US Weekly is reporting that Nicki Minaj is definitely joining the American Idol judges panel:

Nicki Minaj — and her multiple personas — will be joining Mariah Carey at the judges’ table on American Idol, two sources confirm to Us Weekly exclusively.

“I’m not sure the deal is completely done yet, but yes, she is definitely doing it,” one insider reveals. “A few more slight things to sign off on but it is happening.”

A second source says the “Super Bass” rapper, 29, is “100% confirmed to judge American Idol.” Reps for FOX and Minaj had no comment when contacted by Us.

Ah ha ha ha ha. This is going to be good, considering her propensity for colorful language.  I hope she reigns nothing in. Get your censor button ready, FOX!  Her loose-cannon personality may be an indication that she won’t be afraid to tell it like it is. Or as she sees it. Heh.

Nicki let the cat out of the bag when she announced on twitter that  she was moving around some tour dates to free up the fall.  She teased a “secret” to her fans.

We’ll see what kind of judge she makes when the season begins, but on paper, I think this looks good. She’s current, with a relevant career that’s in full swing. She’ll bring in some younger, more diverse fans to the show, hopefully. Plus she’s totally buzz worthy.

I think that Jimmy should be on the panel. Mariah, Nicki, Jimmy and Keith/Brad.

  • LA Kim

I think MJ said this before, they need a record producer on the panel.

I personally like Lenny Kravitz because he’s done it all. He’s a singer, songwriter, producer, actor, and plays guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and percussion.

His music genre varies which means he has an open mind to all music and the contestants.

Dragon queens and divas? Throwing shade so hard on the gay.

I can’t help but believe that a Dragon Queen would make a good judge what with all that fire-breathing. ;)

The cattiest person Idol has ever had was a guy – Simon!

  • LA Kim

LOL! Well I was fire breathing when I typed that statement :D

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Do really think after picking foul mouthed Nicki Minaj they want “pure”?  LOL!

;) It was my favorite comment of the night! :)

Like I said…I can’t wait for January.  So far Nick Jonas would be the only odd man in this group. I want a strong personality country guy which I am pretty sure we will get.  Nick just doesn’t fit.  I am still having fits over Mariah and Nickki on the same panel.  I think XF and the Voice has been trumped. Only Jonas would bring it down.  I don’t know any teen or tween girls or college girls or guys who are at all in to him.

I think that one problem with 4 judges is the American attention span.  I’m an American and I don’t have what it takes to stay focussed through 4 speeches…bearly 3 sometimes.  Oh, nevermind, I forgot about fast-forward.

I’m all for Lenny Kravitz – need some eye candy to stay interested. Although Nicki will be worth watching for a while.

  • Christopher Auyeung

Omg. I’m so excited. Love her. She’s pretty awesome in her interviews.

  • Indigobunting

Hmmm, I may have to watch Idol more religiously this year; could be interesting!

  • too-cool-for-school

Lame! This sucks. Initially I was liking the never-confirmed idea of a panel with Mariah, Adam and Pharrell. But that makes too much sense, right, Idol? Choosing judges that all have significant talent? I guess it’s nothing new for this show… just another in a long line of whack judges. I will of course give it a shot with the auditions but this definitely feels like it could be the season I finally say goodbye to Idol.

The X Factor panel is looking better and better to me every day, which I guess is saying something.

After watching the Jonas brothers this morning on the Today show, it’s
pretty obvious they still have lots of screaming (young) fans, too.

I saw that, too, wordnerdarchie, and thought they would NEVER quit SCREAMING when the Jonas Bros walked outside! Surprised me they still got that huge of a  reaction.

No Thanks, No Nicki is not pure haha.  But that is not her role.  Nick’s role would be the former teen idol who would pass the torch to the next teen idol.  I think in that role, Nick would have to be “pure”.  This is especially since teen idols themselves are still expected to be “pure”.  At their height, don’t forget that the Jonas Brothers were happy to tell anyone and everyone about their purity rings.

I agree that the Jonas Brothers are not as big as they were in 2007-2008 but they still have a fanbase.  They also have a strong supporter in Ryan Seacrest. I find that he really supports the young male teen idols.  Remember the weird obsession with Bieber in Season 9?  He also really supports 1D, the Jonas Bros, Cody Simpson and even Greyson Chance.  Having Ryan on your side can only help Nick secure a judge’s spot.

Ugh.  Wasn’t sure I wanted to watch the 20 million dollar diva, but now with Minaj…this will surely be the only season out of the 12, I won’t be watching.  Too bad…they could have wowed us, but failed….now it will be all about the judges, instead of the contestants.

“@NICKIMINAJ: Barbz, the surprise is this: tomorrow morning, I’m tweeting the perfume NAME & BOTTLE!!!!!!!! 9amEST!!!!!!! Mmmmuuuaaaahhhh!!!!!!!”

  • blackberryharvest

     Interesting.

  • KendraWills

Umm pure? The biggest tween/teen idol out there is Justin Bieber.

  • Troy Mccoy

I am actually pretty excited about this. I love Nicki and Mariah music and personality. I am also interested to see how they interact. I have a feeling they will definitely be better then Steven and JLO. It will be interesting to see the type of contestants they like and how they will critique. They definitely have to get rid of Randy from the panel now. They need an interesting guy to balance these two out and I really dont think the Jonas boy is it. Brad with these two would be interesting, he has a great personality.

IMO TPTB are trying to model the new Idol panel on the panel that’s on The Voice:

    Mariah Carey = Christina Aguilera
Nicki Minaj = Cee Lo Green
Brad Paisely/Keith Urban = Blake Shelton
    ? = Adam Levine

In that vein all their choices are good ones so far, now who should fill the current rocker/band frontman Adam Levine type role?

May I suggest Haley Williams of Paramore? She’s young, hip and has a pretty large tween/teen following and she’s a rocker which means she definitely won’t be intimidated by 2 batsh!t crazy divas. She’s also very intelligent and articulate, arguably more so than the other teen idol type artists. Of course that will mean that there’ll be 3 women on the panel but why not? It’ll make Idol’s panel stand out from the other 2 panels.

This story could be a pile of baloney – we’ve all heard of columnists making things up but apparently Adam Lambert has confirmed to an Australian interviewer that Idol has spoken to him and as far as he knows, he’s still in the running. He’s doing a promo tour Downunder and is probably back in the US early next week.

I wonder how many people Idol has thrown feelers out to? They must have contacted 10-20 people about their availability in the Spring. Maybe they said “If we were to ask you, would you be free….?)

No wonder so many names. Unless they get an interview or the meeting, though, it’s just a feeler.

    Exactly my list, fanttoo1!

You do know that it is thanks to competition (finally) from the likes of The Voice that the FOX execs have been sweating it out to with the banks get the highest profile line up possible. I can see folks at The Voice trumping the AI line-up and remember chemistry counts ;)

  • Max

New line up which Burnett is working on right now will give the show the attention it deserves and the ratings to stay at the top (throughout the season).
