Carrie’s Blown Away is also the #1 album in Canada this week: source

The American Idol winner’s fourth studio
release notched 17,300 in sales, beating her 2009 disc, “Play On,” by
over 2,000 units, according to figures compiled by Nielsen SoundScan.

This was Underwood’s second No. 1 debut in Canada since winning season four of the reality series.

I’ve been waiting for the Numbers thread, so as not to clutter up the thread for “This is the Last Song I’ll Write For You” with stats.

The song dropped at Midnight on iTunes, in the Rock category – presently, according to reports, it is #1 in Finnish iTunes, #4 in Amazon Japan, #1 in the iTunes Movers and Shakers in the UK, and 15 minutes ago, was #14 iTunes Rock, and #284 iTunes overall in the US. All this before there has been a performance anywhere.

This is cool to watch – and cooler still if it sustains. IMO. Not a Label chosen single, finally.

It’s time for the Twitter Power List, where ability to make people love ya transfers only dubiously to votes, but it’s not entirely a man’s world and for two more weeks, it ain’t goin’.

During the week (Thursday morning to shortly before the performance show on Wednesday night), gains were in the 7% to 7.6% range… except for P2, who gained only 4.6%. On his follower base, that still means over 11,000 followers, which is not chump change. Skyler Laine’s Bye-Bye Boost was 13%.

If anybody’s been wondering what happened to singers who were eliminated in prior weeks: after the Bye-Bye Boost, gains slow dramatically, then settle down to ~2% weekly. People who had lots of followers at elimination still have lots of followers (Dixon remains #2 of the Top 13, approaching 280k; Han is #4, approaching 133k). People who had modest follower bases at elimination haven’t gained a lot since (Rosado’s approaching 23k; Magrane is a bit over 30k).

Overnight (shortly before performance show to 5:30 PDT Thursday morning), percentage gains were a little larger than last week. Ranking based on WNTS score is in parentheses before the singer’s name and would be the same with or without duets.

    (2) Ledet, Joshua   8.1%

    (1) Sanchez, Jessica   3.4%

    (4) Cavanagh, Hollie   3.4%

    (3) Phillips, Philip   3.1%

These numbers don’t make a strong case for a P2 boot (he was further outside the pack last week) but if they ever indicated anything, they’d indicate that Ledet will NOT be booted.

    Good for David.
I hope he has another good bump tonight after Idol like James had with Higher Than Heaven (another non-label, but FAN picked choice, btw).

    Incipit,
Thank you for the wonderful news! (I live in Finland!)
So good to see those figures!
BTW, do you know anything new about how David’s Hard to Believe is doing in Indonesia (or did, if it’s not on the charts any longer…)?
I am anxiously waiting to see his performance on Idol tomorrow on the Internet – the show will be broadcast here (twice) next week  - we are one week behind you on Idol.
David truly deserves huge success - a wonderful career that he is happy about. He is such an immensely talented singer and musician! And a very good person. We have all been reading these great comments on him for four years!

Incipit, Do you have the overall numbers? Those are a better indicator on how the song is doing on the charts. David is #23 overall in Finnish Itunes. In UK is he’s not in Top 200 songs yet. Overall #s is a better comparison for when he performs after Idol.

Kris got an actual spin from WISX in Philly this morning. The station has been playing the song on its online stream for awhile now, but they actually played it on the radio in conjunction with the interview he did with them. Hopefully they will start giving it a few “real” spins now. Also, TVOL already has enough spins from WRMF in Florida to get an auto add from that station on Monday

I have learned here that Amazon doesn’t mean much in terms of sales, but Adam is holding steady on first page 1-20 of best sellers.  Even if it doesn’t signify much it is super nice to see.  Now 13 with green up arrow.

“Do you have the overall numbers? “

Whiskey, when I posted, TLS was #284 Overall – it was first noted in the Top 400 Overall at 7:39 AM – at #361.

    Right now – Noon, ET – it’s #182 Overall, and #11 Rock.

I wouldn’t say it doesn’t mean much – it shows interest in the album – in terms of sales numbers Amazon and online stores in general account for a small portion of the sales.  Physical copies are still the largest portion of sales.

