HOLY CRAP. American Idol has a You Tube Channel! FINALLY. American Idol has a YOU TUBE CHANNEL! There are handy dandy playlists for the Auditions and Hollywood Rounds. And worth noting–FULL performances from the Las Vegas Performance Challenge rounds! American Idol YouTube ChanneLas Vegas Round Playlist.

Adam Lambert – ‘I’m Not Trying To Outdo Freddie Mercury’ – What songs do you want to sing? And which ones don’t you? “We really haven’t gotten there yet, I just was emailing Brian a week or two ago and I was asking him, ‘What’s the setlist gonna be?’ It’s gonna be a team decision, obviously Brian and Roger are the boss, so whatever they wanna do I’m up for, I’m just happy to be there.” “I’m really excited to perform ‘Another One Bites The Dust, that’s one of my favourites. I’m interested to see if we’ll be doing ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and whatever capacity it is, it’s quite a vocal undertaking with all the parts, so I don’t know if they’re gonna be other vocalists onstage or what. That’ll be pretty intense, to see how we approach that one.” – Read more at NME

Pia Toscano: Katsuya Stunner – Kicking off her weekend a bit early, Pia Toscano was spotted out to dinner at Katsuya restaurant in Los Angeles last night (February 23). The “American Idol” alum was all smiles and looked absolutely fantastic in a sleeveless red cocktail dress as she worked her magic for the paparazzi. See the Photos at Celebrity Gossip

‘Essence’ honors black women in Hollywood – The event also paid tribute to Whitney Houston, who died Feb. 11, by playing her music throughout lunch. Jordin Sparks, Houston’s co-star in the upcoming film Sparkle, remembered Houston before performing a song from the film: “She went from being this unreachable supernova pop star to my co-star to my friend.” – Read more at USA Today

Jordin Sparks On Whitney Houston: ‘She Was An Incredible Woman’ – “I don’t know how I’m gonna do in there. We’ll see,” Jordin told Access Hollywood on the red carpet before the event. “We’ll see what happens. If I choke up… “I’ll get it together,” she continued. “Have to try and keep it in.” “It definitely makes me very emotional,” she told Access. “I looked up to her and I sang her songs and then all of a sudden I was in a movie with her and I got to see her face-to-face, and she was so kind and she was so sweet. “I was already going to do it and sing a song from the movie and everything like that and then all recent events happened, and now I’m going to be singing a song that she actually sang, but is also in the movie, from the original, it’s called ‘Look Into Your Heart,’” – Read more at Access Hollywood

WWE stars, musician, actress lead anti-bullying rally at La Mirada’s Los Coyotes Middle School – LA MIRADA – A group of entertainers from the movie, music and wrestling world brought an anti-bullying message Thursday to Los Coyotes Middle School. Michael Gregory “The Miz” Mizanin and Diva Eve Marie Torres of World Wrestling Entertainment, rock musician James Durbin, an “American Idol” star and actress Rachel Cook spoke to about 650 students at the school. “Every day when I got to school, I was bullied all day,” he said. “I got to the point of where I was late to school every single day.” – Read more at Whittier Daily News

Theater Talkback: Betty Buckley on Why She Took on ‘American Idol’ – Since that exchange, the debate has continued in blogs and newspapers. And the popularity of “American Idol” means the discussion is still worth having. I think it’s important that young performers be encouraged — not discouraged — in their dreams to sing, whether on Broadway or in the pop arena, by a show that purports to celebrate great singing. The lines of demarcation about this style vs. that style of singing are not hard and fast. This is in truth a matter of “style,” and not the essence of what constitutes a great voice. – Read more at the New York Times

American Idol has a You Tube Channel! FINALLY.
Yes, it’s about time! watching laggy videos on the AI website and enduring those cheesy ford commercials never really appeal to me. And it’s not like these videos never leak to YT anyway – that’s the only place I ever watch ‘em. Good move AI. Good move.

About freakin’ time. Now we no longer have to scrounge around and listen to versions featuring the television set it was taped on (and the gracious uploaders yappy little dog). If only they could also do this for past seasons!

David A. has been trending in one way or another all over the place for days.  It started when he left the Philippines.  They trended a farewell message.  US then trended a welcome back message, and now he, Josh Bradley, and Nandito Ako have been trending in some form for days.  Great to see so much support for someone who actually deserves it.

Thanks, mmb! That is a really great article. I love how Adam is handling everything so far—and that guy asked some tough questions. I think there might be a second part coming?

The Queen gig is really going to be a huge undertaking. I don’t know how Adam is going to have time for everything, although I’m sure he will find a way. It’s just going to be an exhausting spring/summer for him.

Taylor Hicks sings a brand new song on Tennessee Mornings called Country Living! A LOT more country sounding than we’re used to with him! Not a fan of country music in general, but this one is cool… hope it’s on the new CD.

That YouTube channel is awesome. I checked out the Vegas rounds trying to get a glimpse of some of the people I hadn’t heard sing and it was an eye-opener. You can see why some folks got cut. Some people can sing but they were awkward on stage, some had no presence at all, some kept sliding off key, and some had weird ennunciations or over-emoted. And Johnny was a hot mess during his group round. A. Hot. Mess. It was so bad it would have made me cut him too.

