Today’s Idol Appearances:

  • David Archuleta will be honored as part of the Mass General Hospital Cancer Center 100. Westin Boston Waterfront, Westin, MA. More info HERE
  • Lauren Alaina will appear on Live with Regis and Kelly
  • Taylor Hicks performs at the Dirty Martini, Palm Beach Gardens, FL

The Carrie Underwood/Tony Bennett duet recorded for the legendary crooner’s  new Duets II album has been revealed. The duo recorded “It Had To Be You” for the disc, set to be released on September 20.  Oh. One of my favorite standards! Should be good.

David Archuleta tweeted last night, “Went to the Grand Ole Opry again tonight. Little Jimmy Dickens was performing on that stage and he just turned 90.”

Whatever Pia Toscano was doing in Arkansas, she seems to be finished, She tweets, “Had a blast at the Walmart Shareholder Conference!!!!” The big meeting is Friday. I would be really surprised if Scotty McCreery isn’t scheduled to perform. Plus, on August 22, Pia will be honored by the Brooklyn Cyclones at MCU park before the 7:30 baseball game. She first sang the anthem there in 2003 when she was only 15. More information about “Pia Toscano Appreciation Night” can be found HERE.

‘American Idol’ Scotty McCreery Weighs In On ‘Country Bieber’ Moniker

“Country Bieber … I mean, Justin Bieber is the epitome of [a] big star, so it was cool for me,” McCreery smiled. “I mean, Justin’s a whole lot further ahead than I am … so, I guess it’s mainly because of our age. …”

“Girls love Scotty McCreery like they love Justin Bieber,” Alaina interjected. “It’s true.”

“Thank you, Lauren,” McCreery laughed. “I just figure it’s because of our age. Me and Justin are pretty much two young guns.”

And despite all the stars she has met and the instant fame and fashion and fans, her absolute favorite moment on Idol was going home for the homecoming show. She said, “We had been gone for so long. It was just like we got back to see our friends and family and tell them we loved them and spend a little bit of time with them.”

American Idol’s Haley Reinhart: “I Was at Peace” with Elimination

American Idol’s Haley Reinhart may have looked upset about her third-place finish, but the 20-year-old singer says she was OK with her dismissal.

“I’ve never really been upset,” she tells TVGuide.com. “There’s always going to be a state of shock when you get to that point [but] all in all, I was at peace with it.”

‘Idol’ Season 9: Where are they now?

Season 10 of American Idol is history, which makes this an appropriate time to check back in with the Idol finalists of Season 9. What have they been doing, where are they headed, what kind of music are they making — and are they selling any of it?

USA TODAY tracked down final 12 of the Class of 2010, from winner Lee DeWyze and runnerup Crystal Bowersox, to last year’s first-eliminated, Lacey Brown. What she found:

GM Signs on to Sponsor ‘X Factor’ on Fox

General Motors has signed on as a larger sponsor Fox’s “X Factor,” becoming the second major advertiser to pledge support for the much-anticipated musical-contest program, according to people familiar with the situation.

Spokespeople for Fox and General Motors declined to comment.

The sponsorship will likely weave a GM vehicle into epsiodes of “X Factor,” but will not last the entire season, like the deals that Coca-Cola, Ford Motor and AT&T have with Fox’s other big program, “American Idol.” Last January, Pepsi said it would be exclusive season-long sponsor of the program, which Fox executives are hoping will match ratings juggernaut “Idol” in terms of viewer interest.

Cute that Carrie and David got to hang out, love them. I wonder what Carrie’s still doing in LA. It’s been a week since the finale.

It’s a sighting from last week. Carrie’s been back in Nashville since last Thursday and she’s been spotted out and about there almost every day since then, including yesterday when she and Mike were spotted at the Apple store in a local mall.

This is one of those things where the PR for the restaurant probably planted the item in People to get the restaurant’s name out there.

Lauren just finished her performance on R&K. Very nice and she was cute in her interview. Still not fond of her wardrobe choices though.

