    LOVE IT!

holy falsetto! It sounds promising, but it’s hard to really get a grasp of songs from such short snippets — I’m hoping he’s going to perform this song at his show Thursday (although it would be an acoustic version since it’s an acoustic gig)

And would they just officially announce this as the single already, pretty please? thanks, love me :)

  • Anonymous

That sounds really, really nice!  With a falsetto like that, I am so glad that Kris is making use of it more.  Can’t wait for videos from tomorrow night, and to hear the entire song, and for a release date, and an adds date, and…so much good stuff to look forward to!

  • Anonymous

Love what I’m hearing! Shiny falsetto is shiny.<3

I hope this song is on Kris's set list tomorrow. Along with a few others that I'm anxious to hear.

Snippets are difficult  bc you never know if it’s representative BUT I LOVE THIS!! Want to hear the full song. Please just release it now!

Love it as well!! It’s good to see you write-up about such topic. I enjoyed reading this post. Thanks for allocation.

I know it`s just a snippet, but it sounds great, very radio ready. I think I already like it more than I did The Last Goodbye and Better than I Know Myself. It sounds very him. Good job Kris

SQUEEEE!! love what i’m hearing! pretty falsetto is pretty :)
Can’t wait to hear the whole song!!
That would be so fitting for ‘Vision of Love’ to be released on Valentine’s day :))

  • Anonymous

Hmmm, I will wait until tomorrow night to hear the full song.
It will be acoustic, but better than just a 30 sec snippets.
O geez, I’m nervous. I hope I like the new song ( songs) . LOL.

  • Anonymous

Well I’m sold, someone get this on iTunes!

  • luly

I love what we heard so far. I hope this song will be a big hit.

I am both jealous and extremely happy for Kris’s LA fans. This song really does sound so Kris. I just know I will be up all night tomorrow waiting for the videos.

  • rocklet1

OMG!!! FREAKING KRIS ALLEN.. i think the falsetto is magnificent.. can’t wait for the full studio recording. After this i will be waiting on my girl Allison Iraheta to put out a song as well..

  • Anonymous

OMFG! This sounds amazing! I can’t stop listening to it! Daayummm!

  • http://twitter.com/lufflyness Jenna

Very pretty song but weirdly enough I think his voice came across stronger in the remix.

  • Anonymous

OK, I’m no longer freaked out by the whoa-ohs (like I was after hearing the tiny snippet we got last week).  :)  Reserving judgment until I hear the whole song, but I think it’s promising.

  • http://twitter.com/kevonlie Kevin Lee

    can’t…. stoppppp

  • Anonymous

‘Stands for vision of love u ah u ah’.. This is bad, and his voice sounds strained.

  • Anonymous

I really like this and can’t wait to hear the whole thing. I agree with everyone who said that the song is very ‘Kris’. It’s different from what we’ve heard from him before, but it feels like a natural fit.

Moreover, this snippet sounds like it would fit in with pop radio, but I don’t hate it! Very few songs lately have managed this feat.

Now all I have to hope is that it ends up on iTunes Australia …. someday …….

  • almondean88

Kris’s voice sounds so strong and sweet.  I can’t wait for this song to be released.  Perfect for Valentine’s Day!

  • aaa sss

better than ‘that’ OVerrated Adam Lambert new single…whats that song?…..

  • Valentin432

I was not expecting this at all as a first single.
The falsetto is front and center, should be tough to sing this song live but it’s pretty in the recorded version.

  • http://twitter.com/therealmikas Mikas

didn’t like the end of the snipet (‘
whooooa-oooohs’ part) but the chorus sounds promising.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, it’s nice (from the snippet).  But it will be a bitch to sing live.

  • Anonymous

That falsetto is PAINFUL. The song sounds catchy but that is embarrassing. Kris is pushing his voice past what he is capable of.

  • Anonymous

I’m no good at snippets and this doesn’t sound like the final mix, so I’ll just have to wait.  So excited, though, and we’re getting clooossssser!

    how do u define “PUSH”

  • Anonymous

Really pretty falsetto – I didn’t know Kris had it in him.  However, it has that “dance beat” which is not my favorite sound, so it looks like they’re going to try hard for CHR airplay.  Now it’s just a matter if radio likes it & plays it.

  • Anonymous

Kinda hard to tell. Sounds like this snippet might be the last 30 seconds of the song?

  • mmb

Can’t tell much about a song from a 30 sec snippet but the snippet sounds, to my ears, like a discarded U2 song from the mid 80s ( that guitar sound is very 80s U2). Not impressed by the snippet, but maybe the whole song will have a different feel ( as is often the case). Agree that he is really pushing the falsetto. Liked LLWD so maybe I’ll like the full version of this

I really like the new leaked demo, “My Weakness”.  Sounds promising.

  • Anonymous

I like this a lot more. May be Vision Of Love isn’t the single afterall.

  • sf3456

I like the dance mix version better.

  • Anonymous

VOL is already listed everywhere so it’s the single. “my weakness” is just a leaked demo. We don’t know whether it’s new or old lol!

  • Anonymous

Hmmm, I really like the leaked My Weakness! Better than I like Stand (for the Vision of Love), but then snippets are tough to judge!  It will be interesting to see what they play tonight.

  • Anonymous

LMFAO! This is just a 30 sec snippet of probably, a 3-4 minutes song lol! And it sounds good so far, for a 30sec snippet. AWM, anyone?

  • Anonymous

I was listening to this snippet against the PSA snippet and I’m wondering if this is the demo from last summer.  There are no layered vocals on this one like on the other one.  Oh well, just have to wait and see I guess.

  • Anonymous

Hope everyone going to the concert at the Mint tonight has a great time!  Hoping for videos & pictures….. (hint hint)  :)

  • Anonymous

So glad to hear new music . . .finally!

The snippet sounds promising. I agree with another poster that the “whoas” sound better in the demo than snippet we heard in the commercial. Right now, I prefer the remix but I am anxious to hear the whole song.

As for My Weakness, I like vibe of the song and the chorus. Kris seems to be going for an upbeat feel of the album from what we heard so far.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UITYTUSGL7IK7WLFFDXXRYP7GA Falfor

Momma always said if you can’t say something nice, don’t say a thing at all, because no one cares what you really think either way. You know, equality and opportunity for all should not have limits to those you prefer. There is nothing embarrassing about this song at all, and those of us with open ears actually like it.

  • ryuryu10

I don’t think this will be a big hit.. Sounds outdated IMO. I’m not sure people/the media still care about him. He seems to have ZERO buzz.

  • Anonymous

The trouble with musical snippets is it’s like hearing a little piece of a story but that piece is heard “out of context” meaning you don’t know the story before and after the snippet. With out the lead in and follow up, the snippet is just hanging out there on it’s own. The listener is not taken on a journey either lyrically, emotionally or aurally. So it’s hard to know if I like the story and I think Kris is good with telling musical stories. All that rambling aside I really like Kris’ voice and I think I’ll like this song when I hear it all. I think the falsetto sounds good.  Fingers crossed for his new music.

YAAAAY! I can’t wait to read tweets from the show tonight!

  • Kirsten

Ha! It’s been a long wait, but it’s great to start hearing the song that we first heard about last summer. I think I’m going to like this song. It’s very Kris.  I can’t wait until we hear the full song and start getting some firm dates.

One never knows from snippets, but between this and the re-mix, I think this song is going to be good and I love the hook.

I also like that “My Weakness” song. I’m a sucker with a song with bounce. It better be on the album.

  • Anonymous

I was afraid I would like the remix more than the original, but as I hear more and more of it I think I’m going to like this a lot! It actually seems to still have some of the beat or rhythm of the remix (if that makes any sense!). I think the falsetto sounds great.

