Marrialle Sellars – Wrecking Ball

OK. I’m still not getting all the fuss over and praise heaped on Marrialle. Here, the song proves to be way to big for her. At one point, she turns around and signals the band to take it down a notch. Hm.

Savion Wright – Original Song

He sounds fine to me, but the judges seem displeased. We’re left with Savion sitting in the judges room, during the Green Mile, awaiting his fate.

Neco Starr – Halo

Perhaps Neco should have considered singing this song in a lower key? His falsetto is OK, but he sounds unpleasant when he goes for some of the high notes in his chest voice. Compliments from the judges, all around, however.

  • Landon Cox

What an odd choice for Marrialle; I don’t think she has the power to sing Wrecking Ball arranged like that over the backing vocals. MIley’s tone is so nasally it stamps everything out, plus she has studio magic. Marrialle has a rasp that doesn’t lend itself to punching like that chorus should.

  • Blirel

    Ok reviews
Savion- he was decent but by far his worst performance yet song was one-dimensional
Marialle- great voice but no power and makes bad song decisions (she should be singing indie songs like majesty not sure she could do them justice but it is more her style)
Neco- the best of the 3 has a great voice even when he is sick he sounds great

  • Birdiex

Marialle kinda has the “look” of a popstar down.

  • ptebwwong

That’s kinda how I feel. I don’t think her voice is great. But I could see labels/producers liking her image & think they can “mold her” to become marketable.

  • Larc

I think Marrialle is already TCO for this seaon. I just don’t see it. With any luck, the voters won’t play along if she reaches that point.

  • JustJam

She seems to have a cheery personality as well. Maybe that’s great for TV.

  • Birdiex

Idk, usually TCO get a lot of airtime in Hollywood. She had zero for both the solo and group rounds.

  • Sassycatz

To be honest, I haven’t quite gotten their excitement over Marrialle either, but I’m also dumbfounded that Miley Cyrus is a star. So, there must be something I don’t get that’s beyond singing.

  • Larc

I think the first requirement for a pro singer is to be a good singer. Once presence of the meat and potatoes has been established, then – and only then – the gravy should be assessed.

  • ptebwwong

In theory, a pro singer should be a good singer. However, there are many current artists who aren’t due to auto-tune, technology, & other factors.

  • Incipit

Eh, I can see these three going through – but IDK how the voting public will respond to them. I don’t pay attention to piles of Kudos – I want to hear what they can do that makes them stand out.

They are all competent – but they will need more than that to compete. We shall see.

    JMO.

  • Incipit

I would have agreed with you once upon a time, Larc. But Idol has ignored its own “guidelines” before. At least, as long as there is no auto-tune on stage, we know when they are doing it. Not that it matters much.

    ETA, or, what ptebwwong said.

  • Amy Beth

As any Brady Bunch fan can tell you, this stuff precedes the current technology.

Greg was going to be a pop star because he “fit the suit”.

  • Mafs95

I’m not a fan of Neco. He’s not a bad singer, but he always sounds so shrill when he attempts the high notes and I think he has a lot of bad singing habits.

Marrialle has an interesting tone but her delivery was a bit meh, tbh. I think TPTB see in her more of a edgy personality / look and that’s why they seem to like her. She can be very marketable if given the right material.

  • ptebwwong

Of course it does. There are terrible singers/artists in every decade. It didn’t just start. However, IMO there are more recently due to technology & other factors (Ex. concentration on image).

  • AHotDamnMess

No Neco, No…just no. Only small dogs from miles away understand what he’s saying. Im not feeling marrialle either, but at least they haven’t shoved her down our throats during Hollywood week. The first couple previews they showed the other day were much better than these 3.

  • macfae

of the three, I would choose Savion.- he is interesting to me, writing and performing his own songs for these judges shows a lot of security in himself.
Marialle is just so “like me, like me” but that would equal malleable for producers so they would be loving her especially with her look.
I haven’t cared for any of Neco’s performances, just not my style.

  • Ronnie D

Neco Starr is hungry! He just needs to learn not to push his vocals so much because it will damage his voice.

  • vd88

I think Neco just needs to not stop trying be this whole power singer he’s attempting to be. He says he’s influenced by Bruno Mars and I think that’s the problem, like Neco’s biting off more than he can chew. For him I picture like Miguel. he can sing and correct me if I’m wrong he’s not really a power singer, he has a smooth, suave vibe about him that just works. That’s where Neco needs to go.

  • John Deets

I thought they all sounded pretty awful, ESPECIALLY Marrialle. Actually Nico was pretty terrible too.. Man if they got through to the top 30 this must be a bum season :(

I actually thought savion was far better than either of them.

  • Kesia Monteith

Even if this wasn’t his best, Savion is still one of the better contestants on the show. Well, to me anyway, because I adore him. LOL

  • Kirsten

Hey, Neco! Bruno Mars called. He wants his act back.

Why do some people get called out by the judges for being karaoke versions of other artists and this guy is practically a photocopy (or a photocopy of a photocopy) of Bruno and he doesn’t get called?

  • carola99

I don´t get all the buzz about Marielle. She might have a bit of a star quality, but still she doesn´t sing good enough.
Neco and Savion are just ok. Nothing special. Next.

  • Incipit

“.. some people get called out by the judges for being karaoke versions of other artists…”

    And some people don’t…

I’d say he doesn’t get called out if Interscope is interested in this copy of a copy and thinks they can make money off of his copying. They did it before, why not?

    JMO.

  • Christopher Auyeung

Marielle is such a weak vocalist. I feel like inevitably, she and Majesty are going to get compared (BGWG, short hair, cute), and it’s not really even a competition IMO. Majesty is SO much better.

  • Shannon Hayden

that is a stage name. Marielle is not her real name.her real name is erica bell http://youtu.be/HW3WU195Q0c she even says her name is erica on this video.necco starr is a stage name to.his real name is deneco pittman and he was arrested in 2010.

  • http://mjsbigblog.staging.wpengine.com/ mjsbigblog

Unless she’s covering up the fact that she killed a guy,. or something, what’s the big deal that she’s using a stage name, like tons of other people in show business?

As far as Neco is concerned, I’d be careful throwing around gossipy accusations unless you really know what you’re talking about.

  • Incipit

It will be interesting to see if Reality Check mentions that. The thing about Marrialle has been out on the web since last Tuesday – at the least, so I’d guess they don’t find it a big deal.

  • HKfan

Everytime I’ve seen him so far, I just think he’s a Bruno wannabe…

  • Blueknight24

I’m sure Neco Starr is trying to show his vocal abilities in every performance, But that might hurt him in the long run, He should show his artistry and show who he is as an artist. I saw his YT videos and it’s way too different than what he’s showing on the show. I hope he realize that soon.

  • Jaejae1

Marialle’s Miley-like-ness is really distracting to me. She shouldn’t sing wrecking ball. And I think Neko Starr is really annoying for some reason. i don’t think either of them will get far in the competition.
