Melanie Amaro & Elton John – Superbowl Pepsi Ad Sneak Peek (VIDEO)

Pepsi has released details and a video sneak peek of Melanie Amaro’s Superbowl ad.  The Pepsi ad is part of her prize package–that included a 5 million dollar recording contract–for winning the inaugural season of the X Factor.

We also get a preview of a very modern and dance floor-reader rendition of “Respect” from Melanie.  Is this the direction L.A Reid and Simon Cowell plan to take her in?

The legendary pop star, Elton John, is featured the 60s spot:

The new ad titled “King’s Court” features Melanie Amaro, THE X FACTOR 2011 winner, singing for multi Grammy-winning music legend Sir Elton John who plays a “king of rock” in the commercial. The ad was produced by TBWA/Chiat Day and directed by Noam Murro. During the commercial, Amaro performs a song she recorded exclusively for the ad, a contemporized version of RESPECT, by Otis Redding, and made popular by the “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin. Pepsi fans who “Shazam” the spot during the big game will be able to view Amaro’s music video for RESPECT.

Set in a rock-fantasy version of medieval times, the 60 second commercial features Melanie Amaro performing in front of a “royal court of rock,” including Elton John’s character, the King. The ad establishes Pepsi as the brand for people who are not afraid to take a chance, raise their voice and give it their all. It also highlights the fact that Pepsi has an irresistible taste worth challenging a king for. With epic Pepsi scale and a big dose of humor, the commercial ends with a twist and the tagline, “Where there’s Pepsi, There’s Music”.

“Pepsi wanted to make me ‘King for a Day’ on Super Bowl Sunday. How could I possibly pass that up?” said Sir Elton John.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would be starring in a Pepsi Super Bowl commercial, following in the footsteps of some of music’s biggest legends,” said Melanie Amaro.  “Winning THE X FACTOR has changed my life,” she continued.

Pepsi will be sponsoring a slate of pre-game concerts that include its annual pre-Super Bowl party on Friday, February 3, featuring musical performances by One Republic and Melanie Amaro. Plus, the CMT Crossroads Pepsi Super Bowl Fan Jam will take place Saturday, February 4 with Carrie Underwood and Steven TylerRead the full press release.

Go Melanie! Looks very high budget!

  • Anonymous

Looks like it could really be fun. I like the fairly tale aspect.

  • GS61

Maybe it’s me, but I just don’t get it. Two OTT Divas in ridiculous costumes.
(Oh and that XFactor trophy is really ugly too!)

  • Tess

Didn’t watch X-Factor so my only exposure to Melanie are snippets I’ve seen of a few performances, a single interview on Live with Kelly, and now the sneak peek.  I must say that I don’t see any “IT” in Melanie.  She sure doesn’t even begin to float my boat.  I can see TBTB working hard to cram her down our necks but I just can’t see them succeeding…and I’m gathering without Elton this Pepsi commercial may not have even become a blip.  We’ll see how the SuperBowl Commercial raters judge this one…it looks a little foolish to me.

  • Tinawina

Why am I not surprised she’s doing a remix of Aretha Franklin? I smell Simon’s involvement. LOL

Look forward to seeing how this turns out.

  • Judy Purcell

Looks like it’s going to be a fun commercial !

  • Jason Scott

    I don’t get it either. I mean…a remix of Aretha…really, Simon?!?!

Seems like it’s a fun commercial and Melanie sounded great. I’m not seeing any downsides to having your voice featured in a Super Bowl commercial with the one and only Sir Elton. It just seems like a silly, fun commercial and Melanie gets to show what she’s made of. It’s a win/win situation.

OMG, I already love the snippet! “Once Upon A Time” & “Grimm” are my new favorite TV shows right now. So this lalalah land commercial I DIG! Melanie’s looking great. I watched all of her interviews post-X-Factor and I find her very articulate with a touch of Kelly’s bubbly personality. The more I know about her, the more I like her.

The commercial looks like it could be fun, but if this cover of “Respect” is Melanie’s actual first single, I think she is in trouble. How is that supposed to establish her as an original artist? Does Simon not remember what happened when they gave Lee the U2 cover as his coronation song?