  • Anonymous

Kirsten, I agree.  This song was previewed last July & Jive/RCA have stuck with this song.  They must have gotten some encouraging feedback. So they must feel it is a good song that has the potential to be a hit for Kris and the label. If it wasn’t they would have moved on.

  • Anonymous

My ears are pretty open, and I really can’t say what I think about the song.  Snippets rarely give any good context to judge by. I’d agree with Gangreen in that the falsetto sounds a bit forced, but maybe once the full song is released the build up to that will alleviate that feeling. Which is why snippets should be 60 seconds instead of 30. 30 isn’t enough to get a feeling on the song.

  • Anonymous

Oh I really like My Wekaness (even though I’m not fan of whistling in songs). Hope this makes the album :)

  • Anonymous

I long ago gave up trying to predict what radio will play.  Half the stuff that goes up the charts leaves me scratching my head wondering “who could possibly like this.” Then you get people who disappear for a while only to come back with strong play. Who knows what the radio gods will decide until it happens.

  • OffLeash

I’ve always liked Kris as a person, but not enough as an artist to buy his CD, but I really loved the remix, and the pop version sounds just as good. Everything works, falsetto and all. I want it. When is it available on iTunes? <3

  • Anonymous

I cant stop listening to the 30 sec. snippet. I love it.
Oh and BTW, non-remix >>>>> remix.

  • Tess

So Kris is standing out in this enormous expanse of desert and a Mary Magdalene type image slowly appears as he is wondering how to get himself back to civilization…and he is re-energized and obviously saved.  Sorry…just had to go there……

Can’t tell much from the snippet since I only heard a dozen words, a drum beat, and a lot of whoa-whoas or was it waa-waas.  Haven’t listened to the remix so I am not privy to words and lyrics.  I think I will reserve judgment until I hear the whole song.  Has he announced any dates yet or does everyone think that will come at his gig tonight?

Now…back to figuring out a desert video for this song.

  • Kirsten

I’d agree with Gangreen in that the falsetto sounds a bit forced, but
maybe once the full song is released the build up to that will alleviate
    that feeling.

They’ve also compressed the crap out of that snippet, so it’s not helping. You can hear that same bit in the remix and the falsetto totally works there (IMO).  The extremes suffer when you compress.

  • Anonymous

I thought so too. It’s not too far from the remix like I thought it would which is a really good sign! Go Kris! And oh, “MYWEAKNESS” is dope and seems to have been written for album #2 but it’s registered, so who knows. Kris’ songs that get registered before his album is released are never on the album.

  • Anonymous

I like it.  Based on this snippet, the remixed version stuck pretty close to the original melody and intent.  In comparison to this, the snippet that’s used in the PSA doesn’t do justice to the tone of the song.

My Weakness is also a very good song.  Since Kris’ co-writer is the one who leaked it, that doesn’t give a lot of hope that it will be on the album.  That’s a shame, it’s a very fun song.

  • Anonymous

Yep, which is just another reason I dislike snippets.

  • Anonymous

I was listening to this snippet against the PSA snippet and I’m wondering if this is the demo from last summer.  There are no layered vocals on this one like on the other one.  Oh well, just have to wait and see I guess.

I’m glad that it wasn’t just me, who noted that the snippets don’t sound alike.  This one sounds more stripped down, and this sounds weird, but it’s closer to what’s used in the remix.  They could be different parts of the song, or like you said, this one is the demo version.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WIHKL34XDORTS2UZP4SWUUTG3U randi

I’m surprised by all the leaks of Kris’ music.  During his first album there was absolutely nothing and now we’re getting all these demo leaks.  I’m sure it’s to try and drive interest but sadly it doesn’t seem like anyone outside the idol bubble cares.

I don’t hold out a lot of hope for Kris’ sophmore album honestly.  Not because of his talent, he’s amazingly talented and I actually like his CD overall better than most Idol debuts but he just doesn’t seem to connect to a broader audience than his core fans from Idol.

I’d love to be wrong but I think Kris’ album is going to be a disappointment saleswise.

  • Anonymous

I don’t think this will be a big hit.. Sounds outdated IMO. I’m not sure people/the media still care about him. He seems to have ZERO buzz.

A lot of people here have commented on the songs, even those who don’t like it or him, so at least some people care.  But more importantly, this is a song that some PDs and DJs seemed to like when they heard it last July.  At the time Kris had been out of the public eye for a while, but the snippet was good enough to get them to tweet about the song.  For me, that’s very promising, and means even more than whether or not any of us posts about Kris.

  • Anonymous

I love the snippet so far.  It’s interesting that someone compared it to U2 since they are some of Kris’s big influences.  I love the falsetto and I guess we will just have to wait and see if he has any problem singing it live.  I know he’s used falsetto live before (Paranoid Android cover <3) and he was amazing.  I also love My Weakness!  Wow, how many songs does this guy have in him.  We want them all!

As far as radio goes, who knows?  Kris does have very little buzz right now and this could hurt him in that area.  It's going to take a push from RCA which hopefully he'll get.  I hope he does well but even if he doesn't get that big hit, I know that he'll always make music that I'll want to listen to.  Love his voice!

  • Anonymous

I like the snippet but need to hear the full song. I LOVED the remix. This sounds different than the portion of VOL used in the PSA so I’m curious what the final version will sound like.  Wasn’t this file marked that it wasn’t the final master?  I’m so confused, lol.

I love the falsetto. Kris has had this song for almost a year now so I’m sure he’s confident singing this live by now.

That new demo is great, too, it caught me from the first listen.  Hoping it makes the album.

  • luly

I love the new leaked demo.

  • Anonymous

That’s the where the fun begins, IMO.  Because none of us know until the album hits the market.  Right now?  It’s all speculation and armchair quarterbacking.

I think there’s more interest than Kris gets credit for.  Some PDs have heard snippets and they seemed to like them.  That’s not a definitive statement or anything, but it indicates that Kris and RCA aren’t working in a vacuum like some in our bubble would suggest.

So far, I’ve enjoyed what I’ve heard.  It seems bouncy and fun, but with substance and feeling.  It feels like it’s going to be a well-balanced album.

I think Kris is on the right path.  But we have to wait and see.  We’re just reading the tea leaves at the moment.

  • Anonymous

I’m sure it’s to try and drive interest but sadly it doesn’t seem like anyone outside the idol bubble cares.

The coverage that the remix version received would disprove that theory.   As well as the thumbs up that the song has already received from Clear Channel executives.

And even though it’s not beyond labels to leak demos, in this case, it was a mistake by the managers of the djs who remixed VOL, that lead to that song leaking out, but in the end, that was a good thing. In the case of “My Weakness” it’s the other co-writers of the song who posted it on Soundcloud. If the song isn’t on the album, I don’t think that RCA or Kris would be too happy that it has been posted. Artists never like leaks, and most writers dislike them more, because with leaks, it’s harder to get other singers to record a song. But, these co-writers are fairly new, and they are trying to showcase their work.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

I really really like My Weakness.

The snippet is cool, but y’all know how I feel about snippets. I will wait for the whole thing.

  • http://twitter.com/dy7764 dy77

Love, love, love. (And I love the remix album as well). And the newly leaked My Weakness is amazing! I hope it will make the album too. Of course, from hearing the lyrics already via the dance remix, we know the song has an uplifting vibe.

Kris uses falsetto quite a bit – from Falling Slowly to his mashup of Everybody Wants to Rule the World with The Way You Make Me Feel where his falsetto duets with Andrew’s guitar.

  • Anonymous

The whistling makes that song.  Very catchy.  I could see myself bopping down the street with that as my background music, LOL!

