Today’s American Idol 12 Hollywood Week spoilers come from a variety of sources, including twitter.

First things first: Remember when I told you that the Top 40 boys and girls would be heading to Las Vegas today? Well SCRATCH THAT.  For whatever reason (I suspect it had something to do with the judges’ schedules)  there were no rounds on Sunday.  The Top 43 girls were scheduled to perform in the solo with band rounds, just like the guys, but it was pushed back to TODAY.

ETA: THE GIRLS REHEARSED WITH THE BAND YESTERDAY. THERE WERE NO JUDGES ROUNDS ON SUNDAY.

By the end of the day, Monday (Dec 17) the Top 43 girls will be whittled down.  A Top 20 girls and Top 20 boys will be announced.  However, the delayed schedule means THE LAS VEGAS ROUND WILL BE PUSHED INTO JANUARY.   No word on dates yet.

BUT THERE IS MORE.

American Idol 12 Hollywood Rounds – New Details!
American Idol 12 Hollywood Week Spoilers – Manufactured Groups and More!
American Idol 12 Spoilers – The Hollywood Rounds Begin Today!

The Vegas Rounds will result in a TOP 20.  Ten girls and Ten guys.  There will be a middle round BUT the episode will be taped a few days before it airs. THE JUDGES WILL DECIDE WHO ADVANCES TO A TOP 10..  There will be no viewer voter until there is a Top 10.  Right. No Top 12 or 13. A Top 10. AND NO VIEWER VOTING UNTIL THE FINALS.

Of course, Nigel Lythgoe reserves the right to change his mind before season begins (OR EVEN DURING THE SEASON), so you never know.

But, The Las Vegas round has definitely been pushed into the new year.  As soon as I know more, I’ll let you all know.

Here are the boys who survived the last Hollywood solo round. The number will be cut down further to 20 (as will the girls) for the upcoming Las Vegas round in January.

  • 6 white guys left in the competition
  • Only 2 youngsters remain
  • There were actually 240 girls, not 230 as previously reported.
  •  Schylar Dixon was cut

  • http://twitter.com/noanaaman Noa Na’aman

poor Schylar… can’t believe this happened AGAIN. i wonder if this is the last time she auditions. maybe she should just go on The Voice or something.

  • LeahKittyS

Man, I feel bad for Schyler. She was the one who wanted in last year, and they sent her brother in over her when he wasn’t even set to audition. Now Idol is going into what the fates (not the FOX executives, not the ratings, not the public, but the stars) are saying is the final season, and they cut her again? Do they just not want a family legacy on this show? I really liked her! WTH?

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

A family legacy?  I do feel bad for Schyler since she is the one that really wanted it last year, but I’m not surprised since I noted she was seemingly on instagram a whole lot for someone that should be all wrapped up in auditions.  That said, I’m not exactly heartbroken.  I never thought either she or Colton were really all that outstanding.  Now if Candice Glover gets cut again, I might be a bit more upset.

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

No viewer voting until top ten? That means the public doesn’t get to choose who goes on the summer tour, which you’d think would be important since it’s the public who is supposed to be excited about the group they voted for and pay for those tickets.

  • julesb2183

    you sure, MJ?? ;)

  • LeahKittyS

I was thinking the same thing. Perhaps it’s a sign that because the budget had to make so many cuts this year, or the ratings have dropped so much, there will be no summer tour in 2013. If the fates are wrong and this isn’t the end of Idol altogether, it will still be the end of Idol as we know it.

  • mjsbigblog

    Yep. I’m sure.

And…there is a ton bad information circulating on some sites. Just sayin. Just because somebody says it’s true, doesn’t mean it’s so.

  • julesb2183

No, I am talking about first hand sources ;)

  • girlygirltoo

I don’t like the idea of the judges being the ones to determine the Top 10. That should be left up to the public, since they are the ones who will be supporting their careers. What was wrong with having the judges choose the semi-finalists and then have the public decide?

  • mjsbigblog

I’m not going to argue with you here. I don’t post info unless I’m reasonably sure it’s true. I guess we’ll find out soon enough who has dug up bad information.

