HDD Top Five Labels: I.B. BAD REVEALS THE TOP FIVE FINALISTS OF THE 2013 SEASON

“The only remaining 2013 release with the potential to move the needle in a disappointingly light late-2013 releases schedule are the third album from Columbia’s One Direction, hitting on Monday of Thanksgiving week (11/25), with estimates currently in the 500k range, and RCA’s Britney Spears, though her very light promo schedule, with little or no TV around the release, could put the album on the low end of the 150-200k forecast.”

    HDD Rumor Mill:

ARTISANAL A&R: Several majors have quietly imposed a moratorium on artist signings as they reevaluate the traditional A&R formula of drilling 20 oil wells in hopes of getting one gusher, when so many of today’s hits are coming from niche companies like Glassnote, Cash Money, Lava,Macklemore, Nettwerk, Merge and SYCO. The preceding insight, brought to us by HITS’ undercover agent I.B. Bad, is just one gem from a treasure trove of useful scuttlebutt in his latest, freshly posted dispatch. 30 to 24 Absolutely love this. Keep on going little song.

Scotty’s single is gaining a lot of momentum. It barely made the top 30 last week and now top 20 is within reach in the next few weeks. I think it will end up being his most successful single so far and he can defeat the sophomore slump that has happened with many other idols.

I wish Kellie’s single was doing better and hopefully radio gives her another chance with another single.

Hopefully Candice shows up on the UAC chart soon.

  • Lexie O’Neill

Those spin increases for SYT have me thinking I’m seeing things every morning. Hope my hallucinations continue.:))))

    Cheering!

  • Beck1982

I’m hearing there’s a very real chance of hitting #20 by December 1st. Many I’ve seen think he can pass Danielle possibly by Sunday, if not by sometime next week. If he passes Danielle by Sunday, forestalls a jump by Aldean and uses his one recurrency left (the other two have dropped below) he could start next week at #22. If that happens there are 3 recurrences slated for December 1st. If Aldean doesn’t jump by this Sunday he will most definitely jump next week. That jump will drop Scotty back to #23 then with the 3 recurrences he could see #20 that Sunday. Obviously this is best case scenario. Hoping we’ll see Top 20 by next Sunday but hey I’ll take #21. I’m just so happy for Scotty!! He so deserves this!! And I love that radio is finally jumping on board!!

One Direction are about to hijack the iTunes charts worldwide with new album track “Strong”.

  • Mateja Praznik

Yep, they dethroned themselves from #1 again. In minutes.

  • Happyhexer

I have never understood the “throw spaghetti on the wall and see what sticks” mentality. If you look at older established artists, not many of them were instant successes with their first albums. The majors need to revisit how to “develop” an artist. I get that times are tougher in the music biz, with less people buying/downloading music. But it still costs money to put music into the marketplace, whether that it done for an existing signed artist or a new artist. It makes no sense to automatically throw out the old and on with the new.

If the signed artist has not performed in the marketplace as expected, they need to ask WHY, and make decisions based on those answers. Is it poor song choice, lack of charisma, poor stage/concert presence/performances, lack of creativity, radio resistance, poor marketing, what? Is the artist realistic, does the artist have an artistic vision, is the artist hardworking and take initiative? The answers to some of those questions may indicate whether the artist is worth investing in further, or whether they should cut their losses instead. I recognize there are no easy answers and it is not easy to anticipate who will resonate with the music-buying public (just like it’s not easy to pick stocks), but still . . .

  • Happyhexer

Kellie is already on her second single. So far, neither has cracked the top 40. I am worried.

And I gotta say I loved her first single but it was going to be hard to crack radio with it given current country radio trends. I am not as fond of the current single. Yep, I’m worried. :-(

  • Happyhexer

Should be seeing Scotty in concert tomorrow at Chinook Winds. The weather forecast seems to be promising. (If there was snow, ice, or freezing rain along the mountain pass, I would just ditch my ticket.) I waited until pretty much the last minute to purchase a ticket (wanted to make sure I liked CD #2), so my seat is in the back. I doubt I will get photos or video. (They had a front row seat for tonight’s performance, but I’ve been to the venue before when Danny Gokey performed there. It is so far off to the side that you really can’t see anything, AND you are right by the speakers, so the sound gets distorted.)

