The CMA Music Festival is a huge event that takes place in Nashville every June. There are performances, events, autograph signings and more–all geared to please country music fans who come from everywhere to attend.

American Idol 10 winner and runner-up, and teen country singers,  Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina are set to make their Nashville debuts at CMA Fest this week. The duo will present at the CMT awards on Wednesday, perform at the Opry on Friday and play the annual City of Hope Softball challenge on Saturday.

On support from radio stations, Scotty McCreery tells country aircheck, ““From what I’m hearing, I’ve gotten a lot of support thus far,” says Scotty, ” I know there are a couple who aren’t on the bandwagon, but it’s my job to get out there, put out good music and win them over.”  It’s Scotty’s first trip to Music Fest, ““I was trying to go last year,” he says. “A friend of
mine from middle school was going, and I watched it all on TV. It’s going to be an amazing experience. When I think that I was bagging groceries three months ago, it’s pretty humbling to get this chance.”

Lauren Alaina tells Country Aircheck she’s too busy to look ahead, ““I don’t really know much about what we’ll be doing with radio,” she admits. “We’ve been so busy finishing up with the show and doing press. I’m told I’m No. 40 on the charts, which is cool. Some people work their whole lives and don’t get that opportunity.”

Carrie Underwood’s week at CMA Fest will be cut short. She appeared at the Billboard country music summit on Monday and is set to sing at the Opry on Tuesday. But then that’s it for Carrie–she leaves for a promotional tour of Australia on Friday.

At the Billboard Summit on Monday, Carrie told the attendees that her relationship with hockey player Mike Fisher opened her to write more revealing material, including her recent hit “Mama’s Song.” “I don’t do moosh,” she said.   She is more open, she conceded, and perhaps on the way to “becoming a sentimental weenie.”  Her impact on husband Mike?  “I haven’t improved his hockey game one iota.”

Carrie told the crowd she’s begun writing her new album, and that she’s definitely gained confidence as a songwriter, but always listens to outside material. “The best song wins-end of story,” she says, but “I want to give my fans the best album possible.”

She says her new album is a work in progress. “It’s shaping up, at its earliest form, to be very eclectic,” she says. “I always look for vocally challenging songs. It’ll be me, but hopefully more progressive.”

Carrie had some advice for Idol winner, Scotty McCreery–don’t listen to criticism that he was too country. “I really don’t understand that terminology at all-’too country,’ what is that?” she says. “I’ve been criticized for being ‘too pop.’ Everybody is too something it seems like, but the format is doing pretty good so obviously nobody is too anything. It’s exciting to turn on the radio and hear traditional country and then hear Rascal Flatts and Keith Urban, which are a completely different sound. I personally don’t want to hear the same song over and over again.”

A couple of other little tidbits from the summit via twitter: “Carrie Underwood talks Brad Paisley duet and said Sheryl Crow was the voice of the demo when she first heard the song.” “”Carrie Underwood is really loving Adele right now!” “Carrie Underwood just told us she wants to do a traditional gospel album in the future!!”

Although there will be no Carrie performances beyond her Tuesday Opry appearance, there will be plenty of Idols representing on the CMA stages throughout the weekend. Scotty and Lauren, Bo Bice, Kellie Pickler, Casey James, Bucky Covington, Crystal Bowersox, Danny Gokey all have appearances.  Aaron Kelly will be on hand.  Idol original flavah, Kelly Clarkson will sing “Don’t You Wanna Stay” with Jason Aldean at LP Field on Thursday night.  Idols Idols everywhere!

Freaking amazing of you to do a megapost like this MJ. Awesome job.

SO excited about the folky, stripped down songs Carrie’s talked about. I hope they make her next album.

    LOL what?

  • meme4cj_

Thank you MJ for the MEGAPOST :D Casey going to ROCK that Acoustic set at the LP Field :D . Don’t know where to post this :

@AimeeMayo : just finished a song w/ Casey James & @silvertire that makes me feel supercrazyextradeliriousalidocious…we R freaky frazzled goofy tired.

Wondering if she meant writing or recording ?
However , I hope he’ll continue to write & record new songs even if he finished his first one , & make some connections :)
The more , the better ;)

  • Indigobunting

Danny Gokey will also be a part of the Country Weekly magazine fashion show tonight strutting his stuff.

Danny Gokey helps unveil the world’s largest t-shirt at Centennial Park in Nashville. More information HERE.

    LOL what?

It is through Gildan company-who among other things makes T-shirt merchandise for touring artists so that is one tie in. They could be making the shirts your fave is hawking on tour ;)

Besides breaking the Guinness world record for largest T shirt, it involves a charitable donatin tie in for the program Keep the Music Playing-program to help music education in schools.

Sounds silly, but they are making a big deal out of it; they are actually presenting the certificate for the world record (Danny will be there for that too) at LP field during the CMA nightly concert that evening.

Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina make their Grand Ole Opry debuts @ 7 pm.

Both at 7 pm?………Surely Scotty and Lauren won’t debut with a duet will they? Or be announced on the stage at the same time.

  • windmills

JudyOhio: Both at 7 pm?………Surely Scotty and Lauren won’t debut with a duet will they? Or be announced on the stage at the same time.

According to the Opry’s schedule they’ll both debut between 7:30-8 PM Central time. I wouldn’t be surprised if they sang their singles and then did a duet but I’m just guessing.

Ha, OK, thanks. That sounds less bizarre/random & like a worthy cause.

I hope we get some good videos from this week! I’m really anxious for the Scotty/Lauren videos & agree they’ll undoubtedly sing their singles at the very least but am hoping for a duet, too.

That’s some good advice that Carrie gave to Scotty. She’s right, when you have a dozen artists that have styles that are so similar then after a while, everything does tend to sound the same so variety isn’t a bad thing. :)

Great interview with Carrie…love her! Lauren A. reminds me of a young Carrie at times, both seem to have such a sweet nature about them and an easiness when talking to people.

Besides breaking the Guinness world record for largest T shirt, it involves a charitable donatin tie in for the program Keep the Music Playing-program to help music education in schools.

Not surprised that Danny was tapped for this honor since it involves a charitable donation supporting music education. He is becoming well-known in Music City as someone who is passionate about combining music and charity thanks to his willingness to get involved whenever there is an opportunity to help, as well as his own nonprofit Sophia’s Heart Compassion Nashville which includes music education programs.

Well, well, Kelly Clarkson going country…
Not a bad idea, selling matters…

  • BootStar

Carrie’s a class act all the way. Very gracious of her to stick up for Scotty and Lauren.

I hope you’ll be posting performance videos from this, MJ. This isn’t just “any old” venue.

    Thanks for the thread!

  • Pam

That goes for me too. I would love to see them. Thanks mj for all of your hard work getting all of these deets together for this thread! :)

Isn’t Danny signing for fans and I know he is involved in the fashion show. I’m not surprised he was left off that – seems Danny fans always have to correct the record here.

Anyway, looking forward to Scotty and Lauren at the Opry and I hope they do a duet.

Lol Lucy1234….yes, hopefully there will be pictures from both of those events!
No worries, we always have Danny’s back ;)

Well, well, Kelly Clarkson going country…

Where did you hear that? I think she is just going to sing her #1 hit (on country and now climbing HAC) with Jason Aldean. It isn’t the first time she has dueted with a country singer. It is not unusual. Jennifer Nettles did a duet with Bon Jovi (although they did put out a country album, lol).

  • Lucy1234

Article mentioning Danny and Bucky in Fashion Show tonight.

Can’t wait for pics from the show – should be good.

If I never that song or the one by Lady Antebelum (sp) again it will be too soon!

  • steph6449

Danny, Casey J, Kellie and Bo are all signing during the day on Thursday. I think all are at the GAC booth, or at least Danny and Casey are, around 11-12 I think. Kellie and Bo have slots later in the afternoon.

Everybody is too something it seems like, but the format is doing pretty good so obviously nobody is too anything. It’s exciting to turn on the radio and hear traditional country and then hear Rascal Flatts and Keith Urban, which are a completely different sound. Nice that Carrie has such an open viewpoint :)

  • Indigobunting

If I never that song or the one by Lady Antebelum (sp) again it will be too soon!

I agree. Although I still like Lady A’s song, much as I like Kelly, I am not very fond of DYWTS, kinda generic ballad anthemy, IMO. I know I am mostly in the minority about that.

Nice that Carrie has such an open viewpoint

Also interesting she wants to do a Gospel album. But Gospel and Country have solid roots together, especially Southern Gospel so that isn’t too surprising.

Maybe that is why Mandisa stated she most wanted to collaborate with Carrie and Danny in her CMT interview (although she also stated Kellie P. and Sugarland, so she is eclectic, lol, just like a lot of Idol singers).

  • macy

If I never that song or the one by Lady Antebelum (sp) again it will be too soon!

I liked both of these songs in the beginning, but they have been played so many times on my Country radio station that now I feel about them like you do!
I agree with what Carrie said in the interview about it being exciting to hear the different sounds in Country music on the radio and not the same songs over and over.

  • Ratna12

    I just got home.
A friend of mine said that Carrie just sang and she introduced both Lauren and Scotty. I hope there is a video somewhere.

I’m glad Carrie is sticking up for Scotty a little. And I’m glad in a way that Scotty knows those criticisms of the country radio and wants to prove them wrong. Way to be a fighter against those haters Scotty!

  • mandabutter

Great post MJ, awesome of you to include all the deets in one mega-post.
Good luck to all the Idols participating in CMA Fest week. So jealous of the fans attending, I went in 2008 & it was a motha effing blast!!! :) Nashvegas is awesome.
