American Idol Superfans Defend Their All-Time Favorite Underdogs – Every year, a slew of hopefuls get introduced to the world via the American Idol machine, and every year, all but one of those singers get picked off, the victims of not being text-message-worthy enough for viewers at home. Among the castoffs and runners-up are some singers who might not have gone all the way, but who turned in memorable moments and killer performances that defined their seasons. Popdust asked eight writer super-fans to talk about their favorite unsung contestants from years past. I contributed to this…guess who I picked? :) – Read more at Popdust

‘American Idol’: Forecasting the Season 12 Premiere Ratings – American Idol returns Wednesday night for its twelfth season and its second revamped judges table since Simon Cowell departed in 2010. And that premiere all but guarantees a drop in ratings. In addition to broadcast TV’s general downward trend in same-day viewing, the last two runs of American Idol debuted to significant year-to-year drops. The Voice seems to be the darling of the genre since premiering in 2011, but as the below graph illustrates, American Idol has thus far kept its head well above the ratings watermark set by its closest competition. The recent opening month of The Voice averaged more than 6.5 million viewers and nearly two demo ratings points shy of American Idol’s average last January. – Read more at Hollywood Repor

‘American Idol’ Season 12: Keith Urban brings ‘Voice’ lessons to his judging –  “I’ve been racking up some serious miles,” friendly four-time Grammy winner Urban tells Zap2it, having visited such “Idol” audition locations as San Antonio, Oklahoma City and Charlotte, N.C. “But I’m a musician, so I’ve toured my whole life. It’s something I enjoy doing.” And thus far, at least, Urban also enjoys doing “American Idol.” Previously a judge for a season on the Australian version of “The Voice,” he says, “The side that I genuinely like is being able to maybe help somebody. When someone walks onstage, and they’re just the most unlikely-looking person for this, then they sing and you just go, ‘Gosh! You just need the slightest bit of help, and you’re off and running,’ that’s a wonderful opportunity for people. And that’s what I love.” – Read more at Zap2it

Well, not quite countless, perhaps, as we’ve come up with exactly 100 moments that encapsulated the show for us and still burn fresh in our memory years after they were first aired on FOX’s brightest stage, with that duh-nuh, duh-nuh, duh-nuh, du-nuh, duh, rrrrrrrEAAARR music quickly to follow in the background. The wacky judges, the over-ambitious contestants, and oh so much Ryan Seacrest—we’ve got it all here. – Read more at Popdust

Mariah has a video interview from this afternoon on NBC 5 News, Chicago, with a transcript HERE

One of the questions was interesting, in light of the recent 19R discussion:

What’s the thing you wished you would’ve known when you started out?

“Not to sign a bunch of stupid contracts. I gave away a lot of stuff!”

But when asked about contestants singing her songs, she had nice things to say about David Cook, even if she drew a blank on others who had sung her material:

“A couple of years back, David Cook sang my song. He sang ‘Always Be My Baby,’ and I was mentoring. He was great. It was a day that…it was just like, ‘Wow.’ He took ‘Always Be My Baby,’ which was a number one song for me years ago and he did a great acoustic twist on it.”
