Adam Lambert and Queen, Maroon 5 to Play iHeartRadio Music Festival

Year 3 of the Clear Channel radio sponsored iHeartRadio Music Festival will feature Adam Lambert and Queen, Maroon 5, Keith Urban and more and will take place on September 20 and 21 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. Ryan Seacrest will host.

This year, in addition to the main stage attractions, on Saturday afternoon there will be the iHeartRadio Music Festival Village, which will feature nearly two dozen acts on two separate stages at the Luxor.

“Last year, the iHeartRadio Music Festival sold out in minutes, trended worldwide on Twitter, dominated the media and ruled the airwaves, and inspired fans from all around the world,” said Ryan. “This year, the iHeartRadio Music Festival becomes a trilogy — remixing, redefining and rewriting music history. I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of this must-see, one-of-a-kind total music experience.”

The iHeartRadio Festival will be broadcast live across Clear Channel radio stations in 150 markets nationwide and will also air as a two-night special on the CW on September 30 and October 1 at 8 p.m.

Tickets for the 2013 iHeartRadio Music Festival will be available beginning on Saturday, July 20, at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET. (click HERE for tickets)

Queen and Adam perform on Friday:

    http://festival.iheart.com/festival.php

  • waitingforthe1

    that’s an impressive line up.
    Should be a great event.
I continue to be impressed with the high profile gigs that Adam seems able to pull in despite what some view as being a flop/failure. I suppose industry perception is more important than idol bubble perception.

  • MargieIdol

I’m curious. Did the iHeart stations play Adam’s singles from Trespassing? This is Clear Channel right? Are they stations that are considered to have a bias against Adam. Sorry but I get all the different stations confused. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Not fit to print

I watched the GMA announcement this morning. Miley blurted it out about Adam early in the show LOL. I think she is excited.

  • Emmy

Ooh, I’m excited! I’d imagine tickets will be impossible to get but I’m looking forward to the livestream! Nice gig Adam!

  • Not fit to print

Yes, but I imagine the prospect of a Queen reunion and the consequent $$$$ coming from a TV show that could play ad infinitum for lots of residuals might have helped them to see the light.

  • Mandy

Yes, I think it is just idol bubble perception, as he does seem to have respect in the industry. Anyone who is hand-picked by legends to front them, can earn $6 million in one year, has a net worth of $5 million, and has the 3rd highest booking fee for idols is not a flop/failure in my eyes.

  • Ronnie D

I’m so ready for some good news. lol. This is great for Adam and Queen. The show will be rockin!

  • ANNIEBA

It’s not always about numbers. Many industry people don’t need statistics to convince themselves about Adam’s talent, artistry and charisma. They can see it for themselves.

  • Ronnie D

Also, the main stage line up is killer. Nice to see Adam in the main stage with other top notch artists. :)

  • MargieIdol

Does anyone know how long the sets for each artist were in prior years? With 9 acts + set up each night they can’t be any longer than 30-45 minutes?

  • Cookiebr7

WOW. JUST WOW. The news just keeps on getting better and better! I’m trying to get tickets.

  • Tinawina

Sounds like one hell of a show!

  • Cookiebr7

    Talk about high profile gigs!

  • seldomused

I would love to attend this concert. Elton John, Muse, Queen + Adam on Friday sounds good to me!
I have never seen Elton John in concert, but from what I have seen on TV, EJ puts on one amazing concert. I have also never seen Queen, and of course that is probably the main draw for me, Queen + Adam …
Then Saturday: Bruno Mars and Maroon 5, also very interested in seeing those groups.

    I can’t wait to go!!

Will it be that hard to get tickets? I hate when I have to “compete” with thousands of others for tickets… :-( Sitting at a PC hitting refresh, hoping to get in. Hate that!

  • mmb

wow so the rumor was true lol. Good line up. great opportunity for Adam…

  • standtotheright

Zedd getting a mainstage slot? Does anyone know a single song other than Clarity (which I like, for the record)?
Still, solid lineup. That should be fun for Lambert and for Queen fans.

  • girlygirl

This is great for Adam, although it would be better for his career if he was performing his own music, not Queen’s. But high profile exposure in front of a huge crowd is never a bad thing.

  • No Thanks
  • girlygirl

The last couple of years this concert has sold out very quickly. The Clear Channel stations do run contests to win tickets, though.

  • No Thanks

Get ready to pay through the nose on re-sale sites.

  • YankeeFan08

This is such exciting news! Fantastic exposure for Adam. Hope I can get tickets. It’s not going to be easy (or cheap).

  • springboard2

Great that Adam still has some good opportunities.

  • Ronnie D

Looking at the line up it’s pretty much a who’s who of current music. This is a great opportunity!

  • waitingforthe1

I don’t see where Adam ever stopped having good/great opportunities.

He’s consistently gotten high profile gigs and they just seem to be getting bigger and better as time goes on.

  • No Thanks

I’m glad this will be televised because there is NO.WAY. I would be able to afford a ticket (or even get one).

I hope Katy and Adam duet on this:

    http://youtu.be/O1jJENKW1nI

  • Tinawina

Well I think it works well since he’s presumably shopping for a new deal. It increases industry perception that he’s an in demand talent who maintains a high profile, which is what he needs to do if he’s going to attract a new label, particularly a major. He has to seem like he plays with the big boys and that he can be easy to monetize with the right strategy.