DCAIFanHelsinki, I haven’t seen reports about “Hard to Believe” from any Indonesian fans in the last few days. The last report was HTB being played on 40 stations. If I see an update, I’ll post it for you, OK?

    Oh, and Finland Rocks!!

and #362 on Amazon Japan (what looks like the MP3 single chart)

Springboard, it is moving too fast to update – you only posted 9 minutes ago, and right now, I see #179 Overall iTunes, and #10 Rock – so TLS has moved into the Top 10 for iTunes Rock.

I posted this morning to establish a baseline for comparison after the Idol performance. It’s difficult to check for a bump on TLM, with this new limited access – but this song is highly visible.

Really, I depend on the NumberNerds – which I don’t lay claim to being. I was more involved in figuring out the lyrics. Heh.

Wow-I am surprised to see that Adam’s BTIKM is off the HAC chart already. I thought it was slowly climbing up that chart last time I noticed. (or maybe it’s been awhile since I last saw the chart numbers)

Just curious when we will see attendance figures for Scotty’s Azeala Festival concert. I think it was April 13th.

The only good news that TVOL can get at this moment is daytime spins from the stations that have been playing it for the last eight weeks.  The song won’t get more than cursory spins from other stations, or do more than the one add a week that it’s been getting for a while, until program directors are able to see that the the stations that have been playing it for almost two months are willing to increase the song’s rotations, and not just by adding more overnight spins.  Right now, there’s no indication that this is going to happen, and there’s nothing on the horizon that could cause it to happen.  Kris’ opening week sales numbers will be just another hit against the song, and won’t lead to more spins.

This is why Kris and 19 should have been taking advantage of promotional opportunities months ago, and reintroducing Kris to the public.

I have never really looked at the Rock Chart on iTunes before — I generally know what I want and go right to the artists’ pages to purchase if I’m going digital, or I get it right from the bands themselves.

So this was a revelation: The iTunes Rock Chart Top 25 (as of 11am PST)

    25. John Mayer-Daughters (2003)
    24. Boston-More Than a Feeling (1976)
    23. Queen-Bohemian Rhapsody (1975)
    22. Juliet Simms (The Voice)-Oh! Darling (2012/1969 (The Beatles))
    21. Tremonti-You Waste Your Time (2012)
    20. Kansas-Wayward Son (1976)
    19. Lynyrd Skynyrd-Free Bird (1973)
    18. Tom Petty-Free Fallin’ (1989)
    17. Train-Drops Of Jupiter (2001)
    16. The Verve-Bitter Sweet Symphony (1997)
    15. Stained-It’s Been Awhile (2008)
    14. Matt Kearny-Ships In the Night (2011)
    13. Juliet Simms (The Voice)-Cryin’ (2012/1993 (Aerosmith))
    12. The Fray-You Found Me (2009)
    11. Tony Lucca (The Voice)-Baby One More Time (2012/1999 (Britney Spears))
    10. David Cook-The Last Song I’ll Write For You (2012)
    9.   Journey-Don’t Stop Believin’ (1981)
    8.   Nicleback-Lullaby (2012)
    7.   The Gaslight Anthem-45 (2012)
    6.   Tony Lucca (The Voice)-How You Like Me Now (2012/2009 (The Heavy))
    5.   Journey-Faithfully (1983)
    4.   Juliet Simms (The Voice)-Roxanne (2012/1978 (The Police))
    3.   Juliet Simms (The Voice)-It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World (2012/1966 (James Brown)
    2.   Juliet Simms (The Voice)-Free Bird (2012/1973 (Lynyrd Skynyrd))
    1.   Tony Lucca (The Voice)-99 Problems (2012/2004 (Jay-Z))

If I’ve done the math right (and I didn’t really check it, so it could be wrong — feel free to correct), that means: Collective age of songs in the iTunes Rock Chart Top 25: 9+36+37+43+0+36+39+23+11+15+4+1+19+5+13+0+31+0+0+3+29+34+46+39+8 = 481 years

Mean age of songs in the iTunes Rock Chart Top 25: 19.24 years

Number of songs originally released in the 1960s: 2 (8%)

Number of songs originally released in the 1970s: 6 (24%) (includes Free Bird (Seriously? Seriously?) being on there twice

Number of songs originally released in the 1980s: 3 (12%) (2/3 of 1980s songs on the chart are by Journey)

Number of songs originally released in the 1990s: 3 (12%)

Number of songs originally released in the 2000s: 5 (20%)

Number of songs originally released in this decade: 5 (20%)

That is, 20% of the songs on the iTunes Rock Chart Top 25 were released in this decade and 80% were released earlier.

