*My dress rehearsal spy said everyone was so much better in rehearsal (she was also at the live show). She says, “nerves got to them, big time.”

Sadly, tonight was pretty much charisma-free, except for a few flashes from Crystal Bowersox, Lee DeWyze and Michael Lynche. Big Mike seemed most comfortable singing big band songs, while Casey James was hopelessly out of his element.

Aaron Kelly gave his typical cute-kid-at-a-high-school-assembly performance and will probably get a zillion votes as a result. The kids did not bring the swing to Sinatra. I would love to know what Harry Connick really thought of those performances–and Frank Sinatra’s daughters sitting in the audience, too.

Live blog, videos and photos after the jump…

Tonight, the kids sing selections from the Sinatra songbook. Harry Connick Jr. is on hand to mentor. He will also take the stage tonight as the contestants perform his arrangements. If we can handle the filler (Only 5 performances tonight!) it could be a great night of music…

Only 5 remain, and they’re all standing on the stairs as Ryan Seacrest makes his way down. Harry Connick Jr. is at the bottom, and he gets to say, “This is American Idol!”

Ryan introduces the judges who are already seated. The Top 5 take the stage. They’re dressed for the occasion. Crystal is on Big Mike’s arm.

Harry’s video package rolls. Frank Sinatra is the original American Idol. Harry says Frank was the pinnacle of interpreting songs. Harry says he’s writing “supportive arrangements”. Harry introduces the band. He’ll be playing piano. Harry calls the contestants “great” and “humble”.  – VIDEO

Nancy and Tina Sinatra in the house! – They give Simon Cowell, a huge Sinatra fan, one of Frank’s monogrammed hankies.

Aaron Kelly – “Fly me to the Moon” – Wait, why does Harry call Aaron Big Mike? I guess that was a joke. He’s giving Aaron technical advice I’m not sure he understands. This isn’t starting off well. It’s strained. The phrasing is terrible. The kid is out of his depth totally. Please voters, make the madness stop. PLEASE. This is not good. So dull. The kid is such an amateur in every sense of the word. TOO YOUNG to be here. Randy says, “Dude you did a really good job.” SERIOUSLY? Ellen says, “I thought the piano was a little pitchy…I was worried, I can’t believe I didn’t hear any country, beautiful vocals.” Kara says, “Not strong compared to last week. I think you’ll be here again, but you need to learn charisma, you still need to get there. You are so close.” Simon says, “I’m with Kara on this one, Frank was the king of cool, if he was a lion, you were just a mouse, no conviction…the vocals at the end were a bit corny, but people like you after you perform, I’m going to give you that.” – 1-866-436-57011-866-436-5706VIDEO

Casey James – “Blue Skies” – Sit down with Ryan:  One of Casey’s friends called him with a gig. The friend had no idea he was on Idol! Casey is a Harry fan! Harry appreciates Casey’s blusey goove. Hm. This is very strange. I really am pulling for Casey, but I don’t think this is working for him. He’s straining on the high notes, and he looks completely uncomfortable up there out of his element. Wow. Yikes. Oh Casey, I think you’re going home. Randy says, “This was your worst performance, you were out of your element. It just didn’t work.” Ellen says, “That felt very stiff to me. I didn’t feel like you were cool or effortless. I agree with Randy.” Kara says, “It took you a while to warm up. At least you held some notes. But the bad thing is that you sound like a lamb ‘bahhhh” your vibrato is out of control” OMG she didn’t! Simon says, “This is really uncomfortable. You weren’t fantastic. I thought you came over a bit embarrassed and a bit uncomfortable. The good news is that you have a booking for next week.” Ouch! Harry says he sang it better in rehearsal. “You killed it about 2 hours ago.” – 1-866-436-57021-866-436-5707VIDEO

Tonight is not going well… Sir Anthony Hopkins is in the house.

