Idol Headlines for 06/07/12 -The Evening Edition

The first day of American Idol auditions are underway in Los Angeles at Dodgers Stadium. Ryan Seacrest tweeted, “14 days after the finale…today is our first day of @AmericanIdol season 12!”

KTLA reports that “hundreds” of hopefuls turned out this morning. Hudreds? usually by now, we have some sort of estimate of how many turned out to audition, but I can’t find a number yet. Hm. Are potential contestants too busy auditioning for X Factor?

ETA: This report says 2,500 hopefuls lined up this morning at 5 am! WTF? (KPCC)

Here’s a lyric from country singer, Joe Eady’s new song “AM Country Heaven”. See if you can figure out who he is talking about, ““Well, they sing about Jesus, they sing about Jones/And they sing of American pride/But they’re all too damn clean, polished like stones/And they won’t sing about cheatin’ and lies
Well it’s all about idols and pretty blond hair/And how many trucks you can sell.” I’d say that’s a pretty solid shot at Carrie Underwood and some of her fellow country superstars. Eady is from the Fort Worth area. The song is from his new self-titled album. Read more at 29-95

Kellie Pickler Brings Wounded Marine as Her Date to the 2012 CMT Music Awards – Aw. I wondered who the young man was sitting next to Kellie at last night’s CMT Video Awards. He’s Sgt. Sean DeBevoise, a Marine who was severely wounded during a 2006 deployment to Iraq. DeBevoise walked the red carpet with Kellie and brought along his service dog Rusty. “I am esctatic about being here at the CMT Music Awards with Kellie,” DeBevoise said Wednesday night, “even more to consider her a friend. She is the most sincere person I know. She is an angel.” – Read more at Taste of Country

Carrie Underwood Gives Engagement Advice to Miley and Liam – Carrie Underwood has advice for the newly engaged couple, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth. “If you can be engaged for a while, plan everything slow and take your first couple of years just to really hang out.” I think that’s code for “19 is WAY to young to be engaged.” See the video at ExtraTV

Idol Winner Kris Allen Loves Tekken – Kris Allen performed and participated in the (RED)RUSH charity games tournament at E3. “This is definitely something that I care about and when Bono’s involved with it, you’re not going to say no,” said Allen. “I’ve spent a lot of time in Africa and helping out with AIDS [charities], and so if I can help out in any way, it’s great.” – Read more at IGN

Simon Cowell’s Syco to Co-Produce U.K. Cooking Show – Simon Cowell is bringing a new cooking show to ITV. The production will be Food, Glorious Food! and is described on its web site as “the biggest ever search for Britain’s best-loved recipe,” it will “scour the country in search of one very special dish” made by an amateur cook. The winner will get a chance to get their recipe on the shelves of retail giant Marks & Spencer and win £20,000 ($31,000). – Read more at The Hollywood Reporter

Here’s a short twitvid of Taylor Hicks introducing David Cook w/performance snippet from that GlamRock benefit that was held a few weeks ago.  Longer video clips are being promised after the completion of editing.

What, seriously? 2,500 hopefuls in freaking Los Angeles?? Has the talent pool diminished to such a degree?  Wow.

  • Anonymous

Thanks for posting that link! That was very cool… Taylor is and has always been one of the most gracious Idol winners and one to give public support to his fellow alums.

L.A. is a jaded place. I bet they get larger crowds elsewhere … like in the South. ;-) Hee.

That being said, if numbers are down, then they won’t be able to dismiss so readily good singers who don’t fit whatever “type” they’re looking for that year, like they have in the past.

However, regarding the competition, not one of the other shows has proven that *they* can create a so-called star … unless we’re gonna count the UK X-Factor and those tuneless One Direction kiddies.

  • OffLeash

2500? Looks like next season might have a lot of plants lol. More than usual anyway.

  • teacup

I wonder if auditions will be down in every city this year. It wouldn’t surprise me. Idol is stale and people are more cynical now than ever about what it takes to win the show.

  • Guest

Season 10 in Los Angeles only had 3000 hopefuls. So really, it isnt that far down. The date is also early for a lot of people, many college and high school kids are finishing school/finals.