  • Madilo

Their pre-orders are insane, i’m really happy at how well they’re doing, i really hate when people predicts that they won’t have longevity and that they’ll seperate within years ugh.

  • Madilo

Her being on DWTS did nothing for her, i thought it would give her at least a little boost.

  • Happyhexer

Country singer Chuck Wicks also was on DWTS. He is currently without a label after the first two singles from what was supposed to be his second CD went nowhere.

  • Mateja Praznik

Longevity is a relative thing. I personally think it’s great if an act has several successful eras or stays around for a decade or more. I don’t expect from anyone to still be around actively in the biz at the age of 60 tho.

One Direction have 2 or 3 albums and a Greatest Hits release on their current contract with Syco. Even if they decide to retire after that and live quiet lives, I will be happy for them.

  • ptebwwong

Unfortunately, getting a boost from being a contestant doesn’t happen as often anymore. Trace Adkins didn’t get a boost from winning the All Star Celebrity Apprentice. He had a big boost from the show the 1st time he was on. I don’t think Clay had a boost either & he was a runner-up. I’m not surprised Kellie hasn’t gotten a boost. There’s been a contestant that’s a singer almost every season of DWTS now. The majority of them did well on the show, but never got boosts and some of them even released a single/album while they were still competing.

I think there are a couple of reasons for this. IMO there are so many artists now who have done these shows that many of them don’t get boosts anymore. Also, many of these artists have singles/albums that don’t fit with their current genre & music industry.

  • Miz

I thought she wouldn’t be singing on DWTS until next week. Did I miss a show?

  • Craigin

I totally agree. Peruse on wikipedia through many of the old classic artists’ discographies and you’ll see a slew of failed or mediocre singles (and sometimes failed albums) before they hit it big. The idea used to be throw a bunch of singles at radio and see what fits… now new artists get one over-calculated hit or miss “one shot” single. Its killing the industry if you ask me- way too much turnover.

  • Lexie O’Neill

Hope you have a great time and safe travels. I know I love Scotty in concert, that voice live. Understand if you don’t get photos or video, we usually find some on twitter who do, just enjoy.:))

  • Madilo

I was talking about Kellie being a contestant on the show and she even won it, so that should give her a little media attention and boost at least, that’s what i was expecting.

If these predictions come true, it’ll be the first week out of the top 10 for Lorde’s album, she’s holding up really well.

  • elliegrll

That’s an eye opening number for Gaga. I wonder if she will get a clue and realize that she needs to pay more attention to her music, and less to sculpting a particular image.

  • SaSa8

Really excited to see Scotty’s SYT move up the chart this week. It is gaining traction and I believe it’s ranking moved up from #4 to #2 on one of the radio surveys. Hope it keeps going strong.

I really like Kellie’s song Little Bit of Gypsy. I really want radio to give it a chance. I have heard it on my local station several times.

  • ptebwwong

I wonder if she would care. IMO she “marches to the beat of her own drum.” I wouldn’t be shocked if she likes the new direction she’s going & doesn’t care about the numbers. Now Interscope has to be disappointed.

  • windmills

Kellie’s a weird case of somebody whom most people in the industry seem to agree has star power to spare, who’s making music that gets good to great reviews, who’s making the right kind of music for the artist she is, who’s super likable and yet…that isn’t translating to music sales.

A lot of that’s on country radio and how difficult it makes things for women who aren’t already superstars. But for whatever reason, and I HATE to admit this, it doesn’t seem like traditional country fans have really gotten behind her music by buying it. I don’t know why not – she’s one of the biggest ambassadors for traditional country right now. It’s not like trad country fans aren’t buying music: George Strait’s music is doing fine. Then again, he had a hit single this year, and then a 2nd single that barely cracked t50. Maybe it just goes to show how you really need sustained mass exposure to get a rebranding into people’s heads.

Now, Kellie’s on a small indie label, so the best she can hope for is a long, tough battle for a t30 radio peak. The difference between her situation now with Black River Entertainment and her situation when she was with Sony Nashville is at least Black River is willing to fight to try to get that t30 peak if a single can gain a foothold in the 1st place.