Crystal Bowersox – “Summer Wind” – Harry says he felt Crystal’s connection to the song. “There’s nothing I need to tell you,” says Harry. Crystal looks beautiful. OMG Crystal can sing anything. She’s sensational. I LOVE the beginning of this song. (One of my fav Sinatra songs). There are a couple of weird things in the middle, though, and the band drowns her out a bit, but her phrasing is really good. Randy says, “It was a great arrangement, but it was a little sleepy for me.” Ellen says, “It felt like you were swallowing some words, it got better in the second half.” Ellen is impressed with Crystal’s versatility. Kara says, “I kind of liked it. I liked your phrasing. It’s a big thing this week.” Simon says, “I love this song, it felt a little bit indulgent, the second half was a lot better, not one of your strongest performances. Now it’s about being in it to win it.” Hm. I actually liked the beginning better. I thought the band overpowered her. – “I don’t feel like I should be singing really big notes, just because I’m on American Idol,” says Crystal. Simon says, “I’m giving you this advice to help you.” Eep. 1-866-436-57031-866-436-5708VIDEO

Mike Lynche – “The Way You Look Tonight” – Sit down with Ryan: Mike talks about his band back in New York. This is one of Harry’s favorite songs. This is a really good vocal. Absolutely the best of the night. Mike is swinging–he looks comfortable, he’s totally feeling this song. He takes advantage of Connick’s arrangement. Randy says, “Unbelievable arrangement, Unbelievable vocal, Mike is in it to win it!” Ellen says, “You seem to have the most comfort on stage, you look the part, very smooth, a lot of charisma” Kara says, “You find the drama in the song, you took us on a journey, you didn’t lose yourself in the song.” Simon says, “This has been a tricky night. The first 3 performances have been OK. With you, that’s all changed. I loved that I felt that you listened, and everyone worked together. It all just clicked. Well done”. Yep. Mike clicked and worked with the band, like another instrument. He got it. 1-866-436-57041-866-436-5709VIDEO

Lee DeWyze – “That’s Life” – Harry and his  wife like Lee a lot. Harry jokes around with Lee, making faces behind his back.  Lee still needs to work on his pitch. And Lee, Frank would call you out on your diction! But, the phrasing here is really good, and Lee is giving the song some swagger. I see some confidence. For someone completely out of his element, he’s doing really well. Randy says, “You know what? Another great arrangement. You stayed your rocker self. I loved it.” Ellen says, “At first I was distracted by Harry’s organ. [Ha ha] If this was the last night of performances, you would have just won this whole thing.” Kara asks Lee: “Do you think you can win?” Yes says, Lee. Kara tells him to go home and write “I can win” 10o times, because she believes he can. Simon says, “Harry you’ve been incredible tonight, Harry brought out your personality and confidence. By far the best performance of the night.” I don’t know. Compared to the great performances of past seasons, it was just a’ight, you know? We are grading on a curve here…1-866-436-57051-866-436-5710VIDEO

Lee could totally win this thing.

I love HCJ and I love Sinatra and I love these songs…and I pretty much liked the performances last night. My ranking:

    Best:
Michael: As much as I dislike Big Mike, I think he really nailed it. Loved his phrasing and his spin on the tune. Really nice.

    Very Good:
Lee: Was that the perfect song for Lee or what? I loved his kind of scrappy hangdog swagger.
Crystal: Yes, I think she was too quiet in the beginning, but I blame that more on the sound guy than her. I don’t even like that song, but I thought she made it really lovely.

    Lower Meh:
Aaron: He never got a handle on the song at all…not the lyrics or the melody or the emotion.

    Bad:
Casey: You know, I think “Blue Skies” should have worked for him. When Casey sings his best, he does convey a gritty, earthy pathos, which is the underlying mood of this song. But somehow he missed it here.

  • earthy

With any luck Crappy James will be going home tonight.

Many believe Crystal is in the bottom 3 (if it is 3) which I agree as the only one I see 100% safe is Lee after last night.

Awwwwh. Please say it ain’t so. :) I agree that Crystal will most likely be in the bottom three with Aaron and Casey.