  • mimi

Adding love for My Weakness!  My thoughts on the snippet-vs-remix-vs-psa… the vocals are definitely the same for the snippet and the remix.  I never could reconcile his vocals on the psa with the remix.  So, I’m guessing the psa used a demo or another remix and the snippet is the final version.  At least I hope that’s the case because I definitely prefer the snippet to the psa.

  • http://www.facebook.com/david.i.lin David I-Chen Lin

AMAZING! Of course we have to hear the full song. But I’m already loving everything about this song~ the pretty falsetto, the nice melody, the message of the lyrics. Can’t wait!

  • CircadianDomination

I still think that the PSA was the end of the song with the start of the first verse chopped on to the end.

As for this snippet: the “woah-uh-oh”s definitely fit much better. It sounds fairly Script-ish, with all of the falsetto, but it’s a little bit more fun than their stuff. Will it hit on the radio? Who knows. But, at this point, I think it has a better shot than TLG or BTIKM ever did.

  • Anonymous

I was surprised to read some comments about a “strained voice” because I don’t hear that at all.
‘My Weakness” sounds great but I fear this is not going to be on album #2; how come the co-writer would leak it if it was?

  • Tess

But selling just to established fans and only having interest within a fanbase doesn’t always translate to the real world.  We all saw that Adam Lambert didn’t burn up I-tunes or sell great numbers of his single when it was “all about the fans” and Adam has a lot more buzz then Kris.  Sure it doesn’t prove anything over the long haul but it is important for anyone who wants to be a success to market themselves and create interest.

Kris hasn’t done much of anything to keep his name out there so it will be interesting, like David Cook who wasn’t able to do it, to see if he can bring back those who loved him the first time around.  Obviously Adam has been finding it rough going and he has been promoting himself pretty hard.  Not saying either one of these guys have “failed” since neither have released their album…just saying its a dog eat dog world out there and like Kelly has proven this time around you have to work at it 24/7 to get good results.

  • http://www.facebook.com/david.i.lin David I-Chen Lin

Lol whoever said the falsetto was strained or painful, either they have never heard a falsetto before or they need some ear checks

  • ryuryu10

I’m talking about the real world. He has had only one radio hit song which peaked in April 2010. His followup singles didn’t really sold well. I haven’t seen any major entertainment site mentioning his 2nd album as one of the most anticipated albums of 2012.

  • HappyDaisy

The falsetto reminds me of David A’s Falling Stars song which seemed tough to sing live.  Hopefully Kris can pull it off live.

Don’t understand the trend of male singers doing falsetto like this. Guess I’ll blame Pat Monahan of Train.

Have a couple of Kris’ songs, am probably going to buy his album this time.  Want to support him.  When Cook’s (my fave) album was released last year, Kris gave a shout out on Twitter.  Whether he was told to do it or not, I liked it and pledged to support Kris’ work.  :)

  • Anonymous

After listening to My Weakness for like the seventh time in a row, if RCA has decided that this song won’t make the album they really need to rethink that decision.  This song is hot, and it is an immediate attention grabber.

  • CircadianDomination

Or, you need good, creative promotion for singles that people are willing to buy, and radio is willing to play. TLG was just an awful choice for Cook, and while the jury is still out on BTIKM, it doesn’t appear to be getting either.

If this song is able to get radio play, than who cares how little Kris promotes himself? If this song fails to get radio play, then who cares how much Kris promotes himself?

  • OffLeash

Your doom and gloom is a little premature IMO. I wasn’t a fan of Kris before, but the Vision of Love remix and the snippet of the pop version changed my mind, and I’ll be among the new buyers of Kris music. I doubt I’ll be the only one once this song hits radio. It’s a killer track.

  • Anonymous

If this song is able to get radio play, than who cares how little Kris promotes himself? If this song fails to get radio play, then who cares how much Kris promotes himself?

I agree with your basic premise, but a song and artist need both promotion and airplay.  Often, you can’t get the airplay without the promotion.  BTIKM is showing that it’s not that simple or easy, but a song that just passed it, Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” is showing that a song can skyrocket based on promotion, and it’s popularity in other countries.

Who knows whether or not Kris will geet airplay, or how easy it will be.  As you said, it’s just not about being visible in the public eye.

  • mimi

Regarding all the “straining” falsetto comments, I think the problem is that the snippet cuts in mid-falsetto, which is weird.  If you listen to the remix the falsetto progresses naturally and sounds great.

  • Anonymous

Somebody help meeeeeeeee! I’m going crazy over a snippet and “my weakness”, lol! I can’t stop listening!

  • Anonymous

Ultimately, its going to be the radio PD’s who will decide if this songs is worthy of being added to their rotation. The comments from dj’s from the preview back in July seems very encouraging. Even if kris has little buzz as long as this song gets a fair shot on radio’s playlist, then hopefully those outside the Idol bubble will have a chance to hear the song. Although we have’nt heard all of the tracks on his upcoming album, I think this song is an excellent choice to be next single and I can’t think of any other scenario better than this.

  • http://twitter.com/HaleysShindig HaleysShindig

Kris is constantly using social networking to promote himself and has appeared at a few events lately. I’m sure that as the time comes closer for him to launch his single, we will see more of him. That is SOP for a major recording label artist, they do promotional spots/tours to promote their music. I have no doubt that his management team will do its job when the time comes.

  • madeformusic

Right now I don’t worry about airplay and sales, I just enjoy all the goods that we have/will got today. I love the snippet of VOL (it’s better than the psa) and My Weakness. The only thing that I might worry today is will My Weakness be on the album or not (it’s better be!).

  • Anonymous

if My Weakness doens’t make the album, it tells me a lot about the quality of the other songs. It might not be accurate but we’ll see :)

  • Anonymous

Or bonus track! Please, music gods, hear our prayer!

  • CircadianDomination

I agree that a song needs promotion, but does it really need “self-promotion?” “Keeping your name out there” is overrated, imo. If RCA pushes VOL to radio and gets play, a good video is sent to VH1, and they find some other creative ways to promote the song (a la WDKY commercial), then Kris will be fine. *Harder than it sounds*

Because, honestly, there wasn’t much out there in the mainstream about Kelly during her recording period, other than the coverage of a few leaks. Of course, she’s Kelly, and radio will welcome her with open arms. But, it’s just proof that radio and promotion from the label can cure time off.

  • Anonymous

Kris always seems very pleasant, like vanilla ice cream.  Wouldn’t say no to it, but wouldn’t make a special trip to the store for it either.

  • Anonymous

There are people on other boards (like the Pulse Board) who aren’t Kris fans who have expressed interest in his music now that they have heard the snippets of VOL (either the remix and/or this one). So who knows — maybe he will connect to a bunch of new fans once his new music is released. We won’t really know one way or another for awhile longer. I’m keeping my expectations in terms of sales low, having seen what has happened with many other ex-Idols on album #2. But I think in terms of actual quality of music, this era is going to be really good. Which, as a Kris fan, is just as important to me. I’m hoping it will sell well, though :)

  • ryuryu10

But you cann’t say your opinion represents the real world opinion. You love James Durn’s music but how are James’s single doing in the itune charts?

  • rayni

I am ca-RAZY about “My Weakness”!  I like Vision of Love and I’ll buy the album because Kris has one of ‘those voices’ I just love and will always respond to.  Inexplicable, but true :)

  • Anonymous

That’s all true, but since Kris’ album doesn’t even have a definite release date (just a tentative on) it is harder to get buzz going. Once the release date is set and the single is released, he’ll start doing promo, and that will result in more buzz, although how much will likely depend on how the single does. Kris is well liked by DJs, PDs and reporters (I always see people talking about what a nice guy he is after they interview him), which can’t hurt. But, because he isn’t someone who gets a lot of attention for things not revolving around his music (for instance, we don’t get pap photos of him at the grocery store or gossip columns talking about  his marriage), whatever buzz he ends up getting will depend pretty much 100% of how people respond to the music.

