me too. Maybe some other time who knows.

Kirsten, the girls have no where ta go but UP. They have got to be better and not only that but the bar will be set pretty low now that the boys have pretty much blown it.

In season 1 I loved Clarkson. I loved her rough and powerful voice. In season 2 I loved Clay with his clear as a bell powerhouse of a voice. In season 3, I didnt like anyone all that much but was partial to LaToya London but really didnt care who won. In season 4 I loved Bo and his powerful and rocking voice. Season 5 brought me several incredible talents but it was Taylor’s voice that snagged me straight away. I think the show has peaked for me. As I said, I know of at least 2 people in my circle of family and friends who could blow any one of these guys out of the water with their voices. You will never convince me that this is the best America has to offer and Tami Gosnell should thank her lucky stars that for whatever reasons, she will not be in this years Idol. She’s way too good.

  • Masshole

Good morning everybody. Congratulations Metta and Bax on the concert. Do tell about it!!!!!!!!

So last night I eased onto the couch, adjusted the just-started-to-exercise heating pad, piled magazines beside me for 10 minute commercial breaks, and optimistically anticipated a night of entertainment.

Entertainment? Well, no. Was it me, I wondered, or did all of these guys get selected because they pretty much had the same voice? Different bodies, same voice. To read about Helen Mirren or Iraq or to watch as the final twelve nervously and safely plowed through their first night on the little screen? As the first long half hour dragged on, with only Simon’s very right on criticisms to buoy me, I whipped through half of Newsweek and wished I had The Economist.

I felt sorry for the contestants, because their terror was palpable – and audible. Some voices were pretty good, but unfortunately the same as the last voice – or so it seemed. I know, Simon wants a twelve person boy band, I thought, like Il Divo only more so. Eye candy without substance.

Long about 8:45 I was checking the clock. Oh my god, this is going for TWO HOURS, I whined, as I picked up my second magazine. They want us to listen to this and commercials too? To quote Dings, “That ain’t right.”

Nuf’s enuf I said as the clock struck nine. I whipped over to Rosannes ex-hubby playing a horny evangelical homophobic preacher, who, of course was gettin his same sex jollies; a weakness that precipitated his wife’s demise as his congregation rioted. Pretty predictable, but not as predictable as what Fox had to present.’Sides the actors could act.

The magazines were laid to rest, as was Idol. RIP, because it looks to be a dead season.

And are they doing final night during Grey’s Anatomy, as Meredith is perilously close to death? By, by Idol.

Idol didn’t just die, it committed suicide.

Mass, that was one fucking great post and I couldnt agree more and if idol, in ANY way, puts itself up against Grey’s Anatomy, its not even negotiable for me. GA will win by a country mile.

Its the principle for me. How dare they give me this shit when I know there are some extraordinarily talented people out there who would have made for some awesome entertainment this year.

  • cochem

I think that AI took 1 giant step forward last year with all of the idols having success…Now it looks like they took at least 2 steps backwards after last nites show…we’ll see what the girls can do tonite…

  • jpfan

Constantine was on NY tv commenting on last night’s suckfest. He seemed intelligent, charismatic and charming next to the clips of last night’s singers. That’s how lame they all are. If the girls aren’t really good, it will be very hard to even watch the show casually which is how I usually do it. Dingo, I share your feelings of sadness. Hopefully, Taylor and Chris D will be back to perform on the show. Maybe E in the audience. The Simon/Ryan gay crap is getting old as well.

  • JJ

Well everyone, I’m off. The girls and I are getting our nails done. My 8 year old wants her nails painted black and silver. She’s goth at 8, how cute is that.

Okay..honestly, I only turned on my tv to watch AI so I could keep up with the chatroom last night. You guys owe me one…LOL

It’s not good when you’re watching an entertainment show and wodering why it’s runny so long. Only to realize it’s only been on for two hours and you’ve been watching it for less than an hour and a half.

After watching AI off and on for since Season One, I will say that the first week of top 24 usually starts off at bit slow. because a lot of the past season Idols performance is still somewhat fresh in the fan’s minds and the various chatboard usually reflect that. The problem with last night’s performers was, no one really stood out and made anyone say, “YEAH.”. They were all pretty standard vocals. With maybe a surprise here or there. But no “shocker” or THATS my guy..

I’m going to chalk last nights performance up to first week jitters. These guys are all getting equal tv time for the first time. So, lets hope that’s the problem. If not, we in for a long season. Unless the women can do their thing and keep our attention.

Dancing With The Stars is beginning to look mighty good right at this point.

  • emeralgem

    Good morning ALL..
Sorry I’m just getting around to posting about my adventure last weekend, but I’m somewhat laid up and still FEELING the pain…

We arrived at MICHAULS CAJUN RESTAURANT on St. Charles Avenue around noon on Saturday. For a hefty price the restaurant provided ALL the food, drinks, and a grandstand viewing area for the three parades scheduled for Saturday.. Iris, Tucks and Endymion.

Our plans, however were to watch two of the parades and then head over to The Superdome approximately 8 blocks away after Taylor’s float passed our viewing stand… We knew we had plenty of time to change clothes, walk the distance and still arrive at THE DOME before Taylor since he would be stopping at Gallier Hall for a short period of time to share some BUBLY with The Mayor and the other distinguished guest at the REVIEWING STAND.
Well, needless to say, things did NOT quite work out as we had planned..After the TUCKS parade, as I came down the steps from the grandstand, I missed a step and fell for what seemed like an eternity, in SLOW motion..The landing part was NOT GOOD..

This occured just about the time that Endymion was starting to ROLL..The Endymion parade started at 4:30 and reached our area at around 6:30 pm…
And, if any of you are familiar with Greek Mythology, Endymion was a remarkably handsome mortal man.. How fitting for our Mr. Hicks to be the Grand Marshal of ENDYMION. Taylor looked absolutely GORGEOUS.
Taylor was throwing beads when he reached our area, and seemed to be having the time of his life standing up there on that float.. Unfortunately, there was NOT a halt in the parade so the float he was riding did NOT stop in front of our grandstand and I did NOT succeed in making eye contact with him. I did NOT catch any of the beads he was throwing either..Total BUMMER…
As I stated before, our plans were to walk over to the Superdome after Taylor’s float passed by us, but I was having difficulty walking, and it had also turned quite cold. The wind had picked up and was extremely strong, which made it even more difficult to walk considering there was so much debris in the streets… So we had to make different plans..
We decided to stay at MICHAULS until Endymion had passed and then head over to the garage, get the car, and drive to the Superdome.. The entire parade FINALLY passed our area around 9:50.
Traffic was HECTIC and it took us much longer than we originally predicted to get to the Superdome..
When we finally arrived, and I managed to HOBBLE inside, Al Green was on stage performing..At this time all I wanted was to see Taylor and LiMBO and leave..

Thank goodness, and everything HOLY, Taylor and LiMBO came on to perform after Al Green.. Our Mr. Hicks was GREAT and the crowd seemed to love him…He opened with The Breeze, singing he may go down to New Orleans and Mardi Gras..Taylor and LiMBO also performed Gonna Move, Soul Thing, Hell Of A Day… They did NOT perform JTFTW..
I had hoped they would play more songs off the CD but they didn’t..I was also hoping that their GIG would have been longer..

Also, Journey and STYX were playing music on their floats while they were riding in the parade, and I wondered why LiMBO was NOT on the float playing music with Taylor..

BTW…… A very nice gentleman did give me an Endymion cup that he caught from Taylor in the Superdome that has Taylor’s picture on it..

One last thing, Taylor is a BORN performer, and NEW ORLEANS LOVES him. TAYLOR HICKS HAS ARRIVED..

  • Ladybug

You know you are in trouble when the Simon/Ryan dustup is the high point of the evening.

I think I am going to root for Sanjaya. Just ’cause he is kinda cute and kinda creepy and kinda good and kinda bad and Simon etc. want him to go, NOW.

I will have a hard time getting behind (or in front of) Sundance just because he is, as someone said, Shrek (only not green, but that might happen eventually).

Chris Sligh is digging an early grave it seems, but I think all he wants is the exposure. I don’t think he has any illusions of winning.

I hope he has some more choice words for Simon before the AI PTB scramble around madly to find a reason to boot him off. Although, come to think of it, that little confrontation was probably good for TV, so maybe they will find a way to pimp Chris S. enough to keep him ON for some more “good television.”

My cynical flag is flying this morning.

Off to do things in the real world — not that mj’s is NOT the real world, y’know. :happy_tb:

Taylor and his tour team have requested that still cameras be allowed at all the venues. Audio and Video recording is specifically NOT allowed.

OK fine… but for the benefit ( or to quote Borat for make benefit ) of his huge contingent of fans who either :

    A) Want to remember his performance and/or
    B) Couldn’t buy a ticket or couldn’t make the concert due to other more pressing activities…

His CMT (TM) ought to at least consider RECORDING one concert into an album. That’s a huge promotion right there.

No rockers, no country, no nothingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.just the same old bland tenor pop singers over and overà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦..none of these loosers are getting my $$.

Nostradamas, I agree. Cue the theme from Jaws.

The PTB are playing it safe. Consequently we have various shades of “safe” predictable, boring, sameness.

I received Tami’s CD yesterday form CD Baby and played it in my car. It’s interesting music, I like some of the songs more than others and especially love “Abilene”. She reminds me of a female Neil Young. What a travesty that she did not got put through to the top 24.

I hope the girls are better than the boys.

I hope he has some more choice words for Simon before the AI PTB scramble around madly to find a reason to boot him off.

I agree that Chris Sligh went too far with his snide remark about Teletubbies….If you want to endear yourself to the audience, play the victim and the martyr. Better to gain their sympathy as an underdog than playing the wise-guy.

However, I kinda think that the onus would ALSO be on Simon to brush this remark aside the way he had in the past ( e.g., Ryan’s past remark — “Do you really live in the real world with Limousines here, fancy hotels there…”).

What an infantile reaction in front of the camera to fume the way he did.

He dishes out insults routinely and can’t take some poking when it comes to himself….

If Simon can’t brush this incident aside and move on, the show is going to suffer and people are going to be turned off.

Simon has hissy fits every season. He’s been known to storm off after X Factor and has refused to do the after show on more than one occasion.

    ****************************

It looks like this year they opted for sameness. Yah, you can’t tell me some extraordinary people didn’t get the boot. I think they would be better off if they didn’t do a fifty-fifty split between men and wimmin. Sort of let the best contestants thru, not the maybe best/maybe not of a particular gender.

Last season’s forte was that it offered variety. It seems pretty obvious there is not going to be a lot of that this year unless some females rock. And they may. Meanwhile, I think I’ll buy Tami’s cd. another one to put on the floor for obnoxious downstairs neighbor. Yeah. :smile2_ee:

  • Little Boy Blue

I mentioned the outstanding performances of the guys at this juncture of the contest last season. That last season was the best of the 5 goes without saying.

But how about past seasons ?

I can’t remember way back to Season 1 and 2…

But I remember in Season #3, almost all of the guys sucked as well….The main exception was George Huff, who took everyone to church with his outstanding rendition of LEAN ON ME ( prompting Simon to apologize for calling him a back-ground singer for the Temptations ). But George was the only memorable male performance at that early point in the game.

But Season #4 had a slew of great performances early on.

Bo Bice wowed us with DRIFT AWAY and became an early fav.

Mario Vasquez took away the curse of Stevie Wonder songs with his great version of DO-I-DO.

Anwar Robinson thrilled us with his extra-ordinary version of the classic MOON RIVER.

Constantine did KISS FROM A ROSE and wasn’t bad at all.

Nikko Smith showed us his range with PART TIME LOVER.

Even early casualty, Travis Tucker wasn’t bad with (again) Stevie Wonder’s MY CHERIE AMOUR.

Anyone of these Season #4 males could have shone last night.

I certainly hope the girls bring in their A game tonite because the guys disappointed BIG TIME ( as Dick Cheney would say ).

  • IGetCranked

After last night, there isn’t much to talk about excitement wise so I thought I would go the other direction and throw out a few people who I would have liked to have seen more of but got the boot early. My number one would be Judd Harris. He picked a baaaaaad song the first time but his Hollywood auditions peaked my interest. I also liked Sarah Mathers from that year. Last year I LOVED Gedeon’s voice! Too bad he didn’t try out this year instead of last year.

  • emeralgem

Am I correct in assuming that last nights performances were NOTHING to rave about?

  • thedingoateyobaby

I hope the girls are better than the boys.

OMG Mary! The bar has been set so low by the guys that its impossible for the girls to do any worse so what will happen? The first girl that comes out and sings a song all the way through and on key will get glorious praise. THATS how low the bar is from last nights disaster.

Never, in all my years watching, have I walked away from 24 nighs and not had at LEAST one favorite and usually several.

Tami was far too good for Idol and give the devil its due. I think TPTB understood that this year.

additionally….simon DID produce il divo and the teletubbies…any insult is inferred thru perception.

on the other hand, the esteemed mister cowell looked like a four year old calling a contestant fat as a retort.

lets talk about that part of the exchange.

too many people in this country let people in power get away with whatever they want to do and say….

LOL Mass, that will put him right over the edge.

I like Tami’s CD but like someone else mentioned, I dont like a lot of songs on the CD but the voice. OMG I love the voice. I have rewatched her Whipping Post audition. I was nothing short of amazed. She knocked my socks off. I can see the potential there and she wasnt even nervous or at least she hid it real well.

