I don’t know anything about Clay but this is one of my favorite songs too, so I watched.

All I have to say is Oy! Is he always like that? It doesn’t get much cheesier than that.

Wow, I had forgotten how much I liked Clay Aiken – that was very good and thanks for bringing back some old memories!

  • kuanna23

Wow! Clay did knock that out of the park, a very difficult song to sing. It was perfect.

  • phdrmom

Thanks for getting the video up so quick. I’m on the West Coast so it hasn’t shown yet.

Clay looked great & sounded even better.

I love Unchained Melody & I really love the version on Clay’s new album. I have to admit I was a bit worried when I saw that he sang it live. They did a great job shortening it for the show & Clay hit it out of the park!

My favorite song by my favorite singer. Perfect.

This just proves to me once again that all the talk about somebody having “killer vocals” and an “incredible range” means nothing if it’s just not your cuppa. And this so isn’t my cuppa . . . I think I gained five pounds listening to that, between the sugar and the cheese. He’s very talented, though, and I wish him all the best.

  • Miss Chaos

How did he manage to ruin one of my favorite songs, and to think I used to like him and his singing. I really couldnt wait for it to be over, even turned the sound down. And all the ladies and guy all talking over each other was sooooo annoying.

May not be someones cup of tea but this is the kind of Idol we used to have, one that could at least sing in tune, hit the right notes, I am not a claymate either, heh – just found out what that was in 2007 when I first found Mj’s

  • sonyab

Clay was fantastic! :) He was very mellow tho. I wonder why.. But then BOOM! He exploded! :) He should have won American Idol. :)

  • JB1

Clay is the perfect example of the times the judges say “I don’t know what kind of artist you are”. Clay has a sensational voice, still one of the best in Idol history. Bridge over Troubled Waters in the finale I think is the best vocal in Idol history. Youtube it if you don’t believe me, its incredible. Unfortunately, he has no niche. He’s not pop, he’s not jazz, he’s not blues, he’s not country. He’s really nothing… so he gets stuck as this kind of modern day Barry Manilow. I wish it would work out for him, and I hope this album does well, but I doubt it will.

  • justminx

No one will ever sing this song better than Bobby and Bill. Not my fav RBros song, but still a beautiful melody. FYI Bill is hitting some clubs in SoCal (singing with his daughter), promoting his new album.

Decca American Idol alum Clay Aiken’s new album, Tried and True, looks on target for 17-20k in first-week sales.

  • n3mover

Love this new version of Unchained Melody! I’ve heard them all and this is a good one.

  • Allison

I think that is the best Clay has sounded and the best he has looked on a TV appearance in one shot. What a beautiful rendition of UM. His vocal ability puts this season’s Idol contestants to shame.

  • dena

After today and with this new album, Unchained Melody will forever be a Clay Aiken song. Perfection.

  • psf

Holy mother of all that is holy!!!! That should have been on the Idol finale to show those little whippersnappers how it’s done!! Don’t get me wrong, I love Crystal, but whoa nelly! No one can deny that is one of the most unique, pure & powerful voices anywhere ever…….. anyone got a fan???

  • sallysimmons

May not be someones cup of tea but this is the kind of Idol we used to have, one that could at least sing in tune, hit the right notes

I think that sums up how Idol has changed and how it has affected people who liked it the way it used to be. None of my non-Idol favorites are pitch perfect or even worry about that. I don’t go to gigs are buy record because of sublime vocals. I do it because of the artist’s music, or their tone or their style.

For the people who really value singing like Clay’s, I can see how Lee must seem like a disappointment. But for people like me, Lee is much better and more interesting. It’s all just personal taste, but I hope Idol keeps moving in the Cookie/Kris/Lee direction and never goes back to divas and Clay Aiken.

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

I sure hope it continues in a Cook,Kris,Clay,Adam kind of way too but not a Lee way – please and thank you!! oh and Kelly, Carrie, Daughtry – they might not always hit the right notes either but they don’t almost always NOT hit the right notes and they are all very interesting and have major personality to boot

Tried and true — means “covers”, means he doesn’t have to pay new writers to write new music (like Tedders or Claud Kelly), means the music is safe.
    Boring….

