A NEW American Idol promo (well, it was new to ME) aired during tonight’s X Factor.

It’s judge-centric, yet makes sure to emphasize the stars the show has produced. PLUS we get glimpses of a few hopefuls!

“…new season that turns unknowns into superstars. Others dream. Idol DELIVERS…”

Hells YES. American Idol 12 begins on January 16. I CANNOT WAIT OMG. So excited.

these promos make me want it to be January :)

  • Garrett Clayman

I love how Nicki-centric these promos are. She is the most visable of the four judges and she is the main reason i CANNOT wait for Janurary

I just can’t wait to see how Keith, Nicki, and Mariah work as judges, because as soon as that white male guitarist comes in, I’m checking out. I told myself after Jessica lost to Phillip last year I was done, but I don’t deny that the judges’ panel has me kind of interested.

Same here. All I saw was Nicki…Nicki….Nicki.

  • iluvai

me too. The new judges panel is a little weird for me. But I’m glad for the same-o same-o from Randy and Ryan. Ryan Seacrest, you are the best of the best at hosting singing shows among other things!!!!

  • mtlfan2

i’m really looking forward to the new season :))

This is a fast paced promo and I couldn’t catch which Idols were in it.  Yes, I saw lot of Nicki.

  • fantoo1

because as soon as that white male guitarist comes in, I’m checking out.

IMO I think that’s kinda an odd reason-there’s really no guarantee he will win, plus you may just be a fan. I’m convinced Phillip wouldn’t have had it in the bag if it weren’t for “Home.” He really stepped up his game the last few weeks while Jessica struggled. And I say this as someone who wanted Jessica to win.

It’s only Phillp, Scotty, Carrie, and Kelly.

  • Incipit

It is that, Karian Hart, even shorter ad – with New Judge focus, some wizard editing – and all of 30 seconds long. If you thought the first was “Don’t Blink” – this one IS a blink, and only Kelly, Carrie, Phil and Scotty even get a millisecond – with an equal couple milliseconds for some auditioners.

But the show is casually hammering home the former and recent successes in the middle of the judge focus – - and this time, they stick to the winners. :16 – :18 seconds in “Unknowns into Superstars” – They just can’t let the hyperbole go, never will, likely. They even manage gender parity. Heh.

Nothing subtle about it – “Idol Delivers” – Cracks me up that FOX plays it during XFUS. *snerk*

    American Idol >>>>> X Factor/The Voice.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Thank you Van and Incipit for your response.

Regardless what viewer response is towards Nicki, I hope there is so much talent that people can overlook negative thoughts about the show.

There has been some success coming out of Season 9.  Nothing spectacular, but still Idol alumni getting to do what they love.

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

What was the slogan? “Others Dream, Idol Delivers!” And, they showed it during The X-Factor! LOL! (Who are those others? Is it just The Voice … Simon?)

  • Mateja Praznik

Who are you kidding? He had it in the bag since his audition.

Anyway, Idol will have to try harder. It’s been years since they discovered a star or at least someone that did well past the sophomore album.

  • jpfan2

It has been years since they found a star but Scotty and P2 aren’t doing badly.
Home is the biggest coronation song ever and has the potential to be one of the biggest Idol singles period. Scotty seems like a guy who can sell albums. Both have product for sale so it makes perfect sense that they’d get included. Obviously, they’re the most recent winners also.

The focus on Nicki is …surprising.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I lol’ed that this Idol ad was shown during the X-Factor! It was interesting that Nicki had a few more onscreen microseconds (1/1000 of a milisecond ;)  ) than the other judges. I had to freeze the video to actually identify the past idols who they showed, and I was a little surprised that the same 4 were shown twice (I thought that they would show others too). In the end though, despite the shameless hyperbole, there’s no question that Idol has had far more successful alum than other shows, so I don’t blame them for emphasizing that.

  • jlscott13

After these fall seasons of The Voice and X-Factor, I CAN NOT WAIT for American Idol. The platinum standard, for sure.

  • standtotheright

I assume it’s intentional that I imagined the announcer doing a mic drop as soon as he finished the last tag line. Hee.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“Who are you kidding? He had it in the bag since his audition.”

Yep. I knew that he was going to win pretty much from the moment of his audition. lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

“There has been some success coming out of Season 9.  Nothing spectacular, but still Idol alumni getting to do what they love.”

I was a fan of Crystal’s all along on S9 and think that she’s a very talented singer/songwriter, so for me, that season wasn’t the low point that it seems that it was to so many. Sure, in terms of commercial success, that season was a low point, but I regard some other seasons as less notable talent-wise.

  • fantoo1

I think people were halfway joking when they said he had it in the bag just because he was a WGWG. He isn’t doing half bad now either-his single is 2X platinum. Can the other two shows in the US brag about that? Nope.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

LOL. Yeah, I have no desire to watch the show, but I do really want to see the AI judges in action if that makes sense.

It’s funny, I’ve seen none of The Voice this season, and I started out with an interest in X Factor that very quickly waned… that show went back to being terrible almost immediately. Then I read about the XF vote order and that made me want to watch Idol even less. (The reign of country/rock boys who probably win and girls with big voices who are probably their runner ups will never waver I’m afraid LOL j/k). I think I may be officially over singing shows. But the real test comes in January. Let’s see if I get sucked in again.

I noticed in the vid they don’t stress the word “talent” which is good in my opinion bec. you don’t want to disappoint first time viewers who’ll vote for real talented contestants if the show is not really about the best talent.