  • http://idolthoughts.blogs.syracuse.com/ foxydonna

Judging from the various blogs and news items this morning, it doesn’t seem like anyone was impressed by last night’s display of mediocrity. This is worrisome. I can understand when diehards like us find fault with the show. We expect more, but when the mainstream media also picks up on how bad it was, I think that should send a strong message to TPTB. I think they’ve over-manipulated this year, and the results are appalling. The girls had better be good because I am ready to start rippin’ and tearin’!

  • Masshole

I generally find Simon totally obnoxious, and gratuitously cruel to boot, but during the hour I viewed last night his criticism seemed (unusually) constructive, giving the contestants advice that would improve their game.

I agree. The one exception though was Sanjaya. I thought Simon went way over the top with him. It just seemed like Simon kept piling and piling on the poor kid. I was wanting to scream ENOUGH ALREADY!

But Donna, thats what is pissing me off. I feel manipulated so even IF the girls do well (and they will have to be not just good but incredibly good) I will always have this initial sour taste in my mouth about the show and the many they booted off who would have been far better than what they allowed to go through. I dont like being used and Im not sure I can shake this feeling regardless of what the girls do.

Its like, they really hated the outcome of last years show so they went overboard and really tried to manipulate thinking they had the key to success in the palms of their hands. I just cant help but feel that last years winner was such a disappointment to THEM, that they decided to take things into their own hands this year.

  • jpfan

I only watched part of the show but Simon seemed honest in his criticism. Chris S. should ease off the wise guy routine for awhile. It’ll get old fast. Sundance and Sanjara are in the top 3 according to DialIdol. I think the only ones who voted last night were the VFTW people. Imagine a final 2 of those two. LOL.

  • folk

i agree they over manipulated. they are looking for their boybander or princess pony.

which is what really pisses me off about simon and sligh. it is so OBVIOUS that simon is being negative about sligh to get rid of the odd one.

  • Stefunny

It looks like this year they opted for sameness.

In choosing to eliminate any quirkiness or different styles, they have given us 12 (at least in the guys) version of the same. Boring pop. Too bad they were scared of the diversity found in last season’s crop. Heck, I’d even welcome a country crooner.

That said, I very much appreciated that Blake and Chris were at least a bit current with their song choices. Sanjaya? Not so much. Who said that every single song in the Stevie Wonder catalog must be given another go-around? This applies to any of the old standbys that most of these people choose time and time again ad nauseum.

  • thedingoateyobaby

on the other hand, the esteemed mister cowell looked like a four year old calling a contestant fat as a retort.

Yep Folk, I agree completely on that point. That was really playground shit on Simon’s part. he is afterall, the successful businessman. On the whole, I agreed with Simon’s assessment of each and every contestant but not the delivery of the assessment.

I liked the interaction between Sligh and Simon. It’s about time someone fed him a taste of what he feeds others. Screw his egotistical butt. Sligh is crazy like a fox. He knows he doesn’t need to win this, and while he’s in it, he can be himself and react as most people would. That’s gonna make me like him more.

  • folk

what i find crazy foxy is simons dissing on slighs voice. no, he is not the BEST voice…but it is not bad. and we can all hear it records very well. so why the continual comments of….your voice stinks. really? does it stink more than the third of the song baldy man could not sing in tune AT ALL….oh right….baldy man has a STORY….gotta pimp his ass even if he sucks like a karoake champion in wichita.

I just went to watch Matt Buckstien’s Lost Idol performance on his myspace. I’m not a country music fan, and he sang the whole song instead of 1 minute and 30 seconds of it, but he was better than everyone who performed last night. At least he put some thought into his song choice and chose a song perfect for his voice. Take a lesson from him top 12 guys!

  • bean99

I have to laugh reading some of your comments about the guys this season. That’s exactly how I felt about Taylor last year. He was never better than mediocre for me. I also felt that during the season Kevin, Bucky, Melissa, Kellie, and even Ace weren’t the best singers although I came to like Bucky, Kellie, and Ace since. To me the only standout singers were Mandisa, Paris, Chris, Elliott (even though I’m still not really a fan of his singing style), and Kat when she’s at her best. My guess is that this season will be the same with some really good ones and some not so great. Even Kelly Clarkson didn’t really come into her own until later in the season.

  • Abilymom

    Hi, everyone!

As I said in chat, from last night the standouts for me were Chris S. and Blake.

    Observations:

Who the hell put Chris R.’s balls in a vice before he went out onstage?? I don’t remember him being that high-pitched before…

I kind of liked Sanjay or however you spell it. His tone was nice.

There is a ton of mediocrity with the men. There are a few that just blend together for me into one big lump of bleh. We’ll call the lump BrandonNickJaredRudyPaulA.J..

I haven’t had time to post much, but would someone mind summing up the past couple weeks regarding Taylor? No more radioplay, right?

  • radname

simon has always been constructive with his criticism, he just uses a lot of analogies, just when he’s picking on your favourite do you see it as mean, but when he does it to others he’s absolutely correct
oh p.s. “For Hezz, CarieB and anyone else who might care, lets wish a very happy birthday to William Petersen, 54 and still mega hot!!! ”
I AGREE, i have a huge crush on that man, and i’m glad he’s back with CSI, i hope he never leaves even though he wants to :(

folk: which is what really pisses me off about simon and sligh. it is so OBVIOUS that simon is being negative about sligh to get rid of the odd one.

What you saw as being negative, I saw as being fairly honest. Sligh was pretty Meh last night and it did seem like Karaoke night at the college bar to me.

Further, if precious Sligh felt the need to hit back after such a mild criticism, I hate to see what he’s going to do should any of the judges truly go to town on him.

Sligh was one of the ones I liked going into last night, but his performance just did not wow me. He was average. And on a carpy night like last night, average is not so great. IMO

‘Twas the night of my Idol
    And all through the house
    Excitement was building
As I sat on the couch.

    The remote in my hand
    And popcorn nearby
    Could it get any better
    Than the great Season Five!?!

    Twelve guys have performed
    They’ll be whittled to ten
    Will any stars shine
    From these sad little men?

    With voices sooo boring
    And songs oh so droll
    To make all things worse
    Sundance looks like a troll!

    Bald Phil was okay
    But here is my fear
    Can I ever accept
    Another penis with ears?

    The one with the hair
    The chubby Chris Sligh
    He’s my favorite so far
Will his wit get him by?

    Brandon will have it
    Made in the shade
    His look and his sound,
    Experience displayed.

    Blake has a gimmick
    The voters will like
    The Beatbox needs power
    His name should be Spike.

    Sanjaya is creepy
    His hair and his smile
    The tweeners will love him
He’ll be saved for a while.

    The rest of the guys
    Are as boring as hell
    No “It” to their “Factor”
    In the bottom they’ll dwell.

    Roast ‘em, toast ‘em
    They all should be done
    This group of big weinies,
    They just ain’t no fun!!!!!

    The judges are bored
    Surprise! So are we!
    Tingles for one —–
    No wait —- gotta pee.

    No Rocker, no Crooner,
    No man with the Soul,
    No Country, No Heartthrob
Kill me now with a pole!!!!

    I hope we will get
A Top Six if we’re lucky
    Who won’t make me scream

    GIMME BUCK-BUCK-BUCKEY!!!

    Fantasia returns to ‘American Idol’

Former “American Idol” winner Fantasia Barrino will sing on Thursday’s show, Fox announced Wednesday.

Barrino, who lives in Charlotte, won the third season of the Fox hit series.

Riding her television fame, Barrino has cut a number of successful recordings and in December released her album “Fantasia.” In 2005, her autobiography, “Life is Not a Fairy Tale,” was released and it was made into a Lifetime movie the following year.

Fox said Barrino would have a “special announcement” during her “American Idol” appearance, but gave no hint what it would be about.

they were all average kirsten. i mean the best guy of the night was blake…and watch that one again…he forgot his words at least three times…and went out of tune. and that was the best performance…

bean99: I have to laugh reading some of your comments about the guys this season. Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s exactly how I felt about Taylor last year.

I was thinking about that. Last year, a lot of people disliked Taylor and thought he was talentless, but you didn’t have too look too hard to find people who really, really thought he was great. So, you could understand how he could top DialIdol. Where are the Sundance fans hiding this year because I certainly haven’t found any praise for his performance last night. I bet even his Mom thought it was bad.

An ‘American Idol’ First – Jon Peter Lewis

With Chris Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson storming the music charts, another ‘American Idol’ finalist is savoring personal success. Jon Peter Lewis has become the first ‘Idol’ finalist coming off the show to independently produce and release a full-length debut album with all original songs. Called a “true entertainer” by MTV, an “American Idol favorite” by Billboard magazine, and
“brave” by Simon Cowell, industry insiders are not only impressed with Jon’s passion and determination to create his own label and maintain control of his first record, but with his music as well. JPL’s eagerly awaited debut album, Stories from Hollywood, follows on the heels of his critically acclaimed singles, “If I Go Away,” “It’s Christmas,” and “California Christmas.”……….

“My guess is that this season will be the same with some really good ones and some not so great.”

Forget about last season, those guys were 10X worse than the guys from Season 4. Last night was not a regular first night of idol, it was both boring and a train wreck. However, I admire the optimism of those who think those clowns will get better. I’m just praying there are 6 dynamite girls.

  • Kirsten

folk: they were all average kirsten.

I have to disagree with you there folk. It was a pretty below average night ;-)

Yep. On an average night, he would have been average. On a great night, he’d be nervously checking DialIdol all evening. But, last night was spectacularily craptacular, so he should be safe.

I think the vftw effect is bigger in these first couple of weeks. A lot of people haven’t decided to vote yet, but vftw is voting – for sundance. Last year, wasn’t top twelve guys the only week Taylor didn’t lead dial idol? Covais did – and he was the vftw pick at the time.

    The Fourth American Idol Judge?

After watching American Idol for five seasons, I think I should be sitting at the judges table with Paula, Simon, and Randy. Just kidding! But hereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s what I would have added to the judges’ comments last night if I was the fourth American Idol judge…..

  • ealbino

Does anyone know why Elliott’s MOVIN ON is NOT the single to radio?

as my first radio single “Wait For You” should start hitting radio very soon!

  • Lisa B

All right – Hereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the American Idol guys straight dope.

First, lets start out with a picture of Sanjaya Malakarà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s sister. There we go. Always nice to set a tone.

Ok, folks, this is the way it goes:

Last night you heard eleven losers. Maybe twelve. Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s no knock – thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just the way it goes. Only one person is walking away from this, and ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s going to be over the bodies of the 23 also-rans that make up this competition. And I think weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve all been down the path often enough to know what it takes to survive.

First and foremost, it takes a solid voice and the ability to summon it with regularity. Screwing that pooch early was Sundance Head, whose werewolf version of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Nights in White Satinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ was nothing short of fetid. The only way this guy progresses is if his momma has a phone bank installed in her kitchen. In my opinion, barefoot boy Paul Kim showed no chops in his tiptoe through George Michaelà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Careless Whisperà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and would be in danger this week if the judges hadnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t smothered his heiney with kisses……..

  • calisun81

Chris S. should ease off the wise guy routine for awhile. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll get old fast.

Agreed. Sligh was WAY out of line with his comments insulting Simon’s past work (non-idol related to boot). It doesn’t matter if you’ve watched the show for years, you don’t know these judges, Chris, and you can’t treat them like they’re your old pals. It just comes across as petty, forced, and definitely not funny. It almost seemed as if Chris had thought up that joke beforehand and was planning on saying it regardless of what Simon said, especially since Simon said he LIKED Chris. Idiot. He lost major points with me last night and he was one of my favorites.

  • bean99

I completely agree with you about Chris S., Kirsten. I wonder if he’s going to be so prickly every time he gets less than stellar praise because I didn’t think he was all that last night.

It wasn’t so much that Blake shot it out of the park for me but I discovered something I really liked about his voice. My husband said he reminded him of Sting. There’s something about him that I really like and it’s not the beatboxing. He stood out in my mind.

  • jpfan

Last night’s show helped Elliott, he is #12 on the Amazon Movers/Shakers list. While not a Taylor fan, I hate how he is being treated on AI. Couldn’t one judge have commented that not one guy last night had an ounce of his performing skills. The disrespect shown the guy who won last year is amazing. Simon mentioned Chris in his comments. But no mention of Taylor anywhere. I’m a Chris fan but that’s just wrong.

  • calimari

Assuming the girls can pull it off fairly well tonight, the sad thing is that it’s possible that 2 girls who are better than any of the guys will get bumped off because of their 6 & 6 rule. So 6 girls who might be worlds better than any of these guys will still be kicked off. I agree that Sligh doesn’t need to win this – he’s looking for exposure, he wants to eventually produce music, and this could be a good “in” for him. Aside from the fact that many were boring/pitchy/whatever, I find myself not liking the actual tone of several voices. I did like the tone of Pedro’s voice, altho the song & performance was not memorable.

  • LakesideUK

Okay I wasn’t going to but I just watched Chris S’ performance over at Rickey’s and I thought that vocal was fucking awesome. Fucking. Awesome. And yeah, I can hear the lisp now but it isn’t enough to detract from his tone which kills me, in a good way. Loved the song choice too – kudos to him for picking something current and unusual for Idol. Clearly I am going to be so far out of step with most people here it isn’t even funny. :huh_tb:

He may have shot himself in the foot with the backchat but to be honest I don’t think he can win this anyway. I think the demographic that will like him and his song choices (if that one was representative) will not be the heaviest of voting demographics. And lets face it: he aint gonna get the OMG HE IS HAWT!!!11ONE!!! vote from anywhere.

I’m just going to enjoy him for as long as he lasts.

