Adam Lambert talks to Pressparty – I wrote ‘Outlaws’ about the many challenges the gay community faces and how hopeless it sometimes makes me feel. After I shared it with friends, it became clear that the lyrics could be interpreted in so many ways. I later visualized it underscoring scenes from ‘Bonnie and Clyde’, ‘Twilight’, ‘Milk’ or even ‘The Color Purple’. Adversity has many faces. My intention is that the tracks on ‘Trespassing’ strike a chord with all walks of life. – Read more at Press Party

Carrie Underwood Says Kids Would be a ‘Bad Idea’ Right Now – “I’m still a newlywed,” she explains to South Dakota radio station KIKN. “Next year being so busy, and I think 2013 is probably gonna end up being pretty busy as well, and my husband’s hockey schedule is absolutely insane. I really think it would be a bad idea. ‘Sorry, honey, you’re not gonna see the kids for a couple months because we’re all going on tour.’ I just don’t think that would be really fair, and we’re not ready. We’re enjoying spending time with each other and just having fun and being silly.” – Read more at The Boot

‘American Idol’ shouldn’t let Ryan Seacrest get away – Considering that Seacrest makes a reported $15 million a year, there are definitely cheaper options (for the record, I’m available and would do it for half the price). But this has the potential to become a legendary example of a business failing to recognize the value of the talent on hand and allowing its product to decay by doing things on the cheap. – Read more at MSNBC

Ricky Gervais Wants to Do Better Job Hosting This Year’s Golden Globes (Video) – “I got it a bit wrong I think the first time,” Gervais, who returns to host the Globes Jan. 15, told Matt Lauer in a Today show interview. “I tried too hard with the schtick, the comedy, and I should have just gone out there and done zingers, I think, because the attention span of someone at an award show, particularly the Golden Globe, is about a second.” – Read more at The Hollywood Reporter

Adam and Sauli won VH1′s couples hotness poll by 78% The interesting part to me was that they got votes from fans in 89 countries:

It cannot be easy, even in liberal Hollywood. to be a gay man.  I do believe that Adam has single handedly opened a main stream acceptance to male gay relationships, and he has paid a price for it.

Seriously?  LOL  But it’s easy as hell to be a gay man in West Hollywood, right next door!  Not to denigrate what Adam has done, but I would think that it is far easier to be a out of the closet gay entertainer than many fields.  And I gotta think that actually accomplished gay men, like Elton John, movies like Broke Back Mountain and shows like Glee have had a far greater impact than Adam on America’s views on gay couples.

That Chartsnow guy is a total Glambert, lol. Nice to see the support for Adam in the UK. Hope he can break there this time around, but if not, their loss.

Love the pressparty interview, Adam is just so articulate, could watch interviews of him talking all day..(actually, probably have!!!)……the choice of photos is pretty good too.

Can’t wait to see what they come up with for the music video.

and to Ringo, about your Glee comment. I remember during season 1 I was talking to my teenage son and his friend about Glee, and they weren’t impressed and said that if they were gay, watching Glee would not make them want to come out, given how Kurt especially was portrayed and treated. Adam certainly does a lot for gay rights, but is more a ‘role model’ for everyone in the way he always inspires people to be proud of themselves.

And wow to the Hottest couple poll…….I didn’t even know there was 89 countries!!!! will admit to there being at least a couple of votes from Hong Kong.

And it’s only just the beginning!!!!!    Soooooo excited!!!!!  Can you tell?  lol

Lol, well I have to admit I didn’t get around to voting on this one, but I guess it wasn’t needed. 89 countries is pretty amazing. The only thing I vote on is VH1 because that really correlates to sales but I gotta say this was pretty cool though. Tough competition with NPH and cute partner and babies too, lol.

  • TurkeyIdol

Yeah 89 is kind of crazy, but I looked it up and that isn’t even half of the 196 countries in the world. Here is a list FYI :)

If its so easy why are so few actors out and why was Adam the first OUT gay man signed to a major label?
Elton John was in the closet for decades before finally coming out….. long after he was already famous.

If you read the Pressplay interview Adam said when it comes to movies and TV, gays have a much easier time in the industry and let’s not forget those shows are all scripted not real life. In the music industry it’s still a battle. Being the first openly gay artists signed to a major label in the US says a lot. Elton John is British who came out long after he had a successful career. What’s funny is that even with liberal Hollywood being more accepting the good majority of America still hasn’t. If you read any comments under any of Adam’s articles the homophobia comes out in full force. It sad and disturbing at what people say. What exactly does accomplished gay men really mean? How can you use Broke Back Mountain as an example when the actors portrayed are straight in real life. lol. It’s fake. Adam is living a real life not a fake Hollywood scripted life.