  • http://twitter.com/dam744 Damien Roberts

Surprised Schyler Dixon was cut again, I think the show knew the voting public really wanted to see her make it this year and they’re usually pretty good about sending people through that have those built in fanbases.

  • Anny_nanny

Who has links to the video new contestants?

  • julesb2183

okay. I was just letting you know. We can drop it now :)

Wow. Looks like Idol is getting some major changes. Hmm. I actually love the idea of it being a Top 10 instead of a Top 12/13. Maybe they’ll change how many contestants go on tour then???

I would love the idea of it being like the Top 6 or 7 that only go on tour, that way they get to perform more on the tour…

I’m not liking what I hear.  And I’m not liking any of those returning contestants from last year…

And I was looking forward to Schylar so much!

  • songsungblue

Schyler is like the AI version of a Red Shirt on Star Trek ;)

  • mjsbigblog

Yes…The girls sang on Sunday. IN REHEARSAL. No judges rounds yesterday. I have MULTIPLE CONFIRMATIONS of this fact.

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

Yes and no.  They barely pay the kids anyway for all the work they do on tour, so I don’t see how it costs them a whole lot more to bring a few extra bodies on tour.  Especially when there are usually a few who get sick, have to take a few nights off and etc, though I don’t think that happened this past season.  Even P2 was able to perform every show.  Beyond that they have even been making the kids do back-up singing for each other the last few seasons, which only works if you have enough bodies/voices to do that without overworking the talent they do have. To me they were even dangerously close to overworking a few of last year’s crew.

That said, I’d be a bit surprised if they nix the tour altogether.  It might not make the money it used to, but it still generates revenue.  Especially since they pay the talent peanuts.

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

I don’t even get the whole Las Vegas thing. What in the world does traveling to Vegas to sing add to the show anyway? Singing at a different altitude? What?

  • http://twitter.com/eric_ascher Eric Ascher

    Three things.
    1) Clearly Idol is copying the voice and X Factor by whittling down the contestants to a smaller number before voting starts. Hopefully this is an attempt to weed out any white guys with guitars and get us a new type of winner.
    2) I hope the judges don’t suck this year. Contestants need constructive criticism to get better. Blowing smoke up everyone’s butts won’t make the show interesting and it will allow the contestants to slack off.
    3) If Idol can find a talented person-ideally female-who can sell records, and that person actually wins and doesn’t come in second or third or fourth, the show will be worth watching in full again for me. Last year and probably this year, I only watched clips on youtube because I couldn’t stand watching the judges.

  • Anny_nanny

“1) Clearly Idol is copying the voice and X Factor by whittling down the contestants to a smaller number before voting starts. Hopefully this is an attempt to weed out any white guys with guitars and get us a new type of winner.”

It reminded me of a joke as Coca wanted to take market Pepsi.

Maybe it’s to see how they can handle a big stage and production.  Some get overwhelmed and swallowed up by a big stage.

RE:  Judges picking Top 10.  I’m feeling neutral about it.  After 5 years of WGWG winners, I simply don’t trust the typical AI voter to be able to vote for anything else.  The lack of diversity is slowly killing the show.

Look, we all know the producers heavily manipulate things anyways.  Maybe they decided to just be more open about it this year.  It hasn’t hurt The Voice.

Maybe this means we will get 10 real contenders and less cannon fodder. And let’s be honest, the majority of the the Top 24 has always been cannon fodder throughout the years.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/H3DCZQHD3T6WYVW2XXC6C3ZPMU Tyson

Jules, either say what you know or keep quiet.  No one likes anyone who says “I have a secret and I won’t tell.”

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

Maybe it’s to see how they can handle a big stage and production.  Some get overwhelmed and swallowed up by a big stage.

As I recall, Vegas had them on a smallish looking stage within a lighted area. It looked more intimate than big and splashy. Besides, we’ll find out soon enough who can command a big stage.

Maybe this means we will get 10 real contenders and less cannon fodder.
And let’s be honest, the majority of the the Top 24 have always been
    cannon fodder throughout the years.