For those who are familiar with country music, is there one of these awards that is regarded as the most “prestigious” within the genre?

  • desiree_chick

They are moving fast but it’s the real deal.

The real deal!? Are you kidding me? I like Paul and all, but really, give that relationship a few months and it will be OVER. This Nikki and Paul thing is just some quick fling he’s enjoying, and soon both will move on, regretting matching tattoos, getting a place together, etc. But anything to keep your name in papers….

  • windmills

fuzzywuzzy: For those who are familiar with country music, is there one of these awards that is regarded as the most “prestigious” within the genre?

The CMA Awards in November (hosted by Brad Paisley and Carrie the last 3 years) are considered the “Oscars” of country music but the ACM Awards in April are also industry voted. The ACM Awards now include a fan voted component for several awards including Entertainer Of The Year. The CMAs are the older organization and probably more prestigious but they’re also considered the more uptight organization. Lots of complaints about the politics in both of them and in fact the ACM Awards started in the 1st place because the CMAs were considered too insidery and political. At the end of the day they’re both promo platforms and the CMAs have gotten some stuff right and the ACMs have gotten other stuff right.

The CMT Awards are basically country’s version of the VMAs – ridiculous show, fan voted, sometimes fun, sometimes stupid.

America’s Got Talent was up from last year’s ratings:

    The two-hour season-premiere of America’s Got Talent opened with a dominant 9.2 rating/15 share in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, that outdelivered its year-ago season-premiere (8.0/13 on June 1, 2010) by 15 percent.

With this lead in, the Voice should see a big improvement of its ratings compared to last week:

With stronger lead-in support, The Voice perked up to a solid 8.8/14 at 10 p.m

    Last week:

    The Voice dipped to last-in the overnights at 10 p.m., with a 5.6/ 9.

It will be interesting to see the demo numbers. If The Voice numbers are inflated by AGT, then it shouldn’t help their demo numbers that much.

The AGT audience skews older than what The Voice was averaging.

Well, he is still signed, unlike Joe McElderry. I think Simon figured out that a few months on The Xtra Factor would give Olly some much needed facetime on TV. I think Jedward are still the most successful act of X Factor UK season 6.

I’ve read that many Russian writers/djs said much nicer things about Adam after his performance. I think most of them were surprised that Adam was actually such a great singer and performer. I’ve also read that Adam doesn’t have many male fans in Russia, or they won’t admit they like a gay artist. I’m surprised Adam was actually invited to do a concert there, but I guess he had enough female fans.

It was reported that not as many people were watching Korn and Prodigy as Adam. I think most of the girls went to where Adam was signing. He signed for a very long time.

Not sure if he can participate in the Mass General Hospital Cancer Honoree program in Boston tonight. Well deserved honor, Mr. Archuleta! They are giving Haley a decent amount of media exposure this week considering that it is Scotty’s and Lauren’s “now.” Her interview personality is really quite winning–the 18-minute OK interview seemed to breeze by.

I really think the stars are aligning for our girl–I just hope we don’t have to wait too long.

  • songsungblue

I do not buy the Paul and Nikki tattoo fingers story! How would you even do that? Would it be like a fighter tattooing Love and Hate on his fists? LOL. I’d have to see a picture. Although I do believe they’re serious. In one of his tweets, he took her home to Alabama to a wedding and to meet his family. *shrugs* Who knows? Stranger things have happened.

Big Mike Lynche selling a reality show is not surprising. He pretty much sold the birth of his daughter on his season. But for reals, a ‘classy’ reality show is not going to be super-interesting. I have lots of friends who would like to show how you raise a kid and go to work and not go insane! And they even sing better than Big Mike ;) Seriously, that Where Are They Now? list is somewhat depressing. It must have been hard for Aaron to see Scotty’s success [although cudos for not being a Danny-sized douche about it] knowing that it will probably affect his own standing. Still have hopes that Crystal will put out a stronger album that will catch on more, but I don’t see any of them as ‘breakout’ stars – even Casey James seems iffy to me. He’s not the most charismatic guy in the world, although he appears to be very nice and grounded.