  • JLE

YAY! So happy….trying for tickets also, easier said than done! Booked a room Saturday, just in case….. Good Luck to everyone trying. :)

  • No Thanks

Also, good opportunity to butter up radio execs for if/when he puts out new music.

  • Q_3

It is close to impossible to get tickets unless you are willing to pay a lot of money — and I mean a lot.

  • Q_3

I can’t believe Miley blurted out “We know Glambert will be there!” :) She is a fan but it was so sweet!!

  • Q_3

Plus worldwide streaming media, plus Clear Channel Radio stations, plus the TV show. Pretty much makes this the biggest exposure Festival in the US — perhaps the world because the TV program is syndicated in other countries.

The trade off is that he gets top billing with Queen. And having seen them together in London, they really showcase Adam and allow him to add his personal style. Hopefully, they will do TSMGO again. I would pay $1,000 just to see that one song live again,

  • Q_3

Yes. This is a huge networking event.

  • Ronnie D

I can already see the wardrobe malfunctions lol

  • Ronnie D

Just seeing Elton John and Queen is worth the price of admission lol. Then to get to see Adam, Muse and all the rest is just the pop infused icing on the cake! :)

  • Chicagolaw

Yay! Excited Adam gets to be a part of this. And what a cool line-up.

  • girlygirl

Do radio execs from around the country come to this festival? I don’t remember hearing that they do, but then again, I haven’t really paid attention to what goes on behind the scenes

  • No Thanks

I Heart Radio is a Clear Channel event. Of course the place will be crawling with radio execs, record execs and all kinds of major players.

  • Q_3

I think Idol “bubble” perception has little meaning — since it is a relatively small group. But even in the “bubble”, there is not one view. Within the Idol bubble there are a lot of Adam fans but there are some people who seem to look for the negative in everything Adam does or accomplishes.

I have never understood why this is so, but it is. But for every action, there is a reaction. That opposition has made Adam fans extremely passionate and loyal, and generates a lot of press/online buzz. So I guess it has an unintended benefits.

And since Adam’s Idol audition was broadcast in 2009, Adam has been someone to talk about, and he has remained interesting and likeable. Plus, he is an astoundingly good performer.

Look what just happened. With that long list of stars, and an embargo on talking about who was going to be in this lineup, Miley (a known Adam fan) blurted out “Glambert”, so he got the first mention of today’s artist list. He’s just hard to not talk about.

  • Q_3

    The biggest in the business.

  • undercooked

Does anyone think Phillip will be announced later? He’s had quite a bit of success with his first album so I could see him on the line up. Also, have other idols performed this in the past? I am assuming Carrie, Kelly and Daughtry probably have? Glad to see Adam performing.

  • Susan

Clear Channel invited Queen. Queen invited Adam. Clear Channel did not choose Adam.

  • Chicagolaw

Just a thought, but I found it interesting that the trio of Ryan, Miley, and Keith Urban were on GMA announcing this. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to find out that Miley and Keith are already on board to be AI judges next season.

  • jujubee22

no he is performing in Rio that weekend…Carrie and Kelly have both performed in the past

  • Susan

Carrie has done every major Country festival but not the pop ones. Kelly has done probably every one both country and pop. Daughtry, I don’t think so but Clay has done Lollapalooza and Wango Tango, the predecessors to iHeart Radio.

  • No Thanks

You don’t know the chain of events. Irregardless, Adam and Queen have been connected for a year now. I doubt Clear Channel was unaware that Adam would most likely join Queen.

Although I’m sure the first and foremost appeal was to land legendary Queen.

  • lkingcorn

Wow Queen and Adam worth the trip. This is a stellar line up.

  • Susan

I doubt they care. Queen could have used Paul Rodgers or Jessie J again and CC wouldn’t blink.

  • No Thanks

Who knows. But what we DO know is that Adam will be in the thick of it and the networking opportunities will be OFF. THE. CHARTS.

  • seashellz51

Well, I was skeptical of that line-up last night but looks like it was legit. Happy to see Queen + Adam on the list. I’m not familiar with the iHeart radio concerts but this looks like a great gig. Im assuming tickets will be out of this world priced. And yes, I also noticed the Ryan, Keith, Miley trio…

  • lovetheusa1776

Just terrific – Miley’s enthusiasm said it all.

  • JLE

I Heart Radio is excited Adam is preforming also!

@adamlambert We’re excited to have you perform at the #iHeartRadio Music Festival! See you in Vegas in September! http://www.iheartradio.com/vegas :)

  • Mateja Praznik

Kelly and Carrie performed in 2011.

  • Winks8

Awesome news. Adam Lambert with Queen in the US, at the high profile, happening, IHeart festival… that really is pretty cool!!

  • lkingcorn

Just noticed no Jlo and Pitbull, Bieber or Swift. This is indeed good news.

  • jujubee22

they add more acts as the summer progresses. not out of the woods yet, lol

  • TXsunshine001

Excited for him a A+ for his management team. I think Brian & Roger really want to see him succeed

  • Mandy

I’m not so sure about that. A friend of mine had gone to see Paul Rodgers + Queen in the US and didn’t mention anything about it being some rare can’t be missed event. In fact, he didn’t have much to say about it at all. Can’t imagine a lot of enthusiasm over Jessie J after the skewering I saw her have on Twitter from the Olympics performance. And having a female front them seems odd. The important thing here is that the legendary Queen could have chosen anyone in the entire world, including Marc Martel, who the Queen fans appear to prefer since he sounds exactly like Freddie. But they chose “flop/failure” Adam. I suspect it because of the great reception and reviews (including media) they got on the last tour and how he was able to change the minds of skeptical Queen fans. Check out some of the London videos on YouTube. I was at one of the shows and Brian and Roger seemed so happy. Even the Queen fans mentioned that they hadn’t seen them so excited performing since Freddie.