…there’s a lot I could say about this, but I think I’ll just go lie down and sulk for a while. Except to say that a) ff Florence or Paramore or Grace Potter were in a current release cycle, I would hope the chart would look different (maybe) and b) that breaking rock acts these days by any method other than touring their asses off must be a great way to go insane.

Most contemporary rock acts are in Alternative category. what’s left in Rock  there are mostly classic rock, hard rock, grunge and post grunge. Nah, rock is not dead, it’s just evolved and will continue to evolve.

It’s up to the promoters to release the numbers, and some promoters release them, while others don’t.

That’s good that the UK X Factor had so many sell-outs.  I remember during the season there was some concern that the concerts wouldn’t sell well, since the ratings from the season were low, and it didn’t seem like this group was as popular as previous casts.

Nice to see David Cook back on itunes chart.  I bet he will have a very good bump because he can really sing and is unique and cute too.

Haley seems to be getting pretty good updates.  Gained a position and her AI is closing in on a million.  I love her and believe the charm of her voice will take her far.

Because RCA moved onto single #2, stations have gradually moved from playing BTIKM to playing NCOE (whih you can see is slowly moving up the HAC chart)

  • Anonymous

might not ever see them. depends on whether they get reported to some official music boxscore site, such as Billboard

  • Anonymous

Haley passed Justin Bieber. He probably doesn’t care, since the single is doign so well on CHR and Rhythmic stations, but Boyfriend stalled very quickly on the HAC chart.

  • Anonymous

Sabbia, Adams BTIKM peaked at #17 for 3-4 weeks on HAC and was removed from the chart last week.

Is Kris actually heading down the charts this soon? Why is he falling down in chart position? Is a top 40 song at #40 the best we can expect?

I mainly listen to alternative myself, and I agree it’s thriving (and I also happen to think that’s where the majority of Cook’s music fits (not the singles, but a lot of the rest)), but he’s not on that chart, so I looked at the one he was on.

Curious: does anyone know where the 3 female-fronted bands I mentioned are categorized? I can’t tell from looking at iTunes. I consider them rock, but maybe Alternative in the case of the music business also means Alternative Gender. Heh.

I’m curious in case Elise ever gets to release some music — though I haven’t listened to her original stuff. She may slot into another category.

     No, he’s gaining.

the song actually moved up 1 spot from yesterday (#42) to today (#41) and  will probably be #38 or #39 when the published chart comes out on Sunday, as there are 2 or 3 songs that likely will be removed from the chart. But in terms of # of spins, the song is basically running in place right now. He has just started to do actual radio promo — he’s done several interviews the past few days and he has some radio shows coming up during the next few weeks. The question is whether RCA waited too long to have him do this stuff, and whether the stations that he is talking too will increase the spins. Some of the stations that were playing it have cut back on the spins, but on the other hand, he has seen some bigger market stations starting to spin it.

  • Anonymous

It appears that RCA was focused on having the promo really start to kick in close to the actual album release date, rather than weeks in advance. Whether that strategy was the right way to go??? Still TBD

We will never know, but I don’t think that this was the plan.  I just think that we are seeing RCA’s reaction to radio PDs not being open to giving the song a chance, the low amount of sales to hardcore fans, and the lack of a significant bounce from the AI performance.

RCA gave Kris another album, because at least one person at the label believes that he is marketable, but it’s a business, and RCA isn’t going to pay for a real promo tour, if the signs indicate that it will be hard for them to make that money back.

TVOL isn’t peaking, but it is basically in the position of standing still and waiting for other songs on the HAC chart to go recurrent or for the songs falling down the chart to fall completely off. This is not the way a song becomes a hit, not even a moderate one on HAC. The problem TVOL is having is that the stations that added early haven’t really attempted to increase their spins from 1 or 2 overnight spins. Several of these early adders are now lowering their rotations. With TVOL getting mostly overnight spins, and only 1 or 2 stations adding it a week, its growth is stagnant.

