Check out this week’s American Idol 13 Top 7 Song Spoilers! Supposedly, these songs were on iTunes, but I can’t find them right now.

Damn. I’m not seeing any sabotage here! Heh. The contestants chose pretty well for each other.

I’m confused as to which “Sail Away” Sam Woolf is singing. There’s the Enya song, and the Randy Newman song. Then there’s “Come Sail Away” by Styx. David Grey has a version. Maybe that’s it, but it’s kind of boring, even with a singer with the ability to emote.

Did Sam Woolf choose for Alex Preston? I can’t wait to see how Alex changes up “A Team” Or, maybe I can. Kings of Leon has never been sung on American Idol before. I’m looking forward to Caleb singing a contemporary song. KOL is rooted firmly in the blues, but with a contemporary twist, there’s potential for good stuff here. Jena Irene should sing “Creep” completely behind the piano. She could have a powerful moment. “Muckalee Creek Water” is ballady, so Dexter should do OK. Jess Meuse needs to shed her inhibitions and bring the attitude tonight when she sings “Gunpowder and Lead.”

“Gravity” could be great if CJ stays reasonably on key.

  • Vetle

I love Jena’s song. They didn’t really challenge the others though…

  • Amy Beth

Sam’s song–it’s got to be the David Gray song, I assume. He wouldn’t sing Enya or Randy Newman, would he?

  • Aaron Krandel

I like all of the choices except for CJ’s… I hate to say it, but Dexter’s is perfect.. My jena will kill it. I know Jess’s has been done a few times, but I think she’ll sound great on it. Alex has a good cover of his on YT. Sam’s dong hasn’t been done and I think he will do well with his. I imagine Caleb will change his up.

  • ladymctech

It seems like they must have been pretty nice to each other with song suggestions.

  • Sassycatz

Muckalee Creek Water by Luke Bryan? Is this a popular song that all these contestants would know or did CJ pick it for him?

  • nystargate

A batch of songs I’m bored with or don’t know, hooray?

  • torngorn

jena has a creep cover on youtube its really good and looking forward to jessica’s song too. i hope its a better week few last weeks i have barley been able to watch everyone’s performances

  • KiaMichelle

I only know Gunpowder and Lead from when Skylar Laine performed it. I was not a fan of Skylar at the time but I do not think Jess can pull it off unless it’s slowed down from Skylar’s version.(which I hope it isnt).

  • Madilo

    Not A Team again ugh.

  • Landon Cox

    I think it’s AWOL Nation

Edit: JK that’s just Sail, never mind!

  • Aaron Krandel

The iTunes clips sound great, everyone change their iTunes to suit the Philippines

  • Rúben Guzman

    can you send links?

  • Aaron Krandel

Cj is Gravity by John Mayer :). I don’t know how how to send links to iTunes

  • pj

Jess is my favorite, but she’s not exactly fierce, which I think this song requires. We shall see.

  • MV007

Ugh. Another Creep performance. I hate that song and I hate when contestants on these shows perform it.

  • KiaMichelle

Yeah I like her voice. She definitely needs to find some ‘oomph’ tonight and bring some attitude. The deer in the headlights look aint gonna work. But she’s safe every week anyway so it probably wont matter.

  • Rúben Guzman

Sam Woolf’s song is Sail Away by David Gray

  • pj

Probably won’t matter. Maybe she’ll be better at being fierce than being “sexy.”

  • MichaelG

I see everyone is, predictably, remaining in their respective wheelhouse. No stepping outside the comfort zone for this group. ;)

  • http://anibundel.com/ anibundel

    …Sail Away? Seriously?
    You’re pulling my leg.

  • Larc

AWOL Nation’s is just “Sail.” That is on the cleared list, though. No “Sail Away” is.

  • Guest

    :)

  • http://anibundel.com/ anibundel

I was thinking Styx, but that’s “Come Sail Away.”

Or there’s also Christopher Cross. Which, if it’s that, Imma fall off my couch laughing.

  • Anna106

They picked for each other ??? What does this mean? Did they draw names? It sounds like another week when they’ll sing another song from their ‘set’.

  • KiaMichelle

If Alex changes the arrangement this week, I am going to flip.

  • Pat H

This could be a moment for Jena. Wonder if she’ll stay at the piano? Sam’s is definitely not the Randy Newman song. He sounds great but I am guessing there will be no connection again due to the lyrics of a love song. Loving Caleb too! Jessica sounds perfect for this song. If she can put some sass into the performance this could be really great! OK, that’s it. Can not force myself to listen to Dexter and CJ! Or “A Team” again! LOL!

  • Kirsten

Alex Preston – A Team by Ed Sheeran – eating Sam’s lunch who made his rep singing Ed – somebody gave him this song as a gift.

CJ Harris – Gravity by Josh Turner -Eh? Josh doesn’t sing the soulful country songs that CJ does well with. He’s more reflective, longing. This is out of CJs range and will give him trouble. This is a dirge

Dexter Roberts – Muckalee Creek Water by Luke Bryan -Luke Bryan is Bro’ Country. Dexter has friends too although this one is a little less anthemic than others and the song goes nowhere. Is this a Trojan Hourse choice?