  • Esqt
  • Sanmm

Here is hoping for additional shows as well. Wondering if he will be in London as well

  • Mandy

Yeah, can’t believe out of all those big names, she blurts out “Glambert”.

  • windmills

Swift and Pitbull played the festival last year, and JLo played the festival in 2011. I think they’ve been trying not to repeat acts from the last 2 years. However, the Biebs has not played this festival yet as far as I can tell.

  • No Thanks

Exactly. It’s entirely possible Clear Channel saw how well the concerts went in Europe and wanted in on the action.

  • elliegrll

This is a good gig, but like the 80s cover songs album, performing as a part of Queen doesn’t give the image of Adam being a current artist.

  • weareallinnocent

Great line-up, and great news for Adam. Makes me happy!

  • Larc

So Adam should have refused the opportunity because the one-time event doesn’t reflect the ideal image? I doubt there are many current artists who wouldn’t jump at the chance to perform with Queen if they actually had the talent to carry it through.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

So Adam should have refused the opportunity because the one-time event doesn’t reflect the ideal image?

Nope. Nor should he refuse the Glee gig. These are events he appears to enjoy that give him visibility.

However, at some nearish future point, he is going to have to have promo that demonstrates the commitment to new original music that he was so eloquent about in his missive to Ms. Halperin of THR.

For the nonce, I’m going to assume his management is aware of this and has something in the works, and these cover-singing gigs are to keep Lambert visible (and paid) while management moves the pieces into position on the board for the larger “original music” play. I will also be disappointed if I turn out to be wrong.

  • Mandy

I think when it comes to legends, there are no rules, as they have fans of all ages. Remember the EMAs, which has a young audience, awarded them with a world icon award. My brother and his 20 something daughter went to a Rolling Stones show together and loved it. My 30 something co-worker raved about attending a Bruce Springsteen concert. And this particular legendary band has the reputation of having had who many think was the world’s greatest rock vocalist, Freddie Mercury. The Queen Extravaganza and We Will Rock You shows are still playing. Can’t tell you how many times I hear a Queen song on commercials, television, sports events, etc. Their songs are always being covered on shows like Glee, Idol, The Voice, etc.

  • lovetheusa1776

Queen will always be “current” in the larger sense. But this appearance is an enormous help in getting him better known – and, if he impresses people – as he’s likely to do – they may look into his music. A complete win all ’round.

  • babyspock

BTIKM did get added to cc hac premium choice.

  • Mel432

Jessie J performed with Queen, and I doubt it was on anyone’s mind that this would ruin her image as a current artist.

Maybe someone who might hear Adam for the first time might become a fan and attend his own concert. As an example, there was a huge Freddie Mercury fan who travelled from Japan to see the Queen/Adam concerts in London. He then was seen in the front row at several Adam concerts in Japan.

  • ANNIEBA

Well this was predictable. First, the cover album is a no go, second, this isn’t a good gig, it is a great gig with fucking Queen at one of the biggest concerts of the in the US. Not everything an artist does has to be directly quantifiable to being a “current” artist or measured by numbers. This is an honor that will always be on Adam’s resume and something that sets him apart from all the rest. The majority of the so called “current” artists aren’t and never will be the legends that Queen are and Adam is highly respected by them. The value of this association is not something we will probably be a able to measure in the usual Idol bubble way, incomprehensible as that may be for you, but valuable it is.

  • Mandy

    Well said!!!!

  • Larc

I think that will happen as well. In fact, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if Adam has already signed with another label and is waiting for an appropriate time to announce it.

  • No Thanks

Some are speculating that Queen and Adam might do the iTunes Festival in London:

    http://www.itunesfestival.com/

  • H.A.

This is great news and all the acts seems worthwhile. It’s interesting that Queen would come all the way to the U.S. for a radio event and I hear the London gig may be the iTunes festival. The Brian May interview was confusing because in the paragraph where he talks about Adam he mentions discussions about the Freddie Mercury movie. Any thoughts?

Cute that Miley couldn’t contain herself by spilling Adam’s name.

  • Mandy

Yup. Constantine, Marc Martel, and Michael Johns would trade places with Adam in a second. Not to say that they are current artists, but they have all covered Queen in the past.

  • lovetheusa1776

Brian mentioned something interesting – how great it was to be back as just the band and a vocalist like Adam – one who could move on stage and engage the audience. Apparently more like the old times.

  • Chicagolaw

It is one show. It’s not like he is going out on tour with them, lol. He gets to be a part of the biggest radio concert out there. He gets to network and mingle with top CHR artists—several of whom have already expressed excitement in seeing his act.
He has great management. I am sure everything that’s happening right now is ultimately leading to news about his “current” music future.

  • No Thanks

Yeah, Adam is one of the few male singers that can vocally handle the entire range of Freddie’s song catalog.

  • H.A.

Hasn’t Queen collaborated with a lot of today’s younger artists like Gaga, Green Day etc… A lot of the young current artists all love to be on the same stage with the legends and I don’t think they worry about their future in the music business. it’s a one in a lifetime experience.

  • Chicagolaw

I have a feeling that’s coming. I know absolutely nothing, lol, but I have feeling everything is building up to some news.
In the meantime, it is well-known that he is already writing and recording new music.