The little bit of radio promotion in the next couple of weeks may prove to be a case of too little, too late for this single. The buzz around the album release date could give the single a boost, but it doesn’t look good at this point. IMO, it’s time to move on to the next single and hope for a better run with the second choice off of TYC.

IMO, it’s time to move on to the next single and hope for a better run with the second choice off of TYC.

The problem with releasing a second single is that the reasons why PDs didn’t play TVOL have to be addressed.  I doubt that the reasons have to do with the song, even if it’s not as good as LLWD,  or even if some PDs thought it wasn’t a good fit for Hot AC.  Not only will those problems still be present, but a second single would also have to overcome what will more than likely be less than stellar album sales.

I’d have more hope for a second single, if 19 was doing anything to amp up the buzz around Kris, and to let people outside of his hardcore fanbase know that he is about to release an album.  I don’t anticipate the album release generating a lot of buzz.  So far, 19 has only booked Kris for Extra, the AI appearance, and Live With Kelly.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

Very good points. It’s all a little depressing when you look at where to go from here.

  • Anonymous

I don’t understand what RCA, who are the “experts” at this, expected would happen with TVOL. They don’t know that Kris has a small fan base? They don’t know that he needs some buzz? Maybe they need to hang out here more often!
I fear that TYC is Kris’ last chance with RCA and it’s not looking too promising imo. Idols seem to be a pretty disposable commodity with these labels.

  • Anonymous

I agree that RCA should have known about the small fan base, and my guess is that they did, but I think this is a case that shows that artists need good management and a good label.  How does RCA convince radio stations to play the music of someone who has been out of the public eye for almost two years, and who is still mostly known from being on AI three years ago?  There have to be some selling points that make Kris stand out from all of the other new artists.

It’s not like we didn’t see this same thing with David Archuleta and David Cook, and it can be successfully argued that those two were more popular than Kris, and Cook may have had a slightly more solid record at radio than Kris, and both seemed to draw more people to their shows, so how could 19 and Kris not have anticipated this, and done something to make things easier for RCA.  How about pairing him up with another artist, who stands a better chance of getting airplay, which would also be a good way to reintroduce him to the public.

  • Anonymous

Well I think Kris did his job. He made a record of (from what I can tell so far) extremely catchy pop songs that exhibit his fun loving personality and represent him well as an artist.  He is stuck with 19 as management until his contract is up so he can’t do anything about that.
From something he said in a radio interview about being happy to be in the music business “whether in a big way or a smaller way” (paraphrasing here) I think Kris is prepared for whatever happens. So that’s good I guess.

    From HDD:

Headed into the Mother’s Day weekend, it now looks as if Carrie Underwood will score her first-ever second week at #1. Shockingly, no album by Underwood has ever spent more than one week at the top. Adele, who
earlier in the week appeared as a likely challenger, may now have to settle for #2. Past history, however, suggests she can never be counted out, especially with Mother’s Day this Sunday. Here’s how it looks headed into the weekend:

    Carrie Underwood (19/Arista Nashville) 105-115k
    Adele (XL/Columbia) 90-95k
    Now 42 (Capitol/EMI) 70-75k
    Lionel Richie (Mercury Nashville) 60-65k
    Norah Jones (Blue Note/EMI) 60-65k
    *Silversun Pickups (Dangerbird) 35-40k
    One Direction (Syco/Columbia) 35-40k
    Jack White (Third Man/Columbia) 30-35k
    *Tank (Atlantic) 27-30k
    B.o.B. (Atlantic) 24-27k
    Gotye (Fairfax/Universal Republic) 24-27k
    Luke Bryan (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 24-27k
    *Keane (Interscope) 18-21k
    Smash (Columbia) 18-21k
    Nicki Minaj (Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Republic) 18-21k
    *Karmin (Epic) 18-21k

    *Debuts (5/10p)

I think that my feelings are known about this subject, the groundwork for the obstacles that Kris is facing were laid down during the first era, and from my view, everybody involved played a role, that means Kris, Jive and 19.   One of the co-writers of TVOL, Nasri, had a tweet a few weeks back, about how artists are also responsible for their own promotion and management, so just looking at the whole picture, I think that Kris is responsible too.

