HDD – Album Sales Prediction : Mar 25-31

With 54.98% of reports in, we are looking to have a very nice week in sales. Easter Week traditionally does well because people are snapping up small gifts in lieu of chocolate bunnies for their older kids/significant others/whatever.

Given that Justin Timberlake sold close to a million units last week, it’s not surprising that he is tapped to lead the chart again despite an almost 70% drop in sales. Look for him to finish with 300-325K in sales. The top debut of the week right now is Voice Judge Blake Shelton’s “Based on a True Story”. Country albums typically do better on the first day of reporting and urban albums on the second, so the album currently in third, Lil Wayne “I’m Not a Human Being” is predicted to be the top debut when the dust settles. Lil is predicted to sell 200-210K while Blake moves 180-190K

Alan Jackson is currently debuting in 4th, Bruno is 5th, Luke Bryan extends his spring break in 6th, Now 45 (featuring Kelly, One Direction and Phil) is in 7th, Thompson Square feels good debuting in 8th, Rihanna is 9th and One Republic rounds out the top 10. There are currently 5 albums debuting in the top 10 and 4 country albums.

Idols/X-Factorers are doing well this week. One Direction leads the charge at 16th followed directly by Kelly Clarkson at 17th. A skip behind is Phil still flying high since his Idol performance at 19th. A little way back is Carrie Underwood at 29th and Colton Dixon sees a post-Idol performance surge re-entering the top 50 at 49th. Idols also appear on Now 44 at 32 and Grammy Nominees at 36th (both feature Kelly Clarkson and Carly Rae Jepsen).

Reporting in from Billboard Country Update and Country Aircheck:

There were no recurrents out of the t40 at Billboard but there were 3 recurrents at Mediabase (Little Big Town and Kacey Musgraves out of the t20 and Love & Theft out of the t40). This coming week at Billboard Carrie’s Two Black Cadillacs will go recurrent from the #10 spot, and there’s a chance of Jerrod Niemann going recurrent from the #35. There’s also a very small chance of Blake’s Sure Be Cool If You Did going recurrent out of the t10, but only because his new single is already t20 Billboard and radio may drop SBCIYD faster. There will be 1 MB recurrent: Carrie’s 2BC.

Kelly’s Don’t Rush had an OK week at Billboard gaining 303k while dropping a spot to #28 because Blake’s new single passed. With Kelly singing DR at the ACMs it appears the label will stick with the single for now but it’s up against a really tough chart that isn’t going to get much easier. Easton Corbin’s All Over The Road outgained DR by 677k with the help of the 1st wave of countdown spins and now trails by 344k. It’s a threat to pass with the 2nd wave of countdown spins coming this weekend but there aren’t any other threats to pass this week. Jana Kramer’s Whiskey is getting strong ad support and outgained DR by 93k this week, extending Whiskey’s lead to 434k. I expect DR to finish the week at #28 or to move up a spot to #27 depending on whether Easton passes. Two charts from now, expect Luke Bryan’s new single to debut in front of DR. Hunter Hayes will also release a new single but unless there’s a pre-arranged airplay deal I don’t expect it to debut ahead of DR.

At MB/Aircheck, DR gained 247 points and moved up a spot to #27 thanks to recurrents. DR extended its lead on Whiskey to 334 points. Easton Corbin trails by 647 points and will continue to pick up countdown spins but I don’t expect him to pass this week. With Blake already having passed, I don’t see any other threats to pass DR this week so look for DR to move up to #26 at the end of the week.

Tate Stevens’s Power Of A Love Song gained 98k and moved up 2 spots to #51. The #53 spot is separated from the #51 spot by all of 3k to give you an idea of how tight it is in that part of the chart. Tate has a solid chance of making Billboard t50 this coming week: I expect Kacey Musgraves to pass with her new single but he could pass Chris Janson and possibly the Lumineers to move up to #49. However, Jon Pardi was only 1k behind and could repass, and James Wesley is only 3k behind. Tate’s song isn’t showing up under Aircheck Activity yet.

Carrie’s See You Again debuted at #60 with 505k AIs (+474k). The song hasn’t been officially sent to all radio stations yet though I expect that to happen this week. The debut mostly happened because LA station KKGO played it hourly on Friday and I have no idea why. I’m not expecting too much from the song this week, especially with Friday’s hourly play from LA dropping off later. WMZQ Washington, DC and KXLY Spokane have also started playing the album cut of the song. SYA goes for adds 4/15.

Idol-related ads: Columbia Nashville has a full page ad for CaseyJ’s The Good Life, which picked up a respectable 20 first week MB adds. The ad has pictures of several of the PDs from the stations who added the song living “the good life.” Cute ad that doesn’t mention the little fact that CaseyJ will be performing the song on AI this Thursday. However, Billboard does note that Carrie and CaseyJ will be performing their respective new singles on AI:

Is it more difficult to sing with “A merican Idol” judge Keith Urban sitting in the front row? Or to sing in front of former judge Simon Cowell? A pair of “Idol”

graduates will be able to answer that question after they return to the show on April 4 to deliver live renditions of their new singles. Carrie Underwood will be back to deliver “See You Again,” while Casey James is scheduled to perform “The Good Life.”