But Kellie’s going to continue having no problem getting TV gigs and her management is active enough that visibility is not going to be an issue. She has a great relationship with the USO, and she’s a highly recognizable name. She’s actively in the live scene performing concerts to good-sized festival/fair crowds so she’s not hurting for money either. I just wish her studio music were making more of an impact.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I’m not a fan, but I have to say that these guys can sing pretty well (some better than others, saw them on the X-Factor, where it appeared that they were all singing live). I respect that.

  • jpfan2

I have to assume that C. Pope’s single has gone gold If not, it is very close. Anyone know for sure?

~80% of the fall for Gaga? Great!

  • ptebwwong
  • Beck1982

You are correct he moved from #4 to #2 on the Callout America chart. I’m not sure if Windmills posted it on one of the threads or not. I saw it on IDF.

  • Anny_nanny

I do not believe that she doesn’t worry. But she always can pretend.

  • ptebwwong

That’s true that she could pretend. GaGa is polarizing as a celebrity. But she’s also willing to “experiment & take risks with her music.” IMO that means there’s a likelihood at some point you’ll gain some fans, but there’s a bigger chance of losing more.

  • Anny_nanny

For persons, who are not interested in anything she spends too much effort to shock public. I would prefer that she experimented more in music (because she is very talented performer and has a gorgeous voice), than in behavior and dress. I love cocktail cherry, but I prefer full menu, not the jar of canned cherries.

  • elliegrll

Kellie is the most established idol alum to lose his or her first contract. She is known by both industry insiders, and consumers, but I think that she’s mostly known for her personality, and not her music. Either that, or while consumers seem to like her, they aren’t to crazy about the songs that she’s released.

  • Jason Gorny

Duck Dynasty must be selling a lot more physical copies thank Kelly because on iTunes, Kelly is charting higher than DD.

  • windmills

I haven’t posted it this week and actually stopped doing the regular updates because of time but also because the callout picture hasn’t really changed in a significant way. In SYT’s case it does continue to trend up (next week’ll be a little down, but still very strong) and that growth is driven by an improvement in how SYT has tested in the M 18-34 demo, which has been the lagging demo on the song.

  • Mateja Praznik

I wish Kellie went back to country pop, traditional country isn’t doing anything for me. She had some good songs on her first two albums.

  • FinalFantasy13

omg mandisa’s overcomer.. My family plays some christain station all the time in the car and that song is ALWAYS ON…

I honestly didn’t even know that was her lol..

  • tripp_ncwy

She won’t care since she did manage to get her #1 album this week. It’s all about marketing & branding.

  • ptebwwong

I agree I think her personality is more known than her music. Also, I think her personality/image makes people think she is a country pop artist. So the difference from her personality/image & the music she’s making could also be an issue.

I’m not saying she should go back to country pop. Clearly, she loves traditional country. I’m just saying there could be a disconnect due to her music & personality not meshing.

  • windmills

elliegrll: Kellie is the most established idol alum to lose his or her first contract. She is known by both industry insiders, and consumers, but I think that she’s mostly known for her personality, and not her music. Either that, or while consumers seem to like her, they aren’t to crazy about the songs that she’s released.

I do think her personality has maybe overshadowed her music some but I still have a hard time understanding it because a lot of her personality and her real story is reflected in her music.

Kellie’s been rebranding herself the last couple of years. The mainstream media’s bought in: she’s got the likes of Jody Rosen (formerly Rolling Stone, now NY Mag/Culture Vulture) and Grady Smith (Entertainment Weekly) among others on her side. The country media’s bought in too. The reviews of Kellie’s music reflect an unequivocal endorsement of her musical direction and she’s gotten plenty of critical and media love for fighting to do the kind of music she wants to do, the kind of music she’s meant to sing. She’s had the chance to perform her music on shows like AI (last year, when she performed a non-single), Ellen (multiple times), Good Morning America (including an incredibly emotional, lovely performance tied to her best friend’s battle with cancer), Craig Ferguson, The View, and so on.