  • ardnian

Yeah, Sligh’s performance was meh. I didn’t fink his joke about Il Divo/Telletubies funny. It was actually rather rude, imo.

Blake’s performance was pitchy and bland. It’s one of my fave songs so I need to listen to the original after that.

I have to laugh reading some of your comments about the guys this season. Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s exactly how I felt about Taylor last year. He was never better than mediocre for me.

It’s the soul, man. I didn’t love Taylor’s voice at first. I thought he got an interesting/unique tone of voice but I wasn’t blown away by his vocal/voice like I was with Elliott. I would call his singing as just OK. For me his qualities were his charisma, soul, and his ability to convey his feeling through his voice/singing. I could feel his “A Change is Gonna Come” and “The First Cut is The Deepest” or even “Levon”. It was later, that I realized he actually had a gorgeous gritty voice and I can’t get enough of it now.

I haven’t find those qualities in this year’s contestants. And Elliott is officially the best male vocalist out of AI ever.

  • Heh

Around this time in competition last year, Simon was eating crow for heckling Taylor during his audition. Looks like he’s about to eat crow again for making another asinine comment (that’s related to Taylor) during someone’s audition.

    Ah the memories.

For those interested: Dancing With the Stars announced their contestants on GMA this morning. They are:

    Ian Ziering
    Paulina Porizkoya
    Apollo Ohno
    Laila Ali
    Miss USA 2004 – didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get her name? – Shandy something
    Billy Ray Cyrus
    Vincent Pastore
    Joey Fatone
    Leeza Gibbons
Some basketball player whose name I missed – Lyle Drexler?
Heather Mills – Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not happy about this

The basketball player – if Drexler is indeed the right last name, it’s Clyde Drexler – I love that guy! (I love NBA though! Clyde’s nickname is Clyde the Glide ’cause he used to literally GLIDE to the basket!)

The other names – hmmmm. Ian Ziering – is he the blonde guy that was on Beverly Hills 90210?

Maybe Heather Mills won’t last. I think I’ve already picked Drexler before even watching. LOL!

  • Little Boy Blue

OK folks, it is a general consensus that the guys were mostly below par last night.

Here’s hoping the girls will redeem the show tonight. I’m looking forward to girls like Leslie Hunt to show us what she’s made of.

This isn’t the only season where the guys were barely tolerable. Season #3 ( Fantasia’s year ) had only 4 guys in the top 12 ( there was no 6/6 rule then ).

Only George Huff gave us something to rave about.

But remember — this was also the season that gave us 4 great female singers :

    Fantasia — goes without saying.
Diana Degarmo — now a star in Broadway.
Latoya London — still one of the greatest vocalists ever in the show’s history ( arguably better than Fantasia ).
Jennifer Hudson — now a GOLDEN GLOBE winner, and soon to be OSCAR winner.

    There’s still hope folks.

  • Masshole

    Emeralgem…..

Congratulations on what seems to be a rocking good time, barring your injury. Hope you heal soon.

(And that Taylor gets to putting out an “in concert” album. I really think it would be great.)

“But no mention of Taylor anywhere. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m a Chris fan but thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just wrong.”

JP FAN – I was a bit irritated that at the start of the show Ryan mentioned Chris at #1, Kat at #2, and no mention of Taylor, that his CD went platinum, or that he even existed. I’m not expecting a lot of Taylorgushing from Idol, but since this is sort of the kickoff of the “real” competition, and the first time a lot of people bother to tune it, it would have been nice to let them know Taylor even has a CD out since it’s obvious a lot of people don’t know. Also, Taylor had to fulfill a zillion obligations to Idol, it seems like they can at least acknowledge that he did win & not pretend he doesn’t exist. Just courtesy. Sligh mentioning “DIMYP” was the closest thing to a Taylor comment.

  • calisun81

and againà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.you are all about slighs comment to simon and not simons retort of you are fatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

    wow. two way street people.

it is a gameà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦and you are played.

If the words, “You are fat” came out of Simon’s mouth, it’d be a different story. In any case, I think the reason people are focusing on Chris’ comment is that he instigated that Teletubby comment by even bringing up the Teletubbies out of nowhere and I’m sure a lot of people think he had it coming.

Simon is a judge on a talent show who we’ve known for years. He critiques performances, performers, etc. That’s his job. Chris Sligh is a nobody who is supposed to be trying to impress the judges and America. He just didn’t do it last night, with the voice or the snotty comments.

  • Masshole

Ardnian my love, that is because he plans on selling a concert DVD.

    Ah, I didn’t know that. :)

But, still, I thought he was going to put up recordings of his live performances online… Like at bt.etree.org or even at GC’s. Yeah, he should do that. He has to!

  • Lu

I remember last year talking about the guy performances that I liked and I had a list. This year, I’m just trying to find one that stands out – no luck. Wonder if Chris R will sing Moody’s Mood next week? Go ahead and try it.

  • Kirsten

folk: and againà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.you are all about slighs comment to simon and not simons retort of you are fatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

Simon is always an a$$. I would comment on it, but it’s like saying the sky is blue or that water runs down hill.

Sligh is new so he’s behaviour is worth commenting on.

Simon has always been exceptionally rude to fat people. Are teletubbies actually fat? I thought they were just spacey.

  • thedingoateyobaby

The comment by Simon back to Sligh re he looks like a Teletubby or words to that affect will hit a little too close to home for a lot of us “teletubby” looking people.

Not that I would KNOW lmfao.

No, Sligh probably should not have said anything but Simon came off looking worse IMO.

I like Simon a lot and usually think he is right on the money but he really stooped low last night.

On the other hand, its all anyone is talking about. It will be interesting to see what the ratings for tonight and Thursday are.

  • MaryS-NJ

Sligh is crazy like a fox.

I’m coming around to that point of view. I think Sligh will turn off some of the potential voters at home if he does that too often – assuming, of course, that he really wants to have a shot at winning. But, Simon looks petty too by not being able to take what he dishes and being so obvious in his criticisms of the not-pretty guys.

As for Teletubbies… I used to think that only a really cynical mind could conceive something so twisted as entertainment for children. It’s like a weird drug trip or something with that evil babyface sun.

  • MN Sue

Considering all the guys were boring me to tears last night, gimme the insults, the bikering, the one liners, and the rude comments. Don’t care who gives ‘em or who gets ‘em. Until the performances improve, the shit-dishing will keep me interested.

  • Abilymom

Abilymom: Um, OK, even Kenneth the troll gets someone to answer his questions.

    Sorry.

Taylor’s tour is starting tonight. He’s on Dr. Phil on March 1st. He’s been doing bits on some of the infotainment shows. I don’t know what his album is at this week, but his single is 27 on the Mediabase airplay charts.

    Come back!!!!

  • pj

Sligh’s comment seemed contrived. That’s what bugs me… not the comment itself. Simon wasn’t even that critical of him. The best thing about his pefromance was his song choice. The vocals and performance were just okay for me.

  • rher

This is the whoa moment that I had hoped for yesterday. :frown_tb:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVmw3SqtV4M&mode=related&search=

The season started off bad with all those wasted audition hours and continued yesterday. I don’t have much hope for tonight.

  • bean99

I don’t think that Simon is picking on the not so cute guys because he didn’t exactly rave about the ones who were. Simon wasn’t even being rude for a change with what he said about Chris S’s singing but Chris was rude back at him. Yes, Simon shouldn’t have said the teletubbies comment but he was doing his job critiquing the singers which they’d better get used to.

  • ardnian

Simon was really offended. If this was the first season, people would curse on him for being rude and acting like a kid. But, it’s been 5 years and people’re just used to it. He’s actually a lot tamer now.

  • Little Boy Blue

but would someone mind summing up the past couple weeks regarding Taylor? No more radioplay, right?

This info is for the Soul Patrol :

Believe we have a new station…just on Yes

WAPE 95.1 JACKSONVILLE, FLA ( it is a monitored Top AC station ).

His latest Mediabase numbers are as follows :

    SEE HERE : http://www.mmr247.com/mmrweb/Reports/Reg/EMD.asp?SOngID=1489007&NumDays=7

148 Spins Yesterday. ALL AC stations nationwide. 510,000 audience impressions.

This compares to 126 spins last week. 121 on AC Stations, 3 on Hot Ac and 2 on POP with an audience impression of 479,000

In Sum, Taylor Hicks is MAINLY being accepted on Adult Contemporary radio Stations and is being snubbed by the POP, Top 40 stations. His spin numbers are increasing and he is moving up the AC airplay charts, but I don’t see any evidence of it causing any significant bump in record sales.

For that matter, what are Taylor’s record sales for last week ? I don’t have the info off hand.

Morning –an of the wall observation and conclusion: After sencinf last night AI guys overall preformance was not let us say great and to some the results posted on dailidol which might make the people in charge of votingsystem in fl wipe thier brows like they are off the hook.I may be wrong on thses stats not perfect

1st. The overall performance of the guys was not the greatest
2nd. MASH the final episode was one of the highest watched in tv.(A few superbowls were higher)

3rd. The Gray anatomy after the superbowl has an estitmate 38.1 viewers.(the bomb one)

The analytical but not scientifical conclusion from this is the fallowing::

Alan Alda and Doctor Mcdreamy should have been contestants on the show last night….My vote Dr. Mcdreamy but Alan sems like a nice guy…….Another lame atemp at homor by gizmo

    ‘k, thanks folk.

I guess I’ll try to monitor it on my own since it’s a frowned upon topic here.

Is it true that this week’s shows were taped over the weekend? If so, maybe TPTB did not want any spoilers, even hints of what was going to be seen to leak out because it was so sucky.

  • folk

not frowned upon so much abily….just ten pages worth of it seems a bit silly….

Loved the poem, MN Sue. Of course, I would be partial to any doggeral that ended with the line Buck-Buck-Bucky!

Just adding my thoughts to the general consensus. As an idol watcher since Season 1, last nights crop was B-0-R-I-N-G. A lot of bad song choices and meh performances. I agree totally with MJ’s astute assessment with last nights performances. I loved Blake but that may be because I was so pumped to see someone do a Keane song.

I gave my 10 “Charles Grigsby Memorial Pity Votes” to Jared Cotter. He didn’t suck. He’s kind of pretty. He’s from NY. He got no pimpage or backstory.

I really don’t want to see anymore of Paul Kim, Nick Pedro and Sundance AKA ManBearPig.

  • pj

Folk, thanks. Seems off to me too, but I guess we’ll find out on Thursday…

  • PamsterAtl

Okay I am really pissed off. The torture I had to endure as I allowed them to lead me down the garden path with the horrible auditions and then a lackluster Hollywood round entitled me to a great first show. Pffft – I am so disappointed. Then, I guess I am the only one left in the ai viewing world who still votes – cuz I kept getting in again and again for people — and I wonder – “Where’s the busy signal?” Of course, now I find out that the only ones voting besides myself are the VFTW —- and omg – they have chosen Sundance —- who definitely deserves the very worst award. I stopped voting after an hour and decided it was pointless. This morning, I spent a lot of time listening to Elliott to ‘cleanse my ears’. Sigh. Yes, you guys are right — even Ace & Bucky were better than last night’s group while Chris, Taylor and ELLIOTT were miles above them all.

Okay — even though I wasn’t blown away by anyone — here is how I rated them. And sorry to say – if Sundance gets thru this week and one of the others who may have grown and gotten better — I will be even more pissed. Order from weakest to best (and I use that term relatively speaking only!) Basing my scores on 10 being best.

    WAY WAY AT THE BOTTOM:
    Sundance Head score 4.0
    Jared Cotter 7.8
    Rudy Cardenas 8.0
    Sanjaya Malakar 8.5
    Paul Kim 8.7
    Chris Richardson 8.8
    Nick Pedro 8.9
    Brandon Rogers 9.0
    Blake Lewis 9.0
    Phil Stacey 9.0
    AJ Tabaldo 9.2
    Chris Sligh 9.5

So Chris Sligh sounded the best to me last night. Then AJ – and Phil, Blake and Brandon about the same. Nick sounded good but not memorable. Paul should have sounded better based on stuff I have heard from him – but he didn’t.

Of all of them, the only one I REALLY would like to NOT have another chance is Sundance – and that is based solely on last night’s singing and not on his previous stuff. I sure hope that the girls are better. Sheesh.

Oh, I’m so sorry about your mishap, but it’s plain to see that you didn’t let a little ole fall down the steps stop you from enjoying Taylor and LMBO at the superdome that night. Wish you’d been able to catch some beads from him on the float – I wonder how many Taylor fans were in NO for the parade and the event later that evening.

But, as you said – it looks like if they didn’t know who he was before, they do now and love him!

  • Little Boy Blue

    Sock it to him Sligh.

Different people have different reactions to Sligh’s wise-guy cracks.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I like it.

If Sligh isn’t interested in winning, but simply being heard long enough to be “labeled”, he can keep this up as long as he wants. After all, it’s all in the hands of the fans right now.

Taylor’s dancing antics from TI2TS to PTFMWB to Jail House Rock were in a sense, his nice way of saying — FU Simon evertime the Brit opens his trap and calls him a drunk dad.

I’d love to have Sligh continue giving us his “research results” about Simon’s past “contributions” to the music industry. I know about Spice Girls and IL DIVO. I only learned last night about Teletubbies. Send us more info Sligh — please. And do it everytime Simon snarks. That makes for good TEE VEE. It’s educational too.

AHA – I just figured out that Paul Kim’s song Careless Whisper was in a lower key than he had done it before.