World Vision also has what is now a weekly 1/3 page ad in Billboard Country Update and Country Aircheck with pictures of its affiliated acts, newly including a picture of Scotty, as well as his tourmate Sarah Darling, Wynonna Judd (now on DWTS), and Voice alum Gwen Sebastian.

Recommended reading: Both Billboard Country Update and Country Aircheck have lead features on the ACMs, which air live this Sunday. The BCU one spends a lot of time talking about the availability of alcohol on the grounds because the ACMs are such a big party. OK? Both articles talk about how the ACMs have expanded into a multi-day set of events a la CMA Fest (something I’d mentioned in my post last week about country’s mainstream TV surge), though ACM CEO Bob Romeo also says to Billboard how this isn’t about competing with the CMA or the CMA Awards but “expanding the bubble” by being different from them. The ACMs are looking to move for a year to Dallas’s Cowboys Stadium in 2015 before returning to Vegas, where they really want to expand into a week of events and showcases. There’s already the ACM Party For A Cause, one night of which is a Big Machine Label Group night in support of Outnumber Hunger and will air on AXS TV (Cassadee Pope will perform, The Band Perry will headline), the Fremont Street Experience, and the Fan Jam which will provide a supplementary broadcast point during the ACM show itself.

CaseyJ’s The Good Life, which picked up a respectable 20 first week MB adds.

Ah, good. I hadn’t seen any updates on adds from yesterday, so this is nice to hear.

Looks like Colton will get a nice bump in album sales off his Idol performance. Can’t say I’m a fan of his stuff (I’m not religious, so CCM isn’t for me, sorry), but good for him!

With Kelly singing DR at the ACMs it appears the label will stick with the single for now but it’s up against a really tough chart that isn’t going to get much easier.

They must have something telling them to stick with this. That surprises me and performing it on Sunday also somewhat surprises me. ACM producers were pretty vague in that conference call yesterday regarding this performance. It’s unclear if Vince will be there to perform it with her, but he was asked along with another unnamed individual. I’m not sure which way to read what was relayed from that call, is it Vince and secret person or is it Vince or this secret person? Surprises are fun, I guess.

The debut mostly happened because LA station KKGO played it hourly on Friday and I have no idea why.

Friday was fun on that station with this one playing every hour and Blake’s new one may have been too, if not it hourly, it was played very often. I’ve come around to enjoying one of those for the most part and the other not so much yet but that’s probably for other reasons.

  • elliegrll

I don’t think so. He’s had some great songs, Heart Skips a Beat, the original version, and Dance With Me Tonight, were good songs, but I don’t think that any of his songs have exploded enough to translate into great numbers.

Troublemaker is doing well, but I think that its popularity is going to result in people liking the song more than the like Ollie right now. He’s going to need more hits, and more exposure for people in the US to finally notice him.

  • windmills

heartly: They must have something telling them to stick with this.

Callout is definitely improving so that may be one reason. Another may be the ACM producers already have Luke Bryan and Hunter Hayes debuting new singles the audience won’t know, Blake debuting a new single (though it’s already t20 Billboard), and Brad possibly performing an album track that nobody knows with Dierks and Hunter (maybe not and they’ll just play Beat This Summer). There’s a possibility Carrie will be playing a new single too. Then you have Taylor who, unless she’s performing Begin Again or one of her CHR hits, is also performing an album track. Producers usually try to limit the number of new songs on a broadcast so they may have asked Kelly to stick with DR.

There’s also the possibility the label just wants to let DR grow as long as it’ll grow. It’s a brutal time to be launching a new single tbh: you’ve got Blake already up there, Luke about the launch, LBT & Carrie releasing singles off successful albums, and Hunter about to get going. May as well wait a few weeks for all the high profile new songs to get up the charts so they aren’t sweeping by you in a wave and screwing up your climb.

This recap almost makes it sound like Vince will slide in if the person they’re really trying to get to perform with Kelly doesn’t come through. I had this crazy thought about them drawing Barbara Mandrell out of retirement but that’s probably not it :p They should bring in Miguel ;)

heartly: Friday was fun on that station with this one playing every hour and Blake’s new one may have been too, if not it hourly, it was played very often. I’ve come around to enjoying one of those for the most part and the other not so much yet but that’s probably for other reasons.

I don’t know which is which for you but I’ve been raging about Blake’s ever since I heard a partial demo. I could take it if it were meant to be ironic but it’s not. Blake’s single got hourly spins on several (but maybe not all) Clear Channel stations last Tuesday, but KKGO isn’t Clear Channel. It does what it wants, including adding and playing Taylor’s I Knew You Were Trouble /o But I guess stations that do whatever they want are rare so I shouldn’t complain too much.

Great sales for P2. Even though he’s on my s**t list for the April’s Fool stunt he pulled yesterday. I think GGG must be doing its job of selling the album. I can’t think of any other reason why his sales are so strong.