Jena Irene – Creep by Radiohead – this song is a bit of trap. People love this song, but it’s hard to keep the critics happy.

Jess Meuse – Gunpowder and Lead by Miranda Lambert – This is absolutely the best song choice. She will kill it. Dead. It’s fun to get into it and she can even smile while she kills the guy in the song. Harry can’t even question her choice because she did not pick it.

Caleb Johnson – Family Tree by Kings of Leon – this doesn’t really suit him, but it does have a bit of groove. There is nothing to showcase his vocals.

Sam Woolf – Sail Away – Somebody hates this kid. This treacle is hard to work with. I think we are going to watch him sail away this week.

    Winners Jess, Alex, Dexter
    Iffy Caleb, Jena
Set up to Lose Sam, CJ

  • Christopher Bee

    another snoozefest

  • Kirsten

Well, that would be better than the song I’m thinking of with “Sail Away” because that is totally doomed.

  • Amy Beth

The Christopher Cross song is called “Sailing”.

  • Rúben Guzman

On iTunes it definitely sounds like that

  • Larc

Is that certain? There are several songs floating around by that name including a very anthemic one from the 90s.

  • Trina

Whoever picked for Dexter and Alex gave them presents wrapped in a bow. Perfect songs for them.

  • Call_girl

wow I guess no-body wants to win this show. LOL

I am worried for Jessica she is finally going to sing a Country song. she might be gone this week.

Did someone give Sam an Enya song?

  • Rúben Guzman

Yeah On iTunes it sounds like that version

  • amadcow2

I would think that this is a two song night, so for the first set of spoilers…

Caleb – Family Tree.. This song is kind of slow and boring. If Caleb can liven it up, he’s in good shape. If he goes karaoke then he’s mid to bottom of the pack

Alex – The A Team.. Okay, this song is already in Alex’s wheelhouse, so he’s obviously going to change it and I can’t see that as a good thing. Tough one here. Either he’s too karaoke or he neuters the song.

Jena – Creep is a good choice for Jena. If she does a good rearrangement, she’ll do well. She needs to bring the intensity or risk neutering the song though.

Dexter – Muckalee Creek Water is right in Dexter’s wheelhouse. He’s not going anywhere… I guess.

Jessica – Gunpowder and Lead is perfect for Jessica… IF… she can emote on her performance, or if all the lights go out and we just have to listen to her.

CJ – Gravity is soulful and not much of a stretch, so CJ could do well. It’s just a boring song.

Sam – Sail Away, I’m assuming the David Gray song here and well, Sam will give a competent vocal with the look of a terrified dog on his face. Seems kind of boring, but that’s Sam’s wheelhouse.

BASED on these, I would say the top is Jessica and Dexter, with Jena, Alex, and Caleb in the pack and the perennial Sam and CJ at the bottom. Honestly it’s a toss up on which of those two would go home based on these song choices.

  • Amy Beth

Josh Turner has a song called Gravity in his discography. Is it a cover of Mayer’s or a different song?

  • maymirabella

That was my first thought too, Christopher. I am just so bored with this season and the contestants and most of the song choices.

  • amadcow2

Dexter yes, but Alex is trapped here. He’s either going to re-arrange the heck out of the song (alienating those who like it) or sound SO much like the original as to bring nothing new to it. Alex has a bit of a mine field there.

  • http://www.mjsbigblog.com/ mjsbigblog

It won’t be a two song night until Top 6. Fourteen songs would be a bit much even for a two hour show.

    Expect more trios and duets.

  • MichaelG

But Sam did David Gray’s Babylon Top 10 boys’. And Gray’s Sail Away, whilst over a decade old, is the most current of the songs by that name. And it is well within Sam’s vocal range.

  • http://elizabethrosalyn.com/ Elizabeth Rosalyn

Yeah. I mean, there are good songs on this list, but none of them say “I wanna win American Idol!!!”

  • amadcow2

Oh my, more trios and duets… this season that’s an exercise in suffering abuse.

  • Trina

Yeah but they didn’t pick these songs. Granted many choices over the last few weeks have been bad but this week I’ll cut them all some slack. Now they have to take these songs and go out there and perform them the best they can to show they want to win.

  • b_james

Every time I look at the top 7, I’m still wishing who I could replace with contestants who have gotten the boot. I’m usually over that by now! That being said, way to go for not picking any song done too memorably on Idol in the past (other than Gunpowder and Lead, I guess)

  • dy

Sigh. This group and their song choices… I’m not even a Caleb fan but that’s the only song choice on this list I’m looking forward to hearing.

  • dy

Well, they did pick these songs… they just picked bad songs for each other instead of themselves this week.

