The Voice 9 – Battle Rounds #4 – Take the Polls!

The Voice 9 Battle Rounds are over. Tonight’s hour long episode featured 3 full battles. Three more were given the montage treatment. The weirdest battle was one we didn’t see–Cole Criske vs Nadjah Nicole for a spot on Team Blake. Was it really his idea to give the duo “Hit Me Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears? After re-watching Cole’s Blind Audition, I’m even more perplexed. He has a lovely voice–I’m a little sad we didn’t hear more. The studio version of the Battle is as weird as you’d imagine. Screwed.

Tonight’s Battles yielded zero suspense. First, Adam pits a so-so rocker, Amanda Ayles, against a country singer, Shelby Brown. Although the battle, featuring a classic rock song, “Edge of 17,” seemed designed to favor Amanda, it was pretty clear Shelby would be the winner. Adam fought tooth and nail to nab a country artist for his team. I couldn’t imagine him letter her go so quickly.  Shelby’s talent is raw, but she has a big, beautiful voice.

Jubal and Amanda solely existed on The Voice so Jubal could provide a big TV moment proposing to his partner. When they were paired with golden girl, Amy Vachal, it was pretty obvious who Pharrell would choose. What made it weird–The duo out sang her with a classic rock song, “To Love Somebody,” that was clearly in their wheelhouse. While the talented Amy has an alluring style, she’s the type of indie darling who could prove to be a one-hit wonder.

The last battle was, I suspect, meant to be an even showdown between powerhouse, allowing for a dramatic steal. Only, it wasn’t very dramatic when the battle was left to the end of the show, and Pharrell still had a steal left. Not to mention host Carson Daly promoted the steal all through the episode. Both Emily Ann Roberts and Morgan Frazier are talented singers who could go far with their respective coaches.

The celebrity advisers hardly made an impression. But I’d blame that on choppy editing.