The key was all wrong for him — and sorry to say – but he probably won’t get a second chance. Listening to the link on that article that LisaB posted and having realized that the 4 minute clip could not have been last night’s show — I finally hear it at Rickey’s site and was able to compare the two. AI did it again — they have done this in the past to contestants putting something in a lower key (haha to help them?) and it totally messes up the performer.

If you have the patience to listen to Careless Whisper done by Paul Kim at another time and place, understand that this is the voice that I thought was good – and not the Paul Kim we heard last night. Reposting the link to article for the mp3 clip… compare it to Rickey.org’s clip.

They did mention Taylor last night, just not his album. Maybe they will if something new happens. Taylor won and got a ton of publicity ever since. It’s not because of AI that it’s not selling as well as expected. I imagine they will have him on the show once or twice this season which may help his single.

  • PamsterAtl

Oh – didn’t anyone notice that Phil Stacy (when he was singing his best) sounded a bit like Clay Aiken?

If DialIdol’s predictions are going to be relied on ( and they’ve been quite good in the past ), it looks like Paul Kim will be back cleaning swimming pools and Nick Pedro will be back selling financial products.

My early favorites are Brandon and Blake.

I’ve liked Brandon since the start. I also like old Michael Jackson, so I wasn’t disappointed in his song choice. I liked that he slowed it up in the beginning and changed it up a bit. The dude can definately sing. I think the comment about to many runs was a good one, though. I hope he knocks it out of the park next week.

I wasn’t prepared to like Blake. I figured he was a one-trick beatboxing pony. Loved his song choice and his delivery seemed so sincere. He stumbled once, but I’m willing to overlook that considering the rest of the “talent” on display last night.

I had expected to really like Rudy and Chris Sligh. I didn’t. Rudy was a ball of cheese and Chris disappointed me with his reliance on comedy. If Chris comes out and sings with some heart next week, he could win me back. Maybe.

I was prepared to hate Sundick and I did.

I was not prepared fo Jared to be hot.

You know, it’s too bad they don’t have a mini-show recap at the last ten – fifteen minutes that showed more of the contestants so that we all could just tune in at that point and then vote based on the clips. We could avoid the hype – the judges comments – and just listen to them and get their #’s. It’s so hard to keep focused for two hours.

I can’t imagine that Taylor would ever turn down an invititation to appear on the show even if he could, Emeralgem. You can’t buy that kind of publicity.

I guess it’s expectations because I’m not even sure why they’re still talking about last season on the show although I’m always happy to hear good things about Chris D. I doubt that Taylor will get a mention every episode just like the rest shouldn’t.

cali, you heard the same thing I heard from Ryan at the beginning (about Daughtry being #1 and McPhee at #2) I want to know what the hell McPhee is #2 AT? Chris, Taylor, and Kat’s albums ALL debuted at #2. ALL THREE OF THEM. Chris is the ONLY one who has consistently maintained great sales each and every week. HOWEVER, Taylor had fantastic SECOND WEEK SALES of over 200K. He did start falling quickly after that.

Yes, aek, Kat in her 3 weeks total is still less than Taylor’s second week alone.

Ryan mentioned Jennifer Hudson up for an Oscar at the same time he said that about Daughtry and McPhee. If he were going to praise Idol accomplishments in general this year, he forgot to mention Carrie’s unbelievable success. Kat is no where CLOSE to Carrie or Jennifer musically.

I’m betting that the voting last night was really low in volume if the leader on DialIdol is Sundance. If the VFTW gang is strong enough to have him the leader, then there must not have been many votes at all.

I think this combination is a great message to send to the show that manipulates us. First, that we won’t vote in volume and second, that the worst will lead the pack.

  • MN Sue

Chris R’s voice didn’t get me as much as his lame attempt at “moving” behind the mike. The amateur hour facial expressions and twitching cracked me up. Scared little boy, yup, yup.

  • dave

I know the Sligh comments have been picked apart. I have a life outside of here but took the time to skim the last few pages.

    BUT

I rewatched parts of last night’s show and I noticed something.

Jared. I was already to hate on him. The minute we saw of him last week they wanted us to know he was a player. Couple that with last night’s chat and seeing Jared is Hot over and over again. C’mon peeps now HOT is my territory. BUT he was very respectful of the judges IMO. He was given as much negative feedback as anyone and he took it like a man.

Sligh. Its a bit early in the competition to be saying what he did to Simon. America hardly knows him. His comment also came out of left field at the point he said it. He just had to get his preplanned comment out no matter what. I didn’t think much of his performance either.

At least Kevin C. made his comment after weeks of criticism. Same with Kat’s whining. She at least had the good graces to wait before she pouted.

Re: Chris S’s talking back to Simon —

The articles I’ve read, posted by our most precious Lisab, haven’t mentioned Chris as a dog in that fight — just Ryan and Simon.

I said it last night and I’ll say it again — that will pass, most viewers were probably already asleep….no, what I meant was they probably didn’t even realize what was said until Ryan and Simon got into it.

  • aek

So basically Taylor’s sales were better in his second week ALONE, than Kat’s in three weeks total. I’m not dissing Kat here, but where’s the justice in that?

I think they are trying to make a statement that future idols need to stick with their management or put up with being dissed on the show.

I can understand the Daughtry mention, but the Kat one just blows my mind.

Edit: I just saw your post Desdemona, sorry for the repetition.

  • PamsterAtl

one other thing I noticed last night while phoning in my votes…. there were quite a few times when I didn’t get a busy signal – but I also didn’t get thru. I know now to hang up and try again rather than wait for it to tell me the call didn’t get thru. And when the phone rings rather than immediately giving me the “Thank you for voting” message (or a busy signal) – I hang up and try again.

I used to get these every now and then and they confused me at first — but now I am wondering why I got so many last night and what it means? What is happening? Anyone have any ideas?

Is it trying to see if my redials are being automated? Trust me – they’re not – I am just good at hang up & redial!

Oh, that single will chart alright. BB has approximately 7 gazillion charts including one devoted to AC airplay.

That’s why BB theme night is roughly equivalent to saying : yeah, sing whatever you like. Especially, since they have re-current charts (songs/albums > 2 years).

Even little John Stevens and Ayla Brown have charted on BB.

radname: Agree about Mr. Petersen! I assume you saw that amazing TV Guide cover of his? The letters this week were wonderful about it!

bean99: Saw-ree, but Kelly Clarkson was just amazing from the very beginning. Her first song to put her in the top 10 was just over-the-top great. She never flagged for one second.
I also disagree about last yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s group. Most of the first round of singing was pretty darn good from the ones that ended up top 10. And a few who didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t, too. Perception is interesting. I enjoyed Chris, but Taylor knocked my socks off.

No one in this first round has caused me to emit any à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Wowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢sà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . Well, they have caused me to emit a few yawns.

Kirsten: You are exactly right. Simon has been this way from the very first year. NOTHING is new in that area. I think he is often an inconsistent s.o.b., but sometimes he does give some constructive criticism. The thing is, we can so easily see the transparency of who he wants to win and how he will go about making sure that happens. If insults and childish behavior will help him in this, then he will certainly use it.

As to the continued ignoring of Taylor. I expected it after the auditions and what went on there. My guess is, any mention of him will be as a negative or nasty comment. No one will be speaking well of the winner AI did not want last year.

It bothers me, but I will try to move on. Taylor is a busy, busy guy right now and good for him.

  • dave

    XO said:

Katharine is doing respectable for a debut artist during this time of the year. If her 30%ish drop for this week holds (Billboard has not released actual final totals) then she will be in line with the drops that Beyonce and several other current artists made in their 3rd weeks. At least it wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t a huge Christmas drop off of 80%. She has a lot better chance of staying consistent- and that is far more important than huge first week sales.

Can you please tell me the last time a “debut artist” has received a marketing campaign like Kat? To me thats just a carp excuse for low CD sales. She is singer from AI. She is not doing very well.

LOL – yup – don’t ask – I think that was her intent about the flowers. Hey – that would be a great thing for Taylor to do IF he ever does show up on this year’s show. Bring onstage a bouquet of flowers and place it on the judges table. Not to ‘give’ to Paula – but to the table in general. That way — the table represents who they are representing rather than any individual – and I think they were supportive of him during the show – even if now they are following the script laid out for them by TPTB. Yes you are correct. According to IDF, Kat has moved 199K which is less than Taylor moved in either his first or second week.

Further, Kat moved further units in her third week (34,761) than Taylor did (38,585) despite the fact that Taylor’s third week was one of those awful post-Christmas weeks and Kat’s third week was during a Grammy boost weekend and she had a single out.

So, yes, I would say a bias (not to mention it seemed that Ryan was implying that they were 1 and 2 this week. They were never 1 and 2 in the same week, let alone this week).

    96 TAYLOR HICKS
    This week 11,160
    Last week 11,079
    633,885

I’m not in the math club here maybe K2 can double check my work.

    11,160-11,079=81

AI doesn’t really care who is on the show, because they know they are going to generate competition among the viewers and that will generate votes. Ryan and Simon are playing good cop, bad cop and it is a setup, and I’ll bet that Simon is sick to death of the show. I read somewhere that a big part of the show is scripted, and that includes the contestants. I feel like I have Dreamed Myself Awake. LOL

  • calimari

Bean99 – I like Rock, just not Daughtry’s style of Rock. I do think he has a very good voice. I got tired of him on Idol as I felt everything he sang started to sound the same, but when he did SING – he sounded really good. I thought he’d be in the finale.

  • MN Sue

mnsoul and MN Sue – separated at birth – fools for cold weather and Idol. Luv ya

  • folk

kat had a crazy huge marketing campaign. she was the only idol to have a single out prior to the album release…not even daughtry got that.

it is jan/feb….sure…but the market CAN support big sales numbers…in fact it is doing so for people like norah jones.

kat is part of the ai machine. she got huge promo. and her sales are pretty weak considering all that.

  • dont ask

Lisa B – Aha! – Thanks… We need more of that kindness commodity in my hometown – wonder if the mayor and city council know about this flower sending thing… :)

  • dave

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think Simon is picking on Chris S because heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not attractive. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s slamming him in any way. His criticism of him was pretty much spot on imo.

Bean99-I agree 100 percent with you.

  • folk

probably dave…because as nevada pointed out logn ago….radio play correlation to sales is very weak.

  • radname

that a big part of the show is scripted, and that includes the contestants.

kat has shed some light on the situation, and said for the AI5 cd that they were gently pushed to pick songs for the cd

norah sold over A MILLION copies the last time she released a cd, this time she sold a little over 400,000 for the first week, does that not tell you anything

  • Kirsten

dave: So all the talk about radio play is really just a waste of time. The spins he is getting on A/C radio is doing nothing for him. IMO.

He’s not getting a lot of airplay. Just over 500K listeners (and some of those would be repeats) heard the single last week.

Compare it to some of the songs on the pop charts that are getting 75 million listeners a week.

Radio airplay cannot be considered a factor on his sales yet, but a trend upward is better than nothing.

  • JJ

Can someone explain how dialidol works? I thought it just extimated who would be voted off. However, now it appears that the votes through it actually count. Is that true?

So all the talk about radio play is really just a waste of time. The spins he is getting on A/C radio is doing nothing for him. IMO.

I don’t think radio airplay has as huge of an impact as it used to. However, his sales had been going down every week, this week they went up. So, it probably had a small impact.

  • mnsoul

Wow, I have a twin, MN Sue. Foolishly loving Idol must be genetic.

Well, that or the freezing temps leave us no choice but to sit on the couch on Tues and Wed nights.

  • folk

ok radname….lets see if kat is still around in a month….

she is supposed to be a BIG new pop artist. not a little new artist. her sales do not support that theory. nor does her radio play.

  • Lisa B

That cd sales on the whole are on a downward spiral, as has been reported for months.

  • radname

dialidol is what you use to vote, you hook it up to your phone and it votes that way as opposed to dialing yourself

  • shar

For the dancing with the stars thing, is Heather Mills paul Mccartney’s wife. Doesn’t she have just one leg?

Metta and Baxter are at Taylor’s hotel? Holy moly how cool is that.

  • folk

further, kat finally moved up to 36 on all access…drilling down further, she LOST big spins in two major markets, new york and boston. so what does that tell you?

  • jersey

JJ – dial idol is a program that you download. It makes calls for you thru your computer. You just program in the number you want to dial. The software counts the number of successful votes, plus the number of busy signals. It uses statistical analysis to figure out accurate percentages. The more people that use it, the more accurate it can be.

  • radname

well kat has tyra, larry king, and two magazine covers for the next two weeks-two months so i think she should do okay, oh and her music video comes out on friday
i’m not worried for her at all

  • JJ

    Thanks radname and jersey

  • folk

i wonder with dialidol….a lot of taylor fans downloaded that program last year….and a lot, preliminarily, liked sundance….i wonder if there is a correlation.

  • tinawina

Those Dialidol results have me a little worried. As much as they sucked monkey balls last night, there are some I still don’t want to see go home yet. Namely Jared. He really broguht the sexy. Yummm… Anyway, those totals are too close for comfort, and if anyone besides Rudy, Paul, AJ, Sundance or Justin Timberfake goes home, I’ll be diaspointed.

PLEASE girls, bring it tonight, or I will be so outta here until April.

Between the fantastic hole of suckiness and the bazaar Taylor-dissing, I just may get over my Idol habit this season. So sad. :thumbdown_tb:

  • folk

videos have less to do with sales than radio.