I think Candace went sharp a couple of times. It made me wonder if she had problems with that all along. But Ariel was awesome, so I am still mystified as to why she was cut. I have a new appreciation for Chelsea Sorrel now, I am solidly a fan. I think she’s the best country girl.

  • Kitwana

Sorry American Idol. Way too late for a YouTube channel. If you really cared about the fans, rather than squeezing every last penny out of them, you should have done this years ago when you had 25 million viewers and were a pop culture phenom with routine water cooler buzz. Now it just smacks of desperation. So sad but no sympathy from me. Wonder what else they’ll do this year “for the fans”.

    From Fox_Research:

    At 8p, #AmericanIdol was No. 1 in its hour in A18-49 (4.4/13), A18-34 (2.9/9, tie w/ CBS), Total Viewers (15.4 mil) & Teens (2.6/10)

The good news is that the show was still number one in so many categories last night.  The bad news, that adult rating probably hasn’t been that low since the first season.  Another thing, even though the adult rating is low, the total viewer numbers aren’t declining that much.

The show is losing its 18-49 year old viewers, because with the casting, they are trying to appeal to the wrong demographic.

curly_yenta: Could just be me, but couldn’t get that link to work. Took me to a page with error message:

I saw Taylor this morning and liked the song. I don’t keep up with him very closely and didn’t realize it was new. Also didn’t realize he has been living in Nashville since October. Said he is writing with local people and to look for a bit more of a country sound, although this particular song could be classified as country/blues in my book.

For those unfamiliar with this program, Nashville’s Fox affiliate has a four-hour morning program each week day, and they have musical guests each day. As you can imagine considering the location, the guests are usually top notch. This week was one of their American Idol weeks, which they usually do a couple times per year. Guests included Lacey Brown and Aaron Kelly (both sounding better than ever), Schlyler Dixon, Phil Stacey and Taylor. Kendra Chantelle, who has been on before, was scheduled to appear but I think she had the flu and couldn’t make it.

I am so nervous and excited for Adam performing a full set with Queen. The Sonisphere Festival is more of a heavy metal leaning crowd who are not known for being the most open and accepting group in the world. It helps that Justin Hawkins of the Darkness tweeted Adam yesterday saying he was so excited and is looking forward to sharing the stage with Adam and cannot wait to hear him singing the Queen catalog!

Not sure where to ask this, but Windmills what do you think of the switch for Mike Dungan from Capitol Nashville to UMG (Scotty and Lauren’s label) Nashville?

Also, more dates are popping up for Scotty on Brad’s summer tour (so maybe that one date where Easton Corbin is opening was an off for Scotty)…

And this Sunday, the ACM nominees are doing a special concert this Sunday to be taped for the GAC special to be aired in March…

That interview with Adam about the Queen gig at Sonisphere is fantastic. He has a great head on his shoulders and is very grounded in his perspective about it. Humble yet confident. Thrilled to do it, recognizing the challenge, and ready to take it on.

Sonisphere may typically be a metal festival, but it doesn’t seem to be this year. More classic rock with some metal and newer rock added in.

Judging from the way Adam answered those questions, he seems well prepared for all the press.

Adam singing Another One Bites the Dust is going to ROCK! I know this show is going to be sensational!

  • cwm

escape – I understand your perspective, but did you read the article and see what Adam actually said? Ignore the provocative headline – Adam is very humble and respectful in his actual statements about Freddie and his own role in performing and interpreting the songs. For example:

Q: You’re standing in for possibly the greatest frontman ever…

Adam: “Yeah but you know, the way I look at it is I’m not trying too imitate him or outdo him or compete in any way, that’s not even in my mind at all, I think its really an honour to be asked to sing the music that the band wrote and get up there and put on a good show. If people are too busy trying to compare they’re not going to enjoy the music.”

Q: Do you think it can ever work as well with a new singer?

Adam: “It’s just different. Nothing is gonna beat the original, no-one’s ever going to be better than Freddie Mercury, never. But I don’t think that’s the point, I don’t think it’s a competition, it’s about music and it’s about making people feel something, it’s not about beating out the original.”

  • Anonymous

Oh Adam, please do your homework if you don’t want to upset QUEEN fans! As I am sure Brian and Roger will tell you, they never performed Bohemian Rhapsody all the way through, live onstage. If you were to do it, you would have to record all the parts in the operatic section and have your voice and the other band members voices, overlayed one upon the other just as they did. If you do try to do it live all the way you will probably have a portion of your audience leave the room, just as band members always walked off the stage while the recording was being played.

  • Anonymous

Actually I think Adam is well aware of how they have performed Bohemian Rhapsody in the past, from both his comments in this interview

I’m interested to see if we’ll be doing ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and whatever
capacity it is, it’s quite a vocal undertaking with all the parts, so I
don’t know if they’re gonna be other vocalists onstage or what.
    That’ll
be pretty intense, to see how we approach that one.”

and there was another interview where he was clearer in describing how layered this song is.

  • LVD

CaseyJ performed two songs on the Sony Boat last night. He did “Lets dont call it a night” and “Crying on a suitcase”, it is the first time he performed that song, and it is a rocking, upbeat song although the title makes it seem more like a ballad.