Joe Eady, another “pure artist” horrified by the state of country music. Poor you, boo-hoo. If an “artist” wants to get some attention, taking a swipe at the superstars is one surefire way of achieving it. lol

  • Guest

Doubt that. The southern cities normally get the bulk.

And idol has been called “stale” for years lol.

Ummm, I don’t think 19 is too young for marriage.  I married at 18.

  • Anonymous

Pretty sure mediocre white guys with guitars will be auditioning in droves since that type is the only one that wins.

  • Guest

They audition every year so it’s nothing new. I’m sure Jessica Sanchez inspired more Filipinos to audition this year too.

Like Candice Glover. I couldn’t BELIEVE she didn’t make it last season. Here are Candice and Josh doing some crazy churchy vocalizing during Hollywood week:

Not a shock but Javier confirms hes no longer with Universal.

Um ok I like Javier a lot and I totally get what he means about feeling like the label didnt support him, but I dont buy for a minute this separation was a result of Javier sitting around pondering what to do. The article also mentions he’ll be touring with M5 so nice to know Adam is throwing him a bone.

On a different note the People out tomorrow has the exclusive pics of J.R. Martinez’ baby. Sidebar cover pic and adorable pics inside. what a little doll she is!

I didn’t marry that young, I was 25, but I met my husband at 21 and still together so it can work.

I think a lot of people picture Miley as this wild child because of the videos and the tabloids.  But its clear she was raised in traditional values so no matter how crazy she was on stage, or the partying deep inside, she was still a good girl that wants to be married with the white dress and the whole nine yards.  I think she may actually have more experience than the average 19 year old anyway.

Worst case, Liam is a pretty cute first husband.

Joe Eady, another “pure artist” horrified by the state of country music.

I agree with him, but that’s not who he should be pointing a finger at.  Those superstars wouldn’t be recording it if it didn’t get played on radio and nobody bought it.  In the end, those responsible for the state of music — country and otherwise — are always mainly the consumers.

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

In the end, those responsible for the state of music — country and otherwise — are always mainly the consumers.

Demand is almost always created. If you play something often enough, and it’s the only thing you play, people kind of get used to it and before they know it … you’ve told them what they want to buy.

  • BonnieDee

Me too.  I married on my 18th birthday and we will be celebrating our 30th anniversary in August.

Wentworth1978: Joe Eady, another “pure artist” horrified by the state of country music.
Poor you, boo-hoo. If an “artist” wants to get some attention, taking a
swipe at the superstars is one surefire way of achieving it. lol

To be honest, songs from the Texas country scene about how mainstream country’s sold out or whatever are about as common as songs from the mainstream country scene about trucks, America is great, and all the stuff Jason Eady’s complaining about. It’s like a crutch to try to get cred or attention and more often than not, the song’s not very good nor does it become a hit. Jason Eady’s song hasn’t gone anywhere on Texas Regional Radio that I can see. There’s actually a line in this song about how he misses when the women were ugly and the men were over 40 because that meant they had to have something to say. I was like “Who’s he calling ugly?”

Then I remembered Peter Cooper of the Tennessean, who’s as far from an Idol fan as you’re gonna get. A year ago after Scotty and Lauren were t2 on Idol he wrote a column about how, despite what some people had thought would happen, Idol has not killed country music. One of the points he made was that before Idol, country labels were signing plenty of women who looked like supermodels and who also sang like supermodels (LOLZ). His point was that at least with Idols you’re getting people who’ve proven they can sing live (it’s their artistry he’ll usually call into question. He also hates cowrites).

The song also has a line complaining about how Nashville labels are too scared to release 3/4 time songs (waltzes) because they’re too country. Well, Eli Young Band recently went to #1 with Crazy Girl, Jana Kramer has a t20 hit with Why Ya Wanna, and it’s looking like Lauren’s about to release a 3/4 time single cowritten by Carrie (Eighteen Inches). That’s just in the past year. And, Jason Eady’s taken a long and winding road with many different musical directions before deciding he’s going to rescue country music so, it’s not like he’s in any place to judge people with real country roots who are trying to experiment a little and not just recreate old school country. And, you know there is a very pretty blonde Idol who released a heck of a traditional country album herself this year, though I guess its lack of traction at radio does reinforce one of his points.