I’m feeling very frustrated that they can get a single out and on the radio for these country kids in a couple of weeks and they can’t get even a single out for Casey J. in over a year. Ring tattoos I’ve seen, but spelling out the beloved’s name? I guess he’s lucky she’s not Natasha Reed! I’ve been with the wonderful Mr. Songsungblue longer than I’d care to admit, but I think if I suggested name tats, he’d fall over laughing. What are they, L-O-V-E on the left hand, and H-A-T-E on the right? Heh. The jokes just write themselves…anyway, I kind of doubt this is true. Feels like a tabloid myth somehow.

Good on Haley to get her media in! I think the same thing was done for Casey J. last year, right? He managed to get on the shows after Lee and Crystal did the circuit. It’s a myth that it doesn’t happen, it’s just a delay. I’m really encouraged by how bright and interesting Haley seems when she interviews.

but I don’t see any of them as ‘breakout’ stars – even Casey James seems iffy to me. He’s not the most charismatic guy in the world, although he appears to be very nice and grounded.

I do think CaseyJ is a mellow low-key kinda guy in interviews with radio, etc. From the ones I’ve seen, though, he’s got a sly wit and is very personable. He looks right at the interviewer, smiles a lot, laughs. Is he lighting his hair on fire and jumping up and down? Ah, no. LOL. So if that’s not charismatic, okay. ;-)

But when he starts playing that guitar of his and starts singing, he lights up. So into the music, so enthralled. And I also see the difference in him from the AI show. Now that he’s allowed to play his guitar the way he wants to…it’s as if his guitar and his voice are the same instrument. The guitar sings, then Casey’s voice sings. I, personally, become enthralled with his music. I don’t care if his hair is on fire or he’s jumping up and down. His music speaks to me. Might not be everybody’s cuppa but he’s got me. That’s for sure.

I’m feeling very frustrated that they can get a single out and on the radio for these country kids in a couple of weeks and they can’t get even a single out for Casey J. in over a year.

Well, I would rather CaseyJ introduce himself with solid material. I know it’s hard to wait, but man, if I were a Scotty fan… that first single is pretty iffy for me as far as introducing him to the country music world. It’s just not a really good song. I think Scotty is riding on the AI wave and I’m happy for him. I hope he gets a better single next time out, because IMHO he’s going to need better material if he wants to stick around.

It’s clear CaseyJ’s label and mgmt are not rolling him out like a typical AI peep. They are rolling him out like a typical new country artist peep. The music will make him or break him. And I think that’s what CaseyJ wants.

It will be really, really interesting to see where Scotty, Danny, Lauren, Aaron and CaseyJ are five years from now. I wish them all success.

  • windmills

I wonder if Big Mike could tie in the Late Night Sandwich concept into his reality show. That was actually QUITE entertaining last year.

I’m excited to hear Carrie singing It Had To Be You with Tony Bennett. Carrie’s also got some events planned next week for CMA Fest: Billboard Country Summit keynote Q&A is next Monday, Fan Club Party and Opry performance next Tuesday. She may be skipping the bigger events this year because she’s headed to Australia for her very 1st promo tour.

I’m glad BNA’s getting Kellie out there at the Billboard Country Summit, they’ve hit the ground running with her single.

moadms: I’m feeling very frustrated that they can get a single out and on the radio for these country kids in a couple of weeks and they can’t get even a single out for Casey J. in over a year. I’m a marketing person and I just don’t understand their strategy or lack of one.

Scotty and Lauren have big enough fanbases and good enough buzz coming off their AI seasons to be able to survive less than ideal coronation singles and even benefit from the exposure they’re getting through the early sales and adds. But they’ll be expected to come back with much better albums and deliver sales with those. Their early sales and airplay give them a better shot at getting stronger hit material from publishing companies.