@TammyGooGoo He did the single & Crying On A Suitcase — both AMAZING! He had some tech diff at the start, but rallied & crowd LOVED him

ITA with Betty Buckley. It has always annoyed me when Randy or Simon have said a singer is ‘too Broadway.’ If a young Garland or Streisand auditioned for Idol I guess they would also be ‘too Broadway.’ To me this is madness. What is bad about singing great? Because they’re trying to discover a pop singer? Except when they’re not, and they’re discovering a rock singer or a country singer? Or a jazz singer?

Granted they have to draw the line somewhere, I guess. AI doesn’t have opera singers or rappers – okay, that’s not pop – but then they have country singers, which isn’t pop, either. I’ve never really understood the genre demarcations of the show, tbh. To me this has never been very clear. It just seems arbitrary – i.e., whatever Randy says or Simon says, that’s what it is.

Aw even though a translation from English to Finnish then back to English makes the quotes sound a teeny bit stilted, it still comes through that Adam’s legit starry eyed in love with Sauli. So cute. And I love Sauli’s family’s teasing Adam about the whole overblown brouhaha in Helsinki.

ETA: LOL forever that the article actually calls him Finland’s son-in-law.

  • windmills

Lexie: Not sure where to ask this, but Windmills what do you think of the switch for Mike Dungan from Capitol Nashville to UMG (Scotty and Lauren’s label) Nashville?

It’s the first of many changes that’ll take place since Universal bought EMI (which is the label group that includes Capitol Nashville). As the staffs get consolidated you can expect more departures in all departments including promo, and you can expect some of the people who were part of Luke Lewis’s regime (he’s apparently moving somewhere else within the Universal family but I haven’t seen where) to go with him. Keith, Lady A, Eric Church, Darius Rucker, and others are now in the same label family as Scotty, Lauren, and all the other Universal acts.

These changes usually take at least a year or two for their full personnel effect to be known, and then you start seeing the changes in their promo tactics and who they sign. With Scotty and Lauren, they obviously got signed and their 1st albums developed under Luke Lewis so you might get a different approach from Mike Dungan for their sophomore albums. It’s hard to say what that different approach might be. Mike Dungan’s definitely the guy who told Darius Rucker that all the super traditional country songs he wanted for his debut country album wouldn’t fly and he told him to write more contemporary stuff. But, now that Darius’s momentum at country radio is weaker maybe they’ll change tactics. Mike Dungan’s also the guy who’s let Eric Church do what he wants and look at him now.

These kind of changes are usually awkward and sometimes stuff like single promo can suffer, depending on the act. The new label head’s probably less invested in acts he didn’t sign but looking at Scotty and Lauren, I don’t think Luke Lewis had the time to get really, really invested in them. I think it’s good Scotty and Lauren have been able to establish them on the charts with their albums before the changes took place because it’ll assure them of getting some promo priority as the new guys come in. And, by the time they put out their 2nd albums a lot of the awkward transition stuff’ll be completed so it shouldn’t really affect their sophomore album promo. Too, their sophomore albums will be done with and promoted by the same new regime so everybody should be all in.

Thanks for the other Scotty tidbits. Nice to see he’ll still be touring with Brad.

I’m actually a little surprised Carrie joined twitter! I hope it winds up being a fun thing for her and her fans.

I’m definitely on boat show video watch, hoping to find good video of CaseyJ, Kellie, and Carrie performing (we’ve got Good Girl vid but I’m wanting video of her performing Someday When I Stop Loving You).

Idol should use its YT channel to put up video of past performances that we’ve heard about but never have seem on t.v. For example — Kara raved about Kris’ Hollywood week performance of Michael Buble’s “Everything,” but we’ve never seen it. And I’m sure there are dozens of other performances from other ex-Idol contestants that we’ve only heard about that fans would like to finally have a chance to see.

The music press (and their need to connect tweets to acts) made Carrie Underwood join Twitter!

The signal rippers made AI establish a Youtube account!

Now, I don’t believe that anyone ever has to use these social media accounts, but if one doesn’t stake their claim on the interwebs, someone else will fill in with unauthorized activities.

Hopefully CU’s account will point to interesting updates and the AI account will backfill with good footage from prior seasons.

  • ronnie

Singing at the EMA with Queen didn’t help Adam’s flop single any (it didn’t make anyone want to buy him in the future) so not sure why anyone thinks this upcoming Queen appearance is going to  help his music, though he might get some press.

  • windmills

standtotheright: Hopefully CU’s account will point to interesting updates and the AI account will backfill with good footage from prior seasons.

Good wishes! Carrie’s blogged and tweeted to confirm it’ll be both her and her team tweeting. I feel like the most interesting updates we’ll get from Carrie will be occasional indications of Ace and Penny’s latest antics. But, you never know!

I definitely saw the pic of Scotty with King George, Lexie, and Scotty’s tweet about meeting him. What a thrill that must have been for Scotty. Funny tweet by Scotty to welcome Carrie to Twitter. I actually think she could take some cues from him as far as how he handles it.

Carrie’s apparently performing a private concert tonight in Beverly Hills according to this tweet.