Does anyone think AI manipulates the show in favor of the demographic that earns them the most? Would it be nice if they show honest breakdown of votes in real time, and 1 vote allowed per person to be fair.

  • Montavilla

Does anyone think AI manipulates the show in favor of the demographic that earns them the most? Would it be nice if they show honest breakdown of votes in real time, and 1 vote allowed per person to be fair.

Some complain that the show doesn’t do that enough.  In other words, the contestants skew towards an older demographic (a lot of WGWGs, instead of more current urban/hip-hop contestants) rather than the younger viewers who would bring in more ad revenue.

As for the voting, that raises a lot of complaints.  Obviously, if people are allowed unlimited votes, it means that a small number of voters can “power-vote” a finalist to the title, regardless of who the majority of viewers prefer.  And it’s disturbing the show has no transparency — although I do trust that guy with the briefcase who tells us every year that the votes were tabulated and counted.

Imagine if they allowed power-voting in our political elections!

  • Montavilla

I had to freeze the video to actually identify the past idols who they showed, and I was a little surprised that the same 4 were shown twice (I thought that they would show others too).

I did the exact same thing!  The flashes were too quick, but I thought the choices they made were sound.  Kelly and Carrie are far and away the most successful winners.  Scotty and Philip are the most recent — and they are both doing great.  I liked the contrast with their auditions and post-Idol footage.

The Idol brand is doing great, and they should point that out in the ads.  Especially since, with three shows going on, it’s going to just as difficult to find good singers in the shrinking talent pool as it is to attract an audience.

  • Incipit

Does anyone think AI manipulates the show in favor of the demographic that earns them the most?

Sure, that’s what they are trying to do when they cast the show each season, Cherry. The Producers have an idea of what they are looking for – it varies each year – and that’s why the best vocals in the room won’t get someone past the preliminary auditions, if they don’t match that ‘wish list’. The verdict will be the ambiguous “You’re not what we are looking for” – that’s what many rejected auditioners have reported.

The Producers are not infallible at this – the year they decided to try to stack Jason Castro/Brooke White types of singers, the audience voted NO by not voting for them, and some finally by not even viewing anymore, and the numbers went way, way down. This past season, they tried for a “Diva w/a big voice” return – and it didn’t play very well either.

They have 11 years worth of data to know what the changes have been, what their audience currently prefers tuning in to see, and where they will spend the most money – if they care to use it – and if they use it wisely. Of course they try to play to the demographic…with the casting, editing AND the judges comments – when they figure out what it is that season.

It all starts each year with these brief commercials – each one aimed at a facet of what FOX thinks will appeal to the viewers.

    JMO. Of Course.

  • julesb2183

any idea of who the contestants are that were shown?

  • GinaBallerina

I missed this one but squealed like a baby when I saw Mariah on the commercial that ends with them all saying “THIS is…”  I have loved her (and been slightly obsessed with her) since I was ten (I’m 28 now) and I’ve loved Idol since I was 17.  I never would have imagined that I would get to see my favorite singer as a judge on my favorite show!  It’s blowing my mind.  Sorry for being so geeky about it, it’s just so surreal.  It’s like AI has come full-circle for me.  Or something like that.  I CANNOT WAIT!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

People weren’t joking in any way when they declared P2 the winner after seeing his audition. I stumbled on that thread recently and there were many who called it from the very beginning and stuck with that prediction throughout the contest. Interesting note: fuzzywuzzy was one of those that called it the second P2′s audition was aired. :)

P2 had it in the bag LONG before he ever sang Home. His coronary song could have been another No Boundaries time bomb and it wouldn’t have mattered. The large majority of voters have chosen their horse in the race by the time the finale rolls around.

  • fantoo1

A lot were being sarcastic by saying “oh there’s our winner” in the beginning. There were many who actually thought a girl could have a chance.

And it was said that a different person was winning the votes every week, and based on DI, I believe that. Scotty was green and ahead every week, Phillip wasn’t.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“If you thought the first was “Don’t Blink” – this one IS a blink, and
only Kelly, Carrie, Phil and Scotty even get a millisecond – with an
equal couple milliseconds for some auditioners.”

Yep. It turns out that the length of a human blink is way too long, so it’s no wonder that so many people missed the Idol who they showed on this ad. lol

“The average length of a blink is 100-400 milliseconds.”

  • Incipit

any idea of who the contestants are that were shown?

It’s too early yet, julesb2183, the posters of this blog are good,  but not quite ‘that’ good…although some of the auditioners in this ad may get identified retroactively, if they go deep enough into the process.

Watch for the longer ads, where actual singing in front of the judges is audible, and more than a blink – especially that big football game one with the very expensive half-time ad prices (Heh. My sports knowledge is totally deficient) around the Christmas Holidays…

Auditions are all taped at that point, and they know what they have planned, so FOX tends to pick possible contenders for those – DC was one of them, in his season. These people could be just random shots, and may never be seen again…hard to say.

    IMO. Of Course.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

    A lot were being sarcastic…

A lot weren’t. I read the thread back when and saw the same commenters stick to their prediction throughout the season. DI has gotten to the point that it is unpredictable. What we do know is that P2 never hit the bottom three once, not even on weeks where he had weaker performances, vocals or song choices.

Thanks MJ! I LOVE this promo and am so excited for January 16. I heart Idol.