Self-promotion is considered great by some and kind of useless by others but I look at it this way.  An actor who has a “name” can sell tickets to a movie or a play that might not be very good but people are interested in seeing them so he/she keeps on working and has the opportunity to fall into some really good parts that enhance their cred.  Good actors who aren’t mainstream also get movie and play gigs but they don’t seem to make as much money, nor are they as “in demand” by directors or producers who, besides from putting out a good product, really do want to sell something. So famous actors tend to get more gigs than their quiet counterparts.

Its all about where someone “wants” to be…a working actor or a famous actor.  Nothing wrong with either one…but it is easier to keep working if you are able to find some measure of success and success stems from working and selling.  Its a great Catch 22.

BTIKM is showing that it’s not that simple or easy, but a song that just passed it, Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” is showing that a song can skyrocket based on promotion, and it’s popularity in other countries.

Gotye’s song has been out since July 2011 so “skyrocket” is a bit overstated.  I don’t think any song that’s been out for 7 months can be considered skyrocketing.  BTIKM has been on radio for less than a month and it’s already just outside the HOT AC top 30 and has sold probably close to 70K copies to date.  The video isn’t in regular rotation on VH1 yet unlike Gotye’s.

Kris needs a solid radio hit but the success of LLWD v. the success of KATA shows that even with a solid hit Kris’ albums might not connect with a wider audience than his core fanbase.

Kris has gotten better at the self-promotion so hopefully this era will be better in that regard.

Oh my at the angst! I know it goes with the territory but whether or not Kris (or Adam,David C,David A etc….) becomes a huge commercial success I’m still going to buy and seek out his music.  He might be playing at small clubs and signed to an indie label  but that doesn’t make me like his voice less.  Heck, when Katy Perry and Lady Gaga come on my radio I switch the channel so fast.LOL!

Anyway,  I love the way he delivers the chorus!  “Stand for the vision of love, stand for the vision of loooove”  when he draws out the second “love”  I “loooove” that!

LOL I hit Liked instead of Reply. I’m not sure I should feel honored or creeped out you researched my posts but whatevs. The huge difference is that I’ve been quite open in the past about saying LMB as the lead single was a huge mistake, and much better songs on James’ album should’ve been chosen instead. That combined with the total lack of decent promotion was a no brainer.

On the other hand, I believe VOL is a great track, and a very smart choice for a single.

Because, honestly, there wasn’t much out there in the mainstream about Kelly during her recording period, other than the coverage of a few leaks. Of course, she’s Kelly, and radio will welcome her with open arms. But, it’s just proof that radio and promotion from the label can cure time off.

You can’t really compare Kelly’s “time off” to Kris’ because even when Kelly is recording an album she has four albums worth of material that radio still plays on a fairly regular basis so, while she might not be making headlines she’s still in the radio listeners ear with her prior music.

Reality is the likely result of this second album will be disappointing.  That’s just the way it goes.  No other idol other than Kelly has exceeded their debut with their sophmore release and Kris’ debut numbers were a lot less than every idol except Lee.  Most idols sell about 50% of their debut so that would put Kris right around 150K give or take or he could go Cook’s route and sell about 10% which would be 30K.

Only time will tell but so far I see nothing to indicate there is a huge interest in Kris.

    Unofficial lyrics My Weakness;

Couple lovebirds kissing on the corner
Couldn’t help but remind me of you
    Half-way through dialing your number
    You know it’s true
    I wanted to

Took a stroll down Sunset Boulevard
Heard an old man singing the blues
Half-way through writing you a love song
    You know it’s true
    I wanted to

The sun rise on the east side
wanna wake up next to you
but I’m dreaming on the west side
trying to find my way to you

    Tell me you want me
    I’m speechless and I’m shaking
    Tell me you need me
    You better believe me
When I say you are my weakness
    That you are my weakness
And you get me every time.

Tired of flipping through the channels on the TV
Nothing on can shake you out of my mind
So I grab my coat and I’m out the door
    I’m just killing time
    ’til you’re by my side

Too many places get in the way of
    bringing you back into view
When the sun rise on the east side
wanna wake up next to you
but I’m dreaming on the west side
trying to find my way to you

    Tell me you want me
    I’m speechless and I’m shaking
    Tell me you need me
    You better believe me
When I say you are my weakness
    That you are my weakness
And you get me every time.

Caught in the middle of the storm
    you are my shelter
When all I see is black and white
    you are the color
    Nothing can stop me
no distance too great to cover
All I wanna hear you say

    Tell me you want me
    Speechless and I’m shaking
    Tell me you need me
    You better believe me
When I say you are my weakness
    That you are my weakness
    Oh, you are my weakness.
    Yes, you are my weakness.
and you get me every time

Stand Up is a better song, but never got ANY promo until last week, and even then it wasn’t even a national promo. Neither song was radio friendly. The verdict is still out for James after they release the 2 new rumored singles to radio.

Yet another Kris demo?! Really, really love “My Weakness”. :D

It doesn’t sound like something that could’ve made his debut. This is definitely a fresher sound. Man can he write a catchy song or
what? Grabbed me from the first listen.

It would be a shame if this gem doesn’t make his sophomore album.

OT. Hopefully the AI8 boys can both break the sophomore slump. Some new names on the charts would be nice. If Haley gets any radio play at all I will be over the moon.(Even more so if her music is played in my area.)If she hit’s it big then that would just be an extra layer of happy cake icing. Idol’s golden trio is awesome, but it’s time that some new stars were made.(Scotty’s star seems pretty bright at the moment. I hope it stays bright.)Unless people expect them to crank out hits well into old age…Kris may not be star material to some, and I get that. He has real potential to become one though. IMO Hopefully RCA sticks to their word about really getting their artists out there this time around. Or however they said it. lol

Just reading these comments, both positive and negative, I have a feeling this song is going to hit big. It has certainly gotten people’s attention both inside and outside the bubble.

I can see what the PDs and DJs were excited about last year. Nobody asked them (or even knew there was a radio industry event) about Kris. That was spontaneous.

I am laughing about the comments on Kris singing falsetto. Evidently some people were not paying attention when Kris was on AI. Not something new for him nor is he pushing or straining. Just doing what comes naturally.

Kris may have been out of the public eye (I’m very thankful that he’s not tabloid fodder) but he’s a real songwriter/musician and that has been his concentration. He’s been making the connections that count.

I’m sure tomorrow with be another opportunity to pick him & his music apart when the videos surface from THe Mint. I’m so thrilled to finally get to see him live.

The comments from dj’s from the preview back in July seems very encouraging.

I think the meeting was actually for PDs, and those who have a say in what their stations play.  At least one of the djs is the co Program Director at his station.

  • http://twitter.com/buffyloverlori buffyloverlori

I so agree with you Miz. I wish I was seeing him again. I had so much fun seeing him when he was at state college, he sure put’s on one hell of a show. Am going to try and get a couple of hour’s of sleep in a few minutes than again tonight after Idol so I can follow along with the list it well be around midnight here. Already told hubby that I was taking a nap and why it thinks am nuts but he knows how crazy I am about Kris and his music, so it really doesn’t mind. He had so much fun with me when we went to the concert, and when he tours if it’s around here or not to far away he’ll take me to another one. He was joking with me when we first heard about this gig, and he said if we we’re rich he’d by us some airplane tickets to go to the show. He really likes Kris and his not very big on Idol, only likes Carrie, and Kelley, and Adam to some agree so him liking Kris and the way he sings is a very big deal. Have a lot of fun, which am sure you’ll have no trouble doing.