  • jpfan2

I can see that sales this week were overall stronger due to Easter. But P2 is still maintaining the nice boost his appearance on the show got him. GGG must also be helping. Anyway my unofficial count for the album is 791K.

  • girlygirl

He also toured with One Direction…so he has had more exposure than his radio play might suggest

  • girlygirl

Wow…That’s a huge jump for Colton

  • Anny_nanny

    813k

  • elliegrll

I think that if that meant anything that Heart Skips A Beat would have done better than it did.

  • Madilo

    he’s already at 800K

  • LongKissGoodnight

As I have said some time ago in order to get to #1 GGG would, IMHO require more adds. Unfortunately it did not get any (on AAA) for the last two weeks, and that troubles me. It would probably take all stations putting GGG in heavy rotation (possible but not very likely) to challenge M&S single that is still comfortably holds top position with more than 100 spins advantage.

With AAA being a small format the loss in audience and/or bullet is not a concern per se, songs can easily go negative and rebound later like it had happened to current #2 “Hero” (seems like it made an attempt for number one, but I do not think there is enough juice in the tank to make it).

But the slow down right now is all about GGG approaching the sealing of amount of spins the stations already on board can give it. I think it should be able to if not outrun then at least outlast “Hero” for a #2 peak… And #1 can go both ways.

I am still hopeful but right now Phillip seems to be a little bit overshadowed by big names and new flashy releases. Some kind of splash to remind general population and PD’s about him and/or the song I feel would really help to sway that few more stations that he needs for a home run.

P.S. It also is good news that there early adaptors on CHR that are starting to pop up. Not an absolute rule but AAA does not like to let go if it’s crossovers so easy.
I would not be surprised to see a scenario where GGG peaks at #2, starts sliding down and then rebound dew to HAC/CHR-generated hype.

  • Anny_nanny

I think Colton in the niche that should hold a shot at a big Church holidays. And of course he did a good performance.

Thank you for the response, i hate Triple A for not giving this song its chance to reach #1 but i’m hopeful that it will one day

Hope it continues to get more adds on HAC and CHR

  • jpfan2

They really had Colton on at the best time possible. Right before a big Christian holiday. That said he seems to be enjoying some success in that genre so good luck to him. Even though I don’t like religious music I did think his song was better than both Keith Urban’s and One Republic’s!

  • jpfan2

I see one Top 40 add for Jessica’ song (San Diego) and one for Stefano.

  • jpfan2

Even better. So my unofficial and corrected count is 812K.

  • Madilo

good for her, i hope her arc on Glee helps her a little
    Stefano is climbing so slowly

Dang! I was hoping David A’s No Matter How Far would make the top 50 at least but according to the final numbers on HDD it must not have. Anyone have sales numbers for him yet?

I am glad to see GGG finally getting a notable amount of adds in Canada.

Does anyone know if it went for adds there (and if it did when)?

  • tucker davis

I hope the tour is helping with sales… a lot of these college-age kids & their friends probably didn’t watch AI or buy his album immediately, but he’s getting very good responses to his live shows & nearly all the twitter talk during the concerts is positive…good advertisement for his music. If they like his music, they spread the news incredibly fast!

  • heartly

All very good points about why DR is being performed.

This recap almost makes it sound like Vince will slide in if the person they’re really trying to get to perform with Kelly doesn’t come through. I had this crazy thought about them drawing Barbara Mandrell out of retirement but that’s probably not it :p They should bring in Miguel ;)

Hey, you joke about Miguel but funnier things have happened. haha I won’t lie, the thought of Barbara joining her had crossed my mind too. Or even Trisha.

I haven’t missed any of your gushing about Blake. ;)

  • tigervixxxen

Right, like 19 would allow him to stop tweeting anyway. LOL

  • Madilo

don’t you think that the tour he’s doing is helping too, he’s good live and with his band they do awesome jam session and people always appreciate it ?

    great update on HAC
CHR is coming on board that’s cool :)

  • windmills

Trisha would be INCREDIBLE! Garth will already be there, and we know Kelly and Trisha have a friendship and mutual fandom going. As far as Miguel, I was half serious and totally planning on taking credit for predicting it if it happened!

Hey, Boys Round Here isn’t even my least favorite song on country radio! That “honor” still goes to Dustin Lynch’s awful, offensive, and embarrassing She Cranks My Tractor. Lately it seems like country radio wants to stir a competition for the song I hate the most :

  • Anny_nanny

    A bore! )))

  • Anny_nanny

I’m not a fan of Colton, but it seems the guy knows what he is doing.

  • girlygirl

I did too! (Not that that was hard, since the other 2 songs were pretty bad). Colton has been very smart with his career — he knows what kind of artist he is (CCM) and he and his team have stuck to that path. They don’t seem to be worried about him crossing over to other genres this early in his career, rather they are just concerned about establishing him in the CCM market. It’s not my thing at all, but it’s great that he is having a fair amount of success — hopefully the S12 contestants who seem like they could/should go that route (Angie, Devin) are paying attention.

  • Caro3278sweet

    Sorry. I missed that.