  • Chicagolaw

That is my guess, as well. Again, I know nothing, but everything has been handled so well thus far, I fully expect to hear label news once this IHR cycle has run its course

  • lovetheusa1776
  • vamp111

Well first he has to find a new label :)

  • No Thanks

Yup. And I guarantee you most of that line up loves and admires Queen and would kill for the opportunity to sing with Queen.

And that fact that Brian and Roger are giving Adam mad props for his singing and performance skills (after having worked with one of the best rock vocalists of ALL. TIME.) will not go unnoticed on all of those “current” artists.

  • vamp111

Without Queen, Adam wouldn’t have been there.

  • lovetheusa1776

First? Think he’s setting his own priorities and lookin’ pretty good.

  • springboard2

Actually, as much as I don’t think the same about everything he does, I thought that he did a pretty good job of making the Queen songs sound current in the previous gigs.

  • shell29

Maybe not, but it’s still great exposure for him and a great opportunity to perform in front of a large audience.

  • Montavilla

Here’s a link to YouTube for people who missed the moment:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZKC-Kn4cSc

  • No Thanks

Performing with rock legends (at a major music festival with major artists) and recording generic 80s tunes are two TOTALLY different things.

  • Winks8

What gives the image of Adam being a curent artist is the fact that they are performing at this hot event, in this venue, with this line-up. I think the diversity of genre, style, etc. is awesome. And, the fact that it will sell out in minutes…. that’s a HOT event. I doubt we’ll see one press mention of old fogeyness associated with this. In fact, I’ve seen just the opposite. One piece commenting about how big a “get” it was to secure Queen. If, in today’s world it’s a “get” to get Queen, that makes them current too. People want to see and hear them. Awesome!!! To me anyway. To each his/her own. :-)

  • Montavilla

Brian May was covering a lot of different projects in that interview. The movie is something that’s been in the works for a long time and continues to be so.

What I gathered from reading fan posts about it is that Sasha Baron Cohen will be playing Freddie. It’s got a great writer and director attached. It’s going to cover a period when Queen were already famous, leading up to their historic appearance at the Live-Aid concert.

It sounds very interesting, but it has nothing to do with Adam.

  • Winks8

This is an excellent point Many. I totally agree.

  • Montavilla

I don’t recall much “old fogey” coverage of the Queen + Adam Lambert concerts last year, either. There might have been one or two references, but it was drowned out by general media flailing.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

I’d actually started wondering if the timing of the Lambert Loves Original Music Manifesto (LLOMM) to THR was partly driven by getting that point out there in the press as counterweight to the Glee and iHeart Radio gigs, both of which his management knew had to be announced by a certain date.

Since all of this news — Glee, Queen in Las Vegas, bye-bye to RCA — had to be announced anyway (and we know from past adventures that the timing of mentioning one’s left a label is the most flexible item on the list), I’m all for arranging the sequence for maximum effect. That’s what management/PR is paid to do.

That’s not at ALL to say anything in the LLOMM was untrue, merely that everything to be said was artistically arranged in especially pleasing patterns. It’s like the ornamental garden of PR. Let us wander, gently humming tracks from Trespassing, and sniff the fragrant flowers.

  • Larc

Will they use Freddie’s actual voice to dub his singing? Cohen might serve as a passable Freddie because of the similarity in looks if he can refrain from being a jerk long enough, but he certainly couldn’t handle the singing.

  • Mandy

Well name another frontman who could handle it vocally and who people would be equally excited about. Someone already mentioned Paul Rodgers and Jessie J but I just don’t think so. And why does it matter so much how he got there? He is there and media seems to be mentioning him and Queen a lot, especially Billboard, who has been excited since last week.

  • jujubee22

Apparently Adam actually has some new music that he has started playing for his friends…I’ve no doubt when its ready to be released and he has his ducks in a row in that regard that his promo will focus on his current music — just like it has every other time he has released new music. But until that time, while between eras? appearances on Glee and at a huge music festival with huge names seem like a good idea to me

  • lovetheusa1776

Sums up the strategy perfectly – lol.

  • lovetheusa1776

    Albiku@Albiku18m
@melirose89 Angie M’s interview. She said Adam’s been helping her a lot with the business side of being a singer. Lawyers, etc. @purplegirll

    Such a good, loyal guy.

(Apparently not so much with JJ )

  • Larc

Among many others, there are definitely 2 things I’ve learned about Adam: (1) He’s not one to let grass grow under his feet and almost always has something in the hopper, and (2) we’re never likely to see everything he has behind the curtain at any given time.

  • lovetheusa1776

He’s mentioned that this time around going to keep things sub rosa.

  • JLE

Here is a view from a long time Queen fan. And no, I wasn’t born when they started. Queen is iconic and loved around the world. I was devastated when Freddie died. My friends thought I was nuts. (high school). I lived overseas for quite a while and fell in love when I was very young.

After Freddie, time passed and then Queen came out with Paul Rodgers. I was not a fan of Paul at ALL. He is fine with his band but he had a very small range and couldn’t even come close to pulling off Queen’s more challenging catalog. They didn’t even try most songs. Marc Martel is just a sound alike, to me, and brings nothing new to the group. Some long time fans will say they want him but as soon as he would sign up they would rip him apart too.”Too much a copy cat.” That is the problem with legends, it is hard to let go of someone that is that great. No one can replace Freddie. Ever.