  • Trina

I havent heard this referred to as her single at all. Anything I’ve read just said she recorded a cover for the commercial.  I too dont see any downside to the commercial. Seems like harmless fun she’ll get some major exposure from and she looks great. Nothing wrong with being a diva YMMV..and Elton is a LEGEND. Most up and coming artists would likely kill to work with him in any capacity.

eta: Just read Mathew Broderick is going to star in a Ferris Bueller Superbowl ad for Honda. Way too excited about that one too!

LMAO ok the FB ad is all over Twitter. Freaking hysterical. Any child of the 80’s should love it.

When I first heard the concept of the commercial I was worried It seemed strange and stupid but then looking at the clip I changed my mind. It does seem like it would be cute and fun. It’s different than what I imagined her commercial to be I initially thought it would be her walking around singing but this is elaborate and had a theme.

Oh and the trophy is real stupid looking I wouldn”t have shown it in public. They could of done better. I wonder if American Idol still gives out trophies there’s weren’t much better either.

  • Tinawina

It’s supposed to be available for download, but I don’t think it’s an actual single.

I was just laughing at the choice of song because it is so Simon. Of course he would have her sing a cover of some diva classic soul song. But the commercial could be a hoot, so I’m looking forward to seeing it.

So I guess we’re ‘re-shelving’ the accent and going back to the ‘bubbly american’ accent then, huh?

you know, I’m just gonna be myself around him (Elton)

So much for ‘being herself’ around Elton LOL

Also, Ironic, that they show the song “Respect” some respect by ‘enhancing’ the song by adding electonica and a dance beat, turning it into a vacuous, thumping rendition ……

  • fuzzywuzzy

Not keen on the remix of this classic song, but then again, I’m not the target demographic.  lol

  • Brittany Keener

lolll I was just about to say….I see we are back to no accent.

  • Anonymous has it up on their site for sale and it is referred to as a single on there

  • MikhailXO

Yes, nice vocals…but it all ends there.

  • MikhailXO

I don’t think Melanie has as many options as one might think. How is she really marketable? Aretha…maybe not, but not sure what else could be done with her. Voice over work maybe?

  • MikhailXO

Yes…the now MIA caribbean accent only worked for that one crucial week when Simon feared Melanie wasn’t being herself and had to reconnect, or ‘connect’ with the audience….hence the chanting and speaking in tongues. But now that she won she can revert back to her previous programming…

that commercial looks so epic for sure . looking forward to downloading the song on February 2nd and seeing the ad on February 5th.

  • Anonymous

Unlike other winners and losers, Melanie doesn’t have to worry about earning a living.

  • Mauricio Arizmendi

The song will be avaliable for download on iTunes midnight? Imean normally Amazon releases the singles on thursday …I hope so..

  • Anonymous

Ohhh so cool for her!  And that clip of that song sounds great.  I was worried when I heard she was doing Respect but not any more.  I hope her album is hot. I would love to see her succeed.

  • Anonymous

Nothing is wrong with her accent or lack there of. You can still hear it.  I have friends from the carribean and other places and their accent fades in and out too, depending on the situation or who they are talking too.  So I don’t know why people are making it out to be a big deal.

  • Trish Martin

I agree.  I did watch XFactor and she is NOT one I wanted to win.  When Simon let her go the first time, well he should have just left it at that.

  • Anonymous

If this commercial doesn’t boost the sale of this song, she’s toast and done lol! What a stupid thing to do by making her sing a cover song for this commercial.
This is what I’ve been saying about Simon everytime. He just doesn’t get it.
I think he just wasted a huge opportunity by not releasing an original single for Melanie and using it for this commercial. How does he expect this to jumpstart her career like they’re saying?
Good luck to her because she really needs it! SMDH!

  • stargazed

Ahhhhhh….. the forever fabulous Elton. I know nothing about Melanie as I couldn’t/wouldn’t watch the show.  After a few episodes, I moved on.  It’ll be interesting to see if she can make an impression on people like me who have no idea who she is.

  • Kirsten

the cynic in me thinks Pepsi added Elton to the gig because they didn’t think that the X-Factor winner was a big enough draw for a Superbowl commercial.

It will be interesting to see if the commercial is a prize next yer.

I see Elton continues his love/hate relationship with singing competition shows.