I keep coming back to radio because it’s the engine for sustained mass exposure of the music. It’s been the missing piece in Kellie’s rebrand and maybe why the masses haven’t really come around to seeing Kellie as waving the flag for traditional country. Someone Somewhere Tonight tested very well with what little airplay it got which IMO is evidence of people liking her songs just fine. But it barely cracked t50 because it was a slow, thoughtful ballad in a bro country summer. I had a DJ friend (whose station played the song) tell me they would’ve added it if it hadn’t been summer.

I mean, even I knew SST had no chance in hell of becoming a hit on current “country” radio, so let’s chalk that up to a bad strategic decision by Black River and a missed opportunity to leverage Kellie’s DWTS win into airplay. But I still think anything Kellie would be willing to record now faces a long, tough climb to t30 thanks to the influx of pop programmers and the overemphasis on the M18-34 demo. I don’t think country radio cares about DWTS because its ratings in the demo are pretty low.

Sorry I’m rambling. But this disconnect between Kellie’s music sales and her critical reviews/the media love for her and her music/her star power is a major puzzle for me. I keep thinking there’s going to be a time when it all comes together for Kellie and the good news is that because of her visibility, she’s got a few more chances coming.

  • Beck1982

Ok I thought I had remembered you saying you we weren’t really gonna be doing it but I couldn’t remember lol. Will it be down enough to drop to #3 or will it still be able to hold the #2 spot?

  • L. R. M. L.

Enjoy Scotty. Even if you’re in the back, this voice of his should still reach you. Sold Out tonight..

  • L. R. M. L.

I have an idea. Maybe Kellie can replace Blake on The Voice for a while, it seemed to have done wonders for him. And she would be so good there.

  • elliegrll

Just speaking for myself, after the first album, and based on her time during AI, I saw Kellie as an entertainer, someone in the line of Kathie Lee Gifford. Someone who may release music from time to time, but that music wouldn’t be her main focus.

While a lot of the songs that came after the first album have more weight, it’s hard to shake that initial impression.

  • windmills

If Tim McGraw’s Southern Girl doesn’t get yanked, SYT will drop to #5. But I expect Southern Girl to get yanked so SYT should be #4 behind FGL, Parmalee, and Joe Nichols.

I don’t read too much into week to week ranking movement because so many times, moving up is based on songs that are testing better getting yanked or not being included on the chart. Too, these charts as presented by Billboard are ranked by total positive but radio often is more interested in rankings by “passion” – the percentage of people who love a song. By that metric SYT is #10 this week which is still very strong.

The main point is that on 1 national survey (which may or may not match what’s going on on other surveys), SYT’s settled in as one of the top testers for weeks and now it has some radio momentum to back that up to the point that it’s looking like smooth sailing to the t20. SYT’s weekly sales could be better but they’re fine. No need to worry for now, and we’ll see what happens with SYT after it makes t20.

  • standtotheright

I put on the Spotify top 100 playlist the other day, and it was easily 1/3 Drake and Lorde songs. (Including non-single album *deep cuts.*) They are, at least for the steaming-album demo, THE album artists of the fall. It would make sense that they’d have sustained sales.

  • Mateja Praznik

Dream on. The bastard isn’t going to give up his place on your TV as long as The Voice is on.

Oh and if he really had to skip a season, he would surely recommend his wife as a replacement.

Still no album to pre-order on Itunes. I guess just the single is available and you have to pre-order CELEBRATE through James’ website.

I did notice Parachute is #39 in Rock now which I found interesting. When Stand-up was released, I don’t remember it charting at all. I’m not positive though.

Also, James is doing a tweet to reveal the album cover now as well:

Yay Beatles! Still kickin’ ass and takin’ names 50 years into the music game. I downloaded Vol.2 and hope there are many more treasures from the archives to come. Collectively and individually there will never be another more “perfect” group of artists in popular music. SO GLAD I’ve been around in real time to experience them. Looking forward to all the landmark celebrations in 2014 to mark their arrival in America… I get goosies (tm JLo) watching this Kennedy Center honors ceremony for Paul in 2010…

Yes and today on Good Morning America they had a whole feature about Overcomers with 3 real people with touching stories on how they overcame hardships. It was very sweet and they featured Mandisas song and mentioned her. Robin Roberts is a big fan of Mandisa.