  • http://elizabethrosalyn.com/ Elizabeth Rosalyn

True, but I think it shows that this whole group isn’t capable of picking songs that add something different, interesting, and challenging to the competition. That’s been my main issue with this season.

  • Kimmy Moores

If Jess can channel the attitude her own song lyrics have then her song should be sufficient.
I don’t really have high expectations for tonight so whatever…

  • Sassycatz

    Sam’s dong hasn’t been done

Now, now. We don’t know whether his dong has been done, but what about his song?

  • tripp_ncwy

IDK there is no David Cook to mentor this week. We are left with Randy undoing all the good David’s mentoring dgave to the idols last week.

  • Sowsyalite

So Sam is singing another David Gray song.

  • AMStaton

Caleb Johnson’s Facebook page confirms duets. Here is his post from last night: “Gonna
be doing a badass Kings of Leon song tomorrow night as well as another
killer duet with Jena Irene on a Rolling Stones classic ! Spread the
word and tune in tomorrow night it’s gonna be a party !”

  • Damien Roberts

Michael Slezak seems pretty sure that Sam’s doing David Gray. He also thinks that C.J. is doing “Gravity” by John Mayer.

  • Sowsyalite

You’re right. This season would have worked better I think if the themes were more restrictive just so to force contestants to think outside of the box and not be singing what they sing in their bedrooms.

  • Damien Roberts

And based on performance order last week, chances are good that Jena closes the show.

  • girlygirl

Boring predictable song choices. The one good thing is that some of these songs have not been covered on Idol before. But that’s the only good thing. Once again, no one is stepping outside his or her box.

  • jcabby

I can’t wait to hear Caleb sing a modern song from a popular band. I think he’ll do great.
Wow, Jena is taking on a song that is a favorite among purists.
I have no doubt Alex will do great with Ed Sheeran’s song. He does well changing up popular songs.
    Great song choice for Jess.

  • Pat H

Yay for Caleb and Jena together again! Let’s hope Harry doesn’t steal the spotlight again!!

  • Call_girl

“What no Whitney or Celine?” – Note my Sarcasm. LMAO

  • Pat H

Has it ever been mentioned that what might be keeping CJ and Dexter in the competition is the Alabama connection? Jessica too, although I think she deserves to be Top 4. Alabama has a history of supporting their Idols! And with the new voting so easy, voting for 3 is really not splitting your vote anymore . Easy to get 100+ votes in for 3 contestants in less than 5 minutes. Used to be you’d have to choose one because of the time element of just voting by phone, especially for anyone that did not have AT & T. Just a thought!

  • Sassycatz

The only one who could conceivably get “help” from him this week is Jena. David used to cover “Creep” in his pre-Idol days with his band, Axium, and there are a number of videos of one of his performances on Youtube. (Be warned. He does the “raunchy” version which I’m sure Jena won’t do.;-)

  • Call_girl

Love me some Jessica. hopefully no bottom 3.

  • Sassycatz

Yeah, but CJ keeps slipping into the bottom, so I don’t think it’s going to be helping him much longer.

  • Larc

Michael Slezak at TV Line is confirming it is David Gray’s.

  • Sowsyalite

Haha. But it would also have been very interesting if any of the boys could deliver a Whitney or Celine. That would liven up this season!

  • jt45

Much better than last week at least… Gunpowder and Lead though? Meh

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Well, I don’t feel the burning urge to blow off Idol for the sake of Michael’s having a 50% off sale on Fimo, like I did last week.

I’m mostly down with this song list. At this stage in the game, I’d be happy and entertained to see really good performances “in their wheelhouse” — I’m more interested in seeing serious visible growth in the performance areas where these singers have been notably weak than in getting out-of-genre song picks. My vague impression of the outcome of Cook’s mentoring was that the needs for growth arcs were pretty much nailed down, so there are actual things they could work on that benefit from more than one week’s effort.

I mean, when I go to a club to see a band, I expect that band to perform in a way consistent with whatever’s on their Youtube or Reverbnation or whatever site… possibly even the same songs. I want to be delighted by how well they do it, but if they don’t deviate from that track, I’m totally fine with the evening.

  • Call_girl

True but how shady, Alex you can sing anything well sing Celine. LOL

  • John Mark Legacion

According to the iTunes recording, no flipping was done.

  • Call_girl

Yeah. I feel like if Jess wants to win she will nail it or crash n burn!
    Its country and upbeat.

  • Larc

I agree 14 at 1½ minutes per would be too many to fit into the Idol version of 2 hours. It would eat too much into their silly-filler time. ;)

  • Kesia Monteith

Thank you for saying this. I get the lack of “outside the box” thinking could be killing the season, but I’m just glad that most of these songs are not done to death. And at least most of the choices are very current.

  • ptebwwong

It’s never been mentioned about the Alabama connection. However, IMO North Carolina has a good track record, too. NC has 2 winners (Fantasia & Scotty). They have a variety of talent that also went far in the competition & many of them had success post-Idol (Daughtry, Kellie, Clay, etc.). Caleb has never been in the B3.