I watched Idol and liked Adam. But, that was about it. When I heard they were getting an icon award and preforming at the EMA’s I was curious. Expecting to hate whoever was singing. I was VERY surprised to hear Adam. Thought it was okay but he had a lot of vibrato going on so not so sure. Watched it back a few times and just caught something that made me take notice. Confidence? The high notes? Not sure to this day. Anyway, when it was announced that Queen and Adam were dong Sonisphere I thought, well, why not. I have waited my whole life to see and hear Queen music live so let’s go. When it was cancelled I was actually sad. Then they announced Hammersmith, the “home” of Queen. I had to go. I was WAY more excited to see Roger and Brian and still a little upset that Deacon stayed retired. Still iffy on Adam.

Met a bunch of Queen fans at Distillers Arms bar down the street from Hammersmith, all not quite sure what to expect. Seven Seas of Rhye opened the show and by the time it got to Don’t Stop Me Now we were hooked. WHAT? Who is this? He was incredible. I was shocked. I almost didn’t want to like him but I did. In fact I bought scalper tickets for the next 2 shows.

I started looking into Adam as an artist and he has an amazing voice and great stage presence. I like some of his music and actually went to a concert recently. He is better on stage than his recorded music. He just needs the right material and the right promotion at the same time. He is tricky because he is so hard to define as an artist. Is he rock? Is he pop? Is he a ballad singer? Kind of like Freddie, he blurred the lines with music and incorporated it all. That is why Queen’s music is iconic and that is why I feel it is a great honor that Brian and Roger feel like he is good enough to stand with them and sing those songs that are timeless. To diminish what he brings to Queen is silly and I have learned not to judge because people will surprise you if you give them a chance.

  • dy

I’ll be looking for the Rock in Rio stream myself that weekend. But decent lineup for those who listen to iheartradio stations.

  • ANNIEBA

Thank you so much for sharing this and for giving Adam a chance.

  • Gretta

Wasn’t this idea addressed for hours and hours over the past couple of days in other MJ posts? The exact words are different, but the implication that Adam is being hypocritical in his reasoning is exactly the same. Can we move on?

  • Winks8

“Watched it back a few times and just caught something that made me take notice. Confidence? The high notes? Not sure to this day.”
JLE, thank you for sharing your experience. I’ve been on board with Adam from very early on and even those early days of seeing him on Idol and discovering him on youtube….. I can’t really say what it was either. It’s just something pretty special.

  • jujubee22

i doubt Angie will ever hear from JJ again

  • No Thanks

I remember what got me hooked. When his name showed up on spoilers lists and the link to his Zodiac Show performance was shared. I though, if this guy brings just a FRACTION of that crazy to Idol, this is gonna be HELLA fun. And it sure was!

  • turquoisewaters

Congratulations to Adam. Being asked (again) to perform with Queen speaks for itself.

  • girlygirl

In a lot of movies like this, they use the original recordings and the actor just lip syncs

  • Montavilla

I love your post and I love this part most of all:

I have learned not to judge because people will surprise you if you give them a chance.

That applies to a lot of people. Not just Adam.

  • Montavilla

I don’t actually know. Sasha Baron Cohen can sing, so they could go either way depending on the effect they’re looking for.

On the whole, I think they’d be better off with lip-synching to Freddie’s vocals. Unless they want Tom Hooper realness, then Cohen will already be lip-synching, and it will be less jarring for the audience.

  • breakdown

(A known Adam fan) says it all. I have nothing against him. I am just not a fan and this is not his fan site. A blog like this covers many artists and events so there will be varying opinions which is to be expected.

  • Matty Minkus

Iheart is going to be televised on the CW network. Don’t have to rely on a shaky stream or radio. Some kickass acts. Looking forward to JT, Muse, 30STM and Queen the most. Great gig.

  • Mandy

Thank you so much for giving Adam a chance. Your story is similar to a lot of the Queen fans who went in skeptical but came out of the concerts believers. All you have to do watch watch the London YouTubes – the mostly Queen fan audience loved him. Here is the blog of a UK opera singer who loves Adam and attended the three London shows.

    http://soundbath.wordpress.com/2012/09/16/queen-and-adam-lambert-in-london-july-2012/

She has a funny story of a Queen fan waiting in line who was the “most verbally scornful of Adam” but who was brought to tears when he heard him sing. Also, here is a quote from her that nicely sums up Adam:

“I have to say that I never worry for Adam – he is a consummate professional with an entrenched foundation in stage craft, an unshakable vocal technique, superior performance skills, and the biggest, most tangible stage presence I have ever experienced, not to mention the most beautiful voice I have ever heard. He has the ability to win over any audience by mesmerizing them, making them feel safe and by charming them out of real time and into Adam time, which is always over way too soon.”

I’ve noticed that many of the people who do not like Adam have not heard his music and of course have not seen him live. They make nasty comments on his YouTubes but all I can say is that video and TV do not do his voice justice at all. The first time I heard it live during the Idol concerts, I could not believe that his voice was real. It was so powerful, pitch-perfect, and emotional. I immediately booked more Idol concerts around the country just to hear his 20 minute set. Here I am 30+ concerts later and I am just as excited to see him at any concert as I was on the first Idol concert.

  • Lindsayjean139

It’s really interesting how Adam has so many big names in the business calling themselves Glamberts or huge fans. He really has a lot of support from some big names. The Idol bubble is just that a bubble.

  • Lindsayjean139

I came home to such incredibly news! Adam is the gift that keeps on giving :) I was so excited to hear about Glee and now Queen!