This is a good song and radio will play a good song, The key to success is having good songs.  Kris obviously took the time to make sure he came up with song that isn’t bland and forgettable as his second album debut single.  He knows how to play the game, he knows he can’t just put anything out there, that it has to be good so escape the sophomore slump.

I don’t hold out a lot of hope for Kris’ sophomore album honestly.  Not because of his talent, he’s amazingly talented and I actually like his CD overall better than most Idol debuts but he just doesn’t seem to connect to a broader audience than his core fans from Idol.

See I think that Kris did connect to a larger audience at least somewhat with the success of LLWD. I think the problem was people didn’t connect the artist to the song and I think the lack of promotion when the song peaked around February of 2010 contributed to that. Another problem was the weak second single (The Truth) which was pretty much DOA and didn’t get much, if any play on CHR so there was little follow-up for people to further connect with Kris.

I have no doubt that his management team will do its job when the time comes.

Hmm, let’s just say that the jury is still out for me.  Kris’s management team and label need to have well though-out plan for radio AND promotion this time. I think the first time around they had a radio plan — for the first single — but didn’t have a focused PR plan and no foresight whatsoever in choosing the second single.

I have every faith in Kris’s musicality and talent. I am optimistic about his upcoming album. I just want Kris to be in a good position with radio and PR to hopefully be successful.

i think the falsetto sounds good. i’m not liking the backing instrumentals on the chorus though. it’s a bit too lazy and soft (compared to his voice which sorta overpowers the instrumentals) i’m assuming this is an unmastered version. so remix >>> for now

my weakness sounds like a catchy summer song, too. it’s a bit andy grammer-ish, no? curious to see if it makes the album. definitely prefer it to the two songs kris has already played live for the new album (zzz HAC fare, IMO).

Hmm, can’t say I’m particularly impressed by the snippet, but it is just a snippet after all.

That said, I think it does sound radio friendly and with the PD-buzz and the team-up with Clear Channel on the Donor’s Choose thing I am sure this will be very well received on pop radio from the very start.

Another advantage of the DC-thing is that they actually use the song with the PSA, so depending on how much it is aired the public will already be familiar with the song when it drops (to some extent at least), so it should get a really good iTunes response as well.

Altogether it sounds like Kris and his team have really gotten their act together to start this era, so I expect big things.

See I think that Kris did connect to a larger audience at least somewhat with the success of LLWD. I think the problem was people didn’t connect the artist to the song

Exactly.  There was a huge disconnect with people who heard and liked the song.  I think most people who heard the song didn’t associate Kris with it because it sounded just like The Script who was having a huge hit at that time with Breakeven.  So while the song itself reached outside the idol bubble that didn’t translate into album sales.

and I think the lack of promotion when the song peaked around February of 2010 contributed to that.

One thing LLWD did not lack was promotion.  Kris was all over radio when it initially debuted and he did every radio concert possible that Winter to promote the song.  He performed on countless shows as well.  The only thing Kris didn’t get was an Idol performance with LLWD but that’s because he had moved onto his second single, which he did get to perform on Idol.

Another problem was the weak second single (The Truth) which was pretty much DOA and didn’t get much, if any play on CHR so there was little follow-up for people to further connect with Kris.

The Truth was a huge mistake by Jive.  Not necessarily the song itself because it’s a great song but rather the timing of releasing that type of song in the Summer.  They should’ve gone with a more uptempo song for Summer (like Written All Over Myself or Can’t Stay Away) and saved The Truth for Fall without the addition of the Train dude.

I think the first time around they had a radio plan — for the first single — but didn’t have a focused PR plan and no foresight whatsoever in choosing the second single.

I agree.  The radio rollout for LLWD was near perfect but Kris’ PR was terrible.  The Christmas photoshoot looking like a grandpa was ill-advised at best.  Kris needs to market himself as a young hip guy.  Kris also needs media training as he’s a very boring interview subject unless he’s being interviewed by a guy who has a man-crush on him like Jim C or Slezak.

Kris has the musical talent to be a big success he just needs to put forth the effort to make it happen and having photoshoots w/ Zorro isn’t gonna do it IMO

To each their own, but I don’t think this is bland at all.

Except for that whole number one, Grammy nominated song with one of the hottest acts in Country Music right now. Kelly performed with Jason on several TV shows and Country Awards shows. She also has ten years of Top 10 songs being played on the radio as recurrents. I like both Kelly and Kris, but they are at totally different places in their careers.

I really dislike snippets. Going from the remix, VOL sounds like a great song to reintroduce Kris back to the general radio listeners. If you are a guy, you have few choices in today’s market. You either need to rap, hire a rapper, have a high voice, or use falsetto. You can try singing higher and failing by sounding strained or not being able to sing the song live (Daughtry’s latest song) or you can follow the falsetto trend. I’m not sure why the high voices are the only way to go at the moment, but Kris was smart to include some falsetto in his debut single.

Great post with interesting info.  I like Kris a lot as a laid-back, humorous kind of guy, but you’re correct, he has to become more current.  “My Weakness” is a fun track (“Alright with Me” is one of my favs – so I like his faster stuff a lot).  But the whistling might stop me from buying it – so over whistling in a song.  Can’t tell anything about “Vision of Love” – like the falsetto as long as he doesn’t overdo it.  My favorite song of Kris’s is “Bring It Back” – so if there’s anything like that on the CD – a definite buy for me.  But the sophomore slump is scary – DC not successful – omens of doom on some threads for Adam – don’t know what to think about Kris.  Hope it’s successful though – he’s got Zorro to support.

How do you know that this person hasn’t liked Kris’ music?  They seem to have only rated 10 songs total and of those 10 songs six of them got a 9/10 (same score as Kris) and none got lower than an 8.5.  They gave Madonna’s latest Give Me All Your Luvin 9/10 and Melanie Amaro’s Respect 10/10 so for me, personally, I can’t take them seriously because those two songs are complete shite.  *JMO*

The second song reminds me of Gavin’s album. I’m not a big fan of Kris or Archie’s falsetto, it seems a little uncomfortable for both, but that can be worked on with a vocal coach.

I think Vision will probably be a pretty decent sized hit for him though

  • Anonymous

I think most people who heard the song didn’t associate Kris with it because it sounded just like The Script who was having a huge hit at that time with Breakeven.  So while the song itself reached outside the idol bubble that didn’t translate into album sales.

I don’t necessarily think that people thought Kris was the Script. I’ve never heard of The Script before LLWD so I’m sure there were maybe other people who may haven’t known either. Also, I think another one of The Script’s songs was on the radio at the same time as LLWD. Breakeven didn’t become a hit until well after LLWD. BTW, I’m not saying that LLWD had anything to do with Breakeven being hit. Maybe both songs benefited from each other in some way. I know when I hear a song I like, I make it point to find out about the artist regardless if the song sounds like it could be another artist/band. But for whatever reason, there was a disconnect with LLWD and Kris that hopefully will not be much of a problem for the next single/album.

One thing LLWD did not lack was promotion.  Kris was all over radio when it initially debuted and he did every radio concert possible that Winter to promote the song.  He performed on countless shows as well.

I agree with this. But issue with LLWD is that it took about 5 months before it reached its peak. So when the most people were listening to the song, there didn’t seem to me be much promotion to connect Kris with LLWD. I think if he would have performed LLWD on Idol that would have helped the connection. There was time for Kris to perform LLWD on Idol because the other problem with Jive was that they waited too late after LLWD to pick the second single. So there was like a two month gap between songs.