  • Vetle

Sail Away is such a nostalgic song for me. Alejandro Fuentes from Norwegian Idol 2005 covered it and it became a huuuge hit for him here in Norway. I mean, I heard it on the radio just yesterday. I don’t think Sam can do it better.

  • Lexie O’Neill

Gravity by Josh Turner is not a well-known song, it wasn’t even a single, I believe. It’s an album cut (I own all of JT’s albums) and I like the song, but it’s not a barn burner.

  • jt45

She could probably do well with it I just think she needs more songs that will give her a moment. Otherwise she’ll never have one.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

It would eat too much into their silly-filler time. ;)

Well, with Easter coming up, TPTB probably think they owe it to America to show us what the judges do with a chocolate bunny. HCJr strikes me as an ears-first kinda guy.

  • Prime_Minister

Here’s a video of Jena doing Creep pre-Idol – should be a good song for her. I like her interpretation of the lyrics.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7ZgyfNlGcs

  • jt45

I’m actually really excited for Jena……. this is good so she’ll be even better on the show. The song I love and she’s finally doing something slower.

  • MichaelG

Listened to most of the songs and am happy to report that the specifically tailored non-theme might make for fairly good viewing and listening. Guess we have to lower our expectations, keep grading on that curve and be happy if < 50% of the contestants produce a passable-to-good performance. ;) I'm not anticipating much "serious visible growth" tonight, however.

    ;)

  • Prime_Minister

Yeah, I was hoping for a slow song from her too so her vocals can shine. I checked out the arrangement on iTunes – not sure I like that it’s REALLY slow there, but I’m excited for tonight!

  • girlygirl

What are the odds that Alex tries to tell us that A Team — a song about a homeless drug addict who is prostituting herself — has a sweet meaning? :D

  • MichaelG

Lol…and the odds of whether he will perform it in his usual upbeat ‘Ingrid Michelson/Jason Mraz/Calypso/Celtic folk’ arrangement? ;)

  • WhoDat2012

The picks for Dexter and Alex are perfect!

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

I get the lack of “outside the box” thinking could be killing the season

You got me thinking (an achievement this morning!)… This season has actually had “outside the box” thinking. Preston’s “Don’t Speak” and “Every Breath You Take”… Malaya Watson’s “Long and Winding Road”… Ben Briley’s “Benny and the Jets”… Majesty Rose’s “Let It Go”… Woolf’s “Come Together” and “We Are Young”… Jena Irene’s RITD… CJ Harris’ “Free Fallin’”… the Meat Loaf Muffin’s “Edge of Glory” and “Skyfall”… and that’s probably not exhaustive as I skipped a week for a conference and another for vacation……

Some I liked a lot, some I loathed; but they consistently fell short of Moment-iness, due to pervasive performance quirks (the last one on the list might be an exception, but it’s YMMV). So I’m feeling good about the idea of making headway on the quirks before people try kicking the boundaries again. (Now I just hope they actually do!)

  • John Mark Legacion

    According to the iTunes recordings:

    1. No crazy re-arrangement from Alex Preston (good)
    2. Sam Woolf is singing David Grey’s “Sail Away”
    3. C.J. Harris is actually doing John Mayer’s “Gravity”, not the Josh Turner one.
    4. Jena will most probably be behind the keys for this one.

  • Pippygirl

I don’t think he will make that mistake again lol.

  • girlygirl

the studio recordings are often different arrangements than the live performances, though :)

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

If I were writing humorous fiction, Death of the Author Preston would turn that song into a paean to the joy and struggle of minor-league baseball.

WHY is there not a character in my serious novel who does this? *skitters off to consider serious edits*

  • WhoDat2012

Jena has probs with her lower register and sounds very breathy. Not sure about this song for her.

  • realdeal

I have learned from the Idol judges and Melinda Didlittle that burying your head in your shoulder, doing the pee-pee-leg-highwater-pants dance and turning every.single.song into a AAA lullaby is ARTISTIC! No need for an awkward boy to drop his guitar, engage the crowd or bring attitude. That a female requirement! Funny how a “true artist who ends on the 9″ cures my insomnia.

  • Call_girl

I am not sure about a lot of the songs she has song on this show because of the tone of her voice she surprises me every other day.

  • Landon Cox

They did it for top 7 redux in season 11, now and then theme.

  • Sassycatz

I’m not fond of the way her voice kind of wavers through almost every note. I’m not sure what that effect is called. It’s not quite melisma…. I would just like to hear her hit notes and sing them clean without sounding like she’s gargling through them.

  • Mateja Praznik

    Sadly, that’s the truth.

  • girlygirl

it could be about Nuke Laloosh!

  • KiaMichelle

    thank baby Jesus :)

  • lkingcorn

I like Jess and think the critiques the judges give her duly harsh compared to the sugar coating some get. One hopes Harry stays in his seat, as last week was just creepy. Btw I’m sure whatever Sail song Sam sings won’t be a moment, but one can hope.