  • Anonymous

I think you might have answered your own question here.  The EMAs didn’t really generate a ton of press because, for one thing, it was a surprise appearance, so there was no preliminary, anticipatory hype, and for another, the performance was a 7-minute, 3-song medley in front of around 7,000 people (if I’m remembering the attendance correctly.  It may have been fewer).  Sonisphere is a much larger event, with an anticipated audience of 60,000+, the performance will be a full set, and the media knows about it months ahead of time, meaning that Adam’s name will be springing up in the press over several months right as he’s releasing his new album. I can imagine people’s curiosity about Queen’s Sonisphere frontman choice being piqued enough to check Adam out. It’s great additional promotion for him that really could result in new fans and/or increased sales.

This article from MTV sums up the problems of this season of AI, including the casting.
    http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1679844/american-idol-season-11.jhtml

The leading contestants so far this year on “Idol” fall into two or three predictable camps: overreaching, throwback R&B belters, quirky imitators of no-longer-relatable stars or ultra-twangy country gals. Where are the edgy R&B divas like Rihanna? The cute boy singers like Justin Bieber? The hip-hop-influenced Drake wannabes? Hell, where are the Carrie Underwoods who can deftly mix pop and country? “The X Factor” and “The Voice” eagerly embrace singers of every color, style and persuasion. So are you telling me that there was not one woman of color out of the tens of thousands who auditioned worthy of the semifinal round? Have we become a nation of (almost exclusively) blond, female Mariah/Christina copycats?

Meanwhile, the first 24 semifinalists put through by “Idol” this week are almost without exception as blandly interchangeable (and old-fashioned) as Lopez’s spangly tops.

It’s not like season-one “Voice” winner Javier Colon has set the world on fire, but at least that show focuses on mentoring and nurturing talent of any age, shape and style, rather than serving up cookie-cutter slot fillers.

  • Anonymous

    Yes girlygirl,
I want to see Kris’ Hollywood performance(s) and how about when he was singing with another guy in the judges room to get to the top 32.
I’m still mad that Idol did not think that sing off was important enough to air ( they showed M. Sarver instead). I want to see what made Simon, Randy, Paula and Kara decide to send him to top 32 rather than the other guy.

Kris had such an incomplete Idol run as far as I’m concerned. Sigh.

Especially as that is not his goal.  Adam will be Adam – not an imitator.  That’s spectacular enough.

It is funny that we have a dance remix, dubstep, acoustic, and a small snippet that’s getting played in a PSA, but not the original.  At least all of the versions show that the song has good bones, and a potentially infectious chorus.

Yes, as a performer Justin Hawkins knows what it’s like to stand up in front of a crowd – especially one such as Adam will face where a nasty minority will throw everything at him – perhaps even literally.  Guy’s got balls of steel.

  • Anonymous

The really great thing about this is that Adam didn’t need US radio to get this gig. He got this solely based on vocal and performance talent not how many CDs and singles he has sold. Fronting Queen is beyond huge for Adam’s career. I have said this before but this kind of gig puts him beyond radio a little bit. If he pulls this off, and I have no doubt he will, it will earn him respect, cred and exposure from people who would never have taken a second look. Being forever linked to rock legends, priceless.

  • Anonymous

Justin has always spoken very admiringly of Adam. It’s great that they are playing at the same event.

  • mmb

Haven’t seen anyone – Adam, fans, media – claim that the raison d’être for performing with Queen is for Adam to sell more records. I’m sure Adam is doing it for the honor and the experience – as would any artist asked to perform at a major festival with their childhood musical heroes. ( he probably gets a nice paycheck too…).

Honestly, I thought that Idol’s casting this year wasn’t so much “old fashioned” as much as it was going for a bunch of Adeles, Grace Potter and Florence & The Machine types vocally on the girls side. Maybe you can throw in Jessie J. I guess those people are throwbacks, but they have achieved some success in the present day. Throw in a range of country singers and Glee types and you have it about covered IMO.

The guys are a bunch of colorful characters like last year.

What would REALLY help to me is if they had them sing some more current songs. Someone like Jessica Sanchez absolutely has the attitude and voice to convincingly sing Beyonce & Rihanna type songs, the real question is will she get the chance?

I did LOL a bit at the skipping over the fact that Melanie Amaro and Josh Krajik are just as much throwbacks as this cast is supposed to be. Plus he singe out Eben as a standout “contemporary” type too. Heh. Eben is pure Broadway/Glee, nothing pop teen hearthrob about him IMO.

It helped get him the gig at sonisphere. BTW, BTIKM hasn’t been released in the UK yet. Release date is expected to be around march 14th

I would *love* it if they could find a female that could pull off Rihanna-style pop songs, but I don’t watch much of the audition episodes to know if they have many of those types auditioning or not.  But yes, let them sing contemporary songs to see if any of them have the chops for it.

I think the main point he’s making is that it’s not a diverse cast.  It’s mostly white and all heterosexual as far as we know.  It’s a safe and predictable cast for idol because they are catering to that demographic that votes very conservatively.  I guess the Voice and X-Factor have a viewership that’s younger and accepts diversity more easily.  The older and more rigid audience still watches idol.

Really loving Justin Hawkins right now :)

  • Anonymous

I don’t think that anyone cares about the sexuality of the contestants, and I think it’s a safe bet that they are not all heterosexual.  Either way, what matters is the performances, and so far, the performance style of too many in the top 24 seem to be very similar.