Now we have confirmation that David Cook was dropped, and even though I understand why he wrote some of the songs that he did on his last album, I can’t help but think what did he expect to happen, when he decided not to include any radio friendly songs, or why didn’t he also come out of hiding well in advance of releasing his album.

  • Anonymous

I get what you are saying, but for someone 23 years old not involved in the music scene in any meaningful way, I think it’s unrealistic to think Kris would know about promoting himself when he came off Idol. I think he has shown a remarkable learning curve and is much better at promoting himself now, but perhaps it’s too little too late.

How does RCA convince radio stations to play the music of someone who has been out of the public eye for almost two years, and who is still mostly known from being on AI three years ago?

But that’s not true (the “mostly known” part).  LLWD was a hit on 3 different formats.  I want to respond further to this with the example of another RCA performer who currently has a song being promoted to radio but I absolutely am NOT making the comparison to agitate fans of said performer only to make a point.  This performer’s first single from his new CD failed to connect.  It got to a point that it was getting almost 5 million audience impressions but did not sell.  However that hasn’t stopped radio from moving right on to his 2nd single.  So how is it someone can be penalized for being out of the public eye for a year making a CD (when isn’t that what musicians do?) but another one has no problem getting spins when they had a very recent failure?  Kris FAIAP has had one hit and no flops.  The Truth was pulled for whatever reason and Alright With Me never went for adds.  So why should radio be resistant to his music?  There’s a whole lot more to who and what gets played on radio beyond whether or not the music itself is any good.

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

Kris FAIAP has had one hit and no flops.  The Truth was pulled for whatever reason and Alright With Me never went for adds.

The Truth wasn’t pulled. It peaked at 17 HAC. By Idols definition it flopped.

How does RCA convince radio stations to play the music of someone who
has been out of the public eye for almost two years, and who is still
mostly known from being on AI three years ago?  There have to be some
selling points that make Kris stand out from all of the other new
    artists.

Easy.  Promote.  Promote.  Promote.  Publicize.  Get a good publicist and manager…not one who is tied to several other Idol singers.   Have the management get them on TV.  Do radio promos when the song just hits…not 6 weeks later.   Push that song when it first comes out…because no CD will sell without airplay.

When The Vision of Love first came out it was so well received it was amazing.   There was a lot of talk in the media and by various bloggers about the greatness of the song.   So the first week out the song got 13 adds.  Then what happened?  Where did RCA go?  What happened to all the praise from VP Promotion at RCA Joe Riccitelli?   Something went South and it for sure wasn’t Kris or his song.

I think since RCA is no longer with Idol they may want to get out the business.   Their Idol singer contracts go for two CDs and then that’s it.   If they don’t promote a song and a song doesn’t get played on the radio it won’t sell.

And that’s a crying shame because The Vision of Love went over so well.  RCA dropped the ball.  Plain and simple.  They could have done much more.

  • Anonymous

I’m not sure what you mean by “Idols definition” but in addition to what MissMyEm said The Truth was also doing well on iTunes and the video was a couple weeks away from being retired on Vh-1 when it was pulled from there too.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

TT was not pulled from the radio. It fell quickly down the charts, but it was not pulled from radio stations. It took two weeks for TT to drop from #17 to #30 and an additional week for it to drop from #30 to #42.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Roger-Kramjet/100003524695403 Roger Kramjet

I think that is part of the problem. 17 HAC sounds great. I mean the biggest hit Adam had was What do you want from me and it was a top 10 song and everybody knows that song. It is still getting play today. I am not sure why the expectation is so high for Idol contestants.

  • Anonymous

I was totally confused this morning because All-Access had removed 6 spins for Kris seemingly overnight. Turns out, the syndicated Dial Global was removed from the HAC panel. So that will negatively affect the spin count and bullet for any songs that were getting played by that service for this reporting period.

    Well, that stinks

  • Anonymous

Basically, only the song that make the top 10 on HAC are doing well on radio. Anything below that (unless its played in other formats) isn’t get heard by enough ears to mean much. Making the chart when you’re unknown it great but Idols are not unknowns.