  • springboard

He has a good voice but this performance was so cheesy.

  • shenandoah2

This was, by far, one of the best performances by Clay ever!! I’ve been a fan since Day One and this was amazing! I’m a huge music fan and there are very few people who can give me chills….this performance did just that!!!

  • TopCatDC

Unfortunately, he has no niche. He’s not pop, he’s not jazz, he’s not blues, he’s not country. He’s really nothing…

Clay does have a genre, it’s just probably not the aisle in which you usually shop – it’s traditional vocal pop. So he’s right there with Josh Grobin, Frank Sinatra, Michale Bublé, and Harry Connick Jr. – all of whom still have respectable sales.

  • druzilla

When he was on Idol the song was sped up a crazy amount. This was ok but it lost something from the original. The marching band drum was just ridiculous.

  • yksask

Clay blew the roof off ABC this morning. Love that voice so clear and true.

So tired of people who come too post who pretend they do not know Clay. No one knew which song he was going to sing until he started so not sure why anyone would watch just to hear this song?

  • outback

Perfection Clay. Great, great performance. Keep it up man!

  • JOJOSIE

Clay is still Clay. The voice is still there. I guess I like the big voices as my favorites have been Clay, Taylor, Cook and Adam. I have found the last two winners, nice but boring. I seem to prefer those that leave it all on the stage. I won’t buy this album for me but I know my sister will love it for her birthday as she likes the oldies that she can sing along with.

  • cookcricket

yksask: I pressed play to hear Unchained Melody because that’s what mj has posted at the top. Love the song and agree w/ the poster that said noone can beat the Rightous Brothers on this. However, Clay sounded pretty amazing and he looks great!

  • Asmcqu01

Clay sounded fantastic as usual! I’ve been a huge fan of his since the wildcard show season 2. Kinda funny how much Idol has changed since then. I’ve only watched seasons 2, 7, 8, and 9 all the way through and I’ve like all kinds of contestants. Clay season 2, Jason was my favorite season 7 but I also loved Brooke, Cook and Archie, Season 8 Matt was my favorite but I also loved Allison, Adam, and Kris, and Season 9 my favorites were Andrew (albeit mostly non-idol stuff), Crystal and Lee my ultimate favorite.

I don’t find Lee disappointing at all as a winner because I just really connected to him and love his voice. Maybe I’m just all over the map music wise but I guess that’s what I love about Idol in general. It’s amazing how much music Idol has put out there and I’m glad I have the opportunity to listen to all of these great artists.

Looks like I need to head over to itunes and purchase Clay’s new album. Love him but I would also love to hear some original stuff like his first album. I love that album!

  • annag

Wow he makes it look so easy. It’s unbelievable.

  • BlankSlate

I’ve long loved Clay. I was part of the madness when it all began back in January 2003. Those were good times and lots of great music, great fun. I am thrilled Clay has found a happy place in his life and his music. Great to hear his voice live again, although this was not my favorite arrangement ever of UNCHAINED MELODY. I wondered if he was going to be able to hit the very high note (like the old days); it was a little awkward when he changed octaves and built up to the note in that crescendo. It’s a major accomplishmemt to go for it and hold it but something about it made the song less romantic for me….

    Still. Welcome back, Clay!

  • Caden

The arrangement of Unchained Melody is something Clay was thrilled about because it is his very own version. He can hit that high note in his sleep but I think the glissando leading to the power ending is amazing and very difficult to do, much harder than just the high “need” in the original.

  • Allison

Looks like I need to head over to itunes and purchase Clay’s new album. Love him but I would also love to hear some original stuff like his first album. I love that album!

Hope you enjoy “Trued and True”,Asmcqu01. And you may like Clay’s last album for RCA -”On My Way Here”. It has all originals, and he varies up his styles vocally. The quality of production is much better than “Measure of a Man”.

Caden – I really like Clay’s version of UM, but the original,IMO is unsurpassable. I saw the Righteous Brothers in concert a couple of years before his untimely death and Bobby Hatfield just kills on the high part of UM. Similarly, “Mack the Knife” belongs to Bobby Darin. I find that on “It’s Impossible”, Clay outdoes Como. And some of the other songs on the new album, where he’s changed an original work very well.
