Haley Reinhart & Casey Abrams Perform Her New Song “My Cake” (VIDEO)

American Idol season 10 alums, Haley Reinhart and Casey Abrams performed separate sets last night (Aug 11) at the Universal City Walk in Los Angeles, but they joined forces to perform a new song written by Haley titled “My Cake.”

Casey sings back up and plays guitar as Haley takes lead vocals on the jazzy, sultry tune. She breaks out in a little scat to finish the song. Very nice.

Haley continues to write songs. One of her unreleased tunes, “Get Yourself Together” was re-recorded by Christina Grimmie for her album, With Love released on August 6.

Check out last night’s performance, below.

Love the song, and love Haley. A little growling, and a little scat to finish the song. She reminds me of the flower children in California in the 60s.

  • voco_qara

I love it especially the scatting. It feels a lot more grown up than some of the songs on Listen Up. It kinda reminds me of an Aloe Black or Jamie Lidell type of song. Its a good direction for her.

  • girlygirl

Another very bluesy/jazzy song from Haley. I wonder if she is going to just put out a jazz album, rather than worrying about trying to do the pop thing.

  • Ryan.PBE

Listen to get yourself together on youtube! its really good

  • voco_qara

She said that her new music is gonna be a lot bluesier and edgier than Listen up. So I’m guessing her new music wont be as “pop”

  • RockiDreams

    You can say that again.

  • CanadianLady

    Love Haley and Casey together.

  • pj

Seeing them together always makes me smile. They have great musical chemistry and, from what I can tell, similar senses of humor. I would love for them to do a variety special with music, skits and special guests. Networks, listen to me. ;-)

ETA: You know, kinda dorky skits like Sonny and Cher.

  • pj

Also, her publishing company seems to have a lot of faith in her. I think that bodes well for her music future, even if she isn’t a pop star. :-)

  • LA944

I love Haley & Casey! All time faves off the show. They are true talents. I really like this song. She can sing anything. Her voice is phenomenal. And it’s so distinctive. But, the jazzy/bluesier-rock side seems to fit her vibe best. And all those genres are intertwined anyway.

Lots of cool vids popping up from the show. All the tweets saying it was a great time. Here’s a couple more of them performing together

They are both so enjoyable and talented. Haley is really reminding me of Maria Muldaur (I think I am dating myself with that one.) Does she play piano at all? She also reminds me of Diana Krall in a way. But more so Maria Muldaur. So much talent – both of them.

  • Lynn Di Resto

Casey please cut your hair and shave.

  • seldomused

I think this song is pretty great and quite enjoy the way they sing it.

  • seldomused

I think this song is pretty great and quite enjoy the way they sing it.

I don’t think she plays. But she tweeted this in February right before she left on her trip to Asia:

    “Haley Reinhart ?@HaleyReinhart

    Just got a b 12 shot and a new keyboard. I’m a whole new woman #whorunthismotha #girls”

Her keyboardist tweeted that he was “curious to see what kind she bought.”

I think Haley wanted the keyboard to use in songwriting. She’s become good friends with a girl from Chicago who plays the keyboard, so she might help Haley become proficient at it.

  • Bugme Nomor

This is an original song by Haley’s talented friend:

I really like this song (there are elements in this song that actually remind me of Traffic) and am so glad to see/hear Haley doing what she does best. I hope we continue to hear more from her.

Though I have never been a proponent of a permanent Haley/Casey musical partnership I do have to admit that when they perform together they have great chemistry and create some good musical moments.

  • LA944

This is so much fun and some real jazzy goodness-The Flintstones theme. The sax and keyboard players also terrific! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBeNTk6bRTM&feature=player_embedded

  • CanadianLady

Not sure how that would affect his singing or playing instruments.

  • thedeviledadvocate

Loved it at the end Casey says, You should drop by my set, and Haley replies “I might be busy” (she says just kidding right after, but the I might be busy made me laugh.)