  • Smiley

RE: CD Sales – I believe that Clive stated an idol should sell 300-500,000 just from fans generated by the show. Maybe this is not the same for the runner-up or co-winner. But wouldn’t AI fans buy the CD regardless of when it was released. Did that many people not buy Taylor’s just because it didn’t come out a couple of weeks earlier? Or did he sell basically the amount he would have sold at any time based on his fan base? It seems agreed upon that the sales are not showing an increase from AI watchers as Chris seems to be doing. (Just looking at sales, not difference in genres, etc.)

  • vegasdee

What’s up guys? Last night sucked big time. However, I will be throwing my votes to Jarred, he’s nice eye-candy.

  • PamsterAtl

I also wonder if TPTB have figured out how to outwit the dialidol program. Perhaps that is why my phone calls were getting blockage…. maybe something is in place to block the dialidol machine – and of course it is affecting the phone lines in general.

  • radname

videos have less to do with sales than radio.

then why would people spend money/time making them? like justin timberlakes latest video, or christinas new video which comes out today

  • jersey

I’m not sure what they could do Pamster. The dial idol calls originate from your home phone line just as if you were dialing the phone..I’m not sure there is any way they could tell the difference.

  • folk

    geee….why would people make videos?

    pride, ego….

christina and timberlake actually recoup costs in sales…a video is nothing for their vanity….

tell me….how is kat going to recoup a video on her sales?

Radio play seems to be most important for new artists and, to a lesser extent, to established artists trying to attract new fans.

IDOL GOES LIVE; EVERYTHING ELSE, DEAD

With the audition shows behind it, Fox’s American Idol presented its first live telecast of the season Tuesday night and once again overwhelmed the competition. The two-hour telecast averaged a 16.6 rating and a 25 share, translating to 29.44 million viewers. The show peaked in the first half of the 9:00 p.m. hour with 31.32 million viewers. Everything else airing opposite the Idol bulldozer was pretty much flattened, with the exception of CBS’s NCIS, which drew a 9.3/15 at 8:00 p.m..

Overnight Ratings: Double-Shot of Idol Puts Fox on Top

Two hours of American Idol gave Fox the top spot in primetime Tuesday, scoring a 11.7 rating/30 share in the key 18-49 demo, according to Nielsen overnights. Each half-hour of the show increased in numbers, going from a 10/27 at 8 to a 12.8/31 at 9:30.

Last week, Idol topped the charts at an overall 12.9/31.

They did mention Taylor last night, just not his album. Maybe they will if something new happens.

It would be nice if they mentioned the beginning of his tour tonight.

  • tinawina

Videos count in terms of branding an artist and for incresing awareness of an album. Depending on the genre, it can be a smart move to make one. Especially if you are popular enough that you know your video will get played on the major outlets. Even if you are new, they can be vital in setting up an image, giving you another way to stand out from your competitors. I wouldn’t exactly write off videos as useless just yet.

  • dave

I checked Ace out on Billboard last night. He sang a few songs unplugged. He was very good. The guy’s got soul.

    ———————————————–

My town has two Top 40 stations and they mimic each other rather well. For example, I hear Fergalicious and after its over I flip to the other and its playing. This morning they even did it with a song that was a hit 6 months ago. They also ran thier idol recaps on top of each other.

One of the station’s DJs liked Brandon the most and the other station it was Blake. Just sayin.

maybe she handed out bjs for producer fees.

  • SpenserJ

Okay, tryinig again to post today. Let’s see if I show up.

  • dont ask

For the one person who may have wondered who is dont ask and why is dont ask posting here today:

    1. I am not taking part in the voting on AI this year so I am looking for another irrelevant (speaking for my input only), time-consuming activity to fill that void in my life

    2. I enjoy reading what y’all have to say

Signing off for now – Carry on…Yes indeed

  • radname

because i know who her producers are?

  • SpenserJ

YEAH! I see my post now, mj must have fixed me. So, what I wanted to tell you guys was that I got an e-mail letting me know that I had won a meet and greet for tomorrow night. I guess I’ll bring my UTR cd to get signed.

  • folk

so do we radname. and they are expensive.

    are you their accountant.

you make the claim…back it up. how cheap are they?

  • Smiley

Did anyone else find it strange that Ryan kept asking the guys if they wanted to say anything back to the judges. Since when do they encourage them to talk back like that.

  • radname

kat is also being managed by the same person who manages madonna, i guess since her sales are so poor RCA stuff her with a loser because they have no faith in her :(

  • jersey

Desmonda à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ They did mention Carrie and her grammy success – I think just before they mentioned the others.

Thank you, Pam. I missed that. I am glad Ryan didn’t forget her. I only heard the 3 names and wanted to throw something at him.

bean, I heard later what Ryan said just before Sanjaya performed and I said something here about him finally mentioning Taylor’s name.

  • vegasdee

what up hot dave? I have to report, fergie was in town for all-star weekend and the radio station interviewed her and the dj’s said she was hot without all the war paint on. They interviewed early in the morn and she showed up in pj’s wihtout much make-up.

Folk, lmao. Rumor has it amongst *** fans that she recoreded 20-30 tracks, who paid for all those tracks radname? Ryan Leslie also prdouced some tracks that didn’t make the album, while he is probably not getting paid like Danja or Babyface or The Neptunes, he still cost $$$.

  • radname

so do we radname. and they are expensive.

lol some have made claims that they’re 250-500k and that is just outrageous! timbaland, who is the hottest producer right now asks 250k per song and he’s not on her cd, she has one of the same producers that taylor has, so how much money did he spend?

  • Ami

Folk, because of Simon’s and Randy’s comments many believed that Sundance had many Taylor supporters behind him. But after Hollywood rounds and last night, I haven’t heard a single Taylor fan say anything to indicate they support him.

I think there is a backlash going on and folks are voting for the worst.

That’s very interesting about Dialidol. I knew it as the place that measure busy signals to predict placements but didn’t know about dialing through them. Was that something a lot of people did last season? Maybe that’s why Chris went home so soon. My little 10-20 calls per night just wasn’t enough, lol.

  • PamsterAtl

It would be so horrible if Sundance kept getting thru – and didn’t sing any better than he did last night — and better (relatively speaking) guys lost their chances to redeem themselves. I think Sanjaya will also be around a long time regardless of how well he sings. Just my opinion… If someone earns fan backing due to their singing – then I’m fine with it. If they don’t – even if from a negative fan club — I am so sad to see things not go ‘right’ for the voting results.

Last year, for the most part – things went pretty smoothly. Two things could have changed, Kevin not get into top ten – and Chris stay at least one more week and Kat leaving instead.

  • madaboutu

If there was a real backlash, people wouldn’t vote, and it sends a message. If people accept mediocre that is what they will get………and I said it last night, it will make AI appear more than ever as a karaoke contest. So it is in their best interest to have the best. Simon was on one promo on which he said “you have to be the best to win American Idol”. Then again, we do sometimes prefer the mediocre and mind dulling to escape……and that is OK too.But when it comes to spending money on phone calls, that’s another thing. Of course, that is a personal choice.

  • radname

i think sundance should be gone but he won’t be, i actually think nick pedro should stay, i really like the tone of his voice

Okay radname, Timbaland can command up to 500k for a song that he builds from the ground up, I suggest you take a listen to his new track with Nelly F., and Justin T. where he raps……………..

When timbo is in the party everbody put up their hands
I get a half a mill for my beats… you get a couple grand
Never gonna see the day that i ain’t got the upper hand
I’m respected from californ.i.a. way down to japan
I’m a real producer and you just the piano man

Timbaland has been a hot producer since the mid 90’s, he’s big in rap and r&b for the past 10 years, more recently, within the past 4-5 years has he become more of a mainstream producer. It is not a huge logical jump to conclude that Danja, his partner could ask for half of what Tim costs, additionally, I can assure you Babyface is not cheap and neither are the The Neptunes plus if the rumors are true of the 20-30 songs recorded.

  • MN Sue

Okay, let’s see. I normally don’t care for the numbers game but here we go. I checked Amazon to see how much boost last’s night show gave the TC Two after some were slighted because Ryan mentioned their cd and not Taylor’s…pity-party continues..Chris jumped two spots..9 to 7. Katharine was 41 and still 41. Taylor, the forgotten son, was 91 and jump to 77.

So, from my standpoint only Chris’s cd is in the top ten…not surprised. Katharine’s cd, with a single on top 40 and her AI pimping has fallen almost as fast as Taylor’s, go figure.. Taylor with his very little air-play and the ignoring of the top 40 and pop, and also not much support from AI, as some want to preceive, has made the biggest jump from last night.. What could have cause that, cynical minds want to know? After all, is he not the forgotten son who’s career will never go anywhere without AI constantly mentioning him or single on top 40. Where could he have possible receiving the boast from? I’ll leave it up to the sleuths to deal with that. I honestly don’t care.

My guy has a concert tonight and I’m happy he is finally getting chance to shine on a commercial level. Good luck to him and to those who are going, have a blast.

Those guys from last night’s show are trying to get where Taylor’s at in his career. Even if it’s not much in some people’s eyes..

  • RightSaidFred

Holy Cow Batman, that would mean like, you know, like a total of $5 million dollars! No wonder record sales and producer fees donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t matter for Kat.

That must be some kind of endorsement record for an idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦you would think there would be more written about it in the press.

Amazing what you can learn in the daily chat thread.

why are there no spoilers? this is ridiculous.

I don’t know the answer, folk, but after last night, it is making me nervous. Although I don’t expect to be voting this year, I would like to be able to watch and enjoy. If the women are as bad as the guys were last night, I won’t be watching either!

And that’s all AI cares about.

she LOST big spins in two major markets, new york and boston.

There is a God..sorry guys but that single was awful. I hope she has better ones.

It seems agreed upon that the sales are not showing an increase from AI watchers as Chris seems to be doing.

Smiley, and that’s because Chris’s type of sound is what’s hot right now. Just take a look at the BB charts as see where groups with his style of music sits on the chart. They’re in the top twenty.

  • Lisa B

Worth about 2.5 million is not 2.5 million in your pocket. It’s spin.

  • dave

Yes,PJ, those two stations. Its fun hearing about AI on the radio(not sure why), thats why I had those stations on.

All this Kat talk. LOL. The fact is she still has not reached the amount of CDs she should have sold due to the AI fan base. Maybe she’s Over It.

Taylor Hicks received 65 million votes to win the American Idol crown last year, too. It’s in every news story you read about how many votes were counted last year. They all say he got 65 million votes.

Sexygirl, I realize the difference in the genres. I was really making an observation about sales from the AI fan bases. If Taylor’s 600,000 seem to be so unacceptable for a winner what does that point to for the runner-up. Wouldn’t the AI fan base buy the CD regardless of when it was available? Supposedly it shouldn’t matter if it comes out in January or whenever for the AI watchers who wait so impatiently for their favorites to release.

Someone at VFTW posted that Sundance’s number (whatever it means) at DialIdol is like 20.08. Last year after the first week performances Taylor’s DialIdol number was around 60 and three of the guys were in the 20s. Now I admit that I don’t know exactly what that means (or if it’s accurate – can’t find the archives there), but if it’s true then it appears people were indeed voting much more heavily last season than they are so far this season.

For Sexy Hair Concepts, which has grown to sales of about $50 million since it was launched in 1999, playing on a level field with the likes of Matrix or Redken will take far more marketing know-how and power, industry experts say.

    “Killing me Loudly”

I was shopping at a local store today and they were playing the lite radio station. A song started that I haven’t heard in a really long time and that I really love, then all of a sudden it turned into a hip/hop/dance/rap or whatever the hell they call it beat and the song was completely ruined IMO. I am just posting this to make myself feel better.

My wife picked up a Rolling Stone magazine after a friend had read it.

Two interesting articles to note :

    1) HEADLINE : à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Labels in Free Fallà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

SUMMARY : Sales of Albums have hit their NADIR since Soundscan started tracking them 16 years ago. There was an overall drop of 40% compared to 1996.

DREAMGIRLS was the top selling album last month. It sold just 66,000 units (TM). It is tops today, but 10 years ago, that number would barely make the top 20.

Rolling Stone mag also talks about dirty radio pay-for-play practices. These factors combine for a grim future for the record sales business.

    2) HEADLINE: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“How Dispatch Sold Out The Gardenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

Question : Have you ever heard of the group/band named — DISPATCH ? if not, welcome to the club. Me neither ( and I thought I knew my music scene pretty well ).

So what is this band — DISPATCH ? Well, like Taylor Hicks and his LiMBO, they’ve pretty much flown Under the Radar (TM).

However, they have been touring and giving live performances regularly since 2000. They’ve also released 4 indie records that sold LESS than Taylor Hicks did in 9 weeks ( 600,000 units (TM) ).

DISPATCH band members went their own ways 3 years ago, but
recently decided to come back for a charity re-union concert at Madison Square Garden.

Guess what ? when the tickets went on sale in MYSPACE (that’s right, I said MYSPACE), their first show sold out in an hour !! That’s 20,000 seats folks !!

There was great clamor for their concert… so like Taylor Hicks ( who originally planned a 23 city tour ), they added a second and then a third concert ( all sold out within half a day !! ).

Question — HAVE YOU EVEN HEARD OF “DISPATCH” ??

It seems to be the concert business is prospering even as record sales are declining.

Taylor Hicks’ career has just began and he knows where the profit is. He is trying to build a reputation as a live performing star. He says he loves doing it and he thrives at it… what’s not to celebrate ?

  • emeralgem

Bobbi… You are more than welcome.. Sorry, I was so late in posting it.. Hopefully, I will heal before my niece gets married on March 2 in Miami. Right now my left knee is almost the size of a basketball, and my toes look like BIG FAT sausages.. BLACK and BLUE too..