  • Axxxel

Thank you very much for sharing…

  • Axxxel

Wow, 30+ concerts !! and I am already proud that I have seen 2 times Adam Lambert in concert LOL !

  • marmom07

Adam is between albums right now. He either has a new record label lined up or he is working on it. What exactly would you suggest he do? Sit home and twiddle his thumbs?

Given that the definition of “Current Artist” seems to be “must have a top 10? or a top 5? hit single on the chart today. You are right, he doesn’t have a single on the charts today and it didn’t work out with his last album. So by that narrow definition he is not a current artist.

However, Instead of sitting home and dropping completely off the radar he’s out working: concerts, charities, TV and who knows what else while he works on new music. As others have pointed out he will be performing at a very hot, hip, current, hard to get tickets for I Heart Radio concert that will be attended by a lot of music industry folks. Yes he’s going to be fronting an iconic band and not singing his music. But he does a great job singing with Queen and it will showcase his vocal and performance abilities. Backstage he will get to network, network, network. He is talented and by all accounts very likable. Those things will go a long way toward furthering his career (people like it when they can do something for someone they like and yes it’s still a business I’m not saying someone is going to give him money for nothing that’s where the talent part comes in). Someone out there is going to see what RCA couldn’t and pick him up.

I don’t recall Adam ever saying he wanted to be a Pop Super Star. He came off of idol and said “I’m looking for more opportunities” and “I want to be a recording artist.” Well looks to me like he is achieving those things. His career path is not the classic Disney Child star path. He’s going to forge his own path and maybe that path includes hit records in the future and maybe it doesn’t. Looking at this concert and Glee in the context of where he’s at right now….he’s doing great.

  • Karen C

Yeah, but would Queen be there without Adam?

  • marmom07

So excited for Adam and those who will get to hear him and Queen at this concert. When I first heard the rumor I was thinking no way would Queen come to the states for this. But since it’s being televised I guess they thought it was a good way to reach fans.

  • Mandy

Believe it or not, I’ve met people at these concerts who have been to way more than I have. I guess it helps being in California, where he does a lot of shows. :) Hope you’ll get to see him more.

  • Axxxel

I like the more modern version of “We will rock you” that Queenbert sang at some of the concerts and just for these 2 songs: ” the show must go on” and ” Who wants to live forever” will showcase his amazing vocals to an ignorant (TV) audience..

  • marmom07

Ticket prices for the iHeartRadio concert at MGM Grand Garden Arena are from $71.25 to $423.00.

  • marmom07

A couple of videos to tide us over until September (LOL I actually just typed Septembert, it’s a new month),

Who Wants to Live Forever…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=NVmo7QUoG2Q

The Show must go on…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=OK40qL0sf00

And I adore how Adam is directing the sound guy at the very beginning of the TSMGO.

  • supersonic

Exactly. He’s still singing covers after refusing to do a covers album and “walking away” from his record label. Makes no dang sense.

  • marmom07

So you won’t be trying to score tickets????

Good more for the rest of us.

  • everything

RCA already told the world he isn’t current with the ’80′s cover. I was expecting to hear an announcement on a new record deal today. But his fans will be happy to see him do this.

  • Karen C

I’m hoping they do a US tour.

  • HermeticallySealed

One offs are NOT the same as an album representing yourself as an artist. It’s a fairly simple concept.

  • Karen C

Congratulations to Adam !! Only he would have a concert with a major rock band and on a top tv show lined up right after leaving a major label :)

  • HKfan

    Lovely post…
He also said in a recent interview that integrity is more important to him than awards and numbers, as proven by his not wanting to do a covers album.

  • marmom07

Since some have said that more performers will be announced as the summer goes by I wonder if there is any chance that Nile Rodgers would be there, talk about an iconic music maker. I know this is a long shot, wild card, and unlikely idea, I Know!! But how cool would it be if Adam got to sing Shady with Nile and Sam Sparro or Trespassing with Pharrell.

  • Karen C

If he’s singing with the original band, the songs aren’t covers, it’s the band with a different vocalist.

  • marmom07

Me too!!! but until then we have to take what we can get.

  • Karen C

I liked that too, and I think much of what they did at the shows, especially those songs and Under Pressure showed how influenced by Queen he really is. They sounded like they could fit in with his own music. It really is a good fit between Adam and Queen.

  • marmom07

Loved hearing your experience!! Thanks! It’s always fun to hear first hand accounts for concerts/events I can’t get to.

  • Susan Reiter

What fabulous news for Adam! The pairing of Adam & Queen was nothing short of amazing and I envy everyone who is going!

  • Karen C

Best part it will be on TV :)

  • supersonic

Who cares about Miley Cyrus being excited about Lambert? Have you seen the way that thing has been acting lately? She’s as big of a joke now as she was before.

  • marmom07

OMG Adam on my TV Again!!! yay!

  • marmom07

I assume this is a paying gig for Adam? Do the artists get any royalties from the broadcast? I’m guessing not?

  • HKfan

    Thanks for a wonderful post.
I too was at 2 of the London Queenbert shows, a year ago this week….still the best concerts I’ve been to.But its so hard trying to put into words to non fans why they were so good. Adams vocals, his stage presence, its true that videos do not do him justice. He just oozes charisma out of every pore. But the music too, Brian was amazing, Roger on the drums, so cool, and singing (his voice is still pretty strong), his son on the drums, the video of Freddie,…it all added to the whole. The love, joy and respect between the guys on stage was palpable, but also the love and respect coming from the audience……you could almost feel the shift from many Queen fans at the point when they started embracing Adam too.

