The American Idol 12 Top 40 taping began at 6 pm PST at the Beatles Cirque du Soleil theater at the Mirage in  Las Vegas. This is the official spoiler post, which I will update with details as I (or YOU) get them.

ETA:  Somebody named Molly @MollyyyxD is tweeting from the theater:

  • Angela miller was AMAZING
  • Isabelle did really good but was critized WILL LET U GUYS KNOW WHO MADE IT ONCE ITS OVER
  • Apparently, Amber Holcomb had the pimp spot.
  • Somebody sang an Aretha Franklin song.
  • Somebody sang “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga

These are the first set of 10 girls who were scheduled to perform tonight. I’ll ammend if the line up changes.

    Well you have to admit 1 thing for good or bad,  has there EVER been this much angst and excitement at this stage of competition?  If Shubha (who I like) couldn’t get to top 10 girls how was she going to get into top 5 girls where it “appears” that Angie, Kree, Candice, and Janelle have reserved 4 of the spots!  Food for thought!

    I DO NOT like this idol format, it should be Darwin’s survival of the fittest.  I fear with all the strong girls we are going to get the inevitable mediocre boy taking the place of a more deserved girl just because of Nigel’s evil format. Luck of the draw about which group you are up against is going to play in some contestants’ favour.  Let the chips fall where they will, why does it have to be equal numbers of both???? To quote Suess

    I really liked Melinda Ademi’s performance last week (Price Tag), so I’ll be interested to see how she does during these rounds. Good to know she hasn’t gone home yet.

    I can’t really criticize the judges picks without seeing the performances, so we shall see.  I didn’t really like the little I saw of Shubha in the solo Hollywood round, where I thought she made a bad song choice, so we will see if it’s the same here.  Angela and Kree going through were the only two givens here short of them completely choking on stage.  Angela doing another original was probably a smart choice, though I wonder how she’s going to deal when forced into theme weeks with little wiggle room, since it’s obvious she’s headed for Top 10.  I hazard to think she will have a harder time shining when not able to perform her own songs.

    I didn’t listen to Angela’s YouTubes initially, but I finally did over the weekend, because it seems that she is going to go far so I wanted to see more of what she’s about. After watching some of those, I think she’ll be fine with the theme weeks, as long as she picks the right songs. Hopefully she has an extensive enough knowledge/catalog of music to do that. She should do “Skyscraper” or “Titanium” on one of the “open” theme weeks because those were two of her best, IMO.

    But, honestly, if Kree makes the voting rounds, I could probably see myself voting/rooting for her above the other girls. Her voice & style are more my preference. But, is she the one who looks like the crazy girl from The Bachelor? I’ll have to get past that first. Ha. :)

    da fuq? they got rid of Shubha Vedula? and obviously their song choices didn’t matter since the top 10 girls have been pre-chosen by producers weeks ago.

    I understand your point, but because she writes her own songs, she may be able to make interesting changes to theme songs. IMO that is why some of our latest winners (David, Kris, P2) stood out.

    I’m actually happy that Shubha didn’t make it to the Top 20. It means she can come back next year or two years later. She’s still 16 and from her song choices I think she still has some work to do. I liked her a lot, but she needs some training and that way she may become a dark horse and a real contender!

    I think Idol contestants can try for another season unless they are cut by public voting.  Anybody cut from the Top 40 could try for another season, but not those who get cut from the Top 20 in S12.  Aubrey Cleland and Cortez Shaw were in the Top 42 for S11 as well as the Top 40 this year.

    First 10 boys and girls this week and next week. Only five girls and boys each week go through. So we’ll have 10 boys and girls for America to decide who will be in Top 10.
