Kris Allen Auditioned for Rock of Ages (Plus, “Boyfriend” cover! VIDEO)

Kris Allen reveals to OK Magazine that he auditioned for the lead role in Rock of Ages, the movie, a role that was eventually won by newcomer, Diego Boneta.

“Everyone was like, you have to try out for this. I would have been terrible!,” says Kris, laughing. “I am supposed to have long hair and be this rock star guy. I would have sucked at it.”

“They said I was the best singer that had come in so far, which was cool, especially since the songs I was singing were like Foreigner songs. But I did the acting part, which I am sure I bombed. I never tried out for anything before.”

Is Kris considering acting as a career? “No…. maybe if it comes around again someday. But that is just not my thing. I’d probably freeze up a little bit,” Kris admits. “As long as the music thing is going okay, I’m probably going to stick to that. Or if it is at a good place, and something came up randomly, and I was going to be perfect for the part, I would do it. But I was not perfect for the lead role in Rock of Ages.”

The role Kris auditioned for was originated on Broadway by Constantine Maroulis, eventually earning the Season 4 alum a Tony nomination.

    LOL you could totally tell this crowd had no idea what this song was…. I love the Justin Bieber song and Kris’ cover was alright but the whole point of the song is to have swagger and attitude which Kris was lacking.

    Isn’t the obvious example of a singer with little to no acting experience landing a big role Jennifer Hudson? And she managed to get an Oscar for that role.  Just like singers, some people are naturals and are good with little training. Some people could take all the training in the world and still be terrible.

    Fantasia also anchored a successful Broadway musical without acting experience.  Brooke White played the lead in a TV movie.  Carrie had a supporting role in a major movie. Ace got murdered on Bones. The list goes on and on. And then we start talking about all those athletes who have been given acting parts.

    Kris tried out for a part in a movie. It was probably a lot of fun. Why not? He didn’t get the part. It’s a good thing Jennifer tried out for a part that she had little chance of getting based on her resume because it changed her life.

     I find that interesting, because whenever I see JB performing this I sort of grin and say, sure, whatever you say, whereas here, it felt sort of sexy and had meaning. Perhaps it’s that I was in the seventh grade when JB was born, but I find Kris’s version at least believable

    Oh man.. I wish Kris did get the role.. I just can’t imagine it at all but will be so exciting and fun to watch him act and possibly shirtless… :)

    I’ll have to disagree on both counts.  The first one, because based on the live webcast, the crowd was into the song, and the crowd was filled with teenagers.  The second, because Kris sounds incredibly sexy here.  I wish he’d done the whole song.

    Perception is truly in the eye of the beholder, because so many people would disagree that Bieber has swagger.

    I now know what many here have said about seeing Kris live and how his voice is even more beautiful in person.  Didn’t think I would get a chance to see him perform live, but when I heard he was going to be in Ocean City I knew I could get there.  It was so exciting, and Kris, Cale and Torres sounded great.  I have never heard “Boyfriend” before, but when he started singing I knew what song it must be.  The meet & greet line was huge, so I found a spot where I could just spectate.  When Kris was done and they were walking him out, much to my surprise, they headed straight for where I was standing.  I wanted to thank him for coming to OC, but being 2 feet away from him the words did not make it from by brain to my mouth.  He is one lovely individual.  There were a lot of people, men, women, young through older who were thrilled to see him.
