John Stevens Update: The Wonder of It All

Do you remember John Stevens? He was the red-haired teen-aged crooner from Season 3, eliminated in 6th place.

After leaving Idol and releasing his debut album, Red, on Maverick Records, John disappeared into academic life at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

These days, John performs with a local Boston swing band, the Beantown Swing Orchestra.

The band recently recorded a version of the Foxwoods Casino jingle for a contest the Connecticut casino is running.   John shares lead vocals with vocalist/trumpeter Leenie Doran.

Contest winners get $25,000 in prizes and will be featured in future Foxwoods commercials. Fan votes determine the 10 finalists who will compete on February 27 for the top prize. You can vote for John and the Beantown Swing Orchestra HERE.

Plus, John has just released a holiday album, filled with classic tunes called Home for Christmas.   It’s available on iTunes now:

The Beantown Swing Orchestra has several gigs in the Boston area (check out their schedule here).   I should drop by one of those gigs.   After 4 years at Berklee, I’ll bet John has matured quite a bit as a musician.

I actually bought Red before I watched Idol, so I was ignorant of the John Steven sucks thing, LOL. I’m glad for the update (and I’m going to check out his Christmas Album!

Awww, it’s John Stevens…..all growed up, lol. Good luck to him.

I’m really impressed that John has really stuck with the singing and followed a traditional music/voice education. He did not do well on AI. I really felt for him back then. He was 16 and didn’t know himself as a singer at all. he actually had a few good tracks on his CD, Red, especially the duet with actress Erika Christiansen, let’s fall in love.

I hope the beantownswing win the contest. I think he and his duet partner sound pretty good.

You know–I really like this song. I wonder if no one ever wrote a bridge for it?

    Hey, nice follow-up, mj

I was wondering about him and some of teen contestants after Idol.

aw, i like john stevens. he received a lot of crap because he stayed longer on the show than he should have but he took and handled all the criticisms extremely well. he’s such a good guy.

it’s nice to hear about him again. :)

I wish he and Paris could team up. But sadly, Paris isn’t playing to her strengths.

Nice to see that John is still in music.

Aw, look at John! I’m happy that he stuck with music. Follow your passion. Hopefully, my son will be joining the student body at Berklee next September (fingers crossed, audition in two weeks).

Thanks for the great follow-up, mj! I liked John and felt so badly that he got so much grief during his AI season. Nice to see he’s stuck with it.

Now that is a perfect fit! I’m so happy for him! I just listened and he has still got it!! :) I love the song. :)

this is good! I’m happy he stuck with music.

He always tried sounding like Dean Martin or Frank Sinatra which I found rather campy. Plus, he didn’t really do it that well. After some of these contestants are off Idol I can see where the judges were coming from in their critiques. The same with Chris Sligh. I tried listening to his music on myspace and I couldn’t get past his picture and his voice just irritated me.

Good luck to John! I always liked him.
I’ve seen him perform a swing concert twice in NY,soon after Red came out and enjoyed him immensely. He and his mom were so gracious and John signed the CD cover for me.
RED was a good CD, and the Xmas one should be good too

I always thought that he would have benefited from waiting a few years to try out for the show. But I suppose they wouldn’t have picked him, since Simon seemed to be looking for a *teen* crooner and not just a regular crooner.