  • girlygirl

I’m not sure if they get paid to perform at this concert. But artists never receive royalties from commercial radio play — only the songwriters do.

  • vikkisusanne

This is a great point and one that some people here obviously missed. Thanks for pointing it out.

  • marmom07

I wasn’t thinking about radio play it’s my understanding the concert will be recorded and televised. Do they get anything when the televised concert is shown on TV?

  • Lindsayjean139

what it does is give the impression that one of the world’s most iconic bands chose Adam Lambert to be their lead singer for this gig which will be televised. Hard to find anything wrong or not “current” about that.

  • Karen C

For an artist early in his career that wants to do original music, being asked to perform at major events with rock legends is an honor. To be asked to do an 80s covers album when you want to original music is an insult.

  • Axxxel

    Thanks and lucky you !!!

  • Cookiebr7

Yes, certainly Queen do not need to come to the US to play at a Clear Channel radio concert. I don’t believe they would have come here without Adam on board, either, as I recall Roger stating in an interview that they would be willing to do more high profile gigs, but they had to have the “right singer.” We know who that means. But really, maybe this is all part of the orchestrated plan by DMG to help position Adam at one of the highest profile gigs in the country. Queen might come here for Adam; he agrees maybe to appear with them a couple of places either here or around the world. Win for both of them. I’m just having fun with this, of course.

  • No Thanks

Good question. I’m sure all of the artists performing there are greasing the palms of Clear Channel so they will be significant radio play in the future. So they might be doing it for free.

  • Mandy

You’re absolutely right. Have they ever toured with anyone besides Paul Rodgers? I mean actual tour, not a couple one-offs. If not, Adam would be the second vocalist to do so. That’s historic!!!! And to think here he was, a reality show contestant, asked to front the actual band that performed the song he auditioned with.

  • waitingforthe1

that’s where kelly heard Carrie singing I Know You Won’t and fell in love with that song and shortly afterwards started covering it in her shows.

  • waitingforthe1

an artist can sing covers in concert and still not have any interest in recording and releasing a cover album. In fact most artists sing at least one cover in concert. It shows an appreciation and respect for other artists’ work. It shows a diversity and talent in being able to branch out beyond your own body of work to make a song fresh and different from the original.

doing that for your audience in concert can help expand your audiences musical tastes as well, introducing them to songs they may be unfamiliar with.

however, recording an entire album of 80s covers, with those songs being chosen for you by the label, isn’t artistic or even interesting which is why Adam said no thanks.

  • waitingforthe1

no surprise there. He’s always taken on the big brother role for less experienced artists. he did it with Allison and even Kris and the others his season.

Adam is obviously very nurturing and generous with his time.

  • weareallinnocent

This sounds right and may be true for some but i seriously doubt Paul McCartney, Elton John, Queen etc, are coming for free.

  • marmom07

I do have to say if I somehow got a ticket to the Friday night show I would have to walk out when Chris Brown was on stage. I used to follow RCA promo on twitter but I had to delete them when they kept doing promo for Chris Brown.

  • milwlovesadam

I would not be surprised at all if Daft Punk with Nile were booked. Get Lucky is doing very well. Also Blurred Lines/Robin Thicke and Pharrell.

  • marmom07

Yea that’s what I was thinking. Sooooo who knows but fun to speculate.

  • Mel432

everything said: “RCA already told the world he isn’t current with the ’80′s cover. I was expecting to hear an announcement on a new record deal today.”

Didn’t many people say it could take months and even years to get signed by another label?

  • girlygirl

    I would doubt it

  • everything

I was simply going by a lot of speculation from the weekend that he already had plans with another label and will be announcing it today. I’m sure fans would have been happy to hear that.

  • Jaejae1

OMGGGG! I may have to see if I can goooo!

  • Sharon S.

At that point, fans didn’t know about the iHeartRadio performance. If he does have plans with another label, it makes sense to wait to announce it until after this media cycle runs its course.

  • Shaunna

Sasha Baron Cohen is a mad talented actor, but can he sing?

  • Nadine_Bitch

I’m in love with ”We will rock you” the fast version, Axxxel. I can’t tell you how many times I repeated that Kiev performance and it still get me til this time :)

  • marmom07

It’s very interesting to me how they are billing this as a “rare” live Queen performance. Which very cleverly highlights both how special a Queen live performance is and implies that Adam doing lead vocals for Queen is also a rare thing and hence not his only job.

  • seldomused

As a fan, I can wait to hear about any plans with another label.
Right now Adam’s plans with Queen are infinitely more exciting (to this fan, anyway) than any label announcement.

    .
On another note, people down-thread were reminiscing about which performance of Adam’s made them a fan.
I think it was this early performance of Adam singing and dancing to “I Make you Crazy” that really caught my eye, it was at an Art 4 Life Benefit 2008:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBlmcak7cuA

  • marmom07

What a great performance that was. Hot!!

  • Harmony Dreven

Wow, 30 Seconds to Mars and Cher Lloyd are the only performers I’d want to see. Pretty lame, mainstream lineup this year.

  • Q_3

And it is true. It will be the 8th time ever and the first real concert in the US (1. Idol 2009 2-7. QAL 2012 8. Las Vegas)

And the ones I got to see were rare treats!!!

  • Q_3

They way his close friends the Cherrys have been teasing the new music on Twitter, it seems like it will be announced soon.