A more diverse cast is going to bring in a more diverse and larger audience.

I have to laugh a little at the posts about whether Adam singing with Queen will help sell singles or get him attention. I mean I know the focus tends to be be on the business end of things most of the time. But hey, these people are artists. The do what they do because they love it. They were doing it before they had singles, or careers. Like, to me, Adam singing with Queen is just cool and I can only say, congrats, Adam. Nice gig. Hope it’s great.

  • Valentin432

I’m guessing the reason why the producers want a say in the contestants choice next week is to get more current songs and more uptempo.

Contestants shy away from those because it’s harder for them to stand out since those tracks are a lot about the production.
The best way to make an impact is going acapella or close and sing a slow ballad that allows you to do some vocal acrobatics.

And I interpret Adam’s comments as to say he doesn’t understand how they did it before. Having other vocalist onstage IS NOT how QUEEN traditionally performed the song.

His wondering how they would do it denotes a lack of understanding as to how it was done before. Simple as that.

It doesn’t matter other than the way the band members left the stage was a type of pact they made with their fans. They were not going to lip synch and knew that the sound quality could never live up to what they did in the studio. They usually got applause as they left the stage and applause when they returned from fans who appreciated the effort.

American Idol is being humble and learning with other two shows that already have You Tube channels. Good for them. Maybe they’ll recover some points from this horrendous downfall.

Great article on Queen and Adam.   Also nice statement from Justin Hawkins to Adam.   There are many who appreciate the talent Adam has.   I am hoping that there will be a DVD made during this portion of the concert.   It will sell people.

I don’t know what to think about this post…  Are these people that crazy?

Eh there was the same sort of talk about that kind of hostile reception from the Prodigy and Korn fans before Adam played Maxidrom. And what he got instead was Russian fangirls waving cutout paper hearts and purple balloons and grudging compliments from the metalheads at the festival. I’m not saying it won’t be a challenge, both Brian and Roger have said that, and I’m sure Adam is well aware. But I think most people will just be there for a great big (probably superfun drunken) singalong of some of their favorite music.

  • Anonymous

I think the styles being old fashion is a problem, but not as big of a problem as the types and styles of singers being very limited.  It seems like there was a time where the top 12 had more diversity in terms of styles and genres, but that has changed over the past four or five seasons.

  • Anonymous

What would REALLY help to me is if they had them sing some more current songs. Someone like Jessica Sanchez absolutely has the attitude and voice to convincingly sing Beyonce & Rihanna type songs, the real question is will she get the chance?

That’s interesting you say that. Before her YouTube videos were taken down, many of Jessica’s videos were her covering current hits by Rihanna & Beyonce. She did a great job on those covers, too. I think she will make the top 12. I think she has a fanbase & she has received more screen time than many of the girls which does help. If she makes the top 12, I can see her singing some current music. On the confirmed music list for Idol this year, there are songs by both Rihanna & Beyonce so they have been cleared by Idol. She is definitely one of the most marketable contestants this year.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

That point I agree with, along with the one about Idol missing the hopeful, joyful tone i used to have.

The casts have always had an “old fashioned” lean to then though, and there have been T24 casts that were heavy with some genre or another. It’s true here and its true on the other shows as well IMO.

But not singing current songs helps with the dated feel I think. That and the show is old and people feel they’ve seen it all before.

  • Tess

I’m knocking my socks off trying to come up with all this diversity of styles and genres that happened in the past…geesh, I can remember a time when the final 12 was pretty much ALL big booming divas, or when we had a lot of R&B light, or a year when psuedo rock was the thing, or how about the year we had a preponderance of gospel.  I am really dying to know of a season when we had these BIG, DIVERSE, seasons and who the folks were.

  • Anonymous

I totally agree. That’s what I’ve said before. He is a performer who’s talent is performing live, great vocals and a very charismatic presence. To be asked to sing live with a band you grew up listening to and love.. to be asked to sing the music of a performer who you have idolized….there just isn’t any other reason to do it than for the personal pleasure and challenge. Any money made, buzz  and personal accolades are gravy.

  • Anonymous

Read Adam’s reply differently.  He understands how they did it then, but does not know how they would do it now (if at all).

  • Anonymous

You keep saying this, but you have no examples. How is this season lacking in diversity of style? We have country in skylar, chelsea, chase, baylie, we have rock in phillip, colton, and elise, we have r&b in jessica, deandre, joshua, aaron, we have pop in hollie, shannon, eben, brielle, heejun we have soul in adam, jen, jeremy, hallie we have a singer song writer style in haley, we have jazz in reed, we have more eclectic singers like erika and creighton who can do lots of styles. I’m not really seeing how this is any less diverse style wise than other seasons? We could have a top 13 with two r&b, two country, three pop, a jazz, two rock, two soul, and a more eclectic person like Erika. That seems pretty diverse musically to me.

  • Anonymous

The show may not care but the voters do.  The author is saying that the contestants are not diverse ethnically or in any other way such as sexuality.  The Voice and X-Factor are not afraid to have non-whites and gay people on their show but idol obviously is.  So, no, it’s not just about performance style according to that article.

