American Idol alum, Chris Richardson, who was a finalist on Season 6 has been signed to Young Money/Cash Money records.

Chris recently appeared on Tyga’s “Far Away”, singing the hook.

In a video announcement, Cash Money co-founder, Birdman, talks about how he discovered Chris, “You might have saw him, he started off the way we recognized his talent, on American Idol. Somebody who knew him, knew us and Josh connected us,” he said.

“Being part of this team, I’m really family-oriented so just having the camaraderie of everyone in this label is just something so special, says Chris, “I can’t even explain it. But it definitely is inspiring. Every day I come into the studio and I go until I stop, really. I’m so inspired to all my label mates.”

Cash Money is home to rappers Lil Wayne, Drake, Jay Sean, T Pain, Nicki Minaj and more. It operates as a subsidiary of Universal Music Group.

Watch the announcement below. For some Idol graduates, it takes a few years to catch that big break. Congratulations Chris!

I thought Chris had the best voice of the men his season.

That’s the great thing about Idol.  You don’t have to a Carrie Underwood, a Kelly Clarkson or Chris Daughtry to have a career.

All Alone is one of my most played songs. Congratulations to Chirs!

I’ll have to say for me this is very unexpected.  Never felt we’d hear much from Chris but must admit that I like the song.  The videos shows that you don’t need too much production money to do a nice video.  Wish the sound were better quality, cinematography isn’t as good as Chris Isaak – Wicked Game of course and seems odd to see him unnecessarily lipsync both the lead and “tomorrow” background vocals.  Still, definitely a fine job.  Best of all, he no longer seems like a poor man’s Justin Timberlake.  His vibe, smile and falsetto is different.

Not ready to buy but I’m intrigued to hear more.

This is great news! Cash Money is an awesome label. I think he can be really successful doing featured spots on songs, but here’s hoping he can be someone like Robin Thicke and lure audiences in with a smooth and sexy R&B sound.

Good for Chris! I loved him on the Tyga single (which should have been a bigger hit, never got why it wasn’t) and he was my S6 favorite. He works really hard and deserves this.

I have no idea why Far Away didn’t hit on Pop, I thought it was a great Pop song.  Such a shame.