Ten contenders that the judges have chosen. Why bother asking us our opinion at all if we’re not choosing “real contenders?” This is sounding more like the “Simon Cowell show.” And why that is so, I don’t know. Whose show has more ratings and more contestants actually doing well? Not his.

  • tripp_ncwy

Considering who goes on the summer tour was a big dramatic story line each season especially for the unlucky person who falls one spot short. It was always a big selling point for Ryan to encourage people to vote for their favs.

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

Yeah, they usually make a big deal of that. What are they going to do now? Introduce the top ten who the judges think are the best to go on the summer tour (and you can thank us now, America)? ;-)

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

I don’t think you will ever have ten real contenders because what does that even mean exactly?  Ten real contenders in terms of talent? Popularity?  I’d argue the Top 10, at least in the more recent seasons I’ve watched, have been relatively uniformly talented to the point that I don’t really see a whole lot of people that I would consider traditional fodder.  In the Top 24, yes of course, but not the Top 10.  There are always going to be people in the Top 10 that are more popular than others, no matter how well any of them perform.  For instance, would you consider someone like Erika Van Pelt fodder, who came in at 10th because she just didn’t have the fan support that some of the others did, despite the fact that she is clearly very talented and was certainly worthy of a spot on tour.  There are always going to be uber talented people that just don’t connect to the viewers for some reason.

  • http://www.facebook.com/robert.dangio.71 Robert D’Angio

I actually like the idea of the judges choosing the finalists. Maybe this is Idol’s way of giving us Semi-finalists who can than audition again because they weren’t voted out by the public. I would like to see more people than 10 make it to the finals though. 12 -14 people seems a little bit more appropriate. However again, this just may be Idol’s way of not having disappointed fans who voted for a singer who gets cut during the finals but doesn’t make the tour. I’m interested to see how it works out.

  • http://www.facebook.com/don.thompson.505960 Don Thompson

It looks like they are returning to the way they did business for season 1 to me. Could be wrong I guess. But if I am not then there is no way they could be copying anybody.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

I was referring to the assumption that there were people in the Top 10 that the label (Jimmy Iovine/Interscope) had no real interest in signing.  There are contestants that make good TV and there are contestants who are marketable.

So maybe I should say, that maybe they will have a Top 10 full of marketable contestants.  Ones that can clearly fit into a variety of clear cut genres and/or niches.  Versus just have a good voice.  Because it takes more than a good voice to succeed in the real world.  For example, Pia Toscano had a very strong voice, but she was stiff and boring as fu****ck.

  • Sara M

I’ve looked up the guys, and the vast majority of them are some type of r&b/pop vocalist. Interesting. Idol has been ignoring that type of male contestant largely for jazz/gospel/rock/country lately.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/IDXVM7NCMXZVHX4M2RFBYOTYDA Robert

I really don’t have a problem with the judges picking the Top 10, people in the past have complained when so & so didn’t get voted into the live shows and that the judges should pick a Top 12/13 so what’s the difference between the judges picking at Top 12/13 or picking a Top 10.

2 or 3 people who very likely wouldn’t have won anyway, not that big of a deal IMO.

  • irockhard

I would not be surprised if Iovine is being given more control behind the scenes than previously.

  • Anny_nanny

I haven’t seen season 1, what was there?

    to No Thanks
Jimmy has signed only two out of a total of 11 of the season, who chose in the Top 25. I have nothing against to view eleven weeks only at Jessica and Phillip, but many ballads me not survive, and the PP would not have been enough health for an hour a full-fledged show.
Jimmy can choose he want, but at this stage I am worried about the opinion of Jimmy least of all.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Well labels don’t hand out record deals like candy.  And I’m sure there are more than 2 contestants each year that have POTENTIAL to be marketable out in the real world.  There is usually about 5 each year that you can see being marketable. The rest are just there for TV entertainment. So maybe this year we’ll get 10.

Part of being on a show like this is the boot camp aspect.  It’s like a microcosm of the music industry.  It weeds out the ones who can’t handle the pressure or are too difficult to work with or just not quite ready for the big time.  It’s like an extended label audition.