Kris also needs media training as he’s a very boring interview subject unless he’s being interviewed by a guy who has a man-crush on him like Jim C or Slezak.

I think Kris comes across as sincere and engaged in his interviews the majority of of the time. Clearly, the more comfortable he feels with the interviewer the better he is in the interview. I think if Kris concentrates on getting his message across in the to the audience during the interview he will be fine.

I love Kris’s upbeat songs but I really love his angsty songs like “I Need To Know” too.  It gets me every time I hear it.  He just knows how to connect emotionally to music which is why I love him. Hopefully this album can be a mixture of both.

“Vision Of Love” is a Kris Allen co-write so he won’t have the same initial issues he had with LLWD being a cover.  He has an automatic talking point for VOL being a co-write to the remix version, win/win. He will have an opportunity to talk about “his” song without all the other extraneous distractions.

  • Anonymous

It’s always great when people outside the bubble like an Idol’s song, but quoting or linking one or two (or even ten) peoples’ comments is not a good measure of how well the song will do with the general listening public. This goes for all of the Idols! It comes down to how radio listeners on a large scale, over a long period relate to the song. I do believe VOL has a good chance to accomplish that, but bringing over a few examples of random people doesn’t really prove anything. We need hundreds of thousands of people liking the song!

  • Anonymous

I admit to liking only about half the songs on Kris’ previous album, but I’ve been impressed with all the songs and snippets I’ve heard from this new Kris era.  I think he’ll do fine just because of the strength of his material.

Also, it’s hard to believe My Weakness wouldn’t make the cut, – it’s not a weak song at all.

  • http://twitter.com/buffyloverlori buffyloverlori

I agree Nekola; I never heard of the script either until I heard about LLWD, and than I went out and got one of their CD’S. I never even listened to their version of LLWD because I only wanted to associate the way the song was being sung, by Kris. And I think Kris has gotten a lot better at interviews since that time of his first CD.

  • Anonymous

People really hadn’t heard of The Script? It may be a generational thing.

Many had already heard of The Man Who Can’t Be Moved and The Script was well known outside of the US. Breakeven went to radio in the middle of Sept. and had an add date at the end of that month. It took longer to climb (the US charts) but Breakeven ended up selling more and charting higher than LLWD.

  • http://twitter.com/Miztig Miz

Another problem Kris had the first time around is that there is another Kris Allen. Country Kris would come up when I searched on iTunes, Amazon, Billboard, etc. Radio stations had links to the other Kris Allen’s album or his picture with Kris song or video. It was confusing for me, so it had to be uber confusing for a casual listener knowing nothing about him.

His PR people and Jive in general did very little in my opinion. I think things will go much better with RCA behind the wheel.

That was then, this is now.

What a wonderful day this has been for Kris fans!

I really think RCA could be timing this perfectly. Although we don’t have the whole song yet, from the pieces that have emerged I think VOL is a perfect “comeback” song…it features uplifting and hopeful lyrics, it is uptempo, and it is addictive. In some ways, it reproduces the winning formula of LLWD. In my opinion, it will be a fantastic Spring song…it will build through February and March and it will be a genuine radio hit by April. That will give Kris great buzz for his album, which will drop sometime around then.

The big thrill today, however, has been “My Weakness”. Wow! What a catchy and fantastic song. To me, it is the perfect Summer song; can’t you just imagine having that on the radio, driving with the windows down? I can imagine RCA releasing that song right before the album, right before Spring turns to Summer, and allowing that to carry Kris and his album through June, July and August.

And to think, Kris seems genuinely excited about all the music on this album! I can’t wait to see what else is in store for us!

An amazing song can cover a million flaws (real or perceived). What if Kris really is everything his critics claim: boring, bad at interviews, no buzz, no personality. Even if those things are true (and I do not concede these points at all), a catchy, heartfelt, well constructed, well delivered pop song will speak for itself. TWO such songs have leaked today. Imagine what else he has up his sleeve!

Kris is the best at turning heads by arranging great songs and delivering them with heart and artistry. He won American Idol with those skills, and I am confident that he will win over radio this year. Time will tell, but anyway, I’m super excited, and I am happy to bet on him having an amazing year.

  • mmb

I honestly wish Kris the best- I like the guy even if I’m not a fan of some of his music ( and some I do like…). But I would not look to RCA to be anyone’s savior or be any better than Jive. Expecting things to somehow be better or different with RCA is, IMO , misguided. They are a label like any other label. They
make good decisions and crappy ones. They have successes and failures. Post combo with Jive they’ve doubled the amount of
major stars they manage. What they do with Kris, who knows.

The Script were definitely successful overseas and may have had a nice following in the US on college radio, but they hadn’t had a hit in the US prior to Breakeven, so they couldn’t be described as well known in the US prior to fall 2009. The twin successes of LLWD and Breakeven really turned them from college radio darlings into mainstream successes

I WISH I could use the “generational thing” as an excuse! :)

I’m mostly an R&B type of gal, so I didn’t listen to a lot of pop music before Kris but I have listened (and bought) more pop music since. I do like Breakeven, but haven’t bought any of The Script’s music as of yet.

Just wanted to say VOL is much better choice than BTIKM. *shakes fist at RCA for that one

    Only if you’re deaf.

  • Tess

Is Kris still with 19M or has he moved on now that his contract with them is up?  If they didn’t promote him well last time I would think the guy, like Cook and Adam, would move on to greener pastures.

  • Anonymous

That’s what I said. It could be a generational thing. The Script were college radio darlings and the younger crowd had heard of them, but you are correct that Breakeven broke them into a mainstream music success.

  • koshka

Yeah… I can’t hear allen singing BTIKM. Glad he passed on it. LOL

  • Anonymous

He’s still with 19.  The 19News twitter has been very active over the past several months about promoting the people still with the company — not a day goes by without seeing them tweet something about Scotty, Lauren, Pia, James, Haley, Kris, Lee or whoever.

  • Anonymous

To me, both VOL and BTIKM are slightly above average songs which would probably be hits if sung my someone really big like Bruno Mars.  Neither of these guys is big enough to have a major hit unless the song is just fantastic.  I might be wrong about VOL as have not heard it all.  BTIKM is not tearing up the charts, but it is making steady progress so I hope I am wrong.

  • Anonymous

If I am not mistaken Kris’ contract with 19 expires in May.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WIHKL34XDORTS2UZP4SWUUTG3U randi

I don’t necessarily think that people thought Kris was the Script.

No, you’re right they didn’t think Kris was The Script but they thought the song LLWD was by The Script because it mimicked their style and phrasing to a tee.

I’ve never heard of The Script before LLWD so I’m sure there were maybe other people who may haven’t known either.

Of course there were other people who didn’t know who The Script were but they did have a cult following here in the U.S. prior to breaking big with their first U.S. hit Breakeven.

Also, I think another one of The Script’s songs was on the radio at the same time as LLWD. Breakeven didn’t become a hit until well after LLWD.

This is incorrect.  Breakeven was The Script’s first U.S. hit.  They were performing and promoting it at the same time LLWD was being promoted.  They appeared on Ellen in Oct 2009 to perform the song.  It did take longer to peak than LLWD and peaked higher on Pop at #6 in May 2010.

BTW, I’m not saying that LLWD had anything to do with Breakeven being hit. Maybe both songs benefited from each other in some way.

I do think both songs were helped but I’d say Kris and LLWD gained more esp when you consider that The Script has continued to make songs that are moderate hits while Kris has fallen off the radar.

I know when I hear a song I like, I make it point to find out about the artist regardless if the song sounds like it could be another artist/band.