Okay, I’m very intrigued. How do you get gritty pathos out of the Blue Skies lyrics? Or is it something about the melody?

  • JW

Willie Nelson sings Blue Skies and does an incredible job with it…believe it or not. :) I am going to search for studio version for Casey/Blue Skies. Don’t and Jealous Guy are awesome and I would buy album if he records thusly.

  • lucy

I think he kind of screwed himself by choosing what, to me, is kind of a chipper, overly repetitious, non-emotional song.

I’m waiting for the explanation of how you get gritty pathos into it — because if it had had that, I think he would have done many many times better with it. With Jealous Guy, he was able to use the complexity and emotionality of the song to good advantage. He’s really at his worst when singing happy upbeat kind of mindless stuff — which, to me, includes Blue Skies and Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow. …. Blue Skies, in particular, was just too far down that line for him to handle well, to me. … And it took him to parts of his voice that scare him, too, I think.

I agree with you with song choice. Have you listened to Lennon singing Jealous Guy? Awesome in writing but poor in delivery IMO and I thought Casey did the song justice. It almost seemed liked two different songs with the delivery. I know Casey had an off night but I would really like to see him stay on as I think he has more potential than Aaron or Big Mike…or even the other two. :)

yeah, I agree. I like the Donny Hathaway version of Jealous Guy — and also thought that Casey did a very fine job!

Casey or Aaron will go home. Oops I had to look up thread to remember Aaron’s name…Mike took notes from bloggers and dialed back the macho but he’s not my fav. Lee is getting better but I have to like the person and how they perform on stage or the music sounds like everybody else.

Based on all the top 10 performances:
Crystal (I’ve bought all Crystal’s itunes)
    Lee
    Mike
Casey (Bought 1 of Casey’s; Jealous Guy)
    Aaron

I’m not worried for Crystal but IF her vote tally was #3 they will make a big deal about her being in the bottom three even though she’ll be there by default of the votes vs. contestants left.

If she is voted off I’ll stop watching.

If TPTB are smart and sign her, regarless of where she places, they would do well to bring in people to write with who’ve talked her up on their own like Melissa Etheridge. Crystal is all about the power of women in music and her pre-idol stuff is really moving.

As a person who was kinda out of the music scene till Adam brought me back to buying/following an artist I now have a new talent to watch and buy albums from – Crystal.

I never knew I would like glam/dance/rock till Adam and I really did not like power folk/singer/song-writer till Crystal’s Holy Toledo – if her her album is anything like her pre-idol stuff with better production value Imma buying.

Honestly I think they need better themes this season, for the remainder of the season anyway. something a little more up to date wouldnt hurt.

For sure life support is needed! This is a overall boring group and the least talented of any group thus far IMO. Crystal has good vocals but for me she is not a total package. I am fine hearing her but watching her is a different story and I just have an inclination to turn away when I see her. I will probably not watch if Casey is voted off as he is the only one that has kept me tuning in. Lee’s facial expressions make me think he needs more fiber so it is difficult to watch him as well. Michael I have already discussed so will not go there and Aaron needs to mature some.

  • mozart4898

It really seems that the tone here kinda changed since last night/early morning when I made my rather lengthy post defending Crystal. I still stand by what I said but I am sorry if it came across pretty harsh – I don’t know if MJ was referring to me or not earlier. :-) But I’m glad to see that it seems more of Crystal’s supporters have come out of the woodwork too. I do totally agree that if she really wants to win this thing, she needs to listen to the advice she’s been given and more or less “give the public what they want.” She’s shown herself to be more versatile than most people realized, but unfortunately the same people who were saying she was boring and always singing the same sorts of things, didn’t like it when she DID do something different. For the record I think an album by Crystal (if done the way she’d want it to be) would sound kinda halfway between performaces like “Me and Bobby McGee” and these past two weeks – a bit more restrained than the former but probably more “emotional” sounding than the last 2 weeks. I still think she’s the best one by far and I really hope to see her in the final 2.