  • irockhard

Oh joy so all the guys will be singing Whitney and Celine type ballads every week (Mariah’s out cause she’s a judge now), w00t, not!

  • Anny_nanny

It was because Jimmy can’t solve for one day, I want to see the full show. And now I’m even uncomfortable that I’ll let the geniuses of recording my opinion about the contestants. Perhaps I should just ask them for forgiveness that I’m so stupid.

They can choose style or voices, but I want to see competition in full and I don’t care even if the show win again, country, singers, which I don’t listen to in real life. “Selection of jury” get in The Voice and X-Factor, thank you very much.

  • http://twitter.com/cheeseE1 EH

That’s a relief.  I looked up 3 of them and two were singing gospel in church and one was singing Whitney and sounded like a girl.  I’m sure they’ll ditch the marketable ones, I have faith in them.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LTM3D353Z62EY545UJHEYMD4DU F

its going to take a whole lot of talented people to get me to watch this show this year because i don’t think i can take much of the two female judges.  i just think i’m pretty much done unless someone extra ordinary rears their head.

  • irockhard

I was pissed off when I read this:

Olivia Gaines from Enfield, CT auditioned and made it to Hollywood, she
posted on Facebook Thursday evening that she didn’t make it. She said
she was a little “too rock and roll” for Idol.

    http://idolforums.com/index.php?showtopic=683637&st=660

  • Sara M

They never tell contestants why the were voted off, she is probably just assuming.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/IYMZ43XMLLAE6RVHJS4M6KNC5Y Dennis

Okay so because we have r&b pop guys means there going to be singing Whitney and Celine all the time?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/IYMZ43XMLLAE6RVHJS4M6KNC5Y Dennis

From what I’m hearing Nicki is cutting a lot of the standouts and she’s not going with what the show necessarily wants. It’s nice to finally have a judge not do whatever the producers tell them to and not be a puppet but it seems like she’s not making the best decisions.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

I don’t think Nicki alone has the power to cut.  It has to be a majority vote with the 4 judges.  So if Nicki didn’t like a contestant, obviously at least 2 other judges agreed with her.

  • irockhard

It’s Idol, just wait and see, you really think the guys are gonna start singing from Justin Timberlake or Ne-yo’s songbook?

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

No, it shouldn’t mean just Whitney and Celine songs.  There is a wide variety of pop & r&B that bears no similarity to those two.  I guess it will be up to the producers to provide better song choices.

  • elliegrll

Of course, Nigel Lythgoe reserves the right to change his mind before season begins

I hope that he does, since even when the Hollywood, Vegas and the old multi episode rounds have been entertaining, the show seems to drag or lose steam until the live shows start.   This is one of the reasons why they stopped having the multi episode semi final round.  They should at least find an interesting way to present this, one that lets us get to know and hear all of the contestants.  Maybe that’s the plan, and that the hope is that this type of system will result in a winner who isn’t a white male.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/IYMZ43XMLLAE6RVHJS4M6KNC5Y Dennis

I’ve heard specifically that Nicki is adamantly saying “No” while Mariah and Nigel were fighting for contestants while Nicki is not budging. Nicki seems to be very adamant in what she thinks and I think it’s causing some issues.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/IYMZ43XMLLAE6RVHJS4M6KNC5Y Dennis

No because Idol doesn’t have those type of songs they aren’t cool enough lol, but I think this year we might have more relevant song choices if they clear more songs.

  • elliegrll

This ignores a few facts, the most important one of all is that the producers, not the judges, have the final say.   You’ve also ignored the fact that Randy and Keith Urban are on the panel, so why would any vote come down to just what Nicki wants?

  • irockhard

I’ve seen the cleared songs list for S12. There are plenty of current songs (2000 and later) but until they get rid of the overdone dated themes we won’t get to hear much of them. I’m not holding my breath, I’m expecting mostly 90s diva/crooner ballads from these dudes. If there’s no rock representation among the girls I’m gonna tune out very quickly.

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

But if the rest of the panel says yes to someone and Nicki says no, then she just gets overruled.  Nicki has no authority on her own to boot people.  She’s only the deciding factor if the panel is already split on somebody.