  • Anonymous

There are at least 4 gay men this season, and there could be more. So the argument that idol won’t cast gay males to me is not correct.

  • Anonymous

I don’t care if this season has no gay men or not. I will still watch. But has these 4 men been confirmed as gay or is this your opinion?

  • Anonymous

I’ve yet to see one person come out on Idol. They closest we came was Danny Noriega who talked about his ‘crush’, genderless.

Face it, they could air someone talking about their same-sex boyfriend or girlfriend if they wanted. They choose to gloss over it. And this is coming from someone who is gay, so I’m ultra tuned in to the issue of lack of equality.

  • Anonymous

I guess 4 is kind of cheating because I was talking about Jermaine who may not even be on, but there was stuff online about Reed, Creighton, and Joshua all being gay before they had to start wiping away their personal info.

  • Anonymous

I’m not surprised at these 4 guys. But the only one I could see during the show openly saying he’s gay is Creighton. I think the others will choose to not say anything or not confirm. There might be suspicion, but I doubt it’s going to hurt anyone’s chances since no one’s probably going to confirm their sexuality.

  • OffLeash

I read the same gay rumors about Reed, Creighton and Joshua, and even about Colton. It’ll be interesting to see if the producers will let them be who they are if that’s the case.

  • Anonymous

    Proof?  …….or speculation?

  • Anonymous

Joshua and Creighton both had mentions of boyfriends on facebook that were wiped clean when spoilers started coming out, and the spoiler source that confirmed the top 24 confirmed reed as gay as well.
Other people like Aaron and Colton have had people say they are gay, but I’ve seen 0 evidence of that online.

  • Anonymous

That was not my argument.  Maybe I’m not making myself clear, but my argument was that the show does cast gays but the voters, who are very conservative, do not want them as their idol so the show does not do as the Voice does and have openly gay contestants on the show.  Even Adam said nothing until the show was over. Also, has idol ever had a gay female like the Voice did?

  • Anonymous

Vanessa Olivarez season 2 just off the top of my head

  • Anonymous

I don’t think Idol has the legal right to keep anyone in the closet. So if any of the S11 want to state their sexuality publicly, they should go ahead and do so. It isn’t a big deal to the majority of the viewing public. Even the most conservative viewers likely have a pretty good clue that that there have been several past contestants who were gay/lesbian/bisexual. And yet the ratings have been strong for more than 10 years. So I really doubt it would impact the ratings in any significant way if one or more of this year’s contestants identified him or herself as not being straight.

  • Anonymous

I wonder if Idol’s sinking ratings lead to them FINALLY jumping of the YouTube bandwagon.

  • OffLeash

Idol producers own the contestants and their first borns with their contracts, so it’s unclear to me whether gay contestants stay in the closet because of the producers or simply because they believe they have a better chance with the voters if they pretend to be heterosexuals.

  • OffLeash

Idol should’ve used youtube years ago. I never understood why they didn’t. Even someone as greedy as Simon knew better.

  • Anonymous

I agree that it’s not a big deal to have them on the show and it doesn’t affect the ratings, but it is a big deal when it comes to winning.  We haven’t had a winner yet who is gay.

  • Anonymous

He always sounds so good to me, and this song could probably grow on me, but oh, my – last week when we got that video of him singing “Teach Me To Dance”, I couldn’t quit ‘replaying’ it, and saved it to my pc so I can listen anytime I want. (and yeah, I’ve wanted to several times!) :)

  • Anonymous

So true, Americans will not vote for a gay for the win.  Even Barney Frank was in the closet when he first ran for congress.  The gay contestants didn’t win the voice either.  It is going to be a long time before gays are playing on an even playing field IMO.

  • Anonymous

I think Idol didn’t have a YouTube channel before because they thought less people would watch the show if performance videos would be posted every week anyway. They probably thought it would help ratings if they didn’t have official videos posted.

I think they finally have a channel because ratings have been going down this season anyway. Also, they have seen that The Voice & XF have channels & it hasn’t hurt their ratings.

I think that’s a bit of an over generalization  There are plenty of fans who seem either happy, or indifferent.  I seriously doubt one can genuinely claim the majority will have a problem.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

That’s why I said “I guess”. LOL. I don’t know. I just mean a lot of the girls sound like they fit in with that bunch yet folks are calling them old fashioned, so I guess they sound old fashioned? But that’s all I hear when I listen to the girls, particularly Elise, Erika, Jen and Hollie C. and one of those other blonde H chicks whose name I can’t specifically remember. Heh.

  • Anonymous

Exactly.  I honestly don’t remember any of the seasons I have watched being all that diverse in styles. Maybe one or two who were stand outs, but overall everyone seemed pretty similar.

  • Anonymous

I thought they were just saying that and had no idea musicians were ‘bottled’ at these ‘rock’ festivals.  Some YTs are unbelievable, and the Queen forums are eye openers.

  • Nele621

I wonder if Adam will change his mind. Can you imagine all the time, money, and hassle to prepare for the festival, and he is forced off the stage. I’m even reading comments that they don’t like a gay guy to be fronting Queen. The only posters I’m suspicious about are the ones who say they are huge “Freddy” fans, and surprisingly there are many of those commenting.