    Me too

But for whatever reason, there was a disconnect with LLWD and Kris that hopefully will not be much of a problem for the next single/album.

I have always wondered if people sampled Kris’ album and because most of the songs were so different than LLWD they didn’t give it a chance.  It’s a shame if that’s the case because they missed out on a truly great album IMO.

I also hope he finds his grove with this new era.  Kris’ talent should be enjoyed by as many people as possible.

  • http://twitter.com/Miztig Miz

I guess I must not live in a bubble. I heard of the Script before they broke in the US. Of course, I hang out with a bunch of guys online killing monsters and blowing things up. We talk music a lot.

Yes hoosiermama2, I’m going too and all the rest of the people who came to Viper Room the last time. :)
So, there will be many videos and tweets for you guys.

I haven’t even read this thread yet, been busy and Kris kept having demos leaked. I can’t keep them straight.

I’m soon excited for tonight !

Sounds amazing!   Both of them, can’t wait.  So much talent!

I am NOT a fan of Vision of Love… If that is the first single can you imagine Kris trying to sing that live?! The My Weakness song was a bit better I found myself tapping my foot along with it… but I did turn it off before it was over because I found it to be a bit repetitive and the whistling started to give me a headache.

  • http://twitter.com/dy7764 dy77

If that is the first single can you imagine Kris trying to sing that live?!

LOL, yes, actually I can! :) I think it will be great live. We’ll find out tonight, hopefully.

  • rbidol

Um…yes, I can imagine him singing it live. Easily. He uses his falsetto live all the time. Always has.

I’m glad you started to like My Weakness, anyway.

  • Anonymous

My Weakness is a very good track but I’m sure VOL will revealed to be a better one. I think the snippet is the end of the song and we still don’t hear any of the gorgeous verses.
This said, i’m so looking forward to hear VOL in full but also those tracks that gets Kris very excited “out alive” and ‘monsters”.
    exciting times!!

LLWD and the Script were discussed. For me, those 2 successes are independant of each other in the making. I think the majority of people doesn’t really care of who wrote the song and more focus on the actual delivery

ps: infinite GAH!! when i read a sentence containing VOL and BTIKM lol

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WIHKL34XDORTS2UZP4SWUUTG3U randi

Just wanted to say VOL is much better choice than BTIKM. *shakes fist at RCA for that one

How can you tell that from a 30 second clip?  Also, better for who?  Kris and Adam aren’t the same type of artist and therefore will likely never release the same type of songs so what is a good choice for one wouldn’t necessarily be a good choice for the other.

  • Anonymous

I agree, Kris’ falsetto has gotten stronger since Idol and the tour. For the most part, men’s voices mature and continue to get better as the age. If he does have trouble singing parts of VOL or if it is too much when it is included in a long set, Kris can just drop it a step lower. Daughtry should have done that for his live performances of CBTY, but he was too stubborn.

It will be a learning process over the next few weeks, it always is. I expect VOL to sound good, but Kris will know whether to change it up in the future or not.

  • Anonymous

Much as I like Kris’s voice and some of his songs (VOL looks to be in his comfortable zone and looking forward to hearing it in its entirety), have to disagree here.  BTIKM is a track that few could sing – brilliant vocals.  Love the vid.

  • Anonymous

Yes, IMO can’t compare releases for two such different singers.  I think these tracks suit Kris and Adam just fine.

  • Anonymous

Yep. Mine’s UselessInDaRain. I’ll go follow ya. :)

  • Anonymous

LOL at the old Script discussion, Kris is a bad interview, Kris is boring, his voice sounds strained, how will he ever sing this live rearing  they’re heads once again.  Some things never change.

  • Anonymous

I think the majority of people doesn’t really care of who wrote the song and more focus on the actual delivery

Truer words have never been written.   It’s a tired argument that doesn’t carry as much weight as a Platinum record, 1.7 million copies sold, top five on HAC, top ten on pop, top ten on AC, and top 40 on the Christian charts.

I don’t get how the so called Script song is an issue, but WWFM being written for and by Pink isn’t.  People really don’t seem to have the need to call it Pink’s song, or try to diminish what Adam did with it.  Live Like We’re Dying is a good song, but if Kris didn’t nail the delivery, then it wouldn’t have sold 1.7 million copies, or lasted as long as it did on the charts, especially when many radio PDs were slow to give it a chance.

  • Anonymous

“LOL at the old Script discussion, Kris is a bad interview, Kris is boring, his voice sounds strained, how will he ever sing this live rearing  they’re heads once again.  Some things never change.”

I’m excited because I’m thinking we’re gonna find out how “strained” Kris’ voice will sound tonight when he sings VOL! I want to hear the whole song and THEN I’ll be able to make up my mind about it. So far I like what I hear.

  • Anonymous

I think most people who heard the song didn’t associate Kris with it because it sounded just like The Script who was having a huge hit at that time with Breakeven.

You might want to check the records at Pulse for the actual timelines.  Breakeven brokeout after LLWD.  LLWD’s chart run was faster than Breakeven’s and by the time Breakeven made the top 40 on Pop and HAC, LLWD was already in the top 20 on both charts.  When LLWD was released, The Script were not well known in the US.

For the most part one single doesn’t sell an album.  With the advent of Itunes  and other digital downloading sites people just aren’t going to buy or listen to an album if they’ve only heard one song.  There’s just no point to purchasing the whole thing, and most people aren’t going to take the time to sample the whole album of an artist who they aren’t familiar with.  This is ancient history, but the problem arose when Jive decided to release a song that did not appeal to the bulk of the audience who purchased, heard, or liked LLWD, so of course that was going to have an impact on the number of albums that Kris sold.  Jive went from having a song that worked on four formats, to one that barely fit one.  And a that at most reached a quarter of the amount of people who heard LLWD.

Honestly, none of that matters.  Obviously RCA doesn’t feel like it’s an obstacle that can’t be dealt with, since they are giving Kris another album.

  • rbidol

Obviously this comment thread is not for arguing about what happened in 2009-2010, but I do not consider the reasoning here persuasive. The idea that LLWD was a hit because the public thought it was a “The Script” song…there is just no evidence of that. Kris Allen was a fairly well known figure in 2009…he had just had just been featured on the most popular television show in the country, and had won in an upset, thus creating an immense amount of media attention. The Script, meanwhile, apparently (according to you) had a “cult following” in America.

So, both newly crowned American Idol Kris Allen and a band from Dublin with a cult following in the US release a song to US radio in late September 2009. Both songs entered the Hot 100 in the low 90s, and both rose into the top 20. Kris’s song hit it’s peak in mid-March, The Script not until mid-May. Meanwhile, both songs sold over 1,000,000 copies.

Given these facts, I just don’t think it is likely that Kris was ridding anyone’s coattails. The song was written by someone else, Kris made it a hit. Big deal, it happens every single day. Ryan Tedder writes many songs for many people…we do not go around saying that people who listen to or buy those songs thought they were buying OneRepublic, even though OneRepublic has been famous much longer.

So far as I’m concerned, the evidence points to the fact that Kris owns LLWD and it’s success.

  • Anonymous

I think the problem was that because The Script had recorded the song  it was in reality a cover.  I think Kris used the same instrumentation even.  Me personally, I thought it was a dumb arguement because Kris did a great job on that song.

  • Anonymous

I don’t care where artists get their songs from. The “cover” discussion is as useless as the “co-writer” discussion when it comes down to what song will be a hit or not. Outside of the bubble, no one cares about these things!

LLWD sounds like a song from The Script and WWFM sounds like a PINK song. One was a cover of a song that had been released internationally, the other was a song that had a demo from another writer. Both the songs did well on the charts and one even got a Grammy nomination for the VOCAL performance! I agree that it is important how you deliver and sell the song as an artist.