Bobbi. What I want to know is how did you teach your dog how to lock the door?

LMAO!! No, it is a sliding glass door to the deck. It wasn’t locked…..he just knocked the security bar into the pocket, so I couldn’t open the door. My deck is second floor level and doesn’t have steps down (to protect us from bears) so I couldn’t even get to a neighbor’s house. I screamed my throat out but no one heard me.

    Hi Everybody,

I guess I’m one of the few who voted last night. And I’m going to do the same tonight. I don’t have any clear favorites yet but I liked AJ last night and I figured he probably needed some votes.

I remember reading a post on one of the forums (no idea which one) by a lady who met Bucky and Elliott (my two favorites from last year) in the Las Vegas airport as they were returning from their session with Barry Manilow. They told her how important the votes were to them. I had been voting anyway but I decided then that despite my skeptiscism on how much they really mattered that I would continue voting for the remaining contestant that I liked best. My votes for Elliott switched to Taylor for the final.

If the people at VFTW are indeed skewing the results then I find that downright pitiful. I don’t use DialIdol because I think I have a better method and I’m willing to share it. Every version of Windows comes with a program called Hyperterminal that allows you to use dial through your modem. You just set it up and then with a few clicks of your mouse you can dial, hangup and redial. For the more adventuresome, I take it one step further by using a macro program that clicks the mouse for me on my laptop while I read all the blogs on my desktop. It’s not a speed dialler and you get the same number of votes in that you would by pressing hangup and redial; you just don’t wear out your fingers. I shared this with some Taylor fans for the final and I still have the instructions. If any of you are interested, you can send me an email using this name. I’m at bellsouth.net

  • PamsterAtl

well here’s hoping tonight will have some GOOD singing. It may be that TPTB have been hiding the extra special singers and we’ll finally get to see them tonight. A new message from Taylor on his myspace:

    Hey everyone!

Guess what today is? It’s the first day of my national tour. It’s still kind of surreal to be saying that but I am very excited to get on stage tonight and play for everyone. Right now, I am in Jacksonville, FL resting up in my hotel room before I head over to the venue for soundcheck and some press. I woke up yesterday feeling a bit under the weather but I have been taking all the necessary measures to make sure I am 100% ready to perform tonight. I have to take care of my voice and rest it for all the work it is going to be doing over the next 4 months. I hope everyone is as excited for this live music as I am and I can’t wait to come on here and read your feedback.

I won’t give away any surprises yet but the set list is gonna rock! Make sure you check out graycharles.com for my audioblogs and as the tour gets started, check back for some exclusive behind the scenes footage on the road! You can see what my band and I are really up to on the road in between the shows!

Look forward to seeing everyone on the road. Soul Patrol!!

  • Little Boy Blue

    look this one upà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Guster.

Well lookie here — a band that has been together for 10 years !! ( as long as Taylor Hicks has been flying Under The Radar ).

They’re described as a playful yet literate, spirited and largely acoustic pop-rock band ( sounds like LiMBO to me ).

They’ve got at least 5 albums listed at Amazon (all of them NOT EVEN in the top 1000 ). And here we are, Taylor’s fans whining about his selling a “mere” 633,000 units (TM) in 10 weeks and only ranking #77 at Amazon.

Question : How large a venue do they play and do they regularly sell out ?

  • PamsterAtl

Onlyforelliott — I totally agree about voting and even though I get weary – I probably will continue to vote. However, I may just try your method. I gotta leave now – but maybe later I will check into that. At least by next week’s voting.

Little Boy Blue Feb 21st, 2007 at 4:24 pm

My wife picked up a Rolling Stone magazine after a friend had read it.

Excuse me Little, but do you by any chance post over at the “Boogie Board” under the nick Jenni Jac? I ask because there is a post there from last night that is so similar to yours — nearly identical in fact except that yours is an abridged version — that it is hard to believe that the two comments are not written by the same person. Same choice of words and conclusions. I thought it was an interesting post when I read it yesterday.

    Spooky stuff, huh?

  • Little Boy Blue

guster is friggin HUGE. ask any college kid about Guster. i saw them back in the dayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦they still are awesome.

Oh I have no doubt they are. There are a lot of bands out there who never make airplay who are orders of a magnitude better than what we get on the radio.

And that’s EXACTLY my point — we worry too much about record sales as if they are the be all and end all of an artist’s career.

    I checked Guster’s Amazon ranking and here’s what I get :

Lost and Gone Forever : Ranked 5,580
Keep It Together : Ranked 4,492
Ganging Up on the Sun: Ranked 726
    GOLDFLY: Ranked 41,261

By this measure — Amazon ranking, they’re a “failure” ( note the quotes ). I am quite certain they play to sold out and huge venues all the time.

And that’s my point — Perhaps the Soul Patrol is looking at the wrong place in “measuring” the “success” of Taylor Hicks. They get all caught up in Clive Davis’ “units” game without understanding that the music industry has changed and it’s not all about selling “units” anymore.

Take Elton John for instance…. he is 60 years old and will be celebrating his birthday with a concert at the same place DISPATCH sold out — Madison Square Garden ( that’s March 21, 2007 ). His tickets sell from $190 to $575 !!

Now look at his latest album ( released I think October last year )… it ranks a lowly 1,594 at Amazon and sold a “mere” 300,000 units (TM). Not even enough to make GOLD ( perhaps it was RIAA certified GOLD, but on retail, he did not make 500,000 ). People just aren’t interested in his recent music anymore. But his concert reputation precedes him.

That’s what I think Taylor Hicks is aiming for….he wants to build a solid touring and live performing reputation and he is well on his way. You can’t get any better “push” than a nationwide recognition (better than DISPATCH or GUSTER ) with an established fanbase like Soul Patrol. But he wants to slowly build up his reputation to expand his base. That’s a good thing.

Forget American Idol pimping him or ignoring him… he’s way pass that now ( and he knows it when he used the controversial word “fizzle” ).

He was on that FLOAT for more than 4 hours, and did NOT have a jacket on when I saw him…I don’t even remember him having on that sweater that he is wearing in some of the pictures posted over at the GC site.

Someone posted earlier about Amazon moves since last night. The biggest jump has been Elliott who moved from in the hundreds to 57 (last time I checked). That’s ahead of Taylor at the moment. How many people even know E has an album out? That info certainly hasn’t been revealed on AI. It is very nice that 3 of the current guys mention him as the favorite idol on their video blog. I especially like Jared Cotter’s description of running to the TV after hearing E’s voice.I think E actually got mentiond more than Taylor and Chris. I’m not voting and certainly wouldn’t vote on looks BUT if I was, Jared would get my vote. He’s about the only guy who is actually hot this year. IMO of course. Seems like a decent guy and is from my hometown. Go Jared.

  • cheese

    RSF is HOT.

This is the first time in 3 seasons that I am actually more interested in hearing the girls sing than I am in seeing the guys sitting in the “Dawg Pound” (ew) during the semi-finals. I hope the bad ones are realllly bad (maybe someone could sing My Destiny worse than Kat did?)

The biggest jump has been Elliott who moved from in the hundreds to 57 (last time I checked). Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s ahead of Taylor at the moment. How many people even know E has an album out?

Last night WAS Elliott tribute night on AI. Unfortunately, one of the reasons I wasn’t a big Elliott fan had to do with his song choices…

Is Amazon offering Elliott’s CD as a twofer with Daughtry or something? Because I think he has the #1 record in the country and Kat is #2. :dry_tb:

  • Little Boy Blue

    Hmm, Guster. donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t they play at those à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“student gigsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ?

Yep, and the point is… Simon Cowell made a similar remark to Chris Sligh after his performance — “I felt like I was at some weird student gig…”

That’s another point I want to make. The answer to this is really — SO WHAT ?

Guster is BIG in the college student scene and they sell out concerts. Is that a bad thing ?

Moreover, is it a bad thing for American Idol that someone knows musicians like MUTE MATH, KEANE and performs music from bands like Guster or Dispatch ?

If I were Sligh, I’d take that as a compliment. In fact, looking back, if Sligh ( with his ravenous music knowledge ), would have retorted — “I take that as a compliment… student gig bands like Guster are huge concert draws !”. I’d like to hear Simon’s response to that one.

  • Little Boy Blue

Go to Gray Charles’ site… Taylor has an audio blog.

    Here’s what worries me :

    1) He took allergy shots.

    2) He says he’s about 80% ready ( what not 100% ?? )

  • SEXYGIRL

Absolutely, letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s meet up! Have you signed on at Touristas yet? We can exchange email addresses there if that is convenient for you.

    where is this site, mary?

    Smiley,

I agree with you. I was thinking the same thing also when the whole argument was taking place before Kat’s cd came out but it appears as if it all depends on who we’re talking about. Different strokes seems to be for different folks. Normally, they would push to get the cds out for the first and second place finishers so they can capitialized on the hype. Hence, Taylor’s being dropped in December instead of when he actually wanted too.

On the subject of Kat, this cd from her is all she is and will be doing. I will bet my house on that. She is not interested in selling cds nor being a singing artis because he is not interested in working real hard like mere mortals. Her image will carry her through her career and her average talent will be enough to do the rest. That cd was just and obligatory AI cd. TPTB already knows and have accepted that fact. That is why she is hyped over Taylor and placed in the same light with Chris. With her, it was never about cds sales. That cd is just a novelity. Her image is what AI is pushing.

I’ve always felt that htere was something screwy going on behind the scenes with her. Chris is hyped because he is selling cds for the AI machine but what’s up with Kat. That she could have one of the lowest single sales and her cd sales being subpar at best but she is still treated better than the first place finisher, makes entirely no sense. Never mind being placed in the same light as someone selling 1.6 million cd when she is barely selling 300,000. As I said before, I can understand AI hyping Chris over Taylor because of his sales and even trying to jump on the Jennifer Hudson bandwagon but not Kat. The girl has brought nothing to the table and is treat just as good, if not better than those who are busting their A**…Hmmm, sounds familiar.. It also seems as if, just like Chris, nothing bad could be said or printed about her. Taylor is not selling well and he gets dismissed by AI. Kat cd is sinking just as fast as Taylor’s , even with all it’s investment and top 40 radio play, and she is still being hyped by AI.

IMO, AI is truly sending the right message to our young kids with Kat. If your pretty, everything in life should automatically fall into your lap. If your not, then you need to bust your butt to succeed.

I guess last season was unique. Maybe by the end of this season everything will be back to the normal. First place and second place treatment.

OK, Taylor, can you drop the Soul Patrol now? I dont like it and afterall, its all about me if you havent been informed.

Gosh, I never checked to see which one was linked with which other, so out of curiosity I checked our group 5 idols, and danged if Daughtry isn’t linked with every single one of them except Elliott and Bucky! Bucky & Kellie don’t get linked to anyone. We have:

    Daughtry/Taylor
    Taylor/Daughtry
    Kat/Daughtry
    Kellie/Daughtry
    Elliott/Kat
    Bucky/Elliott

I know everyone was anxious to know this. :)

    Sexygirl:

What you said in your post makes no sense whatsoever. If TPTB had issues with Kat they would just pretend she doesn’t exist- they’ve done it to a lot of runner ups. They are promoting her because she gets a lot of media attention and her sales are not at all a failure for a RUNNER UP.

I love how the Soul Patrol doesn’t like Taylor to be compared to other American Idol winners, but some of them are very, very quick to compare Katharine to the winners. Um, she didn’t win- therefore the same expectations are not there. She has already outsold 2 of the AI runner ups and is on track to sell at least what Kellie Pickler and Bo Bice sold. Leaving Clay and Chris as the only ones who didn’t win to beat her in sales.

As for her drops in sales, I believe that they are very similiar to Chris Daughtry’s and her percentage drop in her 3rd week was MUCH lower than Taylor’s. So, she is not sinking as fast as Taylor. She only sold what 10k less then he did in his third week compared to her third week? And he sold much more in the first two weeks.

I’ve said it over and over again- it is about consistency and longevity. It is way too soon to know if she will tank or go platinum.

Yes, congrats to Taylor for having a big enough fanbase from AI to sell gold and ship platinum. But so far, he has not proven that he can do anything beyond that.

But Taylor is doing what he loves, and Katharine has said that she is loving her album and promoting it too. They are both happy and that is what success is really about.

  • Little Debbi

  • AFan

I’ve been reading over the past couple of pages… people talking about numbers and all that. First of all, (and I’m speaking about both Taylor and Kat people) I don’t believe someone should be posting something if they don’t have any facts to back it up. If someone here can get us some actual evidence that Kat’s producers were insanely expensive, then that would be great. I’m totally ignorant about that kind of stuff so I have no idea and I’m not going to pretend like I do know…
    moving on,
I think the reasoning behind people saying Kat is doing better than Taylor is based on a number of things. There is no doubt that Taylor has a huge AI fanbase. Most people are aware of this. I know Taylor fans hate the Claymate comparison but it’s very similiar. Clay had an amazing first week and fell faster than you can say “sex with a pornstar in a hotel room.” This kind of happened with Taylor as well. In terms of sales, yes, Taylor is the more popular artist. But media attention shows that Kat is the bigger star.
I’m not saying one of them is better than the other. Taylor and Kat are like polar opposites. They should not be compared. Every fanbase is going to be OK with the place there person is at. Taylor fans are fine with him not getting attention because they have the tour and he’s still delivering. Kat fans are OK with the less than Taylor sales and are happy that she’s delivering with her TV appearances and what not.
I think the war between fanbases is dumb but it’s understandable. If you hate somebody, you’re probably going to hate the people who really like them and you’re really gonna HATE the people who worship them. There’s no way to change that. I think that, at this point, people are just trying to piss each other off.
I don’t like Taylor a lot of the time. He’s annoying and creeps me out. Kat can be kind of annoying as well to me even though I like her better.
With that said, I don’t think Kat is doing poorly at all. Someone earlier made the argument about how Norah Jones sold over a million in her first week last album and this time it was only 400k or so. The music industry has changed dramatically. Remember when Ashlee Simpson went platinum her first week? That would NEVER happen again. All of them are doing well in sales.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

L’il Deb, I would have kept screaming. I have some problems ambulating since my stroke and would be scared to death to try to drop from the deck. Eventually, I would have gotten someone’s attention. It was just bad timing…..everyone was at work. But, can you believe, in mid-February, I actually got a bit of a sunburn? I’m bright pink tonight!