  • Moria Polonius

I haven’t watched the season yet so it’s entirely possible that the girls cast sound old fashioned and/or are similar to Adele (well, DUH, lol), Grace, Jessie or Florence. I just don’t think that the latter two sound old-fashioned, especially not Florence who’s got, IMHO, very unique sound that’s not been explored before. Thanks for the Grace Potter vid, she does have the classic rock vibe.

  • Moria Polonius

I wonder if Adam will change his mind. Can you imagine all the time, money, and hassle to prepare for the festival, and he is forced off the stage.

Lol, Nele, believe it or not, but Brits do know what security is. And as astonishing as it may seem to some, they are a civilized nation, even festival goers. Adam will be fine, he went out and faced that mythical animosity at Maxidrom, he’ll go out and face the Soniphere.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

I’m with you.  I don’t think they Jessie and Florence are old fashioned, and in fact one of the blonde girls in particular reminds me of Jessie vocally, but there you go.

I think what’s really happening is that all the new girls on the scene over the last year or 2 to catch anything close to buzz have very soulful and/or bluesy voices, so Idol cast a bunch of those perhaps thinking that was where music was heading? You also have the crossover country type women fronting bands (2 of the country girls casted are country pop to me) and Miranda’s hot (the other has a Miranda/Reba feel) so I actually think Idol was trying to be current. LOL. Then you have some girls that seem like they could have been cast on Glee.

But they all sing old songs so everyone calls them old fashioned.

  • Anonymous

Oh, I have no doubt that stuff like that can happen, but let’s be honest, most people who visit forums don’t represent the majority of any fandom/activity, just the more invested members. If the internet has proven anything, it’s that the vocal minority can be very loud and obnoxious, but they are just that, the minority.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, don’t like a gay guy fronting a band that was originally fronted by a gay guy. lol

  • Anonymous

What would REALLY help to me is if they had them sing some more current songs. Someone like Jessica Sanchez absolutely has the attitude and voice to convincingly sing Beyonce & Rihanna type songs, the real question is will she get the chance?

This is one of those accepted truths about Idol — that their song list is very limited.  But earlier this year, there was a leaked list of approved songs for Idol, and it’s 128 pages long.  At a rough estimate, 5,000 songs.   It includes a half-dozen Beyonce songs, nearly a dozen Rihanna songs and a boatload of Adele songs.  There’s some Blake Shelton, some Bruno Mars, Jason Aldean, Jason Derulo. There are Katy Perry songs and Ke$ha songs, Lady Antebellum and Lady Gaga.

Now, mind you, the singers might be limited by themes, but it looks to me that there is plenty of current music available.

  • Anonymous

The fact that they don’t want a gay guy fronting Queen and are huge “Freddy” fans pretty much proves they are not Queen fans, IMO. They are just the usual vocal few that obsessively follow any Adam news in order to post negative comments. The vast majority of the audience are going to Queen fans who just want to hear these wonderful songs sung live with at least a portion of the original band. There were the same rumors about the Russian festival Adam performed at and the worst he got was paper hearts and purple balloons, lol.

  • Moria Polonius

Which half the time probably means they’re not Queen fans, but just Adam haters, hah.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

That makes me VERY hopeful, as I think there several contestants that could fit into today’s music scene and I want them to get amle chance to show that.

  • ronnie

Maybe they don’t object to him being gay but that he is so cheesy.  Did you not see that new video of his- it’s just god-awful in every aspect.  You can’t make something that embarrassing and then expect to front Queen.  People have forgotten how campy Freddie could be so it should not matter.

  • Nele621

But that’s typical of any comments about Adam, whether he has anything to do with Queen or not. He has to be the most polarizing singer from idol ever.

  • Anonymous

I’ve known Colton for several years and he is not gay. There would be nothing wrong with it, if he was, but it is wrong for you to say there are four gay men this season when you have no idea if that is true or not.

Phillip and Colton are not rock songers. Colton does Christian Contemporary music and HAC type music. Phillip is a quirky WGWG who flips songs.

  • Anonymous

Oh, and here’s Grace Potter BTW. Tell me a few of these girls don’t sound like they are supposed to be on a bill with her. LOL

There are four Grace Potter songs on the list, including “Paris (Ooh La La).”

Exactly. Typical comments about Adam, not Queen.

I think that’s a pretty big generaliztion, lol. And maybe I’m crazy, but I really don’t think he’ll be pelted with bottles.

  • Moria Polonius

??? Lol, using the word “faggot” is a code for “i hate cheesy and campy” and not “i hate gays” now? Sorry, but I’m not good at the homophobic speak, so that’s news to me.

  • Anonymous

I love Queen, but have you seen some their videos? Freddie could be PLENTY cheesy. (they are fun to watch—Killer Queen and Don’t Stop Me Now are a couple)

  • Anonymous

I would edit that to say that “some” Queen fans are not happy.  But most of these appear stuck in the past where nothing ever changes.  Apparently they’d like Brian and Roger to roll over and play dead – never play their wonderful music again.  So selfish.  Life goes on, people.

The pee bottles are a tradition – pre-date Adam, I’m afraid.

  • Anonymous

He’s polarizing  -  good  -  rather that than bland.