  • Anonymous

The “problem” only existed in the idol bubble imo. The 1.7 million people who bought LLWD didn’t have a problem, because if they did they could have downloaded the Script’s version from youtube.
Anyway it looks like Kris’ first single will be a co-write, so that “problem” shouldn’t come up this time (thank goodness).

  • Anonymous

They sure don’t! There is a general checklist for the season 8 guys we should just go through and check off. I expect to see the same ole lists when both albums debut. Things don’t change, it would be nice if they did, especially for those of us who like both guys!

  • Anonymous

I’m really curious to see how Kris, Cale & Torres do Vision of Love live tonight.  We’ve heard two pretty different versions of the song now, so it will be fun to watch videos of the performance to see how they work it out live with just the 3 of them.

The more I listen to My Weakness, the more I love it.  I hope it makes the new album.  All these leaks are very curious.

I wonder if Kris will answer any fan questions after the show about what songs will be on the album? Somehow I doubt it.

  • Anonymous

“Vision Of Love” is a Kris Allen co-write so he won’t have the same initial issues he had with LLWD being a cover.  He has an automatic talking point for VOL being a co-write to the remix version, win/win. He will have an opportunity to talk about “his” song without all the other extraneous distractions.

LOL, it just may be me, but I think it was the fans and non fans in the bubble who had the issue, not Kris, those outside the bubble who liked the song, or even those in radio.   This is just my humble opinion, but I think the problem with LLWD always had more to do with Kris winning AI, and nothing more.  This was not the first instance of someone releasing a cover, or releasing a song that her or she had no hand in writing.  All of the discussions about it happened in the bubble, and none of it had any real meaning, or any impact on whether or not people outside of the bubble liked the song.

Yep, My Weakness has been removed. I think we all know what that means…

Yes.  This could be very good news.  I hope it’s a case of the song making the album, and not just Sony being upset about possible copyright infringement, because even though they can’t seem to stop leaks, they will move fast on any song that is posted without their permission.

  • CircadianDomination

I certainly hope it’s on the album. It’s really catchy and I think it has summer single potential…

Ta-Da! The song has been registered on BMI with the legal title of Stand For The Vision of Love. Which will help it in terms of not being confused for the Mariah Carey song, but is a little bit of a mouthful. Will be interesting to see if they release the song under the full legal title

i prefer this title but will continue to refer to it as VOL for simplicity :)
I wonder why it wasn’t registered before, especially that there is a remix out there since a couple of weeks

I’m not talking about the vocals or how hard the song is to sing.  I don’t think BTIKM was the right lead single for Adam (too safe) and this song sounds like a good lead single for Kris.  Same way I didn’t think TLG was the right lead single choice for Cookie, it didn’t suit him or the rest of the album. But for someone who only likes a few Kris songs, this sounds like Kris.   I kind the second song a little boring though, it’s not single material.

  • Anonymous

Of course they won’t release the same type of songs. I like this choice for Kris better than the choice they made for Adam. From what I can tell in the 30 seconds.

  • http://twitter.com/doesmonaknow DoesMonaKnow

I love My Weakness! I think the timing is actually great right now that it could become a big spring/summer song if were released soon.

He’s singing about longing/pining a lot. It’s common songwriting fodder, love, but it’s always interesting to me what songwriters choose to write about and the angles they work. Take Bruno Mars, he sings about love, too, but he’s a lot more dramatic about it than most. :)

  • judes

Oh opalruby I am sooooo with you there. I spent many hours writing & responding to the label here in Australia last time & they never gave me a definitive answer as to why Kris’s album was not available here[only The Truth video was!!!]Even Lee’s & Crystal’s album the next year were made available !!!] I wish i-Tunes songs were available everywhere -that’s my dream!!!! here’s hoping this time!!
I love the song snippet & Kris’s falsetto . Can’t wait to hear what everyone thinks after they see Kris perform.

  • Anonymous

Yes, it sounds like Kris, which is good and I like very much – and it’s a nice, safe lead single.  It suits his current image.   Just don’t know if that’s enough.  But some here have said that djs/pds really like him which is a real plus.  But to make an impression above all the clatter in today’s music is difficult – for any singer.  And he’s just so darn relaxed.

Looking forward to the vids – hope they’re of good quality.

  • Karen C

I really like Vision of Love and My Weakness.  I think either could be a hit, and sounds very current.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UITYTUSGL7IK7WLFFDXXRYP7GA Falfor

Gotta admit, there is not much pretentious about Kris. What you see is what you get and I think he is letting the music speak for itself. He had a hand in writing most of everything if not everything we have heard and not too many have been unnoticed. This is what he is about, what he has to offer and if it is not enough to get him where he wants to be, then he can change it or accept what he does have and move on. Either way, I think Kris has proven himself in the music industry, and that was his first goal anyway. Love the fact that home is Arkansas, and his notoriety and commonness are rolled into one. Kudos Kris.

So many of the tweets just announced the song and didn’t say anything about it. Better With You seemed to be universally loved, though, but I don’t have a handle on Monster or Out Alive. How was VOL received (and did Kris say it will be the first single)? So many questions…but really really happy that everything went well. He’s a sly one to do a Rihanna/KP/Gaga mashup–love him!!

Just got home after the concert. It was so good! Kris, Cale & Torres were in fine form — the harmonies in particular were beautiful. Kris was obviously happy to be performing live again, and was just as fanny and self-deprecating in his banter as always.

I liked all the new songs — my favorites right now may be Monster and Out Alive, but that could change. Loved the rap in Better with You and I loved the fact that he played piano on VOL. Even acoustic, it definitely had a strong pop vibe to it. If I had to pick a least favorite it was probably Teach Me How to Love, the song he co-wrote with Cale, although that wasn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination — it just didn’t catch my imagination. Maybe it will grow on me.

Loved the changes he made to Leave You Alone. He joked about how somebody might tell him that playing a certain chord may be “weird” and that he figured that hey, if he didn’t play the chord, people would like the song better. He also totally switched the latter part of LLWD up. Very cool.

At one point he was flat on his back on the stage, laughing at something. He also gave someone in the audience his bottle of water when she asked for some water, jokingly told somebody it was rude to scream at him while he was talking, etc.

And of course, in addition to sounding great, there is the shallow fact that he, Cale and Torres all looked totally hot :)

RCA and 19 execs were there — there were a couple tables reserved for them. Kris evidentally “schmoozed” with them after his show. He eventually came out to talk to the fans, take pictures, etc. Tim Pagnotta (the producer Kris has been working a lot with recently) was also there. He co-wrote Out Alive w/ Kris. I felt bad for the band who followed him — the place really cleared out after Kris’ set and nobody was paying much attention to the band, even though they played a nice energetic set. I didn’t get to talk to Kris — he was being hustled out of the venue by then — but I did get a hug & a quick word, so that was good :)

Out Alive-holy hell! No wonder Kris likes that one so much.

Just watched all these videos and Kris was really, really good.  Funny & entertaining, sounded amazing, looked great, and these new songs are really good.

I haven’t heard all the new songs yet, but ‘Out Alive’ is quite mesmerising – heartfelt and uplifting and kind of genre-defying. It doesn’t remind me of any other song; it’s just itself. I can’t wait to hear the studio version.

Maybe I’m stupid, but every time that title was mentioned by Kris, I wondered what it meant; grammatically those two words didn’t seem to go together to make any kind of sense. But now it’s all clear!

And if it wasn’t nearly two in the morning right now, I think I would be about to listen to ’Out Alive’ another ten times in a row. But that and all the others will have to wait until tomorrow…..