  • fantoo1

Not sure how I feel about the judges choosing the top 10. It could either be a good thing or bad thing. Maybe they will let the viewers vote on 3 wildcards.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/IYMZ43XMLLAE6RVHJS4M6KNC5Y Dennis

The producers make decisions also but the judges still have say on who they cut. They didn’t want Candice to go from last season but the judges certainly cut her. From what I heard, Nicki has gone over all the producers picks for Hollywood Week and Nigel was upset during group rounds. Now I don’t know all the details but it’s sounding like Nicki isn’t on the same page as everyone else and it’s causing problems. I don’t know about the other judges all I’ve heard about is Nicki.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

That may be true but she still doesn’t get the final word on who stays or goes.

And if she’s giving the producers hell, GOOD FOR HER!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/IYMZ43XMLLAE6RVHJS4M6KNC5Y Dennis

Oh trust me I’m all for Nicki giving them hell but I just hope she’s making the best decisions.

  • smn73

Well that’s fun, cause r&b winners have done SO WELL post Idol…NOT!  Ruben who?  Fantasia who? The reason you have so many r&b artists going through is because you have 3 judges that lean towards r&b, not because there is any marketability in them.  I hope I’m just being a Debbie Downer, and that Idol won’t be the crap fest I’m thinking it’s going to be this season.

  • irockhard

Is Randy really R&B, I know he played bass for Journey (which is a rock band) but I don’t know much else his career as a musician only as a producer. Actually only Mariah is R&B, Nicki is hip hop/rap which is not the same thing.

  • standtotheright

    Fantasia who?

She’s one of AI’s biggest success stories. Platinum, gold, and near-gold albums, multiple top 20/top 5 R&B singles, Grammy award winner, and acclaimed Broadway actress. She’s still making appearances at industry events and will get a fourth studio album, when even Daughtry might be on the bubble with the next option.

If that’s not “marketable” I don’t know what is.

  • blackberryharvest

Fantasia has done VERY well in the r&b world.

  • smn73

Daughtry has sold more than double the albums, while pop/rock Kelly has sold more than 4 times and country Carrie has sold more than 5 times.  She has had some success on Broadway in between her personal issues.  But to say she is a marketable and relevant recording artist is a stretch in my opinion.  But that’s my opinion only.

  • Incipit

Dennis, that is one of Idol’s best con jobs – convincing people that the judges have the final say over who is cast. “As If” the producers and the owners of FOX’s best paying show would leave the most important differentiating factor for that show in the hands of three inexperienced (To Idol) judges. And Randy.

No doubt the Producers can do an excellent job of screwing up the casting all by themselves – (Looking at you, Warwick, Season 9) – but I don’t buy that ‘judges slaving over their tough choices’, have never bought it – especially when Cowell got into it with Nigel because he couldn’t have a hamster, Kyle Ensley, that he wanted to use for fodder  - back in Season 7.

”Another piece of drama involved contestant Kyle Ensley when Simon Cowell voiced strong objection over him not being selected for the semifinals. It was later revealed that his non-selection resulted in serious rift between Simon Cowell and the show producer Nigel Lythgoe.[22]

If Cowell couldn’t have the last word – what makes anyone think this panel of Newbies would? (And Randy.)

The judges work for Idol. They don’t call the shots.

  • smn73

I lumped Nicki and Mariah together in the r&b catagory just for the sake of being lazy.  I guess Nicki is considered more hip hop, but she has done a lot of cross over work with other artists.  I’ve always felt Randy typically leans more towards the r&b artists as his preferences when judging. I guess my point was that I can see why there are very little rock/country artists in mix.  I don’t see poor Keith Urban getting much of a swaying vote.

  • irockhard

I won’t argue about Fantasia but her brand of R&B is not very mainstream anymore, she doesn’t crossover onto CHR. The type of R&B that is very popular these days is heavily influenced by EDM. The type of R&B that gets showcased on the show is out of date, and judging by the coronation single Jimmy gave Jessica I’m not convinced AI has the chops to produce the type of R&B artist that can compete with Rihanna, Usher, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, ect.