  • mags

Daughty(also for Kat and Taylor) right having people from famous bands or singers help out w/ thier album a major rock/rb producer /rb work with and money to help out. Yeah it happens to them struggling artists all the time nickelback just knocks on thier door…. Wait I hear the door bell hi snow patrol you are here to help……( I think being on ai helped them just a weee bit..) John mayer nad norah jones chose the wrong hard path to get exposure….

Break a leg tonight, Taylor!!! Cheers! ;)

  • AFan

I have to comment on last nights Idol too. I thought it was crap. SO SO BAD. None of the guys were impressive at all. I remember last year I was BLOWN AWAY by Chris and Elliott. I even though Ace and Taylor had something. This year, there were no standouts vocally. I think Chris Robinson was cute and I think he’s got an interesting voice even though it might become a little to Timberlake poser annoying for me later on. I thought Blake was really cool as well but nothing to the extent of some of the guys last year. Chris Sligh must have thought his “funny” comments were going to go over well. And I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. They probably looked really great on paper. But under all the pressure and with Ryan there plus the nervous delivery, it backfired. I still think he’s cool though. He sang a crappy song but there’s no doubt he’s getting into the top 12.
For the girls today, I kind of like Antonella. I know, typical of a Kat fan to say this, but I think she will do well tonight. I also think Gina Glockson will deliver. Nobody else really sticks out to me except the Jordin girl with the big hair kind of impressed me when they showed her in hollywood. The there’s the woman with the baby and the backup singer. Everyone else looks that same to me.

  • xoxoyc

Oh and to the person who said Kat should have pulled Norah Jones type sales in her first week:

Taylor who WON AI couldn’t sell 400k at CHRISTMAS. Chris released Black Friday and couldn’t sell 400k. So, um the controversial and less popular (because she lost in a supposed landslide) runner up is supposed to do what the winner and chosen one could not do? Yeah, that makes sense.

The market just does not support 400k first weeks hardly at all anymore.

Have Taylor, Chris release in January and they would have done half of what they sold in December. Christmas sales are very over inflated.

One has gone on to very consistent sales and ocassional gains. The other has just dropped and continues to do so.

That is the difference. It’s too early to know which way Kat will go.

emeralgem, i wasn’t talking about you, infact, i’m not totally sure who you are… nor did i say hate is the polar opposite of love. i said kat and taylor are polar opposites. i also said that some people on here hate kat and some hate taylor. maybe hate is too strong of a word. who cares… it’s just a word. i could use strongly dislike if you’d like. that doesn’t matter. and that wasn’t my point. i’m not talking about CORE emotions here either. i’m talking about the fanbase wars. and good for you if you have NEVER posted anything to PISS anyone off. i have, and probably 89% of the people here have as well. i’m saying that i’m not going to do that anymore. not because i feel bad or anything, just because i dont care and i finally realized how ridiculous it is to pit Kat and Taylor or Taylor and Chris against each other.

  • Paula

Sexygirl — You said something in your post that got me thinking. Ever since Chris’ sales have been so goo, Kat has chosen to be a fan of his — not so much with Taylor anymore (I’m happy about that though).

For all the publicity, McTata’s and crotch shots, Sexyhair, shows on TV, and single before the CD, she should be selling way more CD’s than she is. I don’t believe the other runner-ups got nearly the promotion that Kat got, so you can’t compare her to them.

Kat isn’t a typical AI contestant in the following ways.

1.) she was able to have a fair amount of say in the overall direction of her album, although she concedes that there were some tracks she loved that didn’t make the final cut.

2.) she took a big risk by shifting gears. she had built a pretty solid fanbase on AI by singing standards so forth. it would be stupid to deny that she probably sacrificed a fair amount of sales by going in the direction she chose.

3.) she released her debut album in January, after the new season of idol had started. January numbers are always lower and she sacrificed holiday sales as well. plus, there’s the notion that the public has “moved on” to a new crop of contestants.

4.) in the world of American Idol, 200,000 “units” sold in 3 weeks might not be a lot, but it’s certainly a respectable amount for a debut artist.

  • shar

I predict Lakisha is gonna rock the house tonight. Her audition and Hollywood round was some kind of powerful. She has a powerhouse of a voice, has good control, and adds a certain flair of her own to make the song unique. This is the person to watch I think.

Now if only I can effin stay awake to watch her cause I got a feeling it’s going to be another long ass night. How do you get 67 commercials in a 2 hour show? Is this the world record, has anybody called the damned Guiness Book people? Ryan talking about all the accomplishments of *** and Chris, hell, here’s a huge accomplishment right under their noses.

B, you know I love Kat but I honestly have to say that I really don’t think she had much of a say in her direction. I’m sure she did turn down a lot of songs but I think most artists do that. I think her saying that was mainly a credility thing… to give people the impression that she called some of the shots since that’s one of the main criticisms of AI artists.

  • shar

Griz, if you are still around, congrats on getting 14th row seats, that is awesome! San Fran is FINALLY going on sale but not until March. Should I use Ticketmaster as my best chance at good seats?

You are 100% correct. It’s good for a debut artist who no one has really heard of it. It’s mediocre for a 2nd place finisher on the
#1 show on television who has been on TV almost non-stop for weeks.
Idols can not be compared to “debut artists” like Lily Allen, etc.
They are compared to other idols. In that comparison, Kat falls somewhere in the middle. Nothing great, nothing horrible. Since her promotion has been exceptional, I would say her performance now is fair. Maybe she’ll have legs and be on the charts in weeks to come. We’ll see.

  • griz

Thanks shar! That’s 5 rows better than I had before – and I have quick access to the center aisle for impromtu dancing LOL! I’m SOOO excited – still 10 weeks away for me, but the anticipation is 1/2 the fun, right? Looking forward to all the great reviews and feedback along the way!

Hope you snag AWESOME seats in San Fran!!! I had better luck with ticketmaster than with THHQ… so….

I hope Taylor is 100% tonight – he had to take allergy shots, poor guy, but I have a feeling when the roar of the crowd gets going, he’ll forget ALL about his symptoms LOL!

If you’re gonna say that Kat’s 199,000 in three weeks is “respectable” for a new artist, then Taylor’s 583,000 in his third week would have been OUTSTANDING, right? Unfortunately, that’s not how the buzz is ‘coming down’ in the real world.

Funny how we spin things to backup our agenda, eh?

  • xoxoyc

Well JPfan considering that Katharine has outsold 2 of the 4 runner ups and is gaining on the 3rd one- well history does not show that the runner ups sell well at all.

So the fact that she is in the middle of the pack of the runner ups is a good thing. And honestly, she very well could be the second highest selling runner up if she can beat Bice’s numbers and she has a good shot.

Griz Taylor is being compared to WINNERS. Compared to the other winners in their 10th week his sales SUCK as he is dead last. (Winners only).

Katharine is being compared to RUNNER UPS. Compared to the other runner ups in their 3rd week Katharine is doing pretty nicely for herself, having already outsold two of them completely. (Runner ups only).

  • griz

Griz Taylor is being compared to WINNERS. Compared to the other winners in their 10th week his sales SUCK as he is dead last. (Winners only).

This IS Taylor’s 1st major label debut – you can NOT compare his indie albums sold at one local Alabama store as his 1st and 2nd albums. Those were sold out of that one store and his trunk. Geeze!

True, but the same could be said for Taylor. So Taylor got more promotion than other winners, and sold the least.

Katharine got more promotion than other runner ups (except for maybe Clay who got quite a bit) and she sold middle of the pack.

And yes though you all want to deny it until you are blue in the face, January does make a difference. Had Kat released in December she would have sold 200k in one week instead of 3.

lol well you donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get 2.5 million (which is a two year deal) for one year. so the total wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be 5 million. and it has been in the press

If Katharine’s Big & Sexy contract is anything like the typical celebrity endorsement deal, that $2.5 million is “potential,” not actual. These contracts have escalation clauses which provide for future payments and/or bonuses DEPENDING UPON whether or not certain events occur — almost always increased sales or market share, with X dollars earned at specified percentages — during the contract term.

There’s no question she received an advance on signing and an additional payment when the contract was extended, but I sincerely doubt that she’s received $2.5 million.

  • longsong

Woulda, coulda, shoulda. I predict that unless Kat shaves her head in the next few weeks, by this time next year it’ll be “Kat who?”

And yes though you all want to deny it until you are blue in the face, January does make a difference. Had Kat released in December she would have sold 200k in one week instead of 3.

That is PURE speculation. But if thinking of it that way makes you justify Kat’s poor sales, go ahead. They don’t put astericks on historical Billboard charts with a pity note: (*but this was sold in January and didn’t get xmas sales). The numbers stand alone.

  • Paula

It was supposedly Kat’s decision to release in January so that she’d get better sales. However, I feel the real reason she released in January is because she wasn’t ready in December — couldn’t get her album up to par by the time it should have been released.

  • SEXYGIRL

Xo, my post was never a Kat vs. Taylor post. It was a observation on how she is risen to a level that other idols, Chris, Taylor, Elliott..etc, have to work hard to get too. Chris deserves his spotlight given to him. His cds has met the AI cd sales requirements. Would he be where he’s at in their eyes if his cd was not selling, I have a feeling the answer would be no.

Of course my post woould not make any sense because you want to believe that Kat really do care about others things besides her looks and how far she can get with it. Let me remind you of her Larry King interview with Randy and Taylor. Where Randy had to remind that her first obligation was to make a cd. When she was going off about wanting to act. If you have the tape, it’s worth re-watching.

AI invested money on this cd because they wanted a cd out of her as obligated by EVERY second place finisher on that show.. They want to make some money from her fanbase and more, if possible. Just like all the other second place finishers.

I personally don’t care whether AI acknowledge Taylor or not. I’ve made my feels known on that subject and I’m not a person who will change her mind just because situations changes. So I don’t plan on feeling any differently when AI do start treating him as others feel he should be treated. I am just stating a fact. Every second place finisher on AI whose cd did not sell well was not hyped and praised and placed in other Idol’s spotlight. Even Bo, who sold close to 650,000 was not placed in the same spotlight with Carrie Underwood. Every second place finisher has been put to the side and mentioned when it was convenient for the AI machine…

On to a better topic. Season Six and the women performing. Taylor’s tour begins tonight..

….Had Kat released in December she would have sold 200k in one week instead of 3….

Attacking people who don’t happen to like your Idol makes you look like an idiot, not them.

    Just so’s ya know.

  • xoxoyc

There’s been so much Taylor spin going on in this blog for the past months, that I find the topic of Kat spin amusing. Hello pot this is kettle you’re black. (TM Friends!)

Kat released in January because she would get MORE promotion and a better shot at longevity and consistency. She and the label KNEW that she would have less sales than she would have had in December- that is a given.
December sales are grossly inflated, the recent Billboard charts are plenty of proof of that.

    On to season 6!

  • jeannie

Kat’s sales SUCK! On to season 6!

Let’s raise our glasses in a TOAST to Taylor, who tonight begins his lifelong dream of HEADLINING his own national tour! You done GOOD dude!!

    BREAK A LEG!!!!!!!!

Cheersies Griz, Taylor and all Taylor fans, our guy IS living HIS dream, not ours. Now I am going to go watch the ladies and hope for a better show than last night. My money is on Lakisha.

  • weelassie

hey, guess what, I think i’m being called a hag. LOL.

  • weelassie

posting this little gem again-if I like someone I don’t give a fig if their cd comes out in Jan, March, November, December or next year-i will still purchase it. This is NORMAL behavior.

  • madaboutu

griz………since you are on the same coast as I am, so not watching AI yet………wasn’t someone supposed to be having a cellcert tonite from Jacksonville? If so, where was it? I cannot get on the AI message boards at all to see if there is info there. I hope the concert goes well as far as T’s voice. Someone here who went to Chris concert the other nite said he had bronchitis and that is a constant concern when your concert comes up.

LOL, is Kat missing her boots, I think I just found them.