  • Ringo

My point is not to denigrate Adam.  What he has done is beyond admirable.  My point really was triggered by the comment that “Adam has single handedly opened a main stream acceptance to male gay relationships.”  When I read over-the-top statements like this, I have to tap “bullshit.”  Saying that others have done as much or more for acceptance of gay relationshps does not knock Adam off his pedestal.  It’s just to point out that there are a lot of pedestals with people who should be admired, and putting Adam alone is unfair to them and to Adam.

In terms of gay acceptance, I recommend this top 100 50 list (Adam is # 10 which is pretty damn good) http://www.afterelton.com/people/2011/02/top-50-gay-musicians?page=0,8 .  It shows that there have been many openly gay musicians who have signed to major labels.  As for Adam, though, ” He is the first openly gay mainstream pop artist to launch his career on a major label.”

ETA Yes, Brokeback Mountain starred two straight men who lived closeted lives, but I think for many straight people, it gave an deeper insight into the horrible crap gays who are closeted had to go through. It started a national coversation and it is silly to suggest that Adam’s career or action come anywhere close to its impact. See http://www.psychologyoftheself.com/newsletter/2007/roughton.htm for an interesting discussion.

The reaction to Glee by some teenage boys is surprising because the pundits reaction is different. See http://www.popeater.com/2011/03/16/glee-gay-kiss-chris-colfer-darren-criss/ and this quote:

“‘Glee’ has raised the bar of what it means to be inclusive on TV, and viewers are tuning in by the millions, sending a clear message to networks that Americans not only accept gay and lesbian characters, but they are beginning to expect them,” GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios tells PopEater. “It’s stories like Kurt and Blaine’s that continue to remind gay youth everywhere that there’s nothing wrong with being who you are.”

  • CindyM

The AfterElton list is interesting.  Notable that the majority of that top 10 came out or confirmed their sexuality after they had already had success.  Interesting.

Broke Back Mountain hasn’t done jack for the progression of gays in America other than give some gay men out there eye candy to lust over. lol

ETA: I agree the “Adam has single handeldy” statement was a little OTT but it doesn’t change Adam’s place in pop music.

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

What’s also interesting is that a lot of them are British.

  • getgetaway

I disagree that “he has single handedly opened a main stream acceptance to male gay relationships”.  Adam’s so-called popularity is still within the AI bubble.  He is far from a mainstream household name.  He doesn’t even have a platinum album in the US and tends to live his life in the gossip rags.

And so far he and the boyfriend’s biggest claim to fame is getting drunk, getting verbally abusive with one another and then being hauled off to jail.

  • JazzRocks

Most celebrities have haters. Nothing unusual about that with Adam. It’s the extent of the ugliness that is directed at him that is unusual. I still have a hard time coping with it after 3 years & that is why I rarely read the comments sections of articles.
I totally agree with your first sentence!

  • revcat

Excellent post! Agree with everything you said!

Whether Adam is actually internationally known – is hugely debatable. Because most of the people I talk to have no clue to who Adam Lambert is. And if he expects a career in the public, he will have to take the good – and the bad that comes with it.

When it comes to Adam, it seems to be great for the press to print good stories about him – but not when it does not put him in a positive light.

  • Foursquare

I don’t think anyone is claiming that Adam has not contributed positvely to the gay community.  But in all fairness, he has done some things that are not as positive.  Like the recent inicident of him getting wasted, having a public brawl with Sauli where it escalated to the point of the cops coming to take them to a drunk tank. He also got a lot of flack from the gay community for not pubically say he was gay when he was competing on American Idol.

He also got a lot of flack from the gay community for not pubically say he was gay when he was competing on American Idol.

Which is one of the challenges he faces.  Whatever he does (or doesn’t do) is scrutinized from both sides.  He got flack from people for “pushing a gay agenda” simply by existing, while simultaneously getting called out by LGBTQ press and blogs for not being gay enough.  But if Adam has any message to give, it’s be yourself, which means you have to push against any pressure that’s on you to conform.

As for his “not as positive” contributions, why should the Finnish Incident be any reflection on the gay community?  Because it took place at a gay club?  Is this the first time any gay person ever got drunk?

And, if another celebrity gets drunk, is that a reflection on their demographic? I’m trying to think of a celebrity who gets called out like that, who isn’t a complete trainwreck — like Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears.  Can’t think of any.

But even when the trainwrecks are called out, their behavior isn’t seen as letting down a whole community.  Robert Downey, Jr. had numerous drunken/drugged encounters, finally leading to his spending months in prison.  But nobody suggested that his behavior reflected badly on the male community, the straight male community, the straight white male community, or the community of people named after their fathers.
