A NEW American Idol promo (well, it was new to ME) aired during tonight’s X Factor.

It’s judge-centric, yet makes sure to emphasize the stars the show has produced. PLUS we get glimpses of a few hopefuls!

“…new season that turns unknowns into superstars. Others dream. Idol DELIVERS…”

Hells YES. American Idol 12 begins on January 16. I CANNOT WAIT OMG. So excited.

Does anyone think AI manipulates the show in favor of the demographic that earns them the most?

Sure, that’s what they are trying to do when they cast the show each season, Cherry. The Producers have an idea of what they are looking for – it varies each year – and that’s why the best vocals in the room won’t get someone past the preliminary auditions, if they don’t match that ‘wish list’. The verdict will be the ambiguous “You’re not what we are looking for” – that’s what many rejected auditioners have reported.

The Producers are not infallible at this – the year they decided to try to stack Jason Castro/Brooke White types of singers, the audience voted NO by not voting for them, and some finally by not even viewing anymore, and the numbers went way, way down. This past season, they tried for a “Diva w/a big voice” return – and it didn’t play very well either.

They have 11 years worth of data to know what the changes have been, what their audience currently prefers tuning in to see, and where they will spend the most money – if they care to use it – and if they use it wisely. Of course they try to play to the demographic…with the casting, editing AND the judges comments – when they figure out what it is that season.

It all starts each year with these brief commercials – each one aimed at a facet of what FOX thinks will appeal to the viewers.

    JMO. Of Course.

any idea of who the contestants are that were shown?

I missed this one but squealed like a baby when I saw Mariah on the commercial that ends with them all saying “THIS is…”  I have loved her (and been slightly obsessed with her) since I was ten (I’m 28 now) and I’ve loved Idol since I was 17.  I never would have imagined that I would get to see my favorite singer as a judge on my favorite show!  It’s blowing my mind.  Sorry for being so geeky about it, it’s just so surreal.  It’s like AI has come full-circle for me.  Or something like that.  I CANNOT WAIT!

People weren’t joking in any way when they declared P2 the winner after seeing his audition. I stumbled on that thread recently and there were many who called it from the very beginning and stuck with that prediction throughout the contest. Interesting note: fuzzywuzzy was one of those that called it the second P2′s audition was aired. :)

P2 had it in the bag LONG before he ever sang Home. His coronary song could have been another No Boundaries time bomb and it wouldn’t have mattered. The large majority of voters have chosen their horse in the race by the time the finale rolls around.

A lot were being sarcastic by saying “oh there’s our winner” in the beginning. There were many who actually thought a girl could have a chance.

And it was said that a different person was winning the votes every week, and based on DI, I believe that. Scotty was green and ahead every week, Phillip wasn’t.

“If you thought the first was “Don’t Blink” – this one IS a blink, and
only Kelly, Carrie, Phil and Scotty even get a millisecond – with an
equal couple milliseconds for some auditioners.”

Yep. It turns out that the length of a human blink is way too long, so it’s no wonder that so many people missed the Idol who they showed on this ad. lol

“The average length of a blink is 100-400 milliseconds.”

It’s too early yet, julesb2183, the posters of this blog are good,  but not quite ‘that’ good…although some of the auditioners in this ad may get identified retroactively, if they go deep enough into the process.

Watch for the longer ads, where actual singing in front of the judges is audible, and more than a blink – especially that big football game one with the very expensive half-time ad prices (Heh. My sports knowledge is totally deficient) around the Christmas Holidays…

Auditions are all taped at that point, and they know what they have planned, so FOX tends to pick possible contenders for those – DC was one of them, in his season. These people could be just random shots, and may never be seen again…hard to say.

    IMO. Of Course.

    A lot were being sarcastic…

A lot weren’t. I read the thread back when and saw the same commenters stick to their prediction throughout the season. DI has gotten to the point that it is unpredictable. What we do know is that P2 never hit the bottom three once, not even on weeks where he had weaker performances, vocals or song choices.