I’ve got plenty of problems with the mainstream country scene and I would agree there is a gross overabundance of guys trying to get away with mediocre truck songs, beer songs, and rah rah America is great songs. I just think this guy’s gone about expressing his in a really lame, cliche way.

You left out that part about how those LA auditions were extremely last minute and tacked on at the end of the cycle.

When Idol went to LA in the summer of 2006 between 10K and 20K (depending on which account you read) showed up in Pasadena to try out. That’s a pretty significant difference.

  • Anonymous

That’s what I thought.  At least 10,000 seems more like it.  Maybe all of the talent has been tapped???

Here’s the clip of Kris on E!New. It was a very short segment. Looks like the pregnancy rumor has replaced the pier cop story…

In a way, there wasn’t much notice(time wise) for these either. Weren’t the cities announced around top 3? That’s like 3 weeks ago.
    Not even a months notice.

    http://www.mjsbigblog.com/american-idol-finale-feat-scotty-mccreery-rihanna-season-12-auditions-begin-in-la-newark-chicago.htm

On the other hand the S10 LA auditions were announced September 3rd which was almost 20 days in advance. Almost the same time frame.

On the other hand the S10 LA auditions were announced September 3rd
which was almost 20 days in advance. Almost the same time frame.

Still, those LA auditions were tacked on at the very end of the cycle, and not very well publicized. Six or 7 cities had already held auditions.

Season 12 auditions were announced by Ryan during Top 3 on the show in front of millions of viewers. And it’s the very 1st audition–which I expected to generate a lot more excitement.

We’ll see how the rest of the audition cities go. But if the attendance continues to be down, I don’t think there will be any way to spin it.

Isn’t it too soon to start auditioning?  What’s wrong with this picture?  They don’t even have all three judges confirmed.

  • Kylee

Even if it is just 2500, I’m sure there is still a great chance of great talent in that crowd.

  • Kylee

And yes, I can already hear the cheers of bitter idol/WGWG haters from a mile away. :P

  • Anonymous

They don’t need the judges for this first round of auditions. The hopefuls sing in front of a bunch of producers and other staff member for this first wave of cuts — not in front of J-Lo, Randy and Steven.

  • Lombe Chileshe

There was no other place I could post this, so I have to post it here.

For most of last week we JS fans have been trying to purchase and download her ‘Change Nothing’ single only to be met by “problem/error messages”? preventing them from going through the purchase. It has apparently changed now. But sounds and smells monkey business. I’ve talked to a couple of people unable to download Jessica’s Change Nothing and they’re all living in Chicago, Seattle and Manhattan.

Also, The Idol Journey EP’s are available on Walmart for pre-order, and she has been in the Top 3 for over a week. Right now she’s Number 2 on the best-sellers list and Number 1 on the Pre-Order list. I dont know how good the Walmart sales are, but It’s good to see Jessica on Top of those lists!    http://www.walmart.com/browse/Music/_/N-2p4h?ic=96_0&tc=100&path=0:4104&ref=125873.125873&search_sort=5&selected_items=+&depts=T&catNavId=4104&povid=cat4104-env205212-moduleC092911-lLinkRR1Seeall100BestSellingAlbums

Agree with what you said. Ultimately it’s still the consumers who dictates what kind of music that is supplied by the music industry.

    2,500 in LA.

    That’s about right.

For the most part, musicians in LA are looking for real and long term success and only do Idol when they get close to the cut-off age.

  • s k

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the number of contestants auditioning this year for Idol was down substantially this year.  They are no longer the only game in town; so couple that with the 5 season trend of the same winner and people will almost surely lose interest.

Well, if only the winner is guaranteed a contract now – plus the audience seems to gravitate towards one type of winner- plus people know that the alternative signing options are paying peanuts LOL- then I can see a decrease in a place like LA, which is full of experienced musicians who have other options to pursue a contract at their disposal. But when we get to other parts of the country things could be different.
