Mariah Carey Invited the American Idol Top 3 to Sing Backups On Her Album

American Idol judge, Mariah Carey has invited the Top 3, Candice Glover, Kree Harrison and Angie Miller to sing backups on an unnamed song, according to an interview this morning with Ryan Seacrest radio:

“I was in the studio with Candice, Kree, and Angie last night because selfishly, I wanted to get some background vocals from them on another record as I did my mentoring moment…and just give them a glimpse…I said, ‘I’m wearing a totally different hat right now, this is me the producer, that goes quickly through the part but we have to be precise,’ but the girls only had a couple hours and I didn’t want to push them, but it was a great experience…so they did [backup] for a different song which I will not reveal the title yet.”

That mentoring moment would make a great video package for American Idol, wouldn’t it? Hm.

Oh man, this is awesome for those three. I want Mariah to stick around and do more of this stuff next season!

  • EliteHalien

Very gracious of Mariah. She absolutely didn’t need to do it, but the fact that she did really shows her connection to these ladies IMO. Classy move Ms Carey.

No doubt that it was a valuable moment for the girls to see Mariah’s studio process.

  • ladymctech

This is a nice plus for the three ladies and for the show. It gives the top contestants something to look forward to. Thanks, Mariah!!!

  • Tusk

Will this mean some kind of $$ for them, or will it just be a resume item?

  • Larc

I think Mariah will pay them, probably the going rate for backup singers.

  • Eilonwy

Back-up singers usually get a payment for their services but no royalties, same as session musicians.

With any luck, it’s a nice little video package, and ideally it’s a story Carey will tell during her album promo that’ll give the Top 3 a little PR boost for their future albums. Either way, it’s not enormous in impact, but it’s nice — thus a welcome relief in a mean-spirited and contentious season.

  • Thomas Murr

Wow congratulations! You get to sing back up vocals on a song performed by a has been who nobody who is not black and under the age of 30 knows about.

  • Wfish88

Very nice thing for Mariah to do- Nicki would prob never colab with any of the idols. But Mariah prob did this only because of PR for her albums- the song prob won’t be on album.

I’m 18 and I know who Mariah is. You’d be an idiot not to. She’s one of the all-time greatest selling artists ever, and has one of the most widely acclaimed technical voices in current history.

  • db987

Last year during her return to AI Steven asked Lauren to do the same so she is on one of his songs on his last album singing backup. At that time I remember someone on here said it best this is not for money or really any meaningful fame but is equivalent to a day at Disneyland for a five year old. I am sure they will remember it there whole lives. It was a nice thing for Mariah to do.

  • Jenny Williams

Just something about that Racial Jab. There is absolutely no way Mariah Carey has sold 200,000,000 Million records to Black people alone.

  • girlygirl

This is nice of Mariah, but it will have no impact on any of the 3’s careers.

  • taylor

Nicki’s latest collaboration/video project is Tap Out. Nicki’s part:

Don’t let me tell ya twice, already told you once
    (Eat that p*ssy)
Who got that baddest p*ssy on the planet?
D-Boyz love me, they don’t understand it
    Ooooooooooooooooooh, deep throat
Million dollar p*ssy might pounce on that ass.

Maybe Nicki could bring in the top three girls to do the Ooooooooooooh part! lol

  • EB

Ugh @ Nicki. Mariah wins style points for letting the girls collaborate with her and for her song being much better than whatever Minaj is working on by the sound of it.

  • Thomas Murr

Africa has like a billion people.

  • EB

Even if it is video-package fodder, I believe she does care about the contestants in her own way. Maybe even knows the times that she hasn’t been helpful as a judge and sees what a tense, weird, exhausting season this has been for all. Kudos to her for at least trying to be nice and do something redemptive and positive.

  • Girard Huckins

Sounds like she waited until Amber was gone to make that offer. Smart lady.

  • chillj

Well, GOOD for you, Mariah! Take the high road and make Nicki look really, really, sh***y.

  • chillj

Hey, I would love to do it if asked. It is for resume building. Besides, it is a nice offer; at least they have work and potential buzz.

  • chillj

I don’t think it is a big cd market.

  • justamccreerian

    That was nice of her.

  • Miz

I’m wondering if all the judges are doing mentoring with the girls this week on the Judges’ choice song.

This is really nice of Mariah to give the girls this experience. It will be a lasting memory for them.

  • Larc

It may impact how they feel about themselves at this early stage, though. That’s important, IMO.

  • abbysee

Somewhere Zoanette, Curtis Finch, and Papa Peaches are thinking ‘there’s hope for me yet! Lol! Nah….

This is a wonderful gesture. This is yet another reason I like Mimi. She’s all ballgowns and glitter, but all heart too.

  • abbysee

Maybe not in the trajectory of their careers, but who knows what little snippet of information, or something that might have clicked for them that might be useful to them in the future. I wouldn’t discount the importance of being with Mariah Carey in the studio.

  • Pippygirl

You know what would work for me? If Nicki and Mariah start trying to outdo each other helping these three girls.

  • fuzzywuzzy

After everything I’ve seen and heard from Nicki, I would rather she have as little influence as possible on these final 3 contestants.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Yep. A “two-fer”. lol Seriously, this was a nice gesture by Mariah and she certainly didn’t have to do it.

  • Vetle Hovland

Starting to really like Mariah, even as a judge too (mostly because she stuck behind Candice the entire way). (:

  • chillj

No, she did not have to. (But you hafta admit, it does make Nicki look….) I think its great.

  • Axxxel

Just some heartwarming experience they will talk about during interviews and during familynights with their grandchildren and /or nieces and nephews…

  • MyDailyComment

wouldn’t be good PR if she didn’t use the song..

  • MyDailyComment

She could show them how to properly use autotune.

  • EB

It really is pretty cool that they and their vocals get to be on her album. It could have been something lame like ooh, you can sit in the studio and listen while Mariah records her song!! :P But to be really included.. that is exciting I’m sure.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I’m sure that’s not lost on Mariah. ;)

  • Cory Patrick

What about Amber?! Actually, I feel like Nicki is the one who wants to put her in her pocket for keepsakes lol.

  • Cory Patrick

    WOW Papa Peaches, lmaoo

  • mtlfan2

    I like invested judges

  • Kariann Hart

It gave them a chance to do something they probably never thought was possible. I think it was a nice gesture from Mariah.

  • Kariann Hart

This is trash. None of the TOP 3 would want to be a part of this garbage. They are just too classy. Make this woman get far, far away from Idol.

  • fuzzywuzzy

    Candice Glover ?@CandiceAI12 13h
what? idk what ur talking about lolRT @H———: @CandiceAI12 Tell me about that song you’re in on Mariah’s album ;)