  • patty cee

look, it’s simple. there is no conspiracy. people tend to chat up whoever is doing well and in the news at the moment. it’s human nature. taylor has had his day and will again. i fully believe everyone at ai is pulling for him. when taylor does well, it reflects well on the brand name. in this light, weeks of posts consumed by conspiracy theories seems, well, bizarre.

as randy has suggested, not unkindly and not without respect, taylor didn’t fully pull-off his major-label debut. i have no reason to believe he is not taking it like a man in terms of dealing with the fallout and analyzing what happened and planning what comes next. he’s no baby! and in this business, you get an idol push, then you are on your own. fantasia doesn’t sell the best but has enormous critical respect. taylor needs to do really well commercially or critically to keep the good buzz alive. if he’s not getting that buzz right now, he needs to figure out why. and i’m sure he will.

personally, i hope next time he makes a tight little indie CD (or maybe a live-tour one) filled with real rockin’ soul and blues, not another pop hybrid experiment.

so now he’s got his tour and that’s awesome. i believe in his talent and am sure he will have a long career. he’s got charisma to burn and when he’s soulful and hurtin’, i think he’s amazing and can transport the listener to someplace where you are in the moment, right there with him. to me he is the zen master of soul.

i was married to a performer with a ton of charisma. i used to call him Mr. Charming because of the way he could wrap women around his finger. i know something about groupies and star worship. as an ex-wife, i never had and never will have a lot of respect for the worshipful groupies; i thought they were neurotic, deluded, pathetic. they had, to say the least, a truncated and overly optimistic assessment of my troubled but fine honey’s personality based on what he let them see of himself onstage. i am sure if taylor, a real guy, read these boards and got a taste of the rampant paranoia, the convoluted attempts to explain away less than record-breaking sales, the hyper-alert attention to any perceived slight, and got a chance to meet these overly-invested fans and speak honestly to them, he would slam these cyper-groupies and tell them he doesn’t need their oddball coddling. at the very least, he’d tell them to lighten up.

Good news to give to the guy on tour tonight.

griz……..all of us would like to be there to see the very first Taylor Hicks solo concert. I wonder who will be opening for him when he gets here. There was talk of a cellcert, but I don’t remember where it was, or if it might just have been wishful thinking. Gray says we will get some vids as well as reviews, so that is cool.

    BREAK A LEG!!!!!!!!

To Taylor!!! May this be the start of the biggest, longest, most successful ride of your life – and for those of us who get to attend your concerts.

  • http://jgrollersellshomes.com juliegr

Taylor is singing “The Maze” at the concert. I’m getting the cellcert from Boogie!

  • Little Boy Blue

    Folks,

I’ve watched 7 girls sing already tonight. We can safely conclude that the girls are WAYYYY better than the boys at this juncture.

In fact, had it not been for the 6/6 gender rule, I’d say that I don’t mind having more girls than boys ( as in Season #3 ).

The following were outstanding — Stephanie Edwards, Sabrina Sloan and Jordin Sparks ( yes, the 17 year old ). Leslie Hunt was OK but did not give us the “wow” moment. As I expected, Antonella sucked and so did Amy.

  • Former_AI_Junkie

Chris Sligh better shut his trap or Simon will try to get him eliminated. There’s only so much that egomaniac can take. I hope Chris is smart enough to realise this inside the bubble he’s in at the moment.

Taylor is singing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Mazeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ at the concert. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m getting the cellcert from Boogie!

Note — Taylor absolutely LOVES this song. He said so.

Of course a lot of Soul Patrolers don’t care for it.

  • http://jgrollersellshomes.com juliegr

Now singing Hell of a Day

  • Former_AI_Junkie

Sligh’s vocals were just OK. A bit too short of breath at many spots (I wonder why). And a slight, yet noticable lisp.

  • Little Boy Blue

Sabrina Sloan reminds me of Gloria Estefan.

I looked at her picture and there is a striking similarity.

After 8 performances ( most of them good ), I’d say Sabrina’s was the best thus far.

Sticking up for The Maze…the reason I like it (and i know i’ve said it before), it reminds me of a real song from the late ’60s, a really happy and sweet song. it doesn’t sound like an attempt at that kind of song. it sounds like the real thing. it’s well-written and here, the arrangement suits the song. I’d love to hear it live sometime.

Tonight is a lot better than last night (on AI). What a nightmare THAT was.

lakisha had something that melinda and stephanie didn’t have (IMO they all have similar type of voices) she had the range, the richness, the tone, and the conviction. i hope she brings it next week, my dad said that usually as the show goes on they end up sounding like she did, and she’s already at that stage, i wonder what she’s going to do next week.

    Lakisha. was.

    there are no words.

MY GOSH! She is unbelievable! There were several outstanding performances tonight. I can’t remember all the names – I’ll just say that none of the “A” named girls were memorable. In fact, the two girls who sang 1st and 3rd places, I think (Samantha, Sabrina?), Jordan, Melinda, and OMG Lakisha!!! I am reminded of the movie “White Boys Can’t Jump” – well, tonight it could be said that “White Girls Can’t Sing” – not when they’re up against those outstanding girls tonight!

I really, really wanted Haley to be fantastic – she’s beautiful, and she’s from Texas, by golly! But she didn’t. Gina would have been good except for that horrible note that she said she hit (yeah, about like kat hits all those high notes)

    Good job tonight, GURLS!!!

  • MaryS-NJ

radname, I liked Kat in the early rounds. I prefer her singing with less “whipped cream” (TM – Simon) on top. I loved Taylor’s voice immediately. I loved Tami Gosnell’s voice this season immediately

Rad, last week at Lakisha’s hollywood round, she pratically had me in tears with what 10 or 15 seconds. She adds so much flair and feeling to the song, she truly has the gift and yes it is amazing that she is this good this early in the competition..kudos to her.

Taylor sang WILMH, he better sing it in Boston for Dingo or I’m going to throw the bunny slipper at him, lol. Dingo will go nuts when he sings that song.

  • Tracy

Lakisha might possibly be the savior of season six. She was OUTSTANDING.

  • radname

i prefer kat singing with less vocal gymnastics as well (perfect example of just enough – can’t help falling in love with andrea)

from what i read on the boogie and seasons of soul, sounds like it was a great concert with a great set list. i didn’t do the cellcert but they say the phone reception was pretty decent. he did a lot of originals and some doobie bros as well as a few songs from the album. lots of harp playing. great vocals and high energy. people there were really stoked.

ps lakisha was awesome. i’m really happy for her. to me, it was a star-making moment.

This looks like season 3 all over again. Lakeisha and Melinda are the divas all over again. Been there, done that. Idol takes a big step backwards. Who is really going to get excited about the divas all over again. What a shame. Season 5 was so, so great.

I agree 100%. Obviously this year one diva is going to win. I liked Lakeisha but there are so many powerhouses out there just like her. I dunno. I loved Season 5.. This season is just meh…

I still love Blake though.. I think he is great I hope he beats Lakeisha.
Although it is going to be tough.

  • MaryS-NJ

DialIdol has Lakisha, Melinda and Stephanie 1,2,3 and VFTW candidate Antonella 4th.

  • shar

Mad, I still am not sure how the million dollar contract thing works, but I have to assume it takes less sales for the winner because they receive that million dollar credit towards production, promo, etc…don’t you think? I guess Taylor will be “in the money” faster because he won a million dollars towards costs.

I still think the winner, should have the first cd and single. Is this the first year that the winners cd wasn’t released first?

Mad, did you see Lakisha tonight? I liked her from audition and she didn’t disappoint. A star was born tonight and how very cool that this performance was on her daughter’s 4th birthday. I wish her well.

  • jpfan

Not trying to be a downer but a great performance doesn’t make Lakisha a star. She’ s an excellent singer similiar to the 3 divas of Season 3. Is she as good as J Hud or Fantasia. I really don’t know. Her type of singing bores me. Even Fantasia can’t sell CDs

shar…………AI is just coming on now here in L.A. Where is Lakeisha in the order? I am not watching the show yet, but since more than a few have talked so much about her, I would take a peek at her.

  • aek

    madaboutu,

Lakeisha is last. YOu should watch Melinda too, though….both were great!

  • madaboutu

aek………..OK, where does Melinda show up? I heard about the 67 commercials and I can watch two other shows during that time. LOL

  • MaryS-NJ

I guess Taylor will be à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“in the moneyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ faster because he won a million dollars towards costs.

No he didn’t. I won a contract. Everything else is recoupable.

I emailed Steve at the AI board last night to get a contact address for the producers of AI and this is what I got in return in case anyone is interested.
    askfox@fox.com

weelassie, last night I practically had my letter written I was so angry. And today I’m glad I didn’t have the address last night. “What a Difference a Day Makes” I guess. Are you still planning to write? Do you think it will even be read?

  • Tracy

I just checked DialIdol and Lakisha is WAAAAAAY out in front, followed by Melinda and Antonella.

It’s a little over an hour into the voting on the east coast, so it might change, but who knows.

  • shar

jpfan, sadly I think you are right about Lakisha not selling cd’s. I see her more as a Broadway star. Unfortunately AI is about moving units, best singer be damned.

For me Lakisha is better than Mandisa last year, she is more controlled, mandissa hit more than a few bad notes and I think L puts more emotion into her song. When you say diva,I think of the Whitney Houston/Diana Ross type of woman, as much about the attitude as the voice and I frankly don’t see that in Lakisha.

Perhaps it comes later, but for now she seems rather quiet and very nice.

  • madaboutu

MaryS…….I am so glad you won a contract :grin1_ee:

  • dave

Tonight was better but still it was just ok. The girls are definitely stronger as whole than the guys. I think that was a bad decision by TPTB. For the most part AI is sports geared towards females(whats that say about me? UGH). They must draw out the fangirliness out of as many of those females as they can for ratings and votes. Its a lot easier with a strong group of guys. JMO.

  • madaboutu

So dave…………who did you like tonite?

  • shar

Mad, Melinda was somewhere between 7 and 10, sorry,I honestly don’t remember.

I am visiting my son in San Fran in May and we are going to see Taylor at the Warfield.Tickets go on sale in late March. Are you going to get to see Taylor?

  • aek

OK, where does Melinda show up? I heard about the 67 commercials and I can watch two other shows during that time. LOL

Hmmm….Melinda was in the second half, but not exactly sure where she fell. Sorry.

  • madaboutu

shar………..I read a few days ago about your trip and that is so great. To see Taylor and your son in one trip couldn’t be better. I have room and tickets to Pala, but am debating about the Wiltern. It is very close to me, but it depends on the seating. My sis is going with me and she wanted to go to Pala and make a weekend of it and I have a son in San Diego we can stop and see.

  • shar

Ok, I am idoled out for another night.

    Swet dreams all!

  • dave

    madaboutu

I liked LaKisha, Stephanie, Melinda and Sabrina. I liked Leslie for other reasons but thought her song was wrong for her. I like them but I’m not excited about them that much. Time will tell.

  • shar

Mad,fantastic that you wil see Taylor and your son also. It sounds like people were having a blast in Jacksonville tonight.Metta and Baxter, who post quite a lot in the morning went to see him and found that they were staying in the same hotel as Taylor.

Wouldn’t it be something if they went to the hotel lounge and he showed up. They could “cheersie” him in person.

I am out of here,if you watch only one performance on Idol tonight,Lakisha was light years above everyone else. I am not even going to watch the guys next week, life is too short for bad tv.

  • madaboutu

Thanks for the headsup Dave! I will try to catch a couple of them. Right now there is alot of stuff going on after Taylors concert over at Grays. And I am trying to watch the season premiere of Jericho.

  • madaboutu

Taylor fans……..first pic up at Grays, and it’s a beauty!!!!!!

  • weelassie

    Des
I imagine if I get pissed off again like last night, that I will email them. Have no idea if anyone will read it but it would make me feel better:)

  • db

Girls did much better than the guys last night.

  • madaboutu

Lots of reports coming in at Grays………..and……..I got to see Sabrina and Antonella so far on the peeks at AI. Something not right with the song Antonella sang. It seemed off somehow. I can easily watch most of Jericho and still catch glimpses of performances. So many commercials!!!!!!

  • sammy

This looks like season 3 all over again. Lakeisha and Melinda are the divas all over again. Been there, done that. Idol takes a big step backwards. Who is really going to get excited about the divas all over again. What a shame. Season 5 was so, so great.

jpfan, this is so true. I don’t see everybody on the message boards next summer showing the same enthusiasm as this year. I hadn’t thought of this until you said it…

  • Paula

I don’t get it — Antonela is #2 on Dial Idol.

  • Desdemona

Paula, Antonella is VFTW pick. :(

  • Little Boy Blue

Antonella, one of the worse of the great bunch of women, is sure to get to the next round. If Alaina joins her at the expense of Sabrina or Leslie, we’ll know that image trumps talent. But then, this isn’t surprising any more.

  • madaboutu

OK………I managed to see seven of the girls. Out of them, I liked Melinda and Lakeisha alot mostly because they not only have the talent but maturity and you can tell Melinda has had experience onstage. I also liked Jordan and Gina. Unfortunately, none of them will move me to “have” to watch or vote. I think I’m cured……..at least for this season.

  • madaboutu

Pics from Jacksonville paper of Taylor and fans.

  • Lisa

Darn so proud of my hometown girl Melinda I wanna cry, lol. She brought it! Woohoo! Liked Lakisha too, but darn just love Melinda!! She is a lil firecracker, lol. wooooooo!!

  • DogDoc

Okay I just posted on Taylor’s Myspace page. Agggghhhh. I cannot believe I actually posted on Myspace!! No picture of me though and no flashy stuff. Oh yeah – I had to sign up for myspace, but I don’t really have a myspace page and I am not going to take time to make one.

Grumble – grumble – I am going looney tunes.

I only caught the last 15 minutes of Idol tonight. Lakisha was good. I am glad that Fantasia is singing Thursday. I really wanted to watch CSI on Thursday though. Now I have to watch Fantasia and see if VFTW managed to keep Sundance and Antonella in the running.

  • lila

very nice review of Taylor’s concert up at jacksonville.com!

  • lila

its a little hard to find- click on ‘entertainment’ than ‘lifestyles’.

Lisa B. will have the link and quotes up for us later this morning i’m sure!! Just wanted to mention it tonight-happy to see the positive review…:)