  • Q_3

The main stage artists got paid in 2011 and 2012 plus got expenses. I do not know about the “camp” artists because that is new.

  • Q_3

I am almost certain that they receive nothing for the TV and streaming media portions.

  • Q_3

I was a fan from “Mama” but this video is AMAZING. Also I love CTF Zodiac Club,

  • marmom07

That’s what I was thinking but just thought I would ask.

  • springboard2

We don’t know the financial arrangement between Queen and Adam.
I am assuming that venues hire Queen and Queen pays Adam.
If this is the case, whether Queen gets a fee or not for the festival would not necessarily mean that Adam doesn’t, since Queen would do it for some benefit that may or may not involve Adam.

  • babyspock

According the a DC radio DJ Adam got paid $35,000 for his
DC radio concert. Also according the court documents of the concert promotor of his Iowa radio concert whom filed for bankruptcy, Adam was to be paid $45,000 and Train $87,000. These rates are probably less than half of what they normally get for a show, but artists do not perform for free.

  • Not fit to print

It would be great but I have a funny feeling that Queen will have Adam locked up for this performance. Exclusively theirs. It would be wonderful to see, though.

  • Not fit to print

Thanks for the links. I can’t get enough of the Queenbert videos. My favourite moment was WWTLF on the Kiev livestream – it was the first moment of quiet in the first concert and people were “assessing”. Adam won over any naysayers in the audience in that moment.

  • marmom07

Interesting! I guess Adam then has to pay his band and crew out of that money? Plus travel/shipping expenses for people and equipment. That could certainly be a factor why he doesn’t have back up singers and dancers at every event. Aside from the fact that they need to go and take other jobs when he’s not touring so they may not be available.

  • marmom07

They could. But given how much they like him it seems they would realize how good for Adam it would be if he could perform some of his own work. Not sure why they would want it exclusive but they could. I have no idea… It’s all just speculation. I just like thinking about how things work.

  • Not fit to print

The interesting thing is that their Paul Rodgers tour wasn’t terribly successful beyond a few venues like Philadelphia. Adam would have more US appeal than Rodgers, obviously, but I bet Queen doesn’t want to take any chances. This is a good way to promote the idea of a Q + A tour and whet the American audience’s appetite for it.
Tour pending? That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

  • Not fit to print

I was at the Hammersmith shows as well and they were electric. A live Queen + Glambert audience is super-charged – both fan groups are intense. The GA crowd stood and talked for 90 minutes pre-show and there was a lot of playful banter between both groups, fueled in part by the fact that most Q fans are guys and most A fans are girls. Honestly, it was a riot.
When they hit the stage the Q fans went intensely into Seven Seas of Rhye and sang along for the whole night. We just followed suit. Pretty soon both fan groups were seduced.
I brought my 17-year-old UK cousin and his girlfriend. After the concert I asked them what they thought. They were blown away. The girl: “He had me at the first oufit!”
    Q + A live is a truly off-the-charts concert experiences

  • marmom07

    From BB here: http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/1657429/iheartradio-music-festival-2013-justin-timberlake-katy-perry-lead-lineup

The 2012 iHeartRadio played host to several impromptu duets and collaborations….,

fingers crossed we get an AL surprise duet!

  • Not fit to print

Thanks FLE. An independent and open-minded opinion – it matters.

  • Not fit to print

I love that part, too. People who approach life without judgment have many more surprises to look forward to. Makes for a much more interesting life.
    Thanks for the tip JLE

  • Not fit to print

To be fair JJ is featuring her in a UK concert at some point.

  • Not fit to print

Context is everything. An 80′s cover cd is a flop waiting to happen. A cd that will garner a lot of comments about the original acts doing a better job etc.

A concert of Queen covers is validation by one of the great bands of all time.

  • Not fit to print

Most people don’t even know the name of their favourite performer’s label. Queen has a much bigger publicity profile than RCA will ever have.

  • Not fit to print

He says he’s been working hard on new music with several collaborators and a couple of friends have posted pics of themselves listening to his new music on headphones so he seems to be aware of that himself. Time will tell.

  • supersonic

Which is still a cover because he didn’t originally sing it.

  • supersonic

Well, then maybe he shouldn’t act like doing covers are beneath him.

  • ANNIEBA

The most thrilling moment to me was when I heard 250,000 people chanting Adam’s name in the moment before he started singing. It still makes me smile.

  • Karen C

Not if he’s playing with the original band. When a new singer joins a band and sings the bands older material it is not considered a cover.

  • esther macha

That was my favorite moment too. I bought that concert DVD and have watched it many times. The crowd was amazingly big.

  • esther macha

He has done covers along with his own music at all his concerts.

  • Montavilla

Yes, he can. He was in the film version of Les Miserables playing Thenardier. He also sang the part of Pirelli in Sweeney Todd.

He’s not Freddie Mercury, but then nobody is.

  • lizze mcckey

I thought you were a ‘pwkt’ based on some of the things you have spilled here regarding Adam? I’m kind of suprise you are asking this question to be honest.

  • lovetheusa1776

That may be, but the vibe I got was not a particularly favorable one.

  • Cookiebr7

I believe DMG will control the timing of the announcement and this is all part of their master plan. Jmo

  • Cookiebr7

ITA! That is my line of thinking also. Very possible. I could see a few well placed shows around the US. I don’t know about a big tour as Adam will want to continue with his own projects also. IDK. Interesting to think about.

  • Ronnie D

    I like Chery Lloyd!

  • Harmony Dreven

    :D
