The Glee kids sang the National Anthem tonight, @Philadelphia, before Game 3 of the World Series between the Yankees and the Phillies.

Amber Riley (Mercedes) belted out a soulful lead, while the rest of the kids sang background harmonies.

Very nice.

Baseball has pre-empted Glee this week and next, but we’ll finally get our fix when the show returns on Wednesday, November 11.

Geez, she can really sing. (She was already my favorite on the show, but wow.)

  • jack5791

Nice Job! I’m sure her and the rest of the Glee kids were nervous as hell.

  • carmine2008

OMG. I seriously got chills listening to that… and I’m not even American.

    Amber Riley can really sing!!!

  • CindyM

    Wow…That girl can saaaaaaaaaang!!

    Wonderful!!

  • newswoman

They sounded wonderful, and Amber was amazing. Great rendition of our national anthem.

  • carolinacharms

I saw it live in HD. Amazing. That girl can blow.

  • keithp

Amber Riley is ridiculous talented! It’s great to hear them sing live and have it sound just as good as they do on the show. Fox did an amazing job selecting the cast!

  • http://www.fatladysings.us TFLS

Very good job. And to think American Idol turned her down (idiots!). Still, the very best rendition of our national anthem I can ever remember – was Whitney Houston at the Superbowl in 1991. She was top of her game that night ‘“ magical; so effortless and free. Makes what has happened to her since almost a sin.

  • terps

And she was turned aways by the Idol people

  • alwaysintrouble

funny that in the beginning they were booing but by the end they were cheering!

good rendition for sure! I loved the harmonies and yes Riley can flat out blow!

She lip-synched that to a track she had previously recorded.

But, yes, that was still an amazing vocal and it’s terrible what became of her.

Amber Riley was turned down by the Idol people because she didn’t fit what they were casting for that year. She’ll probably get a much better career from Glee than she would have from AI.

  • Little Boy Blue

RE: Amber Riley was turned down by the Idol people because she didn’t fit what they were casting for that year.

Some people can be morons, even from FOX. There are MANY who made the top 24 or even the top 12 who do not deserve to be there, and there are also many who didn’t make the top 12 who SHOULD have been there ( the latest one I can think of was Felicia Barton last season ).

Anyway, what season did Amber audition for ? Anyone knows ?

  • gulfluv

    That was fantastic!

  • CathyMK

Amber and the rest did a great job!

I don’t know if I can stand waiting so long for another episode.

  • erinnthered

Awww. I’m so happy for the big reception they got. Great job!

  • SharB

Amber certainly did blow. I’m glad and so happy for the whole cast. Yeah Little Boy Blew, AI really screwed up last year omitting Felicia Barton and Ricky Braddy. I would have easily substituted Felicia for Megan Joy and Ricky for Scott or Jorge. Oh well. But Amber’s career will take off much more with Glee than AI, for sure.

Not bad, bringing in the others as backup came at an odd moment for me, but for the love of God it’s not “ROCK-ITS.” I don’t know how many times I hear that when the anthem is sung but it makes me nutty. Her attempt at a run didn’t go so well but I didn’t hate it over all.

As far as Idol goes, just because you can sing doesn’t mean you’ve got what’s needed to make a hit recording artist or entertaining TV. She’s doing just fine in Glee.

  • TwigLA

I didn’t hear any booing – maybe ‘whooing’?

It was good but her voice dropped to a whisper on a few lines. I liked when the full cast came in.

Boo that the Phillies lost. I was rooting for them.

  • Duke

Mercedes killed it! And she got rejected by Idol?!?!?!?!?!?!?! i mean, im not surprised but at the same time, wtf!

  • Tess

The Anthem was good not great…and all of these singers are good not great. Their individual careers are getting a significant boost with being on Glee but, IMHO, none of them are the stuff a BIG recording star is made of…and now let me be fooled.

Besides, on the show, none of them have sung anything but kareoke. So this whole show is a fictitious American Idol….often makes me wonder what the downloads for AI songs were before the show ended. I bet some season 7 and season 8 contestants made a bit of cash off of their songs (at 7 cents a piece).

But, all of this says alot about the music interests of the “general” American public when songs from a TV show or kareoke songs from AI often outsell a “real” singer. A bit sad, that.

  • maturin

D’awww, that was sweet! Sing it kids! Sing it Amber!

  • tierbee

Aw, that was great! Good job Glee kids :) .

  • maturin

But, all of this says alot about the music interests of the ‘general’ American public

That they like fun shows with cute young people singing popular songs?

Things have sure gone downhill from the days when my parents liked the Donny and Marie show! Or my grandparents listened to Your Hit Parade on the radio! Well, maybe those aren’t the best examples.

I’m sure in my great grandparents’ day, the American public did not like shallow variety shows and ONLY listened to authentic, original music of worth as they cranked the Victrola by gaslight. Those were the days! Except if there was a 1905 Idols with ankle showing and piano covers of popular sheet music, they were probably there.

  • fearbear

Amber Riley is great. I wish they would give her more solos on Glee. She killed Bust Ur Windows.

I think you misunderstood my post. Glee is a show about kids singing other people’s music. Right? It isn’t a variety show. All I am saying is that, based on I-tunes sales, it amazes me that kareoke singers (in some cases) are outselling the originals…not making a judgment call just stating a point. And this says a whole bunch about the power of television in our daily lives.

And, IMHO these kids are not the best singers in the world. And yes, If I wanted a good song to put on my Ipod I would “buy” the original.

  • http://crushingkrisis.com krisis

They were awesome! It is not easy to sing in that park (or any park, really), and they were all controlled and in-tune. It’s a shame they couldn’t get a little more gain on her mic for the lower parts, but it was still a beautiful performance – and fun to hear the kids without auto-tune!

The original artists of these tunes aren’t crying, as many of the peeps who download the Glee tunes ALSO go back to investigate the original. It’s a win-win situation all around. I don’t find it particularly sad.

  • useless

One of the hardest songs to sing and she blew it out of the park! The harmony sounded really good, too. I loooooove Glee and I was really disappointed when it wasn’t on last week.

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

Never was a baseball fan, but bumping Glee, Fringe and Bones for weeks has truly made me hate it.

  • suebrody

Love Amber. She, Will, and Sue are my favorites for sure. I think she has the best voice. WHEN DID IDOL TURN HER DOWN? I don’t remember this…where was I?!

Sadly, this didn’t help the Phillies defeat the Yankees. :(

Yep. For instance, the original Journey version of Don’t Stop Believing has been in the iTunes top 100 since the pilot. They are crying all the way to the bank.

I love anyone who can take something that iconic and put a new spin on it. That really is a rare talent.

Also, Marvin Gaye ’83 NBA All Star Game is still the best, IMHO.

  • Reflections On Life

    I flove Amber!

NFL prerecords the national anthem for all the superbowls nowadays. Looks like baseball keeps it live for the world series. Prefer the live versions – more at stake, and the imperfections keep it real & soulful.

That was very sweet and we will have two episodes of Glee this week if the Yankees win again tonight MJ!!!!! Go Yankees – two reasons for you to win tonight