CaseyJ was coming off an AI season with bad buzz and didn’t have a big AI fanbase. His only shot at a country career was to make a really good album that he mostly or completely wrote/cowrote that he both sang and played on. That’s taking a while and though it’s not ideal for his AI fans I don’t think there’s a big loss right now as he slowly gets exposure to country fans through his live performances. If he released product right now it probably wouldn’t sell all that much so he may as well keep building his exposure and then hope to top that off with a single that makes some headway at radio.

Two completely different situations with two completely different artist profiles so it makes sense they’d be on two completely different tracks. I’m hoping for successes all around because I think they all add something to country music.

I love Casey’s personality and that he is so real. He’s got a quiet charm and he can be very witty. Love his great big laugh! :)

But when he starts playing that guitar of his and starts singing, he lights up. So into the music, so enthralled. And I also see the difference in him from the AI show. Same here! He looks so joyful when he is performing (also serious when the song calls for it) and the emotion in his voice mixed with his guitar playing really draws me in. I loved him on the show, but I think his performances (and voice) are so much better now.

Well, I would rather CaseyJ introduce himself with solid material. Scotty is fresh off the idol show plus he won first place. He is riding with the wave (which he should be) and it does not take too much to be popular now. Casey wants (and needs) to take this opportunity and make the most of it by producing the best material that he can, something he really believes in. Can’t blame him for that.

It will be really, really interesting to see where Scotty, Danny, Lauren, Aaron and CaseyJ are five years from now. I wish them all success.

It definitely will be! I think that they all have something to add to the music scene and they all can be successful in their own right.

RE: Season 9…I think Siobhan Magnus has the potential to be one of the most successful Idol contestants. She just needs to get rid of the yes men and the talentless leeches who have been taking advantage of her.

I wonder if Big Mike could tie in the Late Night Sandwich concept into his reality show. That was actually QUITE entertaining last year.

Oh, yeah. Geez. Kinda forgot about those. They were hilarious. Anyone who claims that all the S9 folks were boring as hell and had no personality… well, they just need to look at some of these vids.

I think Siobhan’s moment has passed. The minute she decided to go back to Massachusetts, instead of staying in LA or going to NYC, her chances of succeeding faded.

I would probably check out a Mike Lynch reality show just for the novelty factor of seeing an AI contestant in that setting. However, Fantasia’s reality show certainly did nothing to enhance her image, and if anything made her look more ridiculous, so I think Mike is being naive if he thinks a network wouldn’t want to pump up the sensationalism or “scripted” funny stuff. Maybe if he got his show on something like ABC Family or one of the religious channels. Who knows…

Season 9 was snakebitten by many things but at the end of the day the biggest problem is their figurehead is shlubby Lee DeWyze, aka Simon’s “parting gift” to the franchise. Casey and Crystal are crazy talented but the image of the season is set based on DeWyze.

    Fenway,

I also would like to know what he is working on in Nashville.

I’d also like to know what David A. is working on. In his last interview in Myrtle Beach he mentioned writing, working on a project, and meetings. David A. is very good friends with Joy Williams from The Civil Wars and husband Nate who live in Nashville.

He sure is popular in the Philippines. He has had 3 songs on the RT 30 chart for months now. Falling Stars is #1. I think he is the only Idol on the chart right now.

Not only in the Philippines, also in several Asian countries. David A. is the only one I see charting right now. Good Place is in the Hot Bubbling, hope it makes it. I’m still blown away by his Myrtle Beach concert.

It’s great that he’s being recognized for his philanthropy.

Anyone know how long Archie is going to be in Nashville?

Long enough to take the town by storm. lol.

No, just kidding. He hasn’t given fans a clue, actually. All we know is that he’s there to write some music, and he met for some reason with Victoria Shaw.

Anyone else wonder what Haley would do with At Last? Kill it? Destroy it? Well let’s see:

Okay. Does any contestant have more numerous or more fascinating pre-Idol clips out there than does Haley? The girl is clearly a star, and it’s obvious to everyone. Come on, Jimmy I., let’s GET THE JOB DONE ALREADY!!