  • Disraeli99

yeah… Nothing about Beatles music for me will ever feel ‘nostalgic’… those tunes are STILL relevant and sound as fresh and vital today as they did all those years ago. IMO Anyone who proclaims to be a lover of music must acknowledge love and reverence for the Beatles. In the sea of mediocre talent and style over substance that marks current day popular music they still stand head and shoulders above many imitators and pretenders. We are fast losing the legends and greats that have shaped our music culture. Watching the Woodstock movie on VH1 and the Eric Clapton Crossroads music festival (Jeff Beck! Clapton! Robert Cray!) tonight has given me hope that true artists and artistry is still among us. Save for the occasional Nirvana et al in the past 20 years, we have to raise our standards, and quit accepting the dreck the record companies, entities like even American Idol and TPTB in the media have been foisting upon us as ‘talent’. Let’s Get Back to where we once belonged, back to the Garden of real, genuine, true MUSIC.

Did you guys know that Daughtry’s metacritic score is 53 based on 5 reviews ? Why ? Is the album that bad or it’s due to the change of sound ?

  • Madilo

Looks like Daughtry has peaked on HAC, what do you guys think ?

  • elliegrll

The only critics who matter are the ones who or who may potentially buy the album. I doubt that anyone is going to come to a decision on an album based on the opinion of five people.

  • elliegrll

Waiting for Superman has a positive bullet that is over 100, which is pretty good on Hot AC. That does not indicate that the song has peaked. I assume that you are basing this on the one day totals, which is never a good idea. A trend lasts for more than just a day, if the bullet for the week was negative then that would be a problem.

  • Madilo

Oh good for him, i did not pay attention to the past updates which i should. Hope he goes top 10 at least before peaking then. Will they release it to Pop ?

  • bscfan

I read one review that probably counts for metacritic: the New York Times. The reviewer likes Daughtry’s voice and singing, but did not like that Daughtry had gone “soft.” I don’t think the NYTimes reviews are that influential as far as people actually purchasing albums.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Having read the reviews helpfully linked from Metacritic’s site…

It looks like the reviewers felt they had to simultaneously slam Daughtry’s old sound as out-of-date and turgid, then also slam his efforts to update as slick, inauthentic, and too much like whatever commercially successful band they don’t like.

While I rarely have much sympathy for Daughtry on any level, that strikes me as a no-win situation. Apparently he was supposed to update his sound (which they claim not to have liked), but only in a way that was totally original and authentic (yet somehow likable to the critics), and that way was also supposed to get radio play in the current market? And critics would recognize that totally authentic way with their critic-fu?

It may also be a mediocre album, but the reviewers aren’t devoting enough words to quality that a person could tell. They’re too busy wringing their hands that Daughtry dared change a sound they didn’t like to something else, in pursuit of commercial success.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

If you can remember the release date for Stand-up, there is a site called Music Chart Info that archives the iTunes charts and lets you search by genre chart. The page I linked shows some rock peaks for non-single tracks off LMB, but I think Stand-up came out earlier?

Searching shows Stand-up charting only on the iTunes Canada Rock chart, but I don’t trust search on a new-to-me site until I’ve tested it a few times, as Billboard’s search function frequently borks.

  • Happyhexer

I agree. I think Lady Gaga has a lovely voice and (much to my surprise) actually can sing. But the packaging is distracting to me. I guess it’s okay if it works, but even Lady Gaga needs to pay attention to the music.

  • justmefornow

Thank You for the link. Stand-up did come out earlier, in Sept. 2011 sometime at the start of that NFL season, I think, because it was a track on that NFL album.

Very interesting that May, the most HAC song on the album charted the highest. Hmmm….

  • Happyhexer

I think it’s killing the industry in more ways that one. It is creating expectation on the part of the music-buying public for the newest flavor of the month. That discourages artist loyalty, which is very short-sighted on the music industry’s part. Yes, there will always be exceptions, but I think they are far between and few.