  • WhoDat2012

    Gargling is a great description

  • Maj

Jena and Jess’s songs make me excited. I hope they pull them off.

  • Lisa

Jena and Jess could both have amazing moments with their songs. Alex is my fave this season, but could A Team be any more predictable for him?

  • MicheleAmabile

Not excited for the Miranda Lambert selection. Skylar Lane already did that-and country is so niche, which Jess is not..

  • Jim Shields

UGH family tree for Caleb? That’s a sabotage song

  • MicheleAmabile

Yep…He could do a good job with it..The chorus doesn’t really give him a chance to go for the big notes he wants to go for…we’ll see!

  • colette

This is such a screwy theme night for a screwy year. Aren’t these singers supposed to be competing with each other? It’s an easy set up for sabotage. “Gravity” could be a real snooze without Mayer’s killer guitar. I don’t know a lot of the other songs….

  • Jim Shields

    I couldn’t find it. have a link?

  • colette

Just listened to “Sail Away.” Another snooze, without David Gray’s bit of raspiness.

I am really much more interested in this season in “The Voice,” which I never preferred to Idol before. In part it’s because of the songs — they’re such a wide array of stuff from old Motown to Usher and Beyonce, new country, a duet version of “Happy” that mopped the floor with the cute Majesty. The talent is variable, but the tunes are really enjoyable.

  • http://untitlement.wordpress.com/ Caroline B
  • Ringo Pascual

Fortunately, Sam did not get the song. I fear that he would attribute the inspiration for his performance to his Grandmother.

  • Ringo Pascual

UGH! The song begs for nerdy vulnerability and nuance but Jena she give us the same overwrought drama of an Enya performance here. Damn the song, full speed ahead!!

  • Ringo Pascual

I was praying for the Randy Newman song. LOL.

  • Ringo Pascual

Based on her Blue Eyed Lie and Crow/Butterfly performances, she channels the primary color of love and hate real well. I like the choice for her.

  • http://untitlement.wordpress.com/ Caroline B

Caleb going for the Whitney glory notes!

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

If we get down to a Preston-Johnson Top 2, I might need to see TPTB hand each of them a Whitney Houston song.

The Meat Loaf Muffin would stage it as a huge rock number with BIIIIGGGGG notes, possibly turning expressions of undying love into his more usual expression of bitter rage at being jerked around. And this would be weirdly awesome.

Death of the Author Preston would turn the song into a delicate little jazzy coffeehouse number appropriate for a David Lynch movie, and this would be awesomely weird.

The ensuing face-off over which approach was True Artistry would pretty much sum up the differences in value proposition between the two.

  • http://untitlement.wordpress.com/ Caroline B

Caleb would do to a sweet love song what Alex did to Every Breath You Take.

  • HermeticallySealed

I don’t think you have to worry about “Sail Away” being an Enya song, the actual title is “Orinoco Flow.” ;P

Not really sure about these choices, but it should be interesting to see how they do.

  • Cary Gonzalez

    And thus the snooze-fest continues…

  • Kesia Monteith

This is must see TV right here LOL :P

ETA: Oh and honestly, please let there be a Whitney night. I knoe we are tired of her, but the some of the near trainwreck performances have actually entertained me this season. *snicker*

  • torngorn
  • chillj

Dam, I had to go research Fimo to find out if I needed any: I got some good 50% paper deals at Michael’s last week. Thought I missed something. :) (I would blow off Idol for a spectacular deal on fixative, though.)

  • Marko

Gargling is a form of singing :)

  • zubin

Here’s a 6 year old video of Jess covering Gunpowder and Lead. She can easily sing this song. Lambert is a much better artist for her to cover than Debbie Harry ever was ’cause they share that strong Southern woman thing, and a murder ballad is something you can imagine Jess writing. It could be a good template for working towards finding an engaging, believable stage persona while putting her own twist on it. Hope she finds a way to dirty it up a bit and make it authentically hers. Might be a good one for her to sing fronting the band on stage.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSh6_GnUQEw

  • Swind

The only performance I can see being good is Jena’s. It fits her “dark, rocker girl” vibe. Hope she’ll be doing this on piano like how she did “Decode”. Could be another moment for her.

  • WiltedYouth

Duets + trio have been revealed (song order, as well… Caleb’s going first for once, peeps): https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=737016336331371&set=a.337328262966849.86705.336043446428664&type=1&theater
“Let Her Go” by Passenger (Sam & Alex?)
“Gimme Shelter” by The Rolling Stones (Jena & Caleb)
“Compass” by Lady Antebellum (Jessica, Dexter & C.J.?)

  • Roimeister

and nasally gargling is reserved only for the geniuses

  • Roimeister

if your duet guesses are correct, I could be jumping up and down in my chair and shouting at the screen during “Gimme Shelter”

  • R. L. Lo

Comparing the AI finalists to well known entities playing at clubs seems an uneven comparison. I like to see the range of each contestants, and to get excited when they surprise us with their versatility, or disappointed when we see their lack thereof. Staying in their safe zone week after week gets really boring.