  • revcat

I would be very surprised if anyone would bother to buy a ticket, get ready to go, trek to the venue (whether near or far) just to protest Adam fronting for Queen. Sounds like a tremendous amount of trouble. Conversely it’s very easy to sit on one’s butt at home and post insane vitriol on the internet.

I am an Adam fan who frankly finds his music videos a little cheesy; dude has an extremely expressive face which tends to make him appear to be overacting, silent movie style. But he is a fab singer and didn’t look one bit cheesy when he recently sang with Queen in Ireland. He’ll do fine, the nobody can sing Freddy’s songs and the I hate Adam crowd won’t be there so who cares what they post on the internet.

Here are a couple of Wikipedia posts about bottling. Looks like it really happens at some festivals, but I don’t see any listed as having happened at Sonisphere. Doesn’t mean it hasn’t though, I suppose. Interestingly, several incidents are listed as having happened at the Reading Festival, which also happens to be a rock music festival in England.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottling_%28concert_abuse%29

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_bottling_incidents_by_year

I doubt that it would be perpetrated by specific “Adam haters.” If bottling happens, it is likely to be from heavy metal fans who are faithful Sonisphere festival-goers and don’t like the “intrusion” of Queen + Adam into “their” festival. Hopefully the people near the stage will be happy Queen and Adam fans, and the festival-goers who are unhappy about their appearance will be relatively far back in the crowd.

How do they know who is gay & who is not ? There may be a few who are but just because they are not obviously gay-why is that a problem? I think amongst the guys they do have a mix of cultures-its the girls where there is less diversity but that is the only area. After all this is a singing competition -not a lets be PC so that we include one of each of every race!! I read the article several times, but I keep missing the part where he talks about sexual orientation.  He mentions musical styles, including genre and style of singing, and race.

It’s a tired argument, but if someone who most people can see is openly gay makes it to the final two, it’s hard to say that the AI audience is not going to be open to gay contestants, especially when someone has to take part in a sudden death semi final round.

I thought the Adam/Queen story would be a 1 or 2 day story but it’s 5 days later and the media is still talking about it. I can’t believe how much International and US press this story has gotten. There is going to be a lot of expectations put on Adam and a lot of media scrutiny for the next few months. I wish I could be there but I’m hoping it will be televised or some amazing videos come out of it.

I also think it will be a big deal for Queen returning 26yrs later to the same place they performed with Freddie Mercury.

    WH Times:
Queen on emotional return to Knebworth for Sonisphere 2012 Festival

“And Queen will make a world exclusive headline appearance on the
Saturday night – 26 years after playing before 120,000 fans at the
    famous Hertfordshire venue.

Flamboyant, face-painted rockers Kiss and fellow Americans Faith No More will headline the other two nights of Sonisphere 2012.
    But
it is Queen’s special one-off show, with former American Idol runner-up
Adam Lambert filling the shows of the late Freddie Mercury, that will
send shockwaves through the music world.”

I’m not going to claim that Metal fans are always friendly and accepting, in
fact there is a lot of hypocrisy in Metal about that sort of thing. Bottling
does happen of course, I have seen My Chemical Romance and Aiden being bottled
but Reading festival is by far the worst for it and in three years of
Sonisphere not a single band has been bottled.
Then the writer made up some
crap about people pissing in the bottles first. I have no idea where the writer
got the idea about Metal fans chanting “You fat bastard” either,
Sonisphere is not a football match.

I’m going to have to disagree with you there. David Hernandez is gay.

in three years of Sonisphere not a single band has been bottled

That’s because there is no bottles allowed at the event. lol. I’m afraid this is all pretty much made up by certain friends or everyone is reading the same story.

This quote is taken directly from the article:

“The X Factor” and “The Voice” eagerly embrace singers of every color, style and persuasion.”
    Doesn’t persuasion mean sexuality?

That sucks.  I hope they have  a box ‘none of your business’.

  • Anonymous

Hmmm, really?  I’ve never seen anything actually corroborating that.  Interesting.

Well, hopefully, it won’t happen and Sonisphere will be a huge success for all the acts performing. I just had never heard of truck bombs before, and they had.

Hope the 2 Rock Festivals James is performing in this summer aren’t like that!

I wonder how Gene Simmons feels about not much talking about KISS in the headlines worldwide but mostly about Queen w/Adam……LOL

Adam was out on the show, he’d been out and proud since he was 19. Just because he didn’t actually say the words ‘I’m gay’ on the programme didn’t mean he was ‘in the closet’. danny Gokey and Kris Allen weren’t introduced as openly straight singers on the show, so why should Adams sexuality have been brought into the argument. Sexuality has no baring on someones singing ability, and Idol is afterall a singing show.

  • Anonymous

But why should they have to. Straight people don’t have to declare their sexuality before they sing, why do people feel that gay or bisexual people should have too???

  • Anonymous

But again, why should he have to??? its a singing show, I really don’t understand why someone needs to be declaring their sexuality. It has absolutely nothing to do with their singing ability. Why can’t they just be themselves.

it won’t be all heavy metal fans….I’m going:)

Rock festival crowds are tough. I’ve seen tomatoes thrown at 30 sec to Mars and they left the stage after one song. Lots of sun, lots of alcohol and not every band is to everyone’s liking. If you play a rock festival, gotta have some thick skin.