Reminds me of the perfume industry. Used to be, women had signature fragrances (and that may still be true in France; not sure). Here in the U.S., everyone seems interested in the most recent fragrance concoction. Which means plenty of mediocre new fragrances versus fewer but more distinctive fragrances of old. Rarely wear perfume anymore, and that would be true even if there weren’t so many people with fragrance sensitivities/allergies now.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

It is creating expectation on the part of the music-buying public for the newest flavor of the month. That discourages artist loyalty

That’d be a very odd effect, given the music industry’s been beating the drum for “we must encourage passionate fan loyalty” for years now. The backbone of the industry — radio — is also fairly closed-minded about trying new artists, so we’re much more likely to get the latest from some familiar name than a huge variety of newbies.

All the “radio is nothing, viral video, millions of new artists” stuff is happening outside the purview of the major labels, so it’s not an outcome of their strategy… and Lefwitz is always shrieking that it’s all about fan loyalty there, too.

What failed singles tell us is that the artist doesn’t have mass numbers of fans yet, so the old system wasn’t necessarily less “flavor of the month.” It was just that major labels had a lot more money to burn, so they kept trying.

I’ve been playing around with numbers, and even if we assume zero advances, it’s difficult to make a profit with any artist. If you do a radio push, that costs a fortune, so it requires ~125,000 in album sales just to pay back that and nothing more. [This would vary by format, of course.] If you don’t do a radio push, you’re stuck with existing fan base.

The way the system is supposed to work, the highly profitable “big names” provide the profits to finance development for the unprofitable newbies… but there are fewer big names now, and the next tier are relatively less profitable due to declining album sales and narrower radio playlists. So there’s less money to spend on development.

His album w/be available in hard copy ? I’m not a rock fan, but really appreciate the times I enjoyed watching season 10 interact w/each other….so I will purchase his album….He seems like a really good kid ……and a loving husband and father…..You go James !

  • justmefornow

Yes. It comes out April 8, 2014. It seems a long wait:)

  • Madilo

The bullet is now at 77 it was at 114 yesterday, hope he rebounds next week.

Is it due to AMAs ?

  • HMc

I think Higher than Heaven charted the highest

“Most popular song (by highest chart position achieved): Higher Than Heaven (Position: 3 on the US Rock Music Chart on 14 April, 2012)”
Do you think thats when he did the AI
    performance?

    http://www.music-chart.info/artist/163794/James-Durbin

  • justmefornow

Yes that was the night of the Idol performance. That other chart was from the week MOABD was released.

HTH was, btw, my favorite song off the album. Still glad that’s the one he performed on Idol.

  • HMc

Mine too , I always thought HTH should have been one of his singles…maybe his lead single . It would of been interesting to see how that would have worked out.

  • girlygirl

The AMAs are later today, so I wouldn’t think so. I don’t see any great jump – hasn’t GGG been inside the Top 100 and Home inside the Top 200 pretty consistently?

  • girlygirl

I don’t see James Durbin’s single on here. Isn’t it charting? (or are my eyes not working)

  • roarpen

No, it charted on rock singles earlier but has fallen off. There is no advertising or anything, its a “soft” release. They won’t start pushing it until after the holidays when they are getting ready to service it to radio. I do hope they give it a good push though, the song deserves it – its a good catchy song. But James has a relatively small “hardcore” fan base and the song will need a good strong push to get radio play and help it take off. Crossing my fingers that WindUp does this right.

  • roarpen

They were all set to release it as the last single. But then James and his team decided to use those resources for his sophomore album. I wish it were his lead-off single – it was so much better than LMB. I know Parachute is poppy, but its GOOD poppy. It’s a good song – unlike LMB. So I’m very hopefrul.

  • maymay

It is due to the album re-release. When singers release their albums, the songs` sales always increaes.

  • HMc

James Durbin is 164 on the itunes Rock chart not sure where he is on the overall

  • HMc

roarpen James is still on the itunes Rock chart
    at 164… now 178

  • Madilo

Home was #232 two days ago and 203 yesterday now it’s at #165, that’s a good jump if you ask me because we are talking about singles here.
And its been a long time since they left top 100 and 200.

  • Madilo

Maybe i’m not so sure though.

  • Jason Gorny

Kelly’s Wrapped in Red is back in the Top 10!

I love how you compared this to the perfume industry! I never would have thought of that but over-saturation is happening all over the market, which is why things don’t sell in general like they used to and why there’s no brand loyalty anymore. :/ So interesting…