  • http://aquayers.blogspot.com aquayers

    Yawn!!!!!! o.o

  • WiltedYouth

Caleb posted on his Facebook that he was doing a Stones duet with Jena, so be prepared to do that jumping! :)

  • upsidedawn

rotflmao Aaron and Sassycatz! Yes, I guess I’m still in 6th grade.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

I hope your guesses about who sings what duets and trios are correct! Those all have the potential to be good.

Comparing the AI finalists to well known entities playing at clubs seems an uneven comparison.

I wasn’t. I go to see obscure local indie bands at clubs. I thought that was obvious if I had to get my ideas about their music off a Reverbnation page.

  • Marko

“Spare the author, kill the melody” Preston.
    Sorry, I couldn’t resist :)

  • Kimmy Moores

Dexter is moving up in the lineup for once. He’s in the middle performing now

  • Damien Roberts

Thats what I was thinking too. I am not a huge country fan, but the John Mayer song makes much more sense…unless Dexter picked a song for C.J.

  • Marko

What about Gloria Estefan night. Can’t wait to hear “Dr Beat / Turn The Beat Around” awesomeness.

  • amadcow2

Based on song order, I predict Jena and Caleb as totally safe. Caleb opening the show with a classic rock reprise at the half way point and Jena closing the show seems to point to safety all around for those two.

  • Marko

I hope for Josh Turner/ John Mayer / Sara Bareilles “Gravity” mashup.

  • gclay

I’m assuming a MASSIVE moment for Jena tonight

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Death of the Author Preston doing his usual transformation on “Turn the Beat Around” would be so meta that Muppets’ heads would explode. Kermit the Frog is a goner!

Srsly, Latin night, dance night, disco night, and all artist-based variants thereof are reliably train wrecks. Part of what made S6 so dire was that it had both Latin night and BeeGees night.

TPTB could be really perverse and have themes for Top 6, 5, and 4 be mentored by each judge, so we’d get Latin night with JLo, standards with HCJr, and country with KU. (The second theme each night would have to be something completely other.)

  • Marko

CJ and Sam in the bottom 2, probably. CJ being eliminated, hopefully.

  • Roimeister

    I’m ready… I’m SO ready… this is THE PONY I want for Christmas…

if Jena can deliver half the oomph of Merry Clayton or Lisa Fisher, you might be jumping also ;)

  • Roimeister

her Gimme Shelter IS THE PONY I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS!

  • Marko

Lol. I got socks for Christmas.

  • Aaron Krandel

  • maymirabella

Last night, I was thinking how some on Idol, particularly Sam could learn a lot from watching the connection most of the Voice contestants have with the audience and with the song they are singing.

  • macfae

I do not like G&L for Jess, at all. have to wonder what the other choices were that she picked it.
    - a slowed down murderous, dead-eyed version is all that could save it for me.

  • maymirabella

Jess did not start out on this show as a country singer but it seems she has ended up doing some country songs so I am confused by that unless she wants to be pop/country crossover artist perhaps?

  • maymirabella

That pretty much describes WGWG contestants on Idol..not the other singing shows so much, but Idol guys for sure. But a woman contestant would not get away with that, for sure.

  • Roimeister

    that’s not Creep… it’s I Love Rock and Roll

  • colette

Totally agree, Maymirabella. You can teach showmanship — up to a point. But it’s gotta be innate also. Idol’s always been best when there are at least a few contestants who not only can sing well, but also really command the stage.

  • Roimeister

LMAO I’m tired of all the fkin socks!

  • Aaron Krandel

    fixed!

  • maymirabella

Yes NC and AL have done very well producing Idol or Idol top two or three finalists as well.

  • maymirabella

Yes this year, no real shock boots yet as usually the person booted has visited the bottom 3 previous weeks. Even the week Sam was saved, he had visited the bottom 3 twice before I believe..it was his third time. CJ has now been in bottom 3 ..twice I think or three times? I do think he is way overdue and if he is in bottom 2 this week, I bet his time is over. I do think in the next two weeks, Sam and CJ will be history..one going this week and one the next…then the top 5…will be interesting to see wjho goes first…Dexter or Jena. As I do believe top 3 is set …I would be totally shocked if Jessica, Caleb, Alex are not the Last three standing because so far, none has hit bottom group

  • maymirabella

I could end up being very wrong but I would be shocked if Jessica is not top 3..I do think top three this year is almost set in stone as Caleb, Alex, Jessica. None has been in the bottom even a week where they might have struggled…never made bottom three.

  • maymirabella

Me too and this is the first season this happened to me since the beginning of this show, where I start thinking about what song Savion or Malcolm would choose or how some of the girls in the semifinals would have done had the judges let them sing instead of making them sit it out, sweat it out, backstage only to never get the chance to sing but making the top 30.