The cool thing about the song “Blue Skies” is that the lyrics themselves are all upbeat, but the music is in the minor key. Depending on how you want to sing it, you can make it sound really bittersweet and ironic. Alexander’s Ragtime Band has Ethel Merman and Alice Faye (yes, I had to look that up…it’s been a while since college) singing “Blue Skies” from two very different perspectives, and the difference is striking.

Edited to add: I just youtubed the Willie Nelson version. I think Casey was going for something like this. I still think it should have worked for him; I’m kind of at a loss as to why it didn’t.

Thanks. I’ll have to look for those. Every version I know has it sounding pretty darned jaunty, despite the minor key!

By the way, HCJ mentored the contestants on Big Band week on Australian Idol last year and they wiped the floor with this year’s American Idol crop. Last season’s Australian Idol winner (Stan Walker) did a big band version of “Single Ladies” and it was quite fantastic.

It WAS fantastic! And I couldn’t even hear him very loudly without my speakers plugged in. He put on a SHOW. It was cool. That being said I can just hear Simon being sarcastic to the guy.

A good theme would be nice

I haven’t really had a big problem with the themes – I don’t remember if I’ve said it on this board or another one, but regardless of what theme they pick, the music isn’t going to be 100% “current.” At best the songs they’ll sing will still be a couple years old. And in the end, they’d have some of the same problems – some of them will sound like karaoke, others will sound ok or good, it all just depends on their choice of song and most importantly, how well they perform it. Even if it’s not someone’s particular favorite kind of music, they should be able to tell who’s decent and who isn’t. The two biggest things that may have hurt people last night were singing someone else’s arrangement (even though they were all good arrangements, I thought), and the fact they were told they couldn’t play instruments. Casey may have been totally different if he could have simply strummed a guitar a few times in his song, and had the arrangement go a bit more to the bluesy side. I won’t begrudge someone an instrument if they can sing with it, and he’s definitely a better singer with it than without.

  • GaryJ

I don’t understand the ass licking of Mike. The dude is a giant cornball, he has okay vocals but nothing terribly special. Tonight included, it was a wedding singer performance. He should definitely go home this week, he’s brought nothing new or unique in his time on idol.

Yes, but at least he is sensitive enough and clever enough to read the blogs and stop the obnoxious behavior that was turning people off, like lifting people up etc. And when he was voted off (peeps forget that) and had to be saved by the judges, that was probably a big wake-up call. He was full of himself before that. He has reached a point now where he is almost likeable. That is positive growth too.

And he can’t be voted off this week, because Kara would have a nervous breakdown if he were.

  • mozart4898

^^^ Agreed. While Mike’s persona might still rub some people the wrong way, as a singer, he definitely still belongs. Taken as a whole, I would still consider him the second best overall singer left.

  • JW

I suspect nerves and pressure got to Casey last night. It was apparent from HCJ remarks that Casey had nailed the song a couple of hours earlier. The more I think about it, the better it may be for Casey to exit now before the show goes down further.

  • mozart4898

Not sure if this has been posted anywhere else, but Crystal is still holding onto quite a lead on this poll. This poll hasn’t seemed to be too good at determining who is the lowest vote getter though, as Aaron has had the lowest percentage almost every week and keeps hanging on.

I’d also add being up there with the 12 piece band . My daughter said when she sang with the school stage band its the hardest thing she’s done as it was so hard to hear her own voice. I know it was the same for everyone but when Casey has been quoted as saying he “never” sings without guitar , I understand the difficulty he faced . He is used to having the chords to go by when he sings & without that he was a bit lost. So they forced him to do this- what did they expect? I don’t think he was as bad as the judges said.
Interestingly on our Australian broadcast the comments from Simon & Casey about the Gig next week wasn’t shown.
Casey is like Crystal- they know who they are musically & when they are forced to do something a bit different it doesn’t quite work!!

Children do not bring the swing to Sinatra. I wonder what Harry Connick really thought about these performances, and the daughters of Frank Sinatra sat in the audience.