  • standtotheright

Yes, Daughtry sold more than her in the past but the point remains that if I’m taking bets on who sells more the next go around, I put it on Barrino.

Marketability has nothing to do with mainstream format acceptance; it has to do with reaching the right audience in a target format. She has, and it’s pretty loyal, especially given her personal issues. As long as she’s still getting industry attention and radio play, she is marketable and relevant. And that’s a generally accepted view of what those terms mean.

  • standtotheright

I’m not convinced AI has the chops to produce the type of R&B artist that can compete with Rihanna, Usher, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, ect.

I think it’s again a two-factor issue: Do they clear the songs and allow for arrangements that show contestants who do contemporary rhythmic R&B in the best light, and do the other changes to the judging panel and the format attract and engage audiences who would respond to those performances? I don’t know, but I don’t think it’s impossible. If all those things work together and Iovine has the sense to let writers come in who will help A&R and not hinder it, then anything is possible.

  • irockhard

This is why I wish AI hired another (albeit more current) rock star instead of bringing Randy back to the panel.

  • Incipit

Do they clear the songs and allow for arrangements that show contestants who do contemporary rhythmic R&B in the best light, and do the other changes to the judging panel and the format attract and engage audiences who would respond to those performances?

That’s the gamble, isn’t it, standtotheright? Even ‘If’ Idol PTB actually presents contemporary rhythmic R&B – they still need an audience that will vote for that style of music. I’ll be waiting for evidence that this audience is even watching Idol – let alone voting for artists in those genres.

Of course – this could be a trial balloon – Idol tends to throw a few precursors into a season’s mix before they push the candidates they really want. Sometimes, it even works.

  • idolbeat

If she did not make it, I wonder if they will bring her back as a wildcard. Could be a story line – cut, one last chance, etc. I liked Chris Watson in Season 7 – he’s one I’m hoping makes it through.

  • heike hoffmann

How it looks, there aren´t any ( or only  a few ) rock guys/girls in the competion left this year sadly. I miss already season 11 with his rock-trio (Elise, Phillip, Colton).

  • irockhard

That’s the thing, I’m not seeing a high representation of this genre in viewership. It was so for the 1st 3 seasons but viewership is now thoroughly dominated by country and classic rock. I blame the overdone dated songs and themes for this, people under the age of 40 don’t want to listen to music from the 50s-80s. The viewership started changing as early as S4 (which produced the first country winner) and when Taylor Hicks won S5 warning bells should’ve started sounding for TPTB.

  • elliegrll

For me, Fantasia’s brand of R&B is mainstream R&B, and the fact that she’s been one of the most successful acts on that format is proof of that.    There’s no reason that she has to crossover to pop, in fact doing so would make her music less mainstream R&B.  Would you say that a successful country artist doesn’t produce popular country music just because their songs aren’t played on pop stations, but do top the country charts?

  • renzy24

Is there any WGWG potential winner in the list? I hope none! lol

  • http://twitter.com/Miztig Miz

Everything I’m hearing is just making me less likely to tune in regularly, if at all. It was surprisingly easy for me to ignore Xfactor and the Voice. Having 1,000 channels to choose from helps.

  • justmefornow

Johnny Keyser has probably learned guitar since last year (just a hunch).
If he somehow manages to make it to top 10, there’s your winner, I’m calling it now, lol.

(Btw, the moment I saw P2 in a plaid shirt whip out the guitar at auditions, I called that one too.)

No problem here with departure of Schyler (or however she spells it) because I was underwhelmed by both of the Dixon siblings. Am curious, though … MJ, you have David Leathers Jr. as Top 28 but TIP has him cut in Hollywood (along with Shelby Tweten). Confirm/deny? I liked him …

The difference between P2 and Keyser is that Keyser has this “d-bag” vibe about him much like Emblem3. That won’t go down well with voters.

I totally agree about the d-bag thing. But if he learned anything from last year, especially about how they edited him, we’ll see how good an actor he is at playing nice.
If he can pull that off, he has a great shot.