  • maymirabella

So true, silly filler time where Harry can run away into the audience and toss people around, instead of carrying a girl on his shoulder this week, he may run into audience and start tossing grandmothers around or use Ryan as a volleyball or something to fill time.

  • maymirabella

One thing we do know, what crazy antic will Harry do this week to fill the time? Jump oft the balcony ? Pick up a grandmother this week and cart her around? Give Keith a wedgie?

  • jan

If she performs this on the show – with the same skill as the recording – I’ll be sold. I will finally have a pony in this contest.

  • BrightLights

These are some VERY smart choices. I would like to applaud whomever picked Kings of Leon for Caleb. That is exactly what I feel he needs to be singing- CURRENT rock to prove he’s relevant on the radio now.

  • BrightLights

Wow. I had chills around 3:40. Please, Jena, bring it THIS WAY tonight. It’ll be the best performance of the season.

  • BrightLights

    Oh, hot damn, Gimme Shelter.

  • Tom22

It looks like this could be another divisive week re CJ …. I listened to that itunes link and it confirmed my impression after listening to the John Mayer original . 1) I love the song and wasn’t really familiar with it. 2) I think the song can be sung a way that I personally enjoy a lot more than Mayers voice (not quality but a choice between strawberry and raspberry jam) … 3) CJ could do a job with the song I really like…. but, can he be in pitch live? AND.. unfortunately, the mix on itunes didn’t have CJ’s volume high enough relative to the accompaniment for my taste.. by a full notch…but the accompaniment was beautiful as was CJ’s interpretation.

Others will find it a “dirge” while I hear a hypnotically slow molasses of a groove that just feeds a soul in its steady power in the super job on the drum beat and the tone of the touch on the bass …. and how CJ ‘s soulful lead leaves room for the guitar to have something to work from etc.. Maybe my equalizer settings on my phone and car will help my vocal volume issues.

Who knows how many voters there are out there that appreciate that sort of thing but I suspect those people who appreciate CJ’s style already could really like this performance and vote according to that taste. It all depends on how close the numbers are between the other few closer to the bottom than the top and whether one or two of them fumbles and some apathy sets in from those voting for them.

  • WiltedYouth

This will be Jena’s night to SLAY. I can already picture Michael Slezak’s hand going up in the air when he watches it. It’s too bad he won’t be recapping this week, but apparently Annie Barrett will be filling in for him, so she’ll give her the kudos in his place.

  • Matthew Kitson

Can’t wait until harry gets on jess for singing about shotguns and gunpowder, heh

  • jcabby

LOL! He’ll find something to criticize.

  • Matthew Kitson

Blue eyed lie was pretty fierce. She should he fine

  • Matthew Kitson

I wish, would have actually been interesting

  • Roimeister

seriously, I get hyped every time I come back here and read that this song is being performed…

it’s a strange song… in that it may be a trap for Caleb… the “backup chick” isn’t exactly the backup… the backup chick IS the song… the frontman is the backup…

    Merry Fkin A Clayton’s “raaaaaaaaaaaape… MURderrrrrrrrr-rrr-rrr… it’s just a shot away… it’s just a SHOT awayyyy-yayyy-yea-yea” might be the most impassioned plea in the history of music…

ok… I need to go smoke another cig…

  • Sassycatz

Idol is tweeting that Demi Lovato is a surprise visitor … whatever that means.

  • http://elizabethrosalyn.com/ Elizabeth Rosalyn

Wow. That gave me the first chills of the season so far. Really hoping she slays this live – could be a moment in the making.

  • Rúben Guzman

    Jessica won the night ..

  • Guest

Is Annie Barrett with TVLine now? O:

  • Tom22

Hot damn that drummer is super on all the tracks …. some of the singers understood and used it others less so. (and … boy was ricky tightly so graceful and the guitar taking the cues from what the singers gave him to work with wonderfully.)… but the drummer .. wow ! As for the contestants.. I won’t name them all but there were couple that I preferred over the original artist … maybe ill name them after I’ve heard them all to be fair.

  • Matthew Kitson

Knd of seems like no matter the song choices are, they’re always going to be considered “boring”.

  • Nostradamos

But he won’t say Jack shit about Alex doing the same damned thing week after week…and appears to be doing it again this week….stand behind a mic stand with his little geetar and move his leg like he has to piss….while his face looks like he just sharted….AGAIN….

  • WiltedYouth

No, she’s just doing guest recaps for Idol this week. She doesn’t have a major employer yet, though her Dancing with the Stars recaps are now on Billboard and the Hollywood Reporter.

  • mtthew

Holy crap Jess’s Gunpoweder & Lead… I really loved the flipped intro… I was hoping that would carry through the rest of the song.

  • WiltedYouth

It’s a great interpretation, especially the piano opening. Really sets an eerie tone that suits the song.

  • julesmn

I was just thinking the same thing.

