Check out actor, Jamie Foxx melisma-ing the hell out of the National Anthem at last night’s Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather fight in Las Vegas.
So…where the heck is Jessica Sanchez when you need her? The American Idol season 10 alum usually sings the anthem for Manny Pacquiao when he fights. But this particular bout was a big damn deal. LOTS of money involved. I heard ringside seats were $350,000! Under the circumstances, the promoters needed a well-known celebrity to do the honors.
The chatter on twitter after Jamie sang the anthem was pretty negative. He committed the the big no no of anthem singing. He added so many runs, that the melody became unrecognizable. Also, the performance was off-pitch in spots. Singers who don’t understand how to perform the anthem in a way that won’t offend people baffle me.
It’s simple: Stick to the melody. Don’t add TOO MANY unnecessary runs. Sing in tune. REMEMBER THE WORDS. That’s pretty much it! By the way, Mayweather won the fight. He was also on Dancing with the Stars back in Season 5. He was eliminated in the 4th week.