  • Lollygaggin

I love it ! At the beginning of another video of the same song she says its the song she wrote most recently. I was surprised by this because her team announced 2 months ago she would sharing new material at this concert so figured they had a song or songs in mind already. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DW9AUJycoH0&feature=youtu.be

  • Incipit

That was crazy, off the wall, and a whole lotta fun!

Jamming and scatting to “The Flintstones”, for mercy’s sake? I loved it!

  • WestiesRule

I like her and Casey a lot but not sure about the words in this song…. odd comes to mind…

  • Incipit

Oh, I want the words, WestiesRule – odd is OK with me – I just want to know what they are. Actually, the Chorus is so strong, the verses have my permission (*snerk*) to be odd. Talk about a hook!

    IMO. Of Course.

  • pj

Loved it too. I think she was taken by surprise. They are fun to watch.

  • pj

He looks fine to me. He’s just being himself. He doesn’t have to go work at an ad agency.

  • LA944

I think she was too. I’ve seen a vid of Casey and the sax player doing it awhile back–Casey played it on the stand up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBeNTk6bRTM Brilliant

Anyway, they are so spontaneous when they sing together–and I think they like to surprise each other while performing. Just like when they did Moanin on tour–changed it up some every nite. Casey probably said come out and lets do the Flintstones and Haley was game. I love them watching each other to see what they are gonna do.

They have a real appreciation for each others talent and I’m so glad they met. I think they may have been hanging out together in some past musical lifetimes.

If talent meant more in the music business they would be on top. But, unfortunately it doesn’t work that way

  • KelseyW

I remember hearing about Casey saying something months ago(Apparently in a Skype chat with fans.)that he was teaching Haley how to play piano/keyboard…

Like you said. I think it’s to help with the countless songwriting she’s been doing since last year. However…Part of me hopes that she will start playing piano at future gigs. If there’s one instrument that suits her most it’s the piano. IMO

  • Bugme Nomor

You must be thinking of Mad Men. The advertising industry underwent a creative revolution in the 1960s.

“Los Angeles Times – May 6, 1968: Goat or Plato, more and more beards are sprouting in lush profusion in the creative departments of Los Angeles advertising agencies.”

“Chicago Tribune – Nov 27, 1971:… walk into any advertising agency and look at the long hair, frye boots, bell- bottoms … “

  • EB

Cool song! Haley’s scatting at the end is awesome… and they do always have great chemistry together.

  • txhalien

I think these are most of the lyrics but I could be off:
You may think things are sweet
But I’m here to tell you something
    Not everything is peachy keen

Baby your lucky your lovin is somethin to keep you around
But don’t get excited cause your on my mind in the now
I’ll have my cake and eat it to (x2)
Long as you keep the lovin good don’t worry bout me leavin you

Some ?? And others judge and say what they shouldn’t
I ain’t no angel but i speak the truth
What would it mean if I couldn’t

  • voco_qara

I like the lyrics. The song is playful and fun so the odd lyrics actually fit the whole vibe of the song. I don’t think it was meant to have genius Bob Dylan type lyrics.

  • pj

Okay. I change it to bank. :-)

  • justmefornow

I think he’s going for the “Jesus” look ;)

Excuse me? Just how is this song “terrible”?

  • Tom22

I got a different kind of 70’s groove.. more SF style R&B/Rock Jam Band. Watch this through(meshes better as it goes) Heres what I’m getting at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNnZ0KuK0sE

  • thedeviledadvocate

Cool meshup. I was actually talking about Haleys personality and clothing preferences with the flower child comment. Musically, I think Haley is one of a kind. She mixes genres like bartenders mix alcohol, you never know what she is going to do next. You are right though, that does sound 70’s.

  • iani

Casey, Haley as separate-artists means fine/good for me, Casey and Haley together different vibe: fun, great, nice combo of entertainment and talent…I will show to my DH, he’s crazy about them. Only I told him Haley has a new album and he ordered it without telling me, lol.