  • Tom22

hahaha.. I’m at a loss to understand what “they” (as if there is one opinion ; ) ) would find exciting …. I’m finding the song choices interesting each week.. I’d have liked the singers to “own” the stage a lot more… and part of that is a myriad of production issues , and maybe if they had different mentoring instead of just saying “own it” but demonstrating… however.. bucks got to stop with the contestants too. Its not the songs to me.. and I’ve listened to almost all the songs start to finish this year where a whitney song usually has me fast forwarding at some point… tired of a second tier version (certainly with some exceptions.. j Sanchez kept me glued every time)

  • lkingcorn

Is that a typo? Or have I just not heard the word in anything other than part of ones anatomy. Lols. I’m afraid this is one of those things that sticks with a person.

  • MichaelG

    hello my friend. :)

  • jcabby

That intro was awesome! I think she’ll do great tonight.

  • Ronnie D

Hmm the only song I know is Creep. Going to be an interesting night by the looks of it.

  • Sue tiedemann

I listened to Caleb’s clip and I didn’t really love it! I guess I’m just used to his singing the old time rock songs.

  • zubin

The instrumental touches really respond to the story she’s telling, and the slowed down beat contributes a developing sense of dread. It was also smart to go quiet again towards the end of the song before the final showdown. There’s a real cinematic quality to the arrangement, like you’re waiting with her before she shoots him dead in the final moments of the song.

  • Chance Earley

I wish it would tell who picked what for whom

  • Swind

I LOVE Alex’s voice, but yea, I’m growing tired of his shtick.

  • Vetle

That reference! Nice one. ;D I want a pony too.

  • Kathleen Moore

For those who didn’t know, Slezak is flying to England for a wedding this weekend. Wonder if this will affect “Reality Check.”

  • Tom22

ha, I like that song quite a bit when sung well but it is one heck of a hard song to sing. The only one I thought killed it was on season 2 of The Sing Off … for me, it’s sort of an ode to something sweet and deer, then hitting bottom and eventually looking up … being a bit too hard on oneself verbally yet knowing one can do more … and, I sort of take it as a vow to do more..whether or not the lyrics exactly say that the lift of the melody as it builds does that for me.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tENBT-GbwIk

  • Vetle

I agree, it really sounds like a show-opener to a concert, which isn’t necessarily that bad if she wants to rock it out. :)

  • Damien Roberts

I think they’ll reveal that during the show.

  • H.A.

Another boring song choice selections. Maybe the Idols will surprise me and it will be an interesting night.

  • Anna106

I don’t have a favorite this year, but Jessica’s voice is the most recognizable to me. And that’s a good thing for a singer to have…a voice that stands out from others.

  • Larc

I couldn’t imagine this theme going against anybody. Each contestant has to have at least one good friend in the group who would suggest whatever song he/she wanted to sing. Then when the 6 were submitted, it was just a matter of picking that one. The theme probably may as well have been “Contestant’s Choice.” :)

  • zubin

It’s also different enough from Miranda Lambert’s version that, despite the constraints, it isn’t karaoke and puts her own stamp on it. Lambert’s persona treads the line between strong and girly, and her rendition has a sense of fun to it. It’s angry, but not so angry that a mass crowd can’t sing along despite the story. Jess’s version has both more vulnerability and more anger. She is not f-ing around. It’s country with a metal sensibility.

  • onlooker

I listened to the studio versions of the songs which the contestants will perform tonight. They all sound good. However, I found myself nodding off during Alex’s performance. Sam sounded good but I was not motivated to listen to all of the song. Jessica decided to lose much of what one poster sometime ago refers to as a “goaty rasp”. Her “goatiness” gets on my last nerve. Will she connect with me tonight? We know she can sing but she sings to herself. I would hate to go to one of her concerts. Dexter is engaging, if you like country. CJ will “connect” tonight. Will he be in tune? Probably not. My mind wandered throughout Jena Irene’s performance.
What I am hoping for tonight are performances which will engage me. There have not been many performances to date which have seriously captured my attention. Caleb brings it every week, the others not so much.

  • supersonic

“Gunpowder and Lead”? I don’t know if I want to hear Jessica ruin one of my favorite songs.

Someone always tries to have a “moment” with “Creep”. Since people are desperate for “moments” this season, I guess Jena’s performance will be declared as one.

Alex will always be the same — snoozy and vanilla. I’m already falling asleep.

It fits that Caleb is doing Kings of Leon. I don’t like either one of them so it fits. And if that order of the songs is correct, I’m shocked they’re throwing Caleb out there first.

  • Valarie

The whole point of changing a song is to reinvent it in a way that will be as good or better than the original. Just ‘different’ isn’t good enough. I’m not sure Alex got that memo.

  • Guest

There’s a parking space waiting for her I guess.

    Ryan Seacrest ?@RyanSeacrest
I got u a drive on pass @ddlovato, send me a pic of where u are when u get here.

  • ladymctech

And I was thinking Drift Away by Dobie Gray, LOL. A little confusion over this song. I listened to a little of Sam’s recording, but didn’t care for what I heard.

  • Matthew Kitson

Overall, should be a good night. Really good song choices
